The Southwestand Paphos areaRoman Paphos was the islands

capital, and the 3rd century mosaics

here are the finest in the

Mediterranean. The atmosphere is

funloving and friendly, with plenty of

bars, pubs, discos, nightclubs and

innumerable eating places providinganything from choice Italian cuisine

to sizzling souvlaki off the spit.

Swimming in the bays deep, clear

waters is good. The coastline to the

north is peppered with small sandy

coves but the areas best beach is a

15 minute drive away at Coral Bay.

Paphos is the main resort centre from

which to explore this region of wild

coastline, unspoilt hillside villages

and natural beauty. It takes less than

an hour by car to reach Limassol.

This south-west corner of Cyprus has

an ambience all of its own: soft

breezes, old stone, elusive

enchantment and an air of antiquity.

This is the kingdom of Aphrodite, the

goddess of love, and her presence

seems to linger. Paphos itself isreally two towns, each with its own

character; Ktima on the cliff and Kato

Paphos by the sea, two kilometres

down the road. The one is

unchanged over centuries and

thoroughly Cypriot while the other

has expanded over the last twenty

years from a sleepy fishing village

and harbour into a bustling, busy,

sprawling cosmopolitan resort which

is still growing and is the centre for

the islands overseas property boom.

This very well established, popular hotel

with its own small sandy beach, has a long

existing reputation. It was completely re-

launched, refurbished and re-named in June

2003 and is now furnished and decorated

in a contemporary style. Special care has

been taken to create a family experience

with extra children's facilities (Children's

club Easter to end October and Christmas)

and spacious accommodation to meet

family needs. It is set amidst 8 acres of

landscaped gardens leading to the palm-fringed, newly designed seafront, with

right on the beach (part sand/part rock, so

partner in the very popular Sunbow

restaurant in Paphos and President of the

Paphos Restaurant Keepers Association.

He has built his inn amongst extensive

citrus groves in an oasis of rural calm yet

only 4kms from Paphos harbour. The spot

is ideal for walking, cycling and bird

watching. The small conference room is

suited to small group meetings. There is a

family atmosphere here, akin to that of a

Phytos Inn Geroskipou/Paphos

Geroskipou, PaphosTwo miles east of Ktima, this was on the

path of the ancient pilgrims road which led

to the Temple of Aphrodite. Here was the

goddesss Holy Garden (Ieros Kypos)

tended by countless maidens. This was, of

course, in the ancient days of the cult of

Aphrodite. Nowadays, Geroskipou is a large

modern village which has merged with

Paphos. It is the centre of the Turkish

Delight industry. The village possesses one

of the only 2 five-domed Byzantine

churches of Cyprus, Ayia Paraskevi, built in

the early 9th century and decorated during

the 10th and 11th centuries with frescos and

wall paintings. There are numerous

tavernas, coffee shops, banks,

supermarkets and other shops. On the

lower slopes of the village, nearer the sea, is

Phytos Inn.

Bay in its small garden, with the shops,

bars and restaurants of the main Coral Bay

high street within easy walking distance.

and relaxed feel and there is a paved

courtyard garden with almond and apricot

trees and a pergola. The beach is a few

minutes stroll, reached by stone steps, nottoo many but a little steep in parts.

11 kilometres (15 minutes drive) to the north of Paphos and 3 kilometres below the friendly, hillside village of Peyia is Coral Bay, the best natural beach in the area.

This is an established resort with many villas above a wide curve of dark golden sand. The summer heat is often tempered by a gentle breeze, the sea has a shallow

margin where children may play safely and, in the busier months, water sports on offer include pedaloes, water skiing, banana boats, wetbikes and windsurfing.

Close by the bay you will find four large hotels, banks, minimarkets for provisions and souvenirs, bars, restaurants and other shops. For casual alfresco meals, a couple

of bars/snack bars overlooking the sea and a large restaurant in the next bay are open during the day. More tavernas and local shops are a short drive away. A perfect

location for a casual seaside holiday with plenty to do. This is also an excellent base for touring the Paphos area, with all it has to offer. European Blue Flag beach.

the first deluxe boutique hotel on the

island built on a small peninsula above

Coral Bay. The beach, 20 metres below, is

the best in the Paphos area. This hotel is
