    Mexico Mexico City

    32 Sunvil Traveller

Mexico CityDespite its urban woes, the nations capital should not be overlooked. It is a city of epic proportionsand has an estimated population of 19 million. On the negative side, several million cars are rammedinto the capital, releasing tons of contamination into the air each year. At 2,250 metres above sea level, the city is surrounded by volcanic mountains that trap the pollution. In an effort to curb this problem, many vehicles are banned from using the roads one day a week.

Nonetheless, Mexico City boasts a fascinating mixture ofinteresting museums, excellent restaurants, delightfulsquares, lively music, street vendors, serene parks and

vibrant street life. The historic heart of the city is theenormous Zcalo square - which is one of the largestsquares in the world. It is surrounded by the presidentialpalace, cathedral and the excavated site of the main templeof the Aztec city Tenochtitlan founded on Lake Texcoco.

The citys markets are worth visiting both for theirextraordinarily varied wares but also for a glimpse of thefrenetic business activity conducted within. The Condesa

and Roma districts are firmly established as trendynightlife zones whilst the Historic Centre has beentransformed into a vibrant cultural quarter with notable old

    buildings and interesting museums.

Rising above the plains about 50 km north-east of MexicoCity is the archaeological site of Teotihuacn. The hugepyramids of the Sun and Moon are extremely impressive;the Sun is the third largest pyramid in the world.

We highly recommend spending a few nights in MexicoCity at the beginning or end of any trip.

Mexico Chiapas San Cristbal de Las Casas

    36 Sunvil Traveller

Chiapas San Cristbal de Las CasasThe rural state of Chiapas is a real gem, located in the southernmost corner of Mexico. It is blessedwith lush jungles that surround stunning Mayan ruins and waterfalls, and is host to some of the bestsites in the whole of the country including Palenque, Yaxchiln, Bonampak and Tonin. The indigenousresidents of the state shun modern fashion in favour of woollen ponchos and traditional dress.

At the heart of Chiapas lies the beautiful colonial highlandtown of San Cristbal de las Casas which is 2,100 m abovesea level. The city is charming, and an ideal spot to cool offafter the steamy lowlands. It is a pleasure to explore its

The Baroque cathedral, built in the16th century, is located on the north side of the square. Thearea has a temperate climate although evenings canbecome chilly between November and February.

Located 11 km northwest of San Cristbal is San JuanChamula. The Chamulans are a fiercely independentgroup with some unique religious practices. The spiritualcentre of this town is its enchanting church, dedicated toSt John the Baptist, which is certainly an interestingexperience: full of flickering candles and clouds of

incense, Local people worship and chant whilst sitting ona pine-needle-carpeted floor.

The steep-walled Sumidero Canyon is an impressive sight,

positioned just east of Tuxtla Gutirrez, where the principalairport is located (flights from Mexico City, Oaxaca, andMrida). In 1981, a hydro-electric dam was completed at itsnorthern end, damming the wild River Grijalva which flowsthrough the 800m deep canyon. The best way to enjoySumidero is by boat, travelling between the towering rockwalls. Along the way it is possible to observe a variety ofbirds herons, vultures, kingfishers and also crocodiles.

    Mexico Chiapas Palenque

Chiapas PalenqueThis jungle-enshrouded site is arguably the most romantic and magical of all the ancient Mayan cities. Its exquisite architecture is set amid dense green jungle. The site requires a regular workforce, armed withmachetes, to protect it from the constantly encroaching jungle. The awesome but graceful pyramids arecrowned with temples that glow in the tropical sun. Small rivers criss-cross the site, and there are trailsthrough unexcavated sections of the 4,400 acre reserve.

After AD 900, Palenque was largely abandoned. In an areathat receives the heaviest rainfall in Mexico, the ruins soonbecame overgrown. The city remained unknown to the

Western world until 1746, when Mayan hunters revealedthe existence of this jungle palace. Under leaders such asPakal the Great and his oldest son and successor, ChanBahlum, Palenque joined Calakmul, Tikal, and Copn asone of the most influential kingdoms of the lowland Maya.

The ruins and surrounding forest form a national parkwhich is also home to howler monkeys, snakes, lizards, toucans and ocelots.

