I was blessed this past yearwith the honor of sitting atthe bedside of one of my veryfirst clients while I assistedhim and his wife witharranging for hospice.

These are long termclients and we have walkedquite a long journey together. Many, many yearsago this couple came in tosee me with the little moneythey had saved.

They told me their hopesand dreams for when theyretired. We came up with aplan. Over the years theyhave developed their wealththe old fashioned way.

They worked hard, kepttheir expenses low, saved alot, got laid off, changed jobs, rolled over pensions, and401k’s. Life didn’t always goas planned.

We adjusted our plan toaccommodate life. A fewyears ago we worked with anestate planning attorney todevelop a trust, a living will,a power of attorney, a healthcare directive.

They bit the bullet andinvested in a joint long-termcare policy. Finally, theyretired. Within a couple ofmonths of retiring, Chuckwas diagnosed with terminalcancer.

As I walked down the hallof the hospital to his room, Icouldn’t help but think aboutall of the sacrifices they hadmade and all the planningwe had done. As I entered hisroom, he recognized me andsaid “Melanie, this is notwhat we had planned!” I said“I know.

We’ve got to get back ontrack!” We laughed for a

moment and then cried for afew. “ I want you to promiseme that you will help Maryfigure out all of the financialstuff and I want you to makesure she takes the next stepand holds on to the things wehad dreamed” he said, and Ipromised I would.

Sometimes things workout exactly as we planned.Sometimes God has a differ-ent plan. In the end, you willwant to know, that no matterwhat, your loved ones can goon and that you have takencare of them. A life welllived… beginning with theend in mind. And tomorrow,I begin again…with Mary.

I am so very grateful that Iget to do what I do and helppeople along this journey. For more information go towww.waterstonewealth.com.Melanie Hasty-Grant,Experienced LicensedProfessional Counselor andManaging Principal atWaterstone Private WealthManagement. LPL Financial.Member FINRA/SIPC.

Many times people think theyhave a cold or sinus infection, when what they are experiencingis allergy induced sinusitis. Infact, according to the Center forDisease Control (CDC), 13 percent of adults (about 30 million people) have been diagnosed with sinusitis. TheU.S. Center for Health Statisticsreports that the number onechronic complaint in the UnitedStates for the past 20 years hasbeen sinus problems. When youcombine the numbers betweenchronic sinusitis with upper respiratory allergies, the numberof people with sinus problemsrises to a whopping 60 million –a quarter of the population.

Wanda Harris, doctor ofnaturopathy, The Herbal Lady inOwasso, is always amazed by thenumber of people who havebeen prescribed antibiotics forthese issues. “Chronic sinusproblems stem from inflamma-tion, which only makes themmore likely to become infected,”Dr. Wanda points out. “Andanother large part is due to viralinfections, like a cold. Anti-biotics only work on bacterialinfections.” She also notes thatmany people take antihistaminesto combat allergies and sinusitis,

free-range organic chicken, andgrass-fed organic meats from buffalo, lamb and beef. “Thesefoods help to balance the digestive system while eliminating allergic reactions,”says Dr. Wanda.

Sometimes food allergensaren’t the problem. A personmay just be suffering from poordigestion, in which foods are notbroken down properly in the

but these only address the symptoms and are not a cure forproblems that Dr. Wandabelieves result from a weakimmune system.

