WHAT WAS IT?The history of Mumbai recounts the

growth of a collection of seven islands

on the west coast of India, becoming

the commercial capital of the nation,

and one of the most populous cities in

WKHZRUOG2Q$XJXVWÀQDOO\India was declared independent. The

last British troops to leave India, the

First Battalion of the Somerset Light

Infantry, passed through the arcade of

the Gateway of India in Bombay on 28

February 1948, ending the 282 year

long period of the British in Bombay .

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL?The architecture of Mumbai blends

Gothic, Victorian, Art Deco, Indo-Sar-

acenic and contemporary architectural

styles. Many buildings, structures and

historical monuments remain from

the colonial era. Mumbai, after Mi-

ami, has the second largest number of

Art Deco buildings in the world. The

variety spans everything from hotels,

RIÀFH EXLOGLQJV EULGJHV PRQXPHQWVforts and gardens. Glimpses of the glo-

rios past are visible in every nook and

cranny of Mumbai.

downtowm Mumbai, some of which at-

tract tourists. The popular ones include:
