FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State escaped a late surge by Glenville State to pick up a 40-36 victory over the Pioneers on Saturday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field. Glenville State outgained Fairmont State, 544-435, in total o"ense and racked up 312 yards on the ground in the losing e"ort. After Glenville State turned the ball over on downs, Hibbs found Marc-Sears for a 30-yard touchdown pass to put the Falcons ahead 14-0 at the 2:30 mark of the opening quarter. The Falcons added a quick field goal to open the second quarter and Hibbs found Marc-Sears on the second FSU possession of the quarter from 55 yards out to give the Falcons a commanding 24-0 advantage with 7:21 to go in the opening half. On the ensuing possession, the Pioneers got on the board with a 52-yard run by Lee to make the score 24-6 following a missed extra points. There’s little doubt three games into the 2014 season that the success of Fairmont State’s football team this fall will be predicated on the o"ense’s ability to pass the ball.

Saturday afternoon sophomore quarterback Cooper Hibbs completed 25-of-36 passes for 384 yards and three touchdowns to help lead the Falcons to their first victory of the season, 40-36, over rival Glenville State at Duvall-Rosier Field.

Hibbs was intercepted once and sacked a season-high four times, but his ability to spread the football around the field to eight di"erent receivers with an array of both short and long passes kept the Pioneers’ de-fense o" balance and was a big key to the victory.

Ask any current Fairmont State Univer-sity football player who Tom Brady is and you’ll likely get a correct answer from each and every one of them.

They know Brady is the quarterback of the National Football League’s New England Patriots who has led his team to five Super Bowl appearances and three victories in the big game.

Ask them who his guard/center was in Super Bowl XXXVI in 2001 when the Pa-triots won their first league champion-ship on Adam Vinatieri’s 48-yard field goal on the game’s final play and you’ll likely stump them all.

Well, maybe not now, but when 12-year NFL veteran and two-time Super Bowl champion Mike Compton first arrived on Fairmont State University’s campus as an assistant football coach in January of 2013 not many people realized who he was or what he had accomplished in his life. Compton’s transition from player to coach has been a smooth one and he did it in a fashion which is to be respect-ed. After completing his 12th and final season in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2004 Compton retired from playing and in 2006 took an assistant coaching position at Tazewell High School in Tazewell, Va. After two years there he became the head coach at Pat-rick Henry High School in Emory, Va. un-til 2011 when he entered the collegiate ranks as the o"ensive line coach at NAIA Bluefield (Va.) College. Over the course of the last two-plus years there’s been very few o"ensive plays run by Fairmont State’s football team that didn’t start with the ball in Garon Belser’s hands.