The town of Palenque is not particularly attractive. Thereare simple rustic restaurants, banks and internet cafes. The hotels in Palenque are rustic and normally groupvisitor orientated, but they are adequate for an overnightstop before proceeding to the Yucatn peninsula.

    Mexico Yucatn Peninsula

    38 Sunvil Traveller

Yucatn PeninsulaThe Yucatn peninsula is a region without visible lakes or rivers, yet it is covered in tropical forest.Rainwater filters through the porous subterranean limestone shelf to create an extensive undergroundriver system. There are a considerable number of sinkholes or cenotes which form when a layer oflimestone collapses to reveal a deep green lagoon.

The peninsula has varied and unusual cuisine, especiallyin Mrida, where French, Spanish and Lebaneseimmigrants have had a strong influence. Locally-grownsour oranges are the key to marinated poc chuc, savoury

pork grilled with onions, tomatoes and garlic.

Each of the peninsulas three states Quintana Roo,Campeche and Yucatn - boasts numerous archaeologicalsites shrouded in jungle. Chichn Itz remains one of themost visited sites in Central America, with Mesoamericaslargest ball court and towering pyramids covered incarvings; it is extremely busy all year round with visits bylarge groups from Cancn. It is the palm-fringed beachesand turquoise waters that attract visitors in their droves to

Tulum rather than the actual quality of the site. Cob is amuch more interesting place, located between Tulum andChichn Itz.

Uxmal is also certainly worth a visit with fascinating, well-preserved structures covering its peaceful and extensive site.

Once dedicated to corn and cattle, and later to sugarcaneand then sisal fibre, many of the the peninsulas grandhaciendas have been reinstated to their former grandeurand transformed into luxurious, although expensive, hotels. The regions principal airports are Cancn, Mridaand Campeche.

It has four stairways with a total of 365 steps, corresponding with the number of days in the solarcalendar. Scholars once thought that Castillo was evidenceof a Toltec invasion (the Toltecs having migrated from the

central highlands capital of Tula, north of M exico city). However, most now agree that the Maya in fact influencedthe Toltecs.

Murals and stelae (carved stone pillars) depict warriors, battles and human sacrifice, which belie the long-heldimage of the Maya as pacifists. There are over 30reconstructed buildings, whilst hundreds more liecrumbling in the surrounding jungle. The site also features

a ball court, the largest and most impressive in Mexico, and a sacrificial sinkhole cenote. Chichn Itz sprawlsover more than 39 square miles, of which only about 3 sq miles may be visited. There is a sound-and-light show

The site is normally extremely busy, with large visitorgroups travelling from Cancn. Depending on yourplanned itinerary, we recommend that you stay overnightin a hotel by the ruins and enter the site early to avoid thecrowds. In July 2007, a non-profit foundation named Chichn Itz as one of the Seven New Wonders of theWorld. It is one of Mexicos top archaeological sites, and its glorious stepped Castillo pyramid (alsoknown as Kukulkan plumed serpent) was constructed during the Terminal Classic or EarlyPostclassic period (A.D. 900-1200).

    Copper Canyon

Whilst it is possible to simply ride the train all the waythrough and then stop overnight before returning, we

recommend the best way to experience the Copper Canyonis to make a few stops along the way and really soak up thescenery. Interesting places to overnight include Creel,Cerocahui, Urique, Posada Barrancas and Divisaderoallowing you 24 hours before the next train passes byagain. There are two services first class which makesfewer stops providing a restaurant, bar and reclining seatsand the cheaper and slower economy service which hasfood provided by vendors as well as a snack bar. It takes 14hours to make the one-way trip on the first class train (twohours longer on the economy service).

The periods of October to November and March to Aprilhave the most moderate temperatures (although thetemperatures at the foot of the canyon will still be hot).

July to September is the rainy season, when typically thereare thunder showers in the afternoon. A particularly good

time to visit is after the summer rains, in late Septemberand October, when the rivers are flowing and the flowersabundant. Things dry up from February to June, but it isstill possible to glimpse some wildflowers.

April to June are the hottest and driest months. Snow canfall between December and February.

Hotels in this region are quite simple and service levelscan be somewhat erratic. English is not widely spoken. Please note that the region tends to attract large groupsparticularly from North America. The principal airports areLos Mochis and Chihuahua which both have daily flightsto Mexico City which take approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.