“If you can build up theimmune system, you can get ridof inflammation and reducesinus problems,” says Dr.Wanda, who says that the healthof the immune system originatesin the colon. “There are manynatural ways to combat theseproblems without the use ofantibiotics and antihistamines.”Dr. Wanda first recommends aperson address his or her diet toascertain if certain foods arecausing the allergy problems. The most common contributorsto food allergies are dairy products and gluten-bearinggrains like wheat, rye and barley. She suggests that patients tryfasting from these foods for afew days, and if their symptomsclear up, these foods are proba-bly contributing factors. Thepatient should then replace thefoods with organically-grownfruits and vegetables, legumes, and gluten-free grains such asbrown rice and corn. The patientcan also partake of a modestamount of fermented dairy products like yogurt and kefir,

digestive tract, causing stagna-tion which creates congestion inthe lymphatic system and translates to the sinuses. Toimprove digestive health, Dr.Wanda recommends addingproper enzymes to the dietthrough supplements fromNature’s Sunshine, likeProactazyme, Food Enzymes, orHigh Potency Protease, all takenwith lots of water to help break

up the mucous the digestive tractis producing. She also recom-mends a good colon cleanse, likeNature’s Sunshine’s CleanStartor Tiao He Cleanse. To keep thedigestive tract clean, she recommends fiber supplementslike Nature’s Three or PsylliumHulls Combination and probiotics like Probiotic Elevenor Bifidophius Flora Force.

For immediate sinusitisrelief while establishing theselong-term objectives, Dr. Wandarecommends nasal irrigationwith sea salt and warm water ineither a bulb syringe or Neti Potto help flush out trappedmucous and heal the cilia in thesinuses, which are hairs liningthe mucous membrane and aredesigned to help clean the airways. To break up congestion, she recommends traditionalherbal remedies from Nature’sSunshine like Fenugreek andThyme, ALJ, and if the mucousis yellow or green, Goldensealand Echinacea and HighPotency Garlic.

There are all kinds of naturalremedies for sinusitis, and Dr.Wanda Harris, The Herbal Lady, wants to help find the right onefor you. To begin on your journey to a better immune system and healthier sinuses, callto set up your consultation andpersonalized plan.

When Old Man Winter driveseveryone indoors, most peopleonly get exposed to sunlightwhen they run to and from theircars on a clear day. Since sun-light is a major source of one ofa human’s most necessary nutrients, Vitamin D, and sincethis vitamin releases mood-enhancing endorphins into thebody, is it any wonder many ofus often experience the wintertime blues?

But you donot have to have been diagnosedwith SAD to experience theblahs that come with cold

skin, tanning, and methods toenhance your tanning experi-ence, and they have been trainedto help assess different skin typesand to advise the right level and

pace of tanning. “Our numberone goal has always been to never burn people,” Meganrelates. To help keep your skinsoft and supple while still receiving the optimum tan

weather. “Being in the sun justmakes you feel good,” saysMegan. “But during the winteryou won’t experience thisbecause you’re all bundled up.”

This makes winter the perfect time to start visitingTouch of Sun in Owasso orSand Springs. Sessions are reasonablypriced and packages can be purchased by the month. Touchof Sun does not operate by thedreaded contract system; rather, they offer discounts for consecu-tively purchased months. Singlesessions are also available. Touchof Sun employees are “SmartTan Certified,” which meansthey have been educated on

experience, Touch of Sun alsooffers a wide variety of lotionsand tan enhancers fromAustralian Gold and DesignerSkin, with a 25 percent discount

on these products with activepackages.

For those who simply wantthe look of a tan without anytime under the lamps, Touch ofSun also offers Versa Spa™ by

Magic Tan. “The new Versa Spa™ system is a full body treatmentsystem that allows you to selectfrom a combination of solutionsthat will bronze and smooth yourskin,” says Megan. “Rather thana simple tint, Versa Spa™ createsa complete spa-like session thatresults in a healthy, natural look.”

“We make a great teambecause we work so well togetherand balance each other out,” saidJan. “I do all the quilting, andTammy handles the garments

Get a handle on your finances in2013. Are you wasting money? We’ve compiled a list of moneyboo-boos that could be costingyou your hard-earned money.RCB Bank loan officers MattStreeter and Michelle Milleroffer their advice on how to correct the mistakes.

