Excellent LocationWith a mild, temperate Atlantic climate, where temperature variations are lessened in the softness of the seasons, Maia is a world of emotions worth discovering!

Its excellent location, with magnificent motorways and main roads in the Northwest Peninsula, a fast and comfortable metro system, and an airport considered to be one of the best in Europe makes it a destination par excellence.

Made up of 10 parishes, 140,000 inhabitants, and an area of 82 km2, Maia can be considered the centre of the greater metropolitan area of Porto, in northern Portugal, and a legacy of its grand history.

Located in the greater metropolitan area of Porto, in northern Portugal. A pluri-millennial land closely linked to the founding of the nation. Important figures of our history passed through here. With a one-of-a-kind heritage full of monuments and museums not to be missed out on, compelling works by the greatest archi-tects in the country, and the authentic flavours of a cuisine that combines tradition with elegance. Maia is a great destination for business or leisure. You can revel in the green areas and enjoy true moments of pleasure in one of its numerous cultural events. Do not miss out on healthy outdoor sports either. And if you still have time left over, take advantage of the night and follow your senses ...

Welcome!

The Mayor of Maia,António Gonçalves Bragança Fernandes

One-of-a-kind heritageA pluri-millennial land that once stretched from the Douro River to the Ave River, with Gallaeci tribes settling here, occupying the forts high on the hills, and, later, the Romans, who developed important villages, roads, and built a necropolis.

This land is closely linked to the founding of the nation that saw the birth of two important men who, allied to D. Afonso Henriques, were important for the creation of Portugal: D. Gonçalo Mendes da Maia and D. Paio, Archbishop of Braga.

Other important figures related to nineteenth-century literature have also passed through here, specifically the secular property of Quinta do Mosteiro: Eça de Queirós, Antero de Quental and Oliveira Martins.

With its one-of-a-kind heritage, especially the Romanesque Gothic Church of Águas Santas, the seventeenth century conventual church S. Salvador de Moreira, and the remarkable frescoes of the Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe Chapel.

Don’t miss out on the Municipal Museum, located in Castêlo da Maia, a renovated building which gives soul to the old City Hall, and the Quinta da Gruta environmental school (next to the Museum), which is a must-visit.

Along with the increasing urban and entrepreneurial development, take in glimpses of the real rural world, where the relationship between man, the land, and Nature is preserved almost untouched in an attractive web of contrasts.

Compelling worksPast and present come together into a new dimension. Looking towards the future, Maia projects the great names of modern Portuguese architecture, immortalised in some of the city’s compelling works.

Great figures such as Siza Vieira, Souto Moura, Álvaro Rocha or Alfredo Ascensão, from the famous Porto School, have shaped 21st-Century Maia.

Authentic flavoursWell-known for the prestige of its restaurants, many owe their fame to Maia having been a county of farmers supplying fresh produce to the old Porto metropolis in days gone by, leaving behind a rich gastronomy made up of ancestral wisdom and flavours grounded in high quality raw material.

It is in these authentic gastronomic temples that you can taste various specialities “where you eat and beg for more”, especially its rich desserts of conventual origin.

By perpetuating products, techniques and ancient flavours, Maia still produces a Vinho Verde, unique in the world, and which in the 18th century already had enthusiastic admirers, being exported to the rest of Europe.

Timeless objectsThe creative capacity of the people of this land is well conveyed in the richness of their craft, much of it a secular tradition.

The best-known example is the “Santeiros” Maia religious statue manufacturers, imaginative artists in wood, as well as flax work, evident since the 18th century, embroidery, ceramics, cosmetics, and leather work.

You can find some of these timeless objects at the Tourist Office (MAIA WELCOME CENTRE) or at the home of any of our craftsmen.

Whether in one of our traditional stores or one of those modern large shopping areas, what really matters is that you can take a piece of us with you.

Moments of pleasureCultural activity in Maia is constant. From small to major events, culture thrives: Music Festival (May), Theatre Festival (October), the Symposium of Sculpture or the constant congresses set the rhythm. Musical shows, theatre and exhibitions of all kinds and for all audiences are held throughout the year.

The contrast between urban and rural life allows unforgettable experiences, such as a typical procession in Maia. The solemn canopy, the multi-coloured floats, the merry angels, baskets of flowers, devotion, are still genuine. The adornments, bands playing music in bandstands, the richness of folk exhibitions, the public sale of gifts, strew colour, music and joy all around.

Do not miss out on the most international of comedy theatre festivals in Europe, one of the most important and busiest Craft Fairs in Portugal, and not forgetting the magnificent Feasts and Pilgrimages, Music Festival or the World Press Photo exhibition.

Be surprised with true moments of pleasure...

Outdoor SportsNature is present in Maia and calls to all practitioners of outdoor activities. Whether by land (MTB, Off Road, Horse-riding, Tennis, among many others), in the air (Skydiving, Touristic Flights, Flight Baptisms), or in the water, swimming and diving in our pools; Maia has it all for you!

Follow the trail to our places, clubs and other locations to take part in physical and sports activities.

Maia is known as a sports-oriented city, not only because of the number of practitioners and diversity of sports practised, but also because of the many excellent sporting facilities available. So don’t miss out on some of the major international sporting events that are held every year in Maia.
