WHAT WAS IT?The history of Mumbai recounts the
growth of a collection of seven islands
on the west coast of India, becoming
the commercial capital of the nation,
and one of the most populous cities in
WKH�ZRUOG��2Q����$XJXVW�������ÀQDOO\�India was declared independent. The
last British troops to leave India, the
First Battalion of the Somerset Light
Infantry, passed through the arcade of
the Gateway of India in Bombay on 28
February 1948, ending the 282 year
long period of the British in Bombay .
WHAT’S SO SPECIAL?The architecture of Mumbai blends
Gothic, Victorian, Art Deco, Indo-Sar-
acenic and contemporary architectural
styles. Many buildings, structures and
historical monuments remain from
the colonial era. Mumbai, after Mi-
ami, has the second largest number of
Art Deco buildings in the world. The
variety spans everything from hotels,
