Wildcats Storylines ...THE BOYS ARE BACK: The men of the Saint Ignatius defensive line roared on Saturday against Euclid, dominating the second half of play. The Wildcats’ linemen hassled Euclid’s quarterbacks and rendered the run game ineffective in the final 24 minutes. Senior Bradley Andrich guided the way with a phenomenal game, recording 4.5 tackles, 1 sack, 2 tackles for loss, and 2 forced fumbles. Fellow linemen Zachary McMa-han, Aidan Gill, and Aidan Wells combined for 4.5 tackles and hurried the quarterback once.

THE WILD ROVER: Senior Logan Joyce continues to thrive as a fierce, attacking linebacker. The Bay native topped the team with 6.5 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss against Euclid, also contributing to a sack and recovering a Panthers fumble. On the year, Joyce is second on the team in tackles with 15 and first in tackles for loss with 6.5. Junior Tommy Eichenberg leads the way in tackles with 15.5 tackles, adding 4 tackles for loss and a sack at his outside backer spot. Andrew Keirn has also played a key role as a run-stuffing middle linebacker.

THE WARRIOR’S CODE: Against an athletic Euclid defense, Mark Bobinski went to work. As the Panthers pawed at the team’s passes, Bobinski wore down Euclid with his physical style of rushing. Aided by a strong offensive line, Bobinski powerd his way to 143 rushing yards on 32 carries. The senior found the end zone twice, lowering his shoulder and fighting past defenders. On the season, Bobinski has 282 yards and 3 touchdowns. Against the stout Detroit Catholic Central de-fense, also look for Jahadge “Bo” Floyd to make an impact. The junior will spell Bobinski, as Floyd has 124 yards and a touchdown this season.

SUNSHINE HIGHWAY: The efforts of the offensive line in the second half did not go unnoticed. Senior offensive tackle Dar-ian Kinnard punished the Panthers, as did guard Jack Jamie-son, center Jivan Meguerditchian, and guard/tackle Grant Abbott. The offensive line will look to keep it up on Friday.

CAPTAIN SANDS’ KITCHEN: Opposing offenses have experi-enced difficulties in sustaining a passing game, thanks in part to Justin Sands. The Penn-bound senior has two interceptions and two pass break-ups in three games. Sands has played the crucial role of both a ballhawking safety and a run support rover. Sands has excelled in both roles, and will be important in shutting down the Shamrocks’ offense.

SHIPPING UP TO DETROIT: The JV and Freshmen Football Cats will head to Detroit on Saturday to face the Shamrocks. The JV Cats enter at 2-1 after beating Euclid on Monday.

Learning about the Shamrocks ...A NEW ERA: In the offseason, legendary head coach Tom Mach retired as head football coach of Detroit Catholic Central. Mach established a tradition of excellence with the Shamrocks, finishined his career with 370-97 total record and an impressive 10 state championships. Longtime assis-tant Dan Anderson stepped in for Mach, and plans to contin-ue the team’s tradition of hard-nosed football. Anderson will employ the same style of ground-it-out football on offense and stout defense on the other side of the ball. Anderson is 2-1 through his first three games as head coach.

POUND THE ROCK: The hallmark of Detroit Catholic Central is running the football. The Shamrocks will run the ball until defenses falter and waive the white flag. Utilizing old school formations such as the fullhouse and Wing-T, the Shamrocks are devoted to running the ball, and will try to establish a ground game against the Wildcats. Running backs Isaac Darkangelo and Cam Ryan are the stars of the Shamrocks’ offense. Darkangelo has started for three seasons, while Ryan, who Coach Kyle praised this week, scored the winning touchdown against the Wildcats last season. The Wildcats will have to slow the Shamrocks on the ground to win.

MICHIGAN STATE STYLE DEFENSE: The Shamrocks run a defense similar to that run by Michigan State’s Mark Dan-tonio. DCC will operate with a 4-man front, using outside linebackers to patrol the outside and clog the holes. The Shamrocks swarm to the ball and use two-way players such as Darkangelo and Ryan to shut down opposing offenses. With the Spartan-esque schemes, the Shamrocks can be tough to run against.