1. Not making a budget – orattempting to stay near it. Sitdown and really look at yourmonthly expenses, Miller suggests. Where might you beable to cut? Just looking at whereyour money actually goes is a great tool to saving. “That $1.50coffee doesn’t seem like a lot atthe time until you realize cuttingit can save $350 a year,” she says.

2. Not building an emergency fund – Any savingsis better than no savings. MattStreeter says your annual bonus, tax refund or a small amounteach month is a great way tostart. “You just have to start setting it aside,” he says. Milleradds, “It is easier to save if youhave the money automaticallydeducted from your paycheck ormain checking account.”

3. Not paying your creditcards off each month – “It’slike tossing your money out the

insurance companies review iteach year, so why don’t you?”Streeter asks. Shop around occasionally to see if there’s abetter deal.

7. Not having a retirementplan – “Everyone should startsaving for retirement as early aspossible,” says Miller. If youremployer doesn’t have a 401kprogram, open an IRA. Even$10 a paycheck can add up overthe years.

8. Housing expense exceeds30% of your gross income – Ifyour housing expenses are morethan 30% of your gross income, you should consider scalingback, suggests Miller. “Today’seconomy is tough, and if youexceed this ratio you are vulnerable to serious financialproblems with any disruption ofwages or family emergencies.”

ADDITIONAL TIPS:Everyone makes bad moneydecisions from time to time. The key is to recognize themwhen they happen.

Share your goals and concernswith family, or a friend. Theymay have a solution that workedfor them that could also work foryou. They can also help hold you

window,” Streeter says. “Moneyspent on interest charges and latefees can add up fast. After interest, how much did thatsweater you bought with yourcredit card really cost?”

4. Living above your means –Carrying a balance on a creditcard can become crippling if itgets out of hand. A better solution is to have a specialaccount that you use for“extras,” says Miller. Make a pactwith yourself to set aside a smallamount every paycheck. “Ideallyyou save up the cash and youdon’t need to use credit; however, no interest financingfor large ticket items can be agood alternative. As long as youcan pay it off in the free timeallotted,” Miller says.

5. Impulse buying – “If youcan’t give yourself a day to thinkabout a purchase, that’s animpulse,” says Streeter. “Evenworse, if you put that impulsebuy on a credit card.” If you findyourself in this situation, backaway and go home.

6. Not reviewing your insurance needs annually – orat least every two years. Thisincludes auto, homeowners, lifeand others. “Your employer and

accountable for your goals.

Make a list of three achievablefinancial goals. Example: set upan auto transfer to your savingsaccount; bring lunch from homeinstead of eating out every day;or consider adjusting yourcable/internet package.

Malissa Spacek of BA Med Spa& Weight Loss Center hasstrong concerns over the grimoutlook concerning Oklahoma’sobesity percentage, which was atan alarming rate of 31.4 percentin 2012, up from 30.4 percentjust one year prior. The nationalobesity rate is 35.7 percent.“This is a crucial and dangerousissue, but the great thing is thatthis is something we can dosomething about.”

To show faith in this laststatement, BA Med Spa &Weight Loss Center is initiatingits 2013 90-Day Weight LossChallenge. Clients who beginthe medically supervised program in January, whichincludes an initial visit and evaluation with lab tests, will beweighed at the beginning andend of 90 days. Winners will bedetermined by most pounds lostas a percentage of body weight. The three finalists will receiveprizes which will include amakeover from Anna Christy’sAveda Salon, personal trainingfrom Buster Brown, gift certificates from Legends

is estimated that obesity-relatedhealth issues cost U.S. adults anapproximate $147 billion, whichaveraged a cost of around$1,400 per obese person.

With these risks and coststaken into consideration, anycost involved with entering amedically supervised weight lossprogram like the 90-Day WeightLoss Challenge seems minimal. One could consider this to be aninvestment in a happier, healthi-er future. As Malissa says, “Assoon as people start to loseweight, their bodies start tofunction properly because thebody is going back to where it issupposed to be, and at a healthyweight that body is likely to lastlonger.”

