Lots of great things going on—particularly for our children and youth. In fact, we have 32 children at camp this week and our youngest campers just returned on Sunday from Sonshine Camp. Our new playground is up thanks to our United Methodist Men. And our youth have had a great Youth Week and did an awesome job on Sunday leading all 3 of our worship services. These kinds of min- istries don’t happen by accident and it takes a lot of servants to help out. That is why we are designating August as “Ministry Emphasis Month.” Each Sunday we will be highlighting a different area of ministry. We are using the themes developed in the book Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations since we used that book as a guide for our Strategic Plan. The following areas will be recognized: August 1—Intentional Faith Development August 8—Passionate Worship August 15—Radical Hospitality August 22—Risk Taking Mission And Service August 29—Ministry Fair for All Servants On each Sunday we are preparing lists of “all” who help in that area. We know that it is really impossible to rec- ognize everyone by name, but we are going to try to put down as many as we can. Please excuse us in advance for not listing your name! However, I think you will be amazed to see how many people it takes to have a fruit- ful church. And this large number of servants is certainly one of the primary reasons that our church is growing and fruitful. To give an example of what we plan to do, I would like to recognize those that helped put up our new play- ground. Over a two day period working through the heat, the following servants helped our church to save about $9,000 based on what we would have been charged if we hadn’t done this ourselves. They are: We had 34 servants (or more, if I missed anyone’s name—sorry!) who worked hard to help us install the playground equipment. Your service will help us to reach children and their families for the kingdom of God. And over the next month we will be recognizing many, many more ser- vants. Thank you to all who serve! Our church helps dozens of families with utility bills using our Christmas Everyday Fund. The church office sees people almost everyday for this purpose. This is a thank you note we received this week—we wanted to share it with everyone: “Dear Church Members, Thank you so very much for the financial assistance you gave me last week. I have never had to ask for help. This has been such a struggle for me and my family lately. Everyone in the office was kind to me and made me feel it was going to be OK. I am truly grateful for your generosity. All our love and thanks!” Thank you for contributing to our Christmas Every-day Fund! It helps people like this get by during a rough time in their lives.

New Worship Service This Fall On September 12 our church will be launching a new contemporary worship service which will meet in Hogue Chapel at 11:11am. This service will feature the Youth Praise Band under the direction of Jarrod Elmore, our Contemporary Worship Leader. Our As-sociate Pastor, Taud Boatman, will be the principal speaker for this service. Our exist-ing service at 11:00am will continue to be a traditional service featuring music by the Heavenbound Choir with our Senior Pastor, Chris Tiger, being the principal speaker. There are several reasons for starting a new worship service, but the primary ones are: 1. We want to provide a worship environment which is appealing to our youth and elementary age children. We think that our youth will be very supportive of this service since they are providing musical leadership. 2. We want to reach new people. A new worship service provides new opportunities to be involved. 3. We want to provide an alternate time for a contemporary worship service. Since there has been only one contemporary service, you had to attend worship at 9:40am if you preferred contemporary worship. Now there will be options. We believe that some will choose to attend or help with Sunday School at 9:40am and attend worship at 11:11am. 4. We want everyone to have a worship experi-ence and a learning experience on Sunday morn-ings. Having 4 worship services on Sunday morn-ing will help this to happen for our children, youth and adults.

Thank You!Thank You!Thank You!Thank You!

Our blood drive was a success! The American Red Cross collected 27 pints, ahead of the projected 26! And for the 7 of you that were first-time donors—a SPECIAL thank you! Our next

blood drive will be held upstairs in the gym—date to be announced at

a later time.

Thank you for giving the GIFT OF LIFE!

ALL PARENTS OF YOUTH!

We will be having an all youth parents meet-ing on Sunday, August 29th at 2:30pm. We will be doing lots of discussion and plan-ning for the upcoming year—there’s lots of activities so bring your calendars and a pen!

Leadership Summit

August 5-6, 2010

Our church serves as an Assisting Church to a special training event called the Leadership Summit. The Leadership Summit is sponsored by Willow Creek Church in Chicago and one of the satellite locations is at First Baptist Church in Owasso. This year the Leadership Summit will be held on August 5-6. This is a wonderful opportunity for our church to participate in an outstanding event for leaders and those who are willing to step up as leaders. As an Assisting Church we are planning to have 25 people from our church attend. This al-lows us to get the lowest price available of $95. Please reserve your space as soon as possible. If you have any questions please talk to one of our pastors.