IN THE ZONE: Beyond stopping the run, the Shamrocks are not too susceptible to the deep ball. DCC primarily utilizes a 4-deep zone coverage scheme, occasionally rolling to Cover 1 with one deep safety. The Shamrocks will allow teams short and intermediate throws, but are dedicated to preventing long, back-breaking pass plays.

SHOTGUN APPROACH: While the Shamrocks do like to “pound the rock,” Anderson’s offense will line up in shot-gun formation, too. And if the Shamrocks line up in the gun, they’re likely throwing the ball. Marco Genrich serves as the starting quarterback and can sling it. Whitmer did contain Genrich, however, limiting him to 10-of-24 passing for 136 yards. Parker Bohland and Nate Anderson will be two of Genrich’s top targets on Friday. The Wildcats will look to du-plicate Whitmer’s approach after the Shamrocks fell to the Toledo rival, 14-7.

RB MARK BOBINSKI ‘18

LB LOGAN JOYCE ‘18Logan Joyce is the personification of a gym rat. The senior stud worked impres-sively hard in the off-season, and the results show it. The senior has notched 15 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks on the year. All of Joyce’s sacks came against Euclid on Friday, as the se-nior hassled the QB all night. Joyce will be key in shuttering the Sham-rocks’ ground game.

BY THE NUMBERS/WILDCAT WATCH

As teams have found out this season, it’s tough to stop Mark Bobinski for an en-tire game. The senior pounded Euclid for 32 rushes for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns, wearing down the op-position. On the year, Bobinski has 282 rush-ing yards and 3 touch-downs. The senior will play an important role in grinding down the Shamrocks’ defense.

EDDIE DWYER’S PREVIEWOHIO CITY - The Wildcats (3-0), ranked second to defending big-

school state champion St. Xavier (3-0) in the first Associated Press Division I State Poll for the 2017 season, will be facing the Detroit Catholic Central Shamrocks (2-1) on the gridiron for just the second time.

Last season, Detroit Catholic Central handed Saint Ignatius its only regular season setback by defeating the ‘Cats, 28-21, in overtime at the Shamrocks’ Father Richard Elmer Stadium in Novi, Michigan. Detroit Catholic Central makes the trip to Ridge Road and Day Drive on Friday for a 7 PM kickoff after entering the week as Michigan’s 10th-ranked team in the highly respected State Super 20 by David Goricki of The Detroit News. David Goricki not only ranks the premier teams in his state, but also the top programs in the four Metro Detroit regions.

Friday’s game will feature two legendary programs that finished their 2016 seasons as big-school State Runners-Up.

Detroit Catholic Central, playing without its starting quarterback, was defeated in its state title game by nationally acclaimed Detroit Cass Tech, 49-20. The Wildcats experienced a tough, 27-20 double-overtime loss to their Jesuit Brothers from St. Xavier in the Division I State Championship Game at Ohio Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University.

Saint Ignatius, the top-ranked team in the seven-county area by cleveland.com, the seventh-ranked program in USA Today’s Super 25 Midwest Region and the 11th-ranked team in USA Today’s Super 25 National Computer Rankings, is coming off a 34-20 victory over previously unbeaten and athletic-rich Euclid. The Wildcats outscored the Panthers, 24-6, in the second half.

Detroit Catholic Central, which like Saint Ignatius has 11 state championships on its gridiron resume, defeated U-D Jesuit, 28-18, last Saturday night. It marked the Shamrocks’ 13th consecutive vic-tory over the Cubs.

Under the direction of new Head Varsity Coach Dan Anderson, who spent 18 seasons as the Shamrocks’ Defensive Coordinator, Detroit Catholic Central’s loss came at Toledo Whitmer, 14-7 in Week 2. Whitmer, which limited the run-first Shamrocks to 84 yards on the ground, is currently 3-0 and ranked sixth in the AP Division I State Poll.

