RUN & HIT PAGE 3 WEEK 4/GAME 1 • SOLON vs. STVM / SEPTEMBER 17 SOLON COMETS
TIME FOR THE COMETS Solon’s debut in the 2020 high school football season will come on Thursday night at St. Vincent‐St. Mary’s Green Street Stadium. The Comets begin compe on in the fourth week of the season this year, due to circumstances related to the pandemic. Thursday’s matchup between the Division I Com‐ets and Division III Figh ng Irish will be the first mee ng between the two schools on the football field. STVM was successful the first week of the season in a game with Maple Heights, lost a close game to Benedic ne in their sec‐ond game, and went to Louisville last week where they defeated the Leop‐ards 35‐7. Solon’s schedule remains open in the fi h week of the season before a regular season finale against Medina on October 2. For the first me in over sixty years, Solon will not play football as a member of a conference. Due to the start of the season being later for Solon than other teams in the Greater Cleveland Conference, the Comets will not play the normal slate of GCC games.
EXPERIENCE ROLLS TO AKRON The Comets will take a wealth of expe‐rience to their first game on Thursday night as ten players return in 2020 who either started or alternated a year ago. Senior Quarterback Pat McQuaide re‐turns for his fourth season behind Cen‐ter a er a career best 2019 season. A year ago, McQuaide threw for 2,257 yards and 24 touchdowns on 171 pass‐es. On the ground he carried the ball 92 mes for 147 yards and two touch‐downs. Lining up in the backfield with McQuaide will be returning starter Khalil Eichelberger. As the team’s Run‐ning Back in 2019, Eichelberger gained 1,098 yards and 11 touchdowns on 188 carries. As a Receiver, he pulled in 26 recep ons for 294 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively for the Com‐ets Markell Green and Jakob Olden‐burg return to anchor the 2020 corps of Linebackers.
Both Sophomores a year ago, they each finished the season in the top five in total tackles on the team. Green racked up 76 tackles on the year, in‐cluding five tackles for loss, and Olden‐burg finished with 56 tackles last sea‐son and three intercep ons. Solon’s Offensive and Defensive Lines are built for success in 2020 with the return of six players who either started or alter‐nated. Ben Weingarten, Najee Story, Jamari Holmes, Hark Sohi, Sco Siegel, and Chase Johnson spent quality minutes on both sides of the ball. In 2019, Weingarten started at Center, Holmes and Story started on the De‐fensive Line, and Sohi started at Offen‐sive Tackle. As starters, Holmes had 29 tackles and Story recovered three fum‐bles while bringing down 72 men. Sco Siegel and Chase Johnson’s experience as alternates at Defensive Tackle and Offensive Tackle respec vely, solidify the dominance that the Comets can have in the trenches in 2020.
SQUAD BREAKDOWN The Comets have 75 players on their 2020 roster. The squad breakdown consists of 21 seniors, 14 juniors, 25 sophomores, and 15 freshman.
PLAYOFF PLAN The COVID‐19 pandemic has caused the OHSAA to modify playoff proce‐dures and scheduling for the 2020 sea‐son. The regular season por on of the 2020 football schedule consists of six games followed by a playoff scenario where all schools that choose to can enter the state tournament. Once schools make a determina on as to whether they will par cipate in the post‐season, the playoff regions will be released. Seeding in those regions will occur with a vote by coaches in the regions and brackets will be finalized by October 1. With the new playoff arrangement, the Comets will qualify for the state tournament for the 24th me in school history.

THE LOSS OF A LEGEND Legendary Solon Schools Superintendent Joe Regano passed away on July 5, 2020. Mr. Regano was named Superintendent in 1987, two years a er joining the District, and propelled the Solon Schools to great‐ness on the state and na onal levels. Mr. Regano provided countless opportuni es for Solon staff and students to succeed and will always be re‐membered for his kindness and listening ear. An avid Solon football fan, Mr. Regano always believed the Comets had a chance no ma er the opponent and rooted for the team with
an unwavering spirit over the last 35 years. This season, each member of the Solon football team will wear a decal on their helmet that says “Joe” in an effort to thank Mr. Re‐gano for all that he has done for everyone in So‐lon. The Solon
football coaches, players, and families all send their most sin‐cere condolences to Joe’s family, specifically his wife Sandy, and their children Jarad and Jody. We thank them for sharing the gi that was Mr. Regano.

NOTABLE IN NON‐CONFERENCE Since 2003, Solon has posted a 38‐14 record against non‐conference opponents. 20 of the 38 wins have come on the home turf at Stewart Field. All of the regular season games in 2020 will count in the non‐conference standings.
LEADING THE TROOPS Elected by their teammates and coaches as captains for the 2020 season, Khalil Eichelberger, Pat McQuaide, and Najee Story look to set the winning example as the season unfolds. Solon’s three team captains have proven themselves as leaders and their efforts have been recognized as they have received the honor to be captains of this football team. These young men have been great examples of excellence on the football field having led the team in mul ple sta s cal categories a year ago. In what will be a shorter season as compared to those in years past, these guys know that leading this team with a sense of urgency is of extreme importance. With every‐thing finally coming together, the hunt for this senior class’s first playoff win is underway.