FUMC Owasso Gains National Recognition Our church has been recognized for growth and vibrancy! Pastor Chris recently had an opportunity to be interviewed by an organization called “The Foundation for Evangelism”. This is a note from The Foundation for Evangelism that we received:

“We at The Foundation for Evangelism have the opportunity to see The United Methodist Church at its best. Utilizing data and interviews, we recently began a study of churches that experienced a 20% or more attendance growth in 5 years. Very quickly, we realized that the information gained from these interviews was invaluable. “Celebrating Vibrant Churches” has been developed as an online resource for clergy and laity from across the connection who are seeking creative, successful evangelism practice ideas. Dr. Kenneth Lambert, Director of Church Relations, has interviewed pastors of select churches that have displayed some of the fastest growing attendance numbers in the na-tion. These interviews are featured on the “Celebrating Vibrant Churches” section of our website. First United Methodist Church of Owasso, Oklahoma is among the first to be recog-nized. Rev. Chris Tiger shares insights we feel may help others. We invite you to visit our website at www.FoundationForEvangelism.org to read this and other inspirational stories from pastors.”

In addition to the article, the foundation’s website has a picture of OUR CHURCH on their home page with the caption “Celebrating Vibrant Churches”! What an honor to be a part of this church family!

Staff News About a month ago we announced that Bethany Wood was resigning as our Financial Secretary to become a stay at home mom. We appreciate Bethany’s service to our church in that role. And we are glad to report that she and her family are continuing to serve our church in various ways as members of our church. We will miss Bethany being on staff, but are glad that “she isn’t going anywhere” as she puts it. We are also glad to announce that we have filled this position. Our new Financial Secretary is Nancy Green. She has many years of experience in accounting and served for 8 years on staff at First United Methodist Church in Tulsa as the controller and she is a Certified Public Account-ant. She is delighted to be working for a church again. She started her new position on July 26. Come by the church office and welcome Nancy to our church!

Special Offering

On July 18 we had the privilege of hearing Rev. Steve Bredesen share about his call to serve God in Uganda through Show Mercy Ministries. On the Sunday we received an offering for Steve which totaled $3,356. Our Mission Committee on July 28 will be discussing the amount our church will give on an ongoing basis to support this ministry.

Please plan to join us for fun, food and fellowship on Thursday, August

12th at 11:30am, for our monthly potluck luncheon. Share with us your favorite main dish or dessert. We are so pleased to have Barbara Barnes,

Manager of the Owasso Library, as our Guest Speaker!

A brief bio about Barbara, she is a member of our congregation and has been a Methodist her entire life. She was born in Mayfield Kansas, went to school in Wellington Kansas, did her undergraduate studies at OSU and went on to receive her Masters Degree in Library Science at UCAT/OSU and yes, she does bleed orange! Barbara started her career at the Collins-

ville library in 1991, and in 1997, she accepted the manager’s position at the Owasso Library. Bar-bara writes a weekly article for the Owasso Reporter and the Owasso Progress publications, she also facilitates the monthly “Book Club”. In addition to her managerial duties, she oversees the daily operations and staff at the library here and still finds time to be involved in civic affairs. She is an Ambassador for the Owasso Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Rotary Club. She has been blessed with three sons and three grandsons.

The Owasso Library is a very vital part of our commu-nity and we are so pleased that Barbara has made the time to bring us a very informative program. You may not know about the summer reading programs, or what home-connected services are offered, or the resources that are available to you and much more. Please plan to join us!

ACOLYTE TRAINING SCHEDULED Acolyte training is scheduled at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 29. Students entering third through fifth grades are invited to attend the training. Parents also are encouraged to attend the training. Serving as an acolyte gives children the opportunity to serve the church and participate in Sunday worship services. Acolytes are scheduled to serve during the traditional worship services at 8:20 a.m. and 11 a.m. Acolytes serve in the worship service by per-forming worship duties such as lighting and extinguishing altar candles. Our acolytes also assist the pastor when communion is served. Two acolytes are scheduled for each service. In the Methodist tradition, lighting of the altar candles in the wor-ship service symbolizes Jesus’ coming into the presence of our worshiping community. When the last altar candle is extin-guished, the candle lighter carries the light out of the worship service to symbolize that Jesus Christ is going out into the world where we are called to serve as Christian believers. It also sym-bolizes that Jesus Christ is for all people everywhere. If you have any questions about the training, please contact Ellen Kershaw at 371-5532 or the church office.

August UMM Breakfast The UMM will host their monthly breakfast on Saturday, August 7th at 7:30 AM. Yes, that is correct, 7:30AM. After breakfast the UMM will put the finishing touches on the playground by spreading the mulch in the Fall Zone around the new playground equipment. We will have a fairly quick breakfast and then get an early start on the playground so we can try to beat the heat. The Playground Committee will provide

lunch for the men if the project continues through noon. If you have not had a chance to share in the building of the playground, this is a great opportunity for you to pitch in and help us prepare the area for the kids. We hope you will join us for a hearty breakfast and a little bit of work. Please bring your shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows, as well as a big appetite for a great breakfast meal. The UMM are starting several men's small groups. These groups will be com-prised of 4 or 5 men and are intended to promote brotherly Christian growth, as well as encourage accountability and support to one another. If you are interested please contact Bert Abla or David Hoefer.