Coach Anderson succeeded legendary Head Coach Tom Mach, who compiled a remarkable record of 370-97 in a 41-year career with the Shamrocks. That record included 10 state championships, 20 regional titles, 12 district championships and numerous league titles. Detroit Catholic Central was also a football state champion in 1938.

Coach Mach retired in February at the age of 69 with the third-best mark in MHSAA career coaching victories. Only Al Fracassa (Brother Rice, Shrine) with 430 and John Herrington at Farmington Hills Harrison (425) have more.

Anderson made it clear this summer that Detroit Catholic Cen-tral’s tradition of being a “come-at-you type of football team” will remain the same. And nothing in the Shamrocks’ first three games disputes that. Like the Wildcats, Detroit Catholic Central is, in Coach Anderson’s words, “a bunch of hard-nosed guys who are going to battle.”

A team that prefers to feature the running game, the Sham-rocks have two talented and tough-as-nails running backs in Isaac Darkangelo and Cam Ryan. Darkangelo and Ryan are also mainstays at their linebacker positions, with Ryan being the man in the middle on defense. Darkangelo is a three-year starter and Ryan scored what turned out to be the winning touchdown in overtime against Saint Ignatius last season.

Nick Carey, a 6-foot-7, 295-pound offensive tackle, leads a line that was hit with some significant graduations and the Shamrocks’ starting quarterback from the past two seasons, Aaron Brown, trans-ferred out of the Detroit Catholic Central program to attend Madison

By Eddie Dwyer Heights Madison, where his dad, Jimmy Brown, is the Athletic Director.

Veteran Saint Ignatius fans will recall the picture-perfect, 75-yard touchdown pass that Brown completed versus the Wildcats last season. A starter as a freshman and a sophomore for the Shamrocks, Brown completed well over 60 percent of his passes during those two seasons before suffering a broken leg in the state semifinals last year.

HOW WILDCATS OUTSTANDING HEAD COACH CHUCK KYLE LOOKS AT THIS WEEK’S MATCHUP WITH THE SHAMROCKS

“It’s nice to have in house there,” said Coach Kyle of Coaches Mach and Anderson. “A guy who has dedicated his life to the program (Coach Mach), he retires, and there is another guy (Coach Anderson), who is dedicating his life to the school. That’s nice to see.

“That’s pretty consistent from what we’re seeing on film,” Coach Kyle continued in reference to the Shamrocks’ run-first approach. “They want to run the football, they want to control the football. But they’ll hit you with some passes and take their shots. So we have to read our keys very effectively. They’ll go run, run, run, and then they’ll hit you with a pass and break your back if your careless.

As he did during the days leading up to last season’s encounter with Detroit Catholic Central, Coach Kyle made reference to the Shamrocks’ Cam Ryan.

“He’s a solid football player,” Coach Kyle said of Ryan. “Last year, he was breaking tackles and he broke one in overtime and put it in. Sure, you want to make a solid tackle on him, but sometimes you need help. How many times are you going to get a guy like that one on one. So we have to swarm and get to the ball.

“They are usually in a four front,” said Coach Kyle in switching to the defenses the Shamrocks employ. “But they’ll adjust depend-ing on what tendencies they see. They are a team that is hard to run against. You really have to be patient with that.

“With their secondary, maybe you can hit a few short passes, but they don’t want to give you the big one. They’ll swarm and try not to give you any yards after the catch.”

Coach Kyle emphasized how much he would love to see his Wildcats run the ball effectively on Friday night with senior tail-back/Captain Mark Bobinski as the lead, and force the Shamrocks’ secondary to help on the run. That would open up Coach Nick Res-tifo’s vaunted passing game that features senior quarterback Kyle Hall, senior wide receivers Michael Drobnick, Sammy Snyder and Max Pike, and junior wide receivers Nigel Drummond II and Luke Cooper, to name a few.