Weight loss is accomplishedby creating new, healthy habits, such as eating more fruits andvegetables, increasing physicalactivity, and decreasing one’sconsumption of sugary drinksand high energy dense, highcalorie foods.

Weight loss often increasesone’s confidence and selfesteem, but combating obesity isimportant for far more than cosmetic reasons. According tothe Centers for Disease Control, obesity is related to a whole hostof health problems and diseases, including coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, somecancers (including endometrial, breast and colon), high cholesterol, sleep apnea and other respiratory problems, osteoarthritis, reproductivehealth complications, and somemental health conditions likedepression. Therefore it is nosurprise that the costs of obesityreported by the CDC are stag-gering. For example, in 2008, it

This brand-new technology produces a3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, theiBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well.

When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between theimplant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precisemeasurements made dynamically inreal time.

There are only five “iBlock” units in theUnited States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

Kathy Trevino had been overweight her entire life, fromchildhood throughout herteenage and adult years. Whenshe had children in her late twenties, the pounds really beganto pack on and her weight problem got worse and worse. Bythe time she was in her early forties, she weighed 262 poundsat 5’ 4”. “I had severe chronicpain in my lower back, and myphysician told me that if I didn’tdo something about my weight, Iwould be in a wheelchair by theage of 50,” says Kathy.

One of Kathy’s coworkerssuggested she look into weightloss surgery, and that her insur-ance might pay for it because itwas causing her back pain. Kathychecked with her insurance com-pany and was referred to Dr.Luis Gorospe at OklahomaPremier Bariatrics. “I had heardabout Lap-Band surgery withcelebrities like Al Roker, andfound out that it is less invasiveand has a quicker recovery timethan other weight loss surgeries.I went to Dr. Gorospe’s seminarand decided I had to nothing tolose,” says Kathy.

In December of 2007, Dr.Gorospe performed Lap-Band

even for my children. I’m nolonger the obese mom; I’m anormal mom.”

Kathy recommends Dr.Gorospe to anyone consideringweight loss surgery. “Dr.Gorospe has an excellent bedsidemanner, and he will actuallyspend time with you to go overyour questions and concerns. Ibelieve he’s not only a good doctor, but a good person.”

If you are morbidly obese

surgery on Kathy, and her lifehasn’t been the same since.Kathy has lost around 110pounds and kept the weight off.“The changes in my life havebeen dramatic. I no longer havepain in my lower back, I canmove around much better, I haveso much more energy, and I’mable to see my kneecaps! There’salso the physical part – at 47, I’venever looked better. It haschanged every aspect of my life,

and suffering from medical complications stemming frombeing overweight, surgery may bethe right answer for you. Withso many options available, it canbe stressful and confusing choosing where to go, who tosee, and what surgery is right foryou. To help answer these questions, Dr. Gorospe offersfree weekly seminars.

During the seminars, Dr.Gorospe explains the entireprocess from beginning to endand assists the small group ofattendees in determining if theyare qualified for surgery. Heoffers roux-en-y gastric bypass, adjustable banding (i.e. the Lap-Band surgery that Kathyreceived), and gastric sleeve surgeries.

Gastric bypass and gastricsleeve surgeries are generally preferred for patients who needto lose a very large amount ofweight (between 80 and 100pounds, with a body mass indexor 40 of higher) and suffer fromco-morbid conditions such asdiabetes and high blood pressure. “These surgerieschange the person’s hormonalcomponents immediately, andthere is almost 100 percent

improvement of their diabetes ifthey are on one oral medicationonly. Approximately 80 percentof patients who were on highblood pressure medications nolonger need their meds afterthese surgeries,” explains Dr.Gorospe. “Lap-Band surgery istypically for those who need tolose a smaller amount of weight, who are approximately 50pounds overweight with a BMIof 30 to 34.”

