Wildcats Storylines ...GRIFFIN’S TEAM: A senior will begin the season as the Wildcats’ start-ing quarterback for the fifth straight year. To start 2019, the Wildcats’ starter will be Griffin Hanna. As a junior in 2018, Hanna lost the quarter-back battle to Pat Delahunty. Hanna did complete 14-of-27 passes for 155 yards in his time as the backup. This season, Hanna grabbed the job in camp with his exceptional combination of physical prowess and mental agility. Hanna knows the offense well, as he can roll through progressions quickly and effectively. With both a strong arm and quick legs, Hanna is a weapon at quarterback for the Wildcats.

TWO-HEADED MONSTER: The Wildcats will employ a committee at run-ning back this season. The leaders will be seniors Jack Welcsh and James Crosby. At 6’0, 201, Welcsh will serve as the power back. Crosby is a 5’8 171-pound speedster with quick feet and good hands. Michael McNamara, a starter at linebacker, will be the red zone back. Junior Mike Simcak and sophomore Ryan Waldron will also receive significant carries.

CHOP WOOD, CARRY WATER: A hard-working group of wideouts will catch passes from Griffin Hanna this season. Connor Cmiel leads the bunch after a stellar 2018 season, catching 38 passes for 830 yards and 6 touchdowns. Tight end Sam Daugstrup and wideouts Domenic Fabe and Henry Cook missed significant time to injuries as juniors but return as talented seniors. Seniors Dominic DeVengencie, Erik Daugenti, and Jake Lang will also be major contributors.

A NEW ORDER: The offensive line, which calls itself the Fraternal Order of Offensive Line (FOOLs), will bring back experience in 2019. Nick Schwitzgebel and Tony Georges return as starters, while senior Owen Keane saw significant time last year. Newcomers to watch include Gus Salopek, Ben Kormos, and Ashton Montgomery.

BIG MEN UP FRONT: Anthony Gerace leads the defensive linemen into 2019. Seniors Max Watters and Rico Levert will join him as starters, with junior Bennett Adler playing plenty this season.

LINEBACKER LEGION: Linebacker may be the deepest unit on the team this season. Michael McNamara and Connor Francz each played plenty last season. Add in skilled juniors Aidan Conway, Aidan Hubbard, and Nick Velotta, and you have one of the most talented groups on the squad. The Wildcats may throw different looks at opposing offenses this season.

4TH DOWN ARMY: Rory McConville and Declan Mangan will share time as kickers this year. McConville will handle PATs and short field goals, while Mangan will take care of kickoffs, punts, and lengthy field goals.

STARTING OFF RIGHT: Head Coach Chuck Kyle ‘69 is always ready for the first game of the season. Kyle has a 30-6 record in opening games, winning 20 in a row from 1988-2007. Kyle’s men lost to open 2018, but he has never lost openers in back-to-back years.

CAPTAINS: The four captains for the 2019 season are Griffin Hanna, Jack Welcsh, Nick Schwitzgebel, and Michael McNamara.

The Wildcats’ last venture into Indiana occurred five seasons ago, on August 30, 2014. The Lawrence Central Bears hosted the Wildcats to open the season. Lawrence, Indiana sits near Indianapolis, a long distance from Michigan City (the site of the Wildcats’ 2019 opener), which resides on the southern tip of Lake Michigan. The Wildcats carried plenty of expectations into the 2014 opener. Junior Dennis Grosel ‘16 opened the season as the starting quarterback, with DreMont Jones ‘15 serving as the leader of the de-fensive line and a stellar tight end. The host Bears opened an early lead in the first quarter, on a 26-yard field goal. The Wildcats scored their first points of the season a few minutes later on a 23-yard pass from Grosel to Jack Cook. Less than a minute later, Lawrence Central lofted a 70-yard pass for a bomb TD. After Ian Ryan picked off a Bears’ pass deep in Saint Ignatius territory, Grosel’s Cats took the lead with 48 seconds left in the half on a TD pass to David Shibley. The Wildcats added to the lead with a 14-point third quarter. James Norris ran in an 18-yard touchdown and Grosel connected with Cook for a 45-yard score. The visitors led, 28-13, entering the fourth. The Bears scored with 5:50 left to play, but Grosel ate up the re-maining clock with clutch passes to Jones and Cal Grbac. Grosel finished with 314 pass-ing yards and 3 TDs. Cook topped the team with 6 receptions for 117 yards. Jones added 3 catches for 89 yards and led the defense with 5 tackles and 2 tackles for loss.

Learning about the Ramblers ...DEFENDING CHAMPS: The Loyola Academy Ramblers have enjoyed quite the eight-year run. The Ramblers have punched a ticket to the Illinois Class 8A state title game in six of the past eight seasons, winning in 2015 and 2018.