ALL FOUR QUARTERS ARE A MUST Although Coach Kyle said he is happy with his team’s 3-0 start,

he emphasized that his Wildcats can’t play a half of football like they did in the first two quarters versus Euclid last week.

“Turnovers like that just can’t happen,” said the area’s most successful high school football coach of the miscues that provided Euclid with all of the early momentum. “We haven’t played a solid four quarters yet. That’s not going to work. You have to come out of the gate ready to work.”

THE AIR WAVES If you can’t make it out to the game on Friday night, savvy

sophomore Jack O’Rourke and talented junior Zack Strom will bring you the game live over the Saint Ignatius Broadcasting Net-work. Jack can recite chapter and verse on every sport known to mankind.

We will see you at Parma’s Robert M. Boulton Stadium on Friday. Parma made this old-timer and my longtime colleague and dear friend, the late Dick “Zip” Zunt ‘50, very happy when it named the stadium after Bob, a great and kind man who will always have the undying respect of The Plain Dealer High School reporters of the past.

EUCLID RECAP

PARMA - Saint Ignatius’ standout senior offensive guard /Cap-tain Jack Jamieson said all of the conditioning and all of the reps during the summer and into the regular reason came to the fore in the second half Saturday night, when the Wildcats’ offensive and defensive lines took control up front and helped show the way to a 34-20 victory over the gifted Euclid Panthers.

Trailing by four points at halftime, the area’s top-ranked Wild-cats outscored the 11th ranked Panthers, 24-6, in the second half, improved to 3-0 and maintained their top ranking in the Division I, Region 1 Computer Playoff Ratings by computer playoff guru Joe Eitel. The season’s first official OHSAA Computer Playoff Ratings will be released on September 19th.

Saint Ignatius, which is also expected to receive a high Divi-sion I ranking from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters when the first Associated Press State Poll for 2017 is released on Monday evening, will now focus on the Shamrocks from Detroit Catholic Central. The Shamrocks will face the Wildcats on Friday at 7 PM at Byers Field. The game will match two programs that in 2016 finished as big-school runners-up in their respective states.

Detroit Catholic Central, which stands 2-1 after a hard-earned 21-18 victory over Detroit U-D Jesuit on Saturday night, handed the Wildcats their only setback during the regular season last fall, 28-21 in overtime. That week 4 encounter was played on the Shamrocks’ impressive campus in Novi, Michigan. As always, this corner will preview the ‘Cats-DCC matchup early next week.

AS ADVERTISED: That was certainly the case in the first half last night on Ridge Road and Day Drive, as Coach Jeff Rotsky’s Euclid Panthers, who are now 2-1 on the young season, unleashed some of their impressive offensive weapons.

After a dubious start by the Panthers that saw Saint Ignatius’ nose-for-the-ball junior cornerback Jett Elad come up with an in-terception return for a touchdown of 26 yards on the game’s first play from scrimmage, Euclid settled down and started to show the offensive prowess that earned it the No. 1 ranking in this past week’s Top of the Crop poll by The News-Herald. Being a West Side high school in Cleveland, Saint Ignatius is not included in The News-Herald’s coverage area poll.

Sparked by a second- and third-effort run by senior tailback Ronald Lee and the passing combination of senior quarterback Cee Jay Hale to junior wide receiver Dre’Von Lindsay, the Pan-thers drove from their 20-yard line to the Saint Ignatius 25.

Faced with a fourth down-and-4 from the Wildcats’ 19, Hale found Lindsay off a perfect slant route that saw Lindsay catch the ball in stride, made an athletic cut up the middle and outrun the pursuit into the right corner of the end zone. Vincent Jackson’s extra-point kick, which was almost blocked by Wildcats superb senior cornerback Cam Toppin, snuck its way over the crossbar and the score was tied at 7 with 6 minutes and 26 seconds re-maining in the first quarter.