Dr. Gorospe says the bestpart of his job is seeing theincredible changes that takeplace in his patients’ lives.“Before the surgery, many of mypatients are depressed, hate theirrelationship with food, and aretired all time. When they losethe weight, their lives are prolonged and their quality oflife is greatly improved. Theirrelationships with loved ones arebetter, and they’re able to dothings they’ve never been able tobefore. It’s very gratifying tohelp people live longer, healthier, happier lives.”

Trust Mattersmanage money, the Grants agree.Yesterday’s accepted school of practicewas to buy quality investments and holdthem for the long term. “This is still themainstream school of thought,” saidMelanie, “but the market has proven overthe last 14 years that the philosophy is nolonger effective. You now need muchmore.” Melanie refers to Waterstone’soverall strategy as “grow, preserve, protect.”

“It’s a more tactical, active and protective way of managing money,” sheexplains. Melanie says that clients now

need a “buy side” and a “sell side” strate-gy, a well thought-out plan and strategy todetermine when and why they are buyingan investment, and what they expect toaccomplish. It’s not acceptable to justthrow money in the market and hope forthe best. Waterstone clients want andneed strategies to help them meet goalsfor safety and security.

We may call it “service,” but we nowneed something that goes way beyondthat. We need someone who is going tobe there for us to face whatever liesahead. Melanie summarizes it perfectly:

Waterstone will be your advocate, to helpyou think clearly and get things done. That's why trust truly matters. You areour client, not your money.”

•Give it the sniff test andpay special attention to a moldyor musty smell.

•Look at the carpet andupholstery for water-stain marks, rust stains or new or mismatchedupholstery. A five-year-old carwith brand-new upholstery is asign that something may havebeen replaced.

•Check for rust on screws inthe console area, under floormats, and look under the dash-board for dried mud or otherflood residue.

•Have the car inspected by amechanic, who can put it on a liftand check the undercarriage forwater damage or debris fromfloodwaters.

•Look under the hood formud or grit in the alternator, behind wires and around smallopenings in starter motors andpower steering pumps.

Brides, Plan Your Day in a Weekend

You turn it on and it flowsfrom your tap, easy, convenient, potable water, technologically advanced purified water wholly fit forhuman consumption – but isit? Despite clean water laws, our tap water continues to becontaminated with a host ofpollutants – pollutants knownto increase the risk of serioushealth conditions. Conditionsamplified by the addition ofchloramines -a combination ofchlorine and ammonia, to ourdrinking water. Sounds morelike something you wouldclean with than drink.

Worldwide chlorine hasbeen used to disinfect drinkingwater. Although it is far saferthan the bacteria it destroys, when combined with chloramines and chlorine dioxide a powerful carcino-genic Trihalomethane (THMs)is formed. Linked to liver, kidney and nervous systemdisorders, THMs are formedwhen chlorine reacts with naturally occurring materialsfound in water. If you thinkdrinking bottled water protects you from these harmful contaminants, I amthe bearer of bad news. 40%of bottled water is bottled tapwater.

Yes, you read correctly. Notonly is 40% of bottled watertap water, bottled water mayor may not have received additional filtration. An inde-pendent study done by theEnvironmental Working Groupfound arsenic, THMs and 36other harmful pollutants hidden in bottled water. Inaddition, drinking from a plastic bottle is a bad idea.Plastic bottles containBisphenol- A or BPA, a synthetic hormone disruptorlinked to learning and behavioral problems, alteredimmune system function, prostate and breast cancers, early puberty in both genders, and a contributor to the healthrisks surrounding obesity. There is, however, a way to protect yourself, your family, and loved ones.

The most economical andenvironmentally sound choiceyou and your family can makeis to purchase and install awater filter in your home.Granular Carbon and CarbonBlock Filters are the most common types of counter topand under counter water filters. Granular activated carbon is recognized by theEPA as the best available technology for the removal oforganic chemicals such aschloramines, herbicides, pesticides and industrialchemicals.

