Life transitions are a time ofchange ― “what was” nolonger exists and “what will be”has not yet taken shape. Thesechanges almost always comewith a tidal wave of feelings.Shock, fear, loss of identity andself-esteem, guilt, confusion, feeling overwhelmed, andanger are some of the mostcommon emotions folks experience during a major lifetransition. In addition, peopleoften find their relationshipswith family and friends beginto change. Having been a marriage and family therapistand now a financial advisor formore than two decades, I haveseen and experienced morethan a few of life’s changes. Some of the biggest life transitions that I see are loss ofa loved one, divorce, loss of ajob, retirement, and sale of a business. There are, of course, many more, but these seem totop the list.

By definition, a transition isa temporary condition.Although, it certainly doesn’tfeel like it! These tough timesare often marked by a painfulperiod of letting go, reassess-ing, and coming to terms withthe new reality of our lives. Oneof the keys to a successful transition is to take the time tore-examine your sense of

purpose and consider your newchoices in light of your mostimportant life goals.Uncertainty and emotionsaffect your decisions.Understanding this and seekinghelpful, non-biased advice, especially when it comes toyour money, is really impor-tant. Family and friends oftenoffer lots of advice. They usually mean well but it may ormay not be the best financial decision for you. Rememberthese 3 things when goingthrough a difficult transition:

1)UNCERTAINTY ― Eachtime we go through a transition we face new responsibilities and choices. Asa result, our emotions becomemore turbulent and we have afeeling of uncertainty.Remember that transitionshave a beginning and an end,

sometimes taking as much as 5years from start to finish…butthey are time limited!

2)EMOTIONS― Be aware ofthe negative emotions thatshow up during a transitionand can last for a few yearsafter: abandonment, fear, grief, and low self-esteem. All ofthese emotions can lead tofeeling overwhelmed ― physical fatigue and making short-term decisions can bedisastrous. Take your time and make clear and rational decisions.

3)DECISIONS― The decisionswe make while in transitionwill shape our future as wesettle into our “new normal.”Each decision will have a personal and a financial consequence. The secrets tosuccessful decision makingwhile in transition begin withunderstanding your newresources, organizing and prioritizing your choices, andallocating your resources tocreate the life you would mostlike to live. There is an old Native Americanproverb that says, “Never criticize a man until you havewalked a mile in his moccasins.”This saying is often used in reference to blame or judgment, but it can also be applied to theareas of empathy and under-standing. Simply put: a personwho has “been there” can betterhelp navigate someone througha challenging or difficult situation than one who has not.

That’s why David Merrimanand his team at David MerrimanInsurance Agency – State FarmInsurance is the perfect choicefor all your small business insurance needs. “I feel I have anunderstanding of small businessowners with regards to employeebenefits, payroll, insurance andmore, because I am a small business owner myself,” saysDavid. “I can discuss businessowners’ worries and truly understand things they experi-ence on a daily basis – and alsohelp them with products andservices that State Farm offers.”

When approached by smallbusiness owners, David firsthelps them identify their goalsand needs by asking questionsabout what is most important to

more smoothly. Small businessescarry policies like general liability, workers’ compensation, employer practices liability, commercial auto, and retirementplanning as an employee benefit.

them, both today and in thefuture. He then will help themassess their existing policies andproducts, to see how well thoseproducts are fulfilling theirgoals. David feels it is veryimportant to evaluate each product in relation to the other, because sometimes clients willhave too much coverage in someareas and not enough in others– or even no coverage in someareas at all. It is also importantto assess the state of the business owner’s assets, liabilities and income in order tomake better decisions on neededproducts and help the clientwith protection, growth andmanagement of their assets.Through this discussion, Davidis able to assess gaps in coverageand suggest ways to fill thosegaps, encourage the client to setpriorities in both needs andgoals, and help the client comeup with a plan of action that willhelp him or her move towardsuccessful fulfillment of insurance and business goals.

David explains that manycompanies like to have all theirpolicies with one companybecause it makes things muchsimpler and helps things run

By visiting with one of DavidMerriman’s insurance agents, business owners can be sure theyare hearing the voice of experience, from someone whohas truly walked in his or her

shoes. “We talk commercialbusiness insurance every day inour office, because we have todeal with that issue ourselves,”says David. “And we talk to individual clients about theiroccupations, so we are able toidentify the areas in which wecan help.”

David relates that oftensmall business clients are so happy with how his agency andState Farm fulfills their businessneeds, they often extend therelationship into their personalinsurance needs as well. “If I canhelp a client with his or hersmall business insurance needs,I might even be able to helpwith their personal policies aswell, like home, life and auto,”he says.

Have you pushed the thermostat up above 70, pulledout the throws and warm blankets, thrown another logon an already flaming fire, found yourself dressing in multiple layers? Most of us willrespond with an astounding“YES!” Our extremities dictateand we acknowledge theimportance of staying warmand protected in these everchanging temperatures. Whatthey don’t dictate is our needto remain hydrated. Coldweather, drier air, low humidityand exposure to dry furnaceheat can lead to higher bloodpressures, narrow arteries, drycoughs, flaky skin, chapped lipsand those annoying seasonalheadaches – all of which areoutward signs that our bodyneeds more fluid. Did youknow waiting until your thirstymeans your body is alreadyexperiencing mild dehydration?Drinking the right amount ofwater is essential to stayinghealthy.