Taking advantage of a Saint Ignatius fumble that was re-covered by junior linebacker Sean Jackson Jr. at the Wildcats’ 22-yard line, Euclid took the lead off a little razzle-dazzle that saw senior slot back Aubrey Shabazz take a pitch out from Hale, fake as though he was running a reverse and then drop back and con-nect with Hale, who swung out of the backfield. Hale caught the ball in stride down the visitor’s sideline and rambled into the right corner of the Day Drive end zone. Vincent Jackson’s PAT was good and the Panthers led, 14-7, with 10:03 left in the first half.

HAD TO SETTLE FOR 3: Saint Ignatius appeared to be driving for the tying points with a first down at the Euclid 14.

The Panthers’ defense responded with exceptional pursuit that resulted in a 6-yard loss on first down and on second down junior defensive back Job Rand came up with an interception return to

the Euclid 37. “We had two really bad turnovers in the first half,” said Wild-

cats Hall of Fame Head Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69. “I think our kids had to grow up a little bit there. That first half was not how we should have played.”

THE COMEBACK BEGINS: After Saint Ignatius senior Matthew Trickett, one of the premier kickers/punters in all of Ohio, con-nected on a 36-yard field goal in the final minute of the first half, the Wildcats, trailing 14-10 at halftime, began to take over the line of scrimmage and play like they are capable of.

“They appeared to be a little gassed in the second half,” said Jamieson of the Panthers. “It’s hard to get tired when you love the guy playing next to you,” Jamieson continued in referencing to the fellowship and respect the linemen have for one another, and the conditioning the O-Line receives from outstanding Assistant Coaches Adam Rini ‘99 and Paul Yappel, and one of the top Direc-tors of Strength and Conditioning in the nation, Anthony Rubino.

The second half definitely belonged to Coach Kyle’s Wildcats, who played with pride and passion over the final two quarters.

With senior tailback/Captain Mark Bobinski, whose heart is bigger than Robert M. Boulton Stadium, running with powerful authority and balance, Saint Ignatius put together a five-play, 75-yard march that was capped by Bobinski’s 10-yard touchdown run and the ensuing extra point by Trickett.

Playing with the same fire the offense brought to the table in the second half, the ‘Cats’ defense began to harass and disrupt the Panthers’ offensive flow.

Sparked by two money receptions by one of the most un-derrated receivers in Northeast Ohio, senior Sammy Snyder, and more tough yards from Bobinski, the gridiron rich Wildcats covered 54 yards in seven plays. The drive, which pushed Saint Ignatius’ lead to 24-14 with 6:21 to go in the third quarter, featured a 17-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Kyle Hall to one of the top pass catchers the area has to offer, senior wide receiver Michael Drobnick, and another high and true extra point by Trickett.

Trickett was the ticket once again, as Matthew ripped a 42-yard field goal through a brisk late night in Parma that started with blue skies and sunshine. The Wildcats then closed out their scoring on a 9-yard TD run by Bobinski (PAT Trickett) that was set up when relentless senior nose tackle Aidan Gill ripped the ball loose and ever-present senior linebacker Logan Joyce fought for the fumble recovery. Bobinski totaled 143 yards on 32 carries and Snyder had six receptions for 73 yards.

Euclid would score off a late touchdown reception by Lindsay, who finished with 7 receptions for 151 yards.

Coach Kyle was pleased with the way Bobinski found the seams in the second half and the adjustments the defense made with their penetration schemes.

Note: Just a reminder that the Wildcats’ Junior Varsity team will look to improve to 2-1 when it travels to Euclid on Monday for a 5:30 PM kickoff versus the Panthers’ Jayvees. We will see you there.

