THE MEANING OF OUR BAPTISM Lent is the time of year that we devote to scrutinizing our lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. Today’s readings are a nice short-hand catechism of what our bap-tized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to
a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. The psalm reminds us that if we truly keep the covenant, the way of life God expects us to follow will not be a burden, but a source of love and truth. Peter’s letter gives one explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal that we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words that Jesus pro-claims immediately following his temptation show us the way: “Repent and believe in the gospel.” It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived in our baptismal promises.

The women's silent retreat at the Sacred Heart Retreat House in Alhambra will be March 13-15. The theme is "Lord, I Was Born For You" (St. Teresa of Avila) and celebrates Pope Francis's call to 2015 as the year of Con-secrated Life. The Carmelite Sisters have a
special weekend planned for us. Consider coming as a Commuter! We are blessed to live so close to the Retreat House. If you have home obligations for the evening, you can still do this! Say Amen! You can attend as "Saturday Only" and benefit from Conferences, meals, time for Confession and Mass and time for reflection in the gar-dens. You can attend as a "Full Weekend Commuter" (attend Friday eve-ning, including dinner and Conference, all day Saturday, including 3 meals and 3 Conferences, and Sunday morning, including breakfast, Confer-ence, and Mass). We do have a limited number of overnight bedrooms, of course. Our retreat master will be Rev. Gary Sumpter. Father Gary is a native Californian who has served in parishes in northern California, as well in the diocese of Spokane, Washington. He is a life-long student of St. Thomas Aquinas, and is currently working on a book of the lives of the saints for each day of the year. The retreat includes five conferences given by Father Gary, time to reflect and pray in the restful gardens or read in the well-stocked li-brary. There will be Holy Mass, Morning & Evening Prayer, and Eucharis-tic Adoration. Reservations are open through February 20. Call Lorraine Kiewiet at (626) 798-0824 or email at [email protected]. Or personally contact Cynthia Mitchell at St. Elizabeth's or Maria Bar-rios at Sacred Heart. May God reward you!

The Soup Suppers are being hosted by the following parish groups - February 27 - The Music Ministries; March 6 - The Ladies of Columbus; March 13 - St. Elizabeth School PTO; March 27- Ma-ranatha Prayer Group There will be no Soup Supper on March 20. LENTEN REGULATIONS The disciplines of fasting and abstinence are very old practices rooted in the Scrip-tures. Many non-Christian religions (e.g. Muslims and Buddhists) also observe forms of fasting and abstinence. Regulations re-garding fasting and abstinence are an invita-tion to us to enter into a spirit of simplicity and humility and of being in solidarity with the poor. All our Lenten practices need to be
guided by these principles. Abstinence: Abstaining from meat (beef, pork, goat, and poultry) is to be observed Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday. Abstinence is obligatory for healthy persons age 14-60. [Expensive seafood/shellfish are a violation of the spirit of the law.] Fasting: Healthy persons age 18-60 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednes-day and Good Friday. Fasting means eating one basic full meatless meal in the day with the two remaining meals being very simple [an old formula that many find helpful says that the amount of the two simple meals should not be more than the one main meal]. For those younger than 18 or older than 60 the spirit of fasting should be ob-served.

INTENTION / INTENCIONES
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Fasting may be a priority in your Lenten spring‑cleaning
regimen. Almost every religious tradition recognizes that
fasting is a key to heightened spiritual awareness. You know
this from your own experience. When you are engaged in a
hobby, painting a room, keeping vigil near a delivery room, or
standing watch at a sickbed, you may simply forget to eat.
What you are doing so fills you that the intensity of the ac-
tion is itself nourishing. In fasting from food, or drink, or ha-
bitual behaviors, you make room for what is truly important.
Even though Lenten Sundays stand apart from the Lenten
fast, you will notice traces of fasting in our liturgy. We fast
from singing the Gloria and Alleluia, we fast from flowers be-
decking the altar, and there may be a noticeable drop in the
number of infant baptisms as parents elect to wait until
Easter. This hints that fasting is a prelude to feasting, and
the vigor of our Easter alleluias is rich fare after a long si-
lence. In the same way, even a small fast—no cream in the
coffee, no pepper in the soup, no radio in the car—can not only
point to deeper hungers, but help us rejoice more fully in the
feast when we break our fast together. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