NFL TO HIGH SCHOOL: Loyola’s head coach John Holecek has enjoyed quite a sports journey. After playing three sports at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois, the University of Illinois offered Holecek a football scholarship. He enjoyed a nice career with the Fighting Illini, including two All-Big Ten seasons. Holecek was drafted by the Buffalo Bills, spend-ing five seasons in Buffalo as a linebacker, starting 51 games and notching 314 tackles and 10 tackles for loss. After his playing ca-reer ended, Holecek applied for the head coaching job at Loyola, receiving recommendations from Marv Levy and Wade Phillips. Holecek got the job and has tallied a 146-30 record and won two state championships since 2006.

NEW MAN AT THE HELM: For the first time since 2015, Loyola will begin the season with a starter at quarterback who has no varsity experience. Junior Perrion McClinton will lead the offense after spending last year on JV. Despite the lack of experience, McClinton is uber-talented. The 6’2, 170-pound signalcaller holds nine college offers and is the No. 10 ranked quarterback prospect in Illinois. Holecek calls him a “tremendous athlete” with a nice arm and great legs to run.

PROTECTING PERRION: The strength of Loyola’s offense will be its offensive line. Senior Christo Kelly, a Holy Cross commit, senior Peter Gianaris, and junior Josh Kreutz will anchor a veteran line.

OFFENSIVE WEAPONS: McClinton will have plenty of weapons to utilize in the pass and run games. Senior Trevor Cabanban will start at running back for the second straight year, with Vaughan Pemberton and Tyler Flores available as athletic options for out-side runs and passes. Aiden Brownlee, Zach Boylen, Owen Boos, and captain Matt Mangan lead the options at wideout and tight end.

YOUNG DEFENSE: Just about everyone from Loyola’s title-win-ning 2018 defense has graduated. The only starter who played significant snaps last year is Luke Desherow, a 6’5, 225-pound defensive end. A captain with several college offers, Desherow is a team captain and major leader.

DEFENSIVE SCHEMING: Loyola typically employs a wide range of looks and formations on defense. Last year, Loyola often played a Cover 0 (man coverage with no safety help). In the opener, the Wildcats will test out different formations to see what blitzes and looks the Ramblers will throw at the Cats.

KICKING DUTIES: Junior Nate Van Zelst will hold the kicking and punting duties after holding down the fort as a sophomore.

LB CONNOR FRANCZ ’20

QB GRIFFIN HANNA ’20Hanna will be making the first varsity start of his career against Loyola. The senior played some as a junior in 2018, but assumes the reins of the offense this year after a great camp. Hanna’s lively arm and quick legs will power the Saint Igna-tius offense this season. His smarts in the pock-et in reading defenses and making progres-sions make him a criti-cal leader for the Cats.

The senior will play a leadership role on defense on Saturday. Francz did not start every game in 2018, but earned plenty of play-ing time. The outside linebacker will be a crit-ical playmaker, charged with shutting down the run and assisting in pass coverage. Francz is a great tackler with a ferocious motor. Look for Francz to be all over the field.

2019 Saint ignatiuS Football game noteS 10

The 106th season of Saint Ignatius football will start in a unique way – playing an Illinois foe in Indiana. The Wildcats have played in Indiana just twice

before and have never played an Illinois team. Then again, the 2019 schedule is not your ordinary slate of games, it’s a grueling 10-game schedule filled with champions and nationally ranked foes.Saint Ignatius will meet Loyola Academy, a fellow

Jesuit school, in Michigan City, Indiana at Ames Field for a season-opening showdown on Saturday at 2 pm Eastern / 1 pm Central (Michigan City is on Central time). The game features two perennial powerhouses –

the Wildcats have won 11 OHSAA Division I State Championships, the Ramblers have captured 3 Illinois state crowns, including titles in 2015 and 2018. Both teams have legendary coaches, too, in Chuck Kyle ‘69 and John Holecek, a former NFL linebacker. Each team returns plenty of talent and unproven,

promising young players. The Wildcats have the edge in experience, but the first matchup between the two schools will likely be a great battle.SAINT IGNATIUS OFFENSE VS. LOYOLA ACADEMY

DEFENSELeading the way for the Wildcats is senior quarter-

back Griffin Hanna. He will be making his first start after serving as the backup last year. Hanna has wowed coaches in camp, showcasing a live arm and quick feet. He’s a smart player who can read defens-es well and rarely makes mistakes.James Crosby and Jack Welcsh will split the car-

ries, with Mike Simcak featuring in, too. Crosby is the team’s speed back, Welcsh is the power back, and Simcak offers a combo of athleticism and strength.Connor Cmiel is the top wideout, but options

abound. Look for senior tight end Sam Daugstrup and senior wideouts Henry Cook and Domenic Fabe to haul in plenty of passes. The offensive line is a strength with Nick Schwit-

zgebel, Tony Georges, and Owen Keane returning from starting roles last season. Promising newcomers Gus Salopek and Ashton Montgomery will look to gel with the unit. Loyola’s defense is largely devoid of veterans.