Is good clean water a miracledrug? Opinions differ, howeverrecent studies have found staying hydrated may protectyour heart and reduce the riskof heart attack. Researchers atLoma Linda University foundwomen who drank more thanfive glasses of water a day were

41% less likely to die from aheart attack during the studyperiod than those who drankless than two glasses. The protective effect of water waseven greater in men. Men whodrank more water had a 54%lower risk of a fatal heartattack. When researchersincluded the consumption ofcoffee, tea, juice, milk, andalcohol the risk of heart attackincreased. They found thatwomen who drank largeamounts of liquids other thanwater were more than twice aslikely to die of a heart attack, and non-water drinking menhad a 46% increase in risk.Water is absorbed quickly andeasily into the bloodstream, thinning the blood, and helping to prevent artery clogging clots. We use water forbreathing, sweating, and nutrition absorption; as a

lubricant for fluid around joints, eyes, spinal cords and membranes. Water cleans oursystems, provides energy bycarrying nutrients to body cellsand maintains the optimummoist environment for theproper functioning of ear, nose, throat, and lungs. Most importantly water regulatesour overall body temperature.

How much water do weneed? We know climate, age, medical conditions, exerciseroutines, diet and lifestyles differ. We know a person whoperspires heavily will need todrink more water, and medicalconditions such as diabetes, heart disease, cystic fibrosis, and some medications cancause dehydration. There arenumerous adages surroundinghow much water we shoulddrink each day. Some say eightglasses of water a day whileothers say drink half your bodyweight in ounces. Despite thesedifferences the fact remains, drinking the right amount ofwater is heart healthy and keyto healthy living.

The economics are as simpleas the health benefits. With theaddition of a water filter, clean, tasty, water can come directlyfrom your tap. Filtered water ishealth conscious, and environ-mentally sound.

Want a Healthy Heart? Drink Water.

Surgeon Has Knee Up on the Competition

This brand-new technology produces a3-D image of the knee which allows for superior surgical accuracy and alignment. When compared to more traditional forms of navigation, theiBlock cutting guide provides a significant advantage not only for the surgeon, but for the patient as well.

When a joint is replaced, even a miniscule misalignment between theimplant and the bones can harm joint performance and longevity. This innovative technique allows for precisemeasurements made dynamically inreal time.

There are only five “iBlock” units in theUnited States, and this technology is available in Tulsa only with Dr. LaButti.

When Scott and Stephanie Greenland moved to Claremore after a medical incident changed thelife of their son, Ben, they had no idea God was orchestrating the little details of their life rightbefore their eyes. They had been living in the panhandle region when Ben was born. At sixweeks old, Ben was diagnosed with a heart murmur, which led to heart surgery in Kansas City. While Ben was in recovery, he started having seizures that were unexplainable. The doctorsdetermined after an MRI that he had a massive stroke that affected the left side of his brain.

The Greenlands were told that Ben might not live and if he did, he would likely have severe lifelong disabilities. “I remember telling God if He is who He says He is, I need Him to show upBIG right now,” says Stephanie. “I opened my Bible up to the story of Lazarus being raised fromthe dead, and I specifically remember it saying this sickness will not end in death but in theglory of God. I knew then that God was showing up.”

The Greenlands put their trust in God as they journeyed to Claremore to be closer to family, withno jobs or ideas as to what they would do next. Four months later, Scott took the Youth Pastorposition with First Baptist Church. In doing so, he met Bret McGuire, co-owner of Summit, whotold him all about the pediatric services offered right in their new hometown.

At 14 months old, Ben began therapy at Summit Pediatric Therapies. The location proved to be great since he received physical, occupational and speech therapy servicesseveral times a week. When Ben started at Summit, he was not walking, unable to hold a bottle, and his right arm was contracted with his hand in his mouth a lot. Hecould not open his right hand or grasp anything and was not talking.

Today, Ben is five and attending Claremont Elementary Special Needs Class five days a week for a half day under the direction of Jennifer Esau. Thanks to his many therapists, Ben is walking, running, grasping things, drinking out of a straw, eating, and communicating.

He receives pool therapy once a month with his therapist Terry Rairdon, COTA, and they work on range of motion and strengthening while in the water. Rairdon said thatBen can put his shoes and socks on independently and can hold a cup.

Jennifer Swinney, a speech therapist, has worked with Ben on following directions, identifying objects, being able to express himself in longer sentences, articulatinghis words, colors and concepts, as well as learning to eat a variety of foods and textures. “I have seen a huge improvement in the area of feeding, which is a big dealbecause eating is such a social thing as well as sensory and oral motor skills,” says Swinney.

Ben has had visual difficulties since the stroke. “He has been diagnosed with Cortical Vision Impairment, which basicallymeans his brain doesn’t read what his eyes see,” states Stephanie. “It’s like pieces of his vision are missing. SummitPediatric Therapies has been great about doing research and going the extra mile to learn all they can to treat Benwith the best therapies out there, especially with the vision side of it since it affects so many areas of his life.”

Ben no longer has physical therapy but continues with occupational therapy and speech therapy. His big sister,Anna, has always played a crucial role in working with Ben throughout the day. “Whatever big sister can do,Ben wants to do,” states Stephanie. The Greenlands just welcomed their third child, Jackson Mark, into theirlives on Jan. 11th.

“The people at Summit show such compassion and concern on a weekly basis,” states Stephanie. “He’s nottheir kid, but they pour their energy and resources into our son and our family, and I’m so grateful.”