2017 marks the 90th season that football has been played on this location; now known as Byers Field atRobert M. Boulton Stadium. In 1921, the cities of Parma and Parma Heights opened the first high school for their residents on a site just outside the east bleachers. Seven years later, the apple orchard and grass field located behind the new school was converted into the athletic field with the gridiron laid out in a north-south alignment, just as it is today. Recently, renovations have been completed on the facility. In the last decade, a new lighting system was in-stalled; bleacher improvements (including the installa-tion of handrails) were completed along with renova-tions to the lockerrooms, restrooms and concession areas. Other improvements include the installation of a video board at the north end of the stadium - it is one of the largest video boards in use at a high school facil-ity the state. The pressbox, which has been upgraded in the past five seasons with a new working media area and new windows, seats 30 journalists and broadcasters. New field turf was installed for the 2012 season. In the last two seasons, the stadium has also had handi-cap seating added to both sets of grandstands, includ-ing 46 wheelchair and companion seats on the home side of the stadium. The Parma City Schools invested nearly $1.2 million into the facilty during the summer of 2014, including a new parking lot on the south end of the Stadium and the full replacement of the parking lot on the east side of the stadium, under the Press Box.

Shamrocks grind out overtime win over the WildcatsSaint Ignatius and Catholic Central, who both have 11 state

football championships in their storied athletic histories, tested each other’s will for four quarters and overtime Friday night before the Shamrocks from Novi, Michigan prevailed, 28-21, on a 10-yard touchdown run in overtime by tough and talented ju-nior fullback/linebacker Cameron Ryan, an extra-point kick by senior Jacob Nichols, and a victory-sealing and game-ending interception by junior linebacker Matt Young.

Young came up with the biggest of the four interceptions turned in by the Shamrocks’ defense under the Friday Night Lights and full moon of Novi. It came off a fourth-and 8 from the 8-yard line on the Wildcats’ possession in overtime.

Under the National Federation overtime rules used in the state of Michigan, each team is given a possession at the op-ponent’s 10-yard line. Saint Ignatius elected to go on defense first.

Catholic Central, under the direction of its Hall of Fame Coach Tom Mach, improved to 4-0. Coach Mach had guided the Shamrocks’ fortunes for more than four decades.

Saint Ignatius, led by its Hall of Fame Coach Mr. Chuck Kyle ‘69, is now 3-1 heading into next Friday night’s game versus Walsh Jesuit. The kickoff from the Warriors’ Conway Memorial Stadium will be 7 PM. Coach Kyle is in his 34th season as the head of his alma mater’s football program.

In what was a huge turning point for Saint Ignatius on Friday night came after the Wildcats marched 65 yards on 13 plays and took a 21-14 lead on a 3-yard touchdown sweep over the right side by gifted junior tailback Mark Bobinski and the ensu-ing extra-point kick by junior Matthew Trickett, who doubles as a soccer standout for the Wildcats.

Forcing a punt that was shanked out of bounds after Saint Ignatius appeared to get a piece of the ball under heavy pres-sure, the Wildcats thought they were in in business with a seven-point lead and excellent field position.to start the fourth quarter.

Not so said one the officials, who called the ‘Cats’ for rough-ing the punter. After the officials conferred, Catholic Central was awarded a first down at its 44-yard line.

That was a key, we would have had the ball with the lead, Coach Kyle said. But we made too many mistakes with the turnovers. You have to play your game, your way. That’s a good football team (Catholic Central) and it was the type of game in which you have to keep your focus.

So we have to learn from that, Coach Kyle continued. We’re going to be playing more teams of this caliber.

The Shamrocks took full advantage of the new life the pen-alty presented, as under the field generalship of their scrappy and heady sophomore quarterback Austin Brown and the running of Ryan and senior halfback Nicholas Capatina, Coach Mach’s team marched down the field and knotted the score on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Brown to senior tight end Jack Morris and the PAT by Nichols with 6:57 left in the fourth quarter.

Morris, who also made some key plays from his defensive end position, caught the toss from Brown in the left flat and raced elusively down the sideline before diving over the pylon.

In the early going, Capatina, another of the Shamrocks’ two-way headliners, scored the game’s first points on a 13-yard TD run that was complemented by a Nichols PAT.

Saint Ignatius would answer with a 5-yard TD burst by Bobinski, only to watch Catholic Central’s Brown hook up with senior wide receiver Chris Jakubik on a 75-yard touchdown pass off a perfect throw, route, catch and run with 2:22 remain-ing in the first half.
