HELP TO DECK OUR HALLS!

Help to Deck Our Halls!

As we prepare for Christmas, we are mak-

ing plans to decorate our lovely church,

chapel, and immediate environment. We

are asking for two types of donations–

monetary donations and live poinsettias.

If you would like to make a monetary dona-

tion, please take a small, red or green envelope from one of the

holders below the Bulletin racks, place your donation (cash or

check made payable to St. Elizabeth Church), and then deposit

it in the collection basket during mass. Any amount, no matter

how small is appreciated, because it all adds up to a lovely sum.

If you would like to donate a live poinsettia plant, we en-

courage all colors–from white to coral to red–and all sizes. All

will be used to create a festive holiday environment.

We will be outside of church this weekend, to receive your

donations. They can also be dropped off at the Parish Center

during the week. We thank you for your generosity.

EXILE Both Isaiah and Peter had the

task of comforting and encouraging

their communities during times of

exile. The Israelites were in geo-

graphic exile from Israel; to them

this was, in effect, the same as being

in exile from their God. The early

Christians, following the Resurrec-

tion, expected an immediate return of Christ in glory;

they, too, felt in “exile” as the delay of the Second Com-

ing grew longer and longer. All four of scripture’s authors

today—Isaiah, the psalmist, Peter, and Mark—hasten to

help us see things in God’s terms, not ours. They want us

to know that we can never truly be exiled from God, or

from God-among-us, since we know that when the faith-

ful are gathered, Christ has come into their midst. Instead,

we are encouraged today to do what we can from our end

to shorten the time of our exile: to repent of our sins, to

return our lives to the Lord, to live as people who seek the

coming day of the Lord, when “kindness and truth shall

meet; justice and peace shall kiss” (Psalm 85:10).

[84]:11).

Dear St. Elizabeth Parish Family, Thanks to all or you who took the time to answer the surveys and a special thanks to those who at-tended and participated in the Town Hall meeting on October 15th. We received 441 completed surveys- 231 in English, and 210 in Spanish. In both popula-tions, the priests and deacons, homilies and friendly parishioners were the top things parishioners liked about our parish. The choirs also received a very positive response. Both groups named more activities for youth as something they would like to see happen. The other responses varied and we are looking at them along with suggestions from the Town Hall groups to de-velop our priorities for the coming year. Your input is a powerful contribution to our community and we will keep you abreast of our progress. Thanks to all the Pastoral Council members: Alicia Huizar, Chuy Macias, Deacon Doug Cremer, Gina Robles, Julie Manning, Kelly Puga, Phil Hoff-man and Theresa Taylor for all their efforts to make the survey/Town Hall process a success. Special thanks to Pastoral Council member Lee Ann Fleming for all her work in researching and putting together the survey as well as using her computer skills to record and analyze the results statistically. Sincerely, Fr. Modesto Perez Pam Larson, Pastoral Council Chairperson

REST IN PEACE / DESCANSE EN PAZ We commend to God’s great mercy the soul of MARY PADDEN, a long time parishioner. Her Funeral Mass is going to be celebrated here at St. Elizabeth this Wednes-day, December 10th at 11:00am. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed

rest in peace. May Jesus, the Good Shepherd, comfort her Family.

UNWRINKLED To keep the heart unwrinkled, to be hopeful,

kindly, cheerful, Reverent, that is the triumph over old age.

—Thomas Bailey Aldrich

SIN ARRUGAS No dejar que el corazón se arrugue,

tener esperanzas, ser amable, alegre, reverente:

esa es la manera de vencer la vejez.

Mother Theodore Williams (1868-1931) and the Francis-

can Handmaids of the Most Pure Heart of Mary

“Isn't she lovely, isn't she wonderful?!” the words of Ste-

vie Wonder's song about his baby daughter perfectly describe

this beautiful daughter of God, who gave her life “to serve . . .

with the same care, diligence, zeal and love as Our Blessed

Lady served her Divine Son.”

Did you ever think that your daughter, sister, or friend

might be called to this beautiful life of service? Have you

ever seen a Black nun? Many would be surprised to know

there have been African American women serving the Church

and community in our country since 1829.

Born Elizabeth Barbara Williams in Baton Rouge, Louisi-

ana, the eldest of nine children in a devout Catholic family,

she pursued religious life with zeal, entering a convent of the

Sisters of the Holy Family when she was 19.

After serving in this contemplative order for 25 years until

it was disbanded by the bishop on the death of the Mother

Superior, she and French missionary Father Ignatius Lissner

in 1916 founded a teaching and social service order, the

Handmaids of the Most Pure Heart of Mary. They began in

Savannah, Georgia, but in 1923 moved to Harlem, New York,

and opened St. Benedict Day Nursery, which still serves the

children of working parents today.

As Third Order Franciscans, the Handmaids overcame the

prejudices of some who thought Black women could not be

suitable Catholic nuns. With love and care for the whole per-

son, physically, educationally, spiritually, and emotionally,

they taught preschool and elementary children, begged for

food to operate soup kitchens, cared for the elderly, and took

in laundry to support their work. After a life of service to the

poor and constant dependence on the Lord for guidance and

support, Mother Theodore, at the age of 63, died of pneumo-

nia on what is now the feast of our native American saint,

Kateri Tekakwitha, 14 July 1931. We can celebrate both

these beautiful women on that date, and encourage others to

follow in their footsteps. Read more about Mother Theodore

and the Handmaids online at franciscanhandmaidsof-

mary.org/history, and in African Saints, African Stories: 40

Holy Men and Women, by Camille Lewis Brown, Ph.D, St.

Anthony Messenger Press, 2008.

INTENTION / INTENCIONES

HUMAN RIGHTS

Necessity is the plea for every infringement on

human rights. It is the argument of tyrants. —William Pitt the Younger

DID YOU KNOW? Santa Safety Here are some simple guidelines for parents, guardians, and grand-parents to employ to make sure that children have a safe and happy visit with Santa’s helper: When your child is with Santa’s helper, consider encouraging him or her to stand next to Santa or sit on the floor be-tween his feet rather than sitting on his lap. Let your child know that it’s okay to tell Santa what he or she wants for Christmas but that he or she should also tell mom and dad because they are also Santa’s helpers… Secret surprises are special but no adult should ask a child to keep se-crets from the child’s parents. Make sure that the Santa visit is out in the open—or make sure that parents, guardians, and grandparents are in-cluded in the interaction.