For 26 years EnvironmentalResources has provided waterand air filtration services toTulsa businesses and resi-dences. Sold, installed andmaintained, our filters removea host of contaminants foundin drinking water. From thetap over the kitchen and bathroom sinks to shower-heads, ice machines, watercoolers, refrigerators, wholehouse systems, whole businesses and more, our timetested water filters deliverpure, great tasting water.Today drinking filtered water is simply a health consciousthing to do. Why not let our filters make a positive changein your life?

With an additional 1,000 squarefeet, vaulted ceilings, a suspended wood floor in the aerobic room and other amenities, Fitness Time forLadies is open for business intheir new location at the NorthPark Medical Center located atthe corner of Highway 66 Northand Lowery Road.

The new 5,000-square-footgym – for women only –includes a much larger aerobicroom with a little over 1,000square feet to accommodate thegrowing demand for Zumba fitness classes, step and regularaerobics, yoga, and kickboxing.

The former facility’s location did not allow room forgrowth, says Dr. Kyle Hrdlicka, owner. “We had a lot of requestsfor a larger Zumba room, but wehad no capability to grow at ourformer location.”

A larger facility and room togrow were two reasons Dr.Hrdlicka cited for the move.“We also have many clients wholive on this side of town in theSequoyah area. This move pro-vides a facility to meet the needsof the women in this area.”

In addition to the increasedspace for classes, Fitness Timefor Ladies now offers four

equipment and tanning beds.High school and college studentsare now eligible for a discount at$43.99 per month, whichincludes the full use of amenities.

The upscale 24/7 women’sfitness center also offers a fullline of aerobic exercise equipment, including treadmills, stationary bicycles, stair steppersand elliptical machines, all outfitted with televisions.

In addition to classes andaerobic equipment, Fitness Timefor Ladies offers Nautilusstrength training equipment aswell as free weights to help clubmembers get in tip-top shape.“For the women who get overwhelmed when they walkinto a gym full of equipment, apersonal trainer is available onSaturday at 10:30 a.m. for a newmember orientation session onall of the gym equipment,” headds. “And it’s free.”

What else is free? The all-inclusive gym includes use ofthe sauna and a massage chair.“When you compare FitnessTime to other gyms, you need tocompare apples to apples,” saysDr. Hrdlicka. “If you add upeverything available at our gym,you will find that if you paid for

tanning beds and two showersand includes all-new audio andvideo surveillance equipmentthroughout the building. “Wealso have a children’s room available for mothers and a security system so that they canview their children on the closedcircuit televisions while workingout,” says Dr. Hrdlicka. “We donot, however, offer child care.”

What sets Fitness Time forLadies apart from other gyms inthe Claremore area? Besidesbeing for women only, theatmosphere is personal, private, clean and aesthetically pleasing. It is also an all-inclusive gym, which means that there are noextra charges for fitness classesor tanning. “Many gyms chargeextra for their classes,” says Dr.Hrdlicka. “We do not. Whenyou pay your monthly fee, youhave full use of our facility, including tanning. You get thewhole gym for the price of a tanning membership.”

The all-inclusive membership, if paid monthly, is$49.05. However, if paid inadvance, the membership fee isonly $40 per month or $480 fora year. Rates have not increased, but the facility has more to offerin the way of space, additional

them separately at others, wecome out on top. In addition, wepride ourselves on having a cleangym. We are very particularabout staying clean and keepingthis place a personal, privateatmosphere for our ladies. Wewant the gym to feel like it is anextension of their home.”

Home for the relocatedwomen’s gym is now next doorto Mobility Plus and immediately behind TulsaTeachers Credit Union. The

name and faces are the same;only the location has changed asFitness Time for Ladies opens itsdoors to a brighter, larger facilityto accommodate area women’sfitness needs.

The women’s workout facility has a new, larger location and more amenities, with the same great monthly rate.