The Ramblers return just one starter with signifi-cant experience – defensive end and captain Luke Desherow. The 6’5, 225-pound defensive end (5 sacks, 5 tackles for loss in 2018), along with senior lineman and captain Christo Kelly, will anchor the front seven.Other players to watch are senior middle linebacker

Anthony Kozlowski, senior cornerback Kyle Zupec and junior cornerback Artis Benjamin. As a unit, Loyola liked to utilize man coverage on

defense last year, but are not afraid to mix it up. The Wildcats will trot out different formations early in the game to see how the Ramblers react on defense.SAINT IGNATIUS DEFENSE VS. LOYOLA ACAD-

EMY OFFENSEFor the first time in five seasons, the Ramblers

will send out a quarterback to start the season who has no varsity snaps. Junior Perrion McClin-ton will open the year as the starter. At 6’2, 170 pounds, McClinton is young but talented, with nine college offers and a high recruit ranking. McClin-ton has good legs and a strong arm.McClinton’s top returning weapon is senior run-

ning back Trevor Cabanban who rushed for 586 yards and 4 touchdowns last year. Wideouts Aidan Brownlee, Zach Boylen, and Owen Boos form the receiving core. Matt Mangan is a leader at tight end, as the captain tallied 23 receptions for 285 yards and 2 touchdowns in 2018.The strength of the Loyola offense is its big men

up front. The Ramblers return three starters – se-nior Christo Kelly, senior Peter Gianaris, and junior Josh Kreutz. The trio have helped the youngsters on the team grow and develop. Kelly is a Holy Cross commit who will be key this year. Meanwhile, the Wildcats also graduated plenty of

playmakers in the offseason, but return a number of playmakers. Welcsh and Cmiel will play both ways, starting at

safety and corner in addition to playing lead roles on offense. Erik Daugenti will start opposite Cmiel at corner, while Merick Hartley and Emmett Hanna will begin the year as starting safeties. Linebacker is perhaps the strength of the de-

fense, if not the team. Connor Francz will lead the way in Week 1 as a fast and strong outside line-backer. Aidan Conway will make his first start at middle linebacker after a successful hockey season as a defenseman. Aidan Hubbard, Aidan Crummie, and Nick Velotta will all rotate in depending on the situation, too. Anthony Gerace anchors the defensive line. The

big defensive end racked up 26.5 tackles, 6.5 tack-les per loss, and 3 sacks last year. Bennett Adler will start across from him at end in the 3-3-5. Max Watters and Rico Levert will be responsible for plugging the middle at nose tackle.SPECIAL TEAMSCoach Kyle plans to use special teams as a

weapon this year, and with good reason, as Rory McConville and Declan Mangan return as strong-legged kickers. Junior Nate Van Zelst will handle the kicking duties for Loyola.

2501 Franklin Street Michigan City, INBuilt: 1996Renovated: 2009Playing Surface: Field TurfSeating Capacity: 4,000 While the current Ames Field dates back to 1996, the history of the facility in Michigan City, Indiana dates back to the 1950s. Constructed by the Michigan City Rotary Club in the 1938, Ames Field was built as a multipurpose sports facility, named in honor of druggist and busi-nessman George Ames, a mayor of Michigan City who passed away in 1890. In the late 1950s, the complex hosted the Michi-gan City White Caps, a baseball club in the Midwest League. The White Caps served as an affiliate of the New York/San Francisco Giants from 1956-1959 be-fore folding in the winter of 1959. Juan Marichal pitched for the White Caps, winning Mid-west Pitcher of the Year honors in 1958. Future major leaguers Matty Alou and Manny Mota also played for the club. In 1995, the complex was demolished to build the current Ames Field. The Michigan City Area School Board decided against a baseball field, instead build-ing a $4.7 million football and soccer stadium seat-ing 4,000 fans and hosting a press box. A red-brick facade entrance welcomes fans. A newly consolidated Michigan City High School played its first football game in 1995. Since then, the facility has hosted the Wolves. Grass originally graced the field, with former Chi-cago White Sox head groundskeeper Roger Bossard consulting on the work. In 2009, artificial field turf replaced the grass.
