Samo administrators have worked to streamline the school tardy policy, while a revised detain system is still in the works, according to H-House Principal Leslie Wells.

According to I-House Principal Renée Semik, students will no longer receive detentions for their !"#$%&'(%)*+#$%#&,(*-).

“The new process streamlines this, freeing up advisers to spend more time on other things, not just focus on those students who have increased tardiness,” Wells said. “We want to see advisers be able to actually meet with students and counsel them, not waste time giving consequences that don’t seem to have the desired effect on changing the behavior of coming to class late.”

According to Kurtenbach, Samo is moving toward Saturday School sessions because they have been shown to be more effective than detentions.

“There were changes seen to students’ choices once they had earned Saturday School,” Kurtenbach said. “Given the time advisers were putting into

running tardy reports, writing tardy detention notices and running detention and the overall lack of effectiveness of those efforts, we decided to make an adjustment to the consequences.”

According to Wells, the administration is also trying to change their policy on detains.

“If a student chooses to be detained by a teacher, he/she is running the risk of getting a tardy,” Wells said. “Only the

house principals can validate a teacher’s detain and prevent it from becoming a tardy. If students start getting tardies because they stay behind with a teacher, they might think twice about whether or not they really need to stay.”

Wells said that administrators saw an increase in the number of

detains this year.“There are times when it

is appropriate for a student to be detained, but the decision on whether or not that is true should rest with administrators,” Wells said. “When students realize that #$-/%'--(%#0%#&1-%#$&#%-+#,&%)#-2%#0%30%#0%&%$04)-%0"!5-%*'%#$-%$02-)%0" %getting a detain that doesn’t result in a tardy, they will be less likely to remain behind in a teacher’s classroom.”

According to Wells, the new tardy policy has not yet been 0"!5*&66/% &''04'5-(% #0% #$-% )#4(-'#%body.

“Policies change all the time [and] we do not always remember to republish them during the school year, but policies are always published in the Binder Reminder,”

Wells said. “We do often ask teachers to tell their homeroom students about policy changes. For some, we also call home and notify parents of the changes, too.”

Sydney Krasny (’15) said the new stance on detains is unfair to students.

“I think detains should be permitted,” Krasny said. “Detains &6607% "0,% #-&5$-,)% #0% -+#-'(% #*8-%with students as long as they believe it’s necessary. Going through administration only makes students later to class.”

However, Mahmoud Hamza (’13) said that he understands that a change in the policy is needed.

“I believe that for the most part, our teachers do a great job of maintaining [detains],” Hamza said. “If teachers have voiced concerns, then yes, I understand the need in change of the policy.”

Wells believes that the change *'% #$-% 206*5/% *)% "0,% #$-% )06-% 9-'-!#%of students.

“Ultimately, we want students to be in class,” Wells said. “Arriving late to class may prevent a student from learning something that will come up on an assessment later on.”

Board member and previous BOE President Ben Allen said that Lieberman and Leon-Vazquez are prepared to step into their leadership roles.

“I’m sure both of them will do a great job,” Allen said. “I’ve worked really closely with Laurie and I think she’s ready to take on her new role, and I know she’ll do a good job in it.”

Lieberman and Leon-Vazquez want to engage more people in the topic of education during their terms.

“We hope to have some town council meetings and large discussions, similar to what the city of Santa Monica has when they’re proposing any changes,” Leon-Vazquez said.

Leon-Vazquez said she will do her best to improve the district through her role as vice-president.

“We’re a great district and we can make it an even greater district,” Leon-Vazquez said. “We hope to do that by looking at the programs that we offer and making sure that we respond to the needs of our community and our kids.”

In the weeks following the Newtown, Connecticut massacre, which claimed the lives of 20 )#4(-'#)% &'(% )*+% "&546#/% 8-89-,)%at Sandy Hook Elementary School, schools across the country have been reevaluating and heightening their security and safety procedures. According to Connecticut governor Danell Malloy, the school’s principal, Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, had updated the school’s security system earlier that year.

Within hours of the shooting, Principal Laurel Fretz and Santa ;0'*5&<;&6*94% ='*!-(% :5$006%District (SMMUSD) Superintendent Sandra Lyon issued letters and phone messages to all SMMUSD families. Their letters ensured parents about the district’s intensive security systems

Samo students Ryan Tepper (’13) and Julian Mickelson (’13), both members of the Samohi Solar Alliance (SSA), are competing in the 2013 Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge.

According to the Siemens website, the competition is an environmental sustainability challenge for K-12 students that gives them the means to better their schools and communities.

In April 2012, Santa Monica won the Siemens Sustainable Midsize Community Award for the Sustainable City Plan (SCP), which incorporates many different green programs, such as the Bicycle Action Plan, Buy Local and the Green Business Ordinance. The challenge and award are both hosted

by the same organization.Siemens contestants are given

the opportunity to harness modern technologies and ideas to help better their schools and communities.

Tepper said that he is doing the project partly for the $50,000 scholarship offered. Tepper is the main group leader for the education division of SSA, and actively participates in helping to solve environmental issues.

“Our idea is to make something that harnesses vibration energy,” Tepper said. “We want to take a machine that converts the vibrations of a car going over the road into electricity.”

Mickelson said that Tepper told him about the program, and that the two came across their idea while reading an article about transmitting electricity through concrete.

According to the Siemens website, the competition allows students to learn more about the environment, while competing for a large scholarship.

Before you mindlessly pocket the 21 cents left over from your vanilla latte purchase, consider the impact some loose change could have on another person’s life.

Samo student Justin Sardo (’14) recently formed Pocket Change, a club that collects students’ and teachers’ change, and once a month donates it to a different organization or charity.

“If everybody at Samo donated a quarter a month, we could raise about $800 a month for a charity and for or-ganizations that can use that money,” Sardo said. “So we need to utilize that, and even if people just donate a couple of quarters or something like that to compensate for other people, it should !"#"$%&'&()%&)* &+")+(",&-)&./&01"'&2'3&that people could easily donate their change into some sort of box.”

Sardo and a few friends have placed donation boxes in each of the 4)53"&)*$6"3,&74"&!)8"3&4'9"&'#&0#106'-tion of what charity the money will be donated to that month — every month, the subject of the donations changes. 7403& .)#%4:& *);& "8'.+(":& %4"& .)#-ey will be donated to the Ocean Park Community Center (OPCC).

“I really hope that people can get involved, and are willing to offer up a couple of cents, a dime or just a nickel or a quarter as they’re walking by,” Sar-do said. “I don’t think enough people

are involved in charity because it kind of seems like a distant thing.”

Sardo was inspired to start Pocket Change after hearing about an orga-nization that a friend of his at Boston University started.

“His idea was basically that every-body in his college donated a quarter '& .)#%4:<& -';1)& 3'01,& =74";"& 2";"&about 16,000 students so that would be about $4,000 a month for charity. It just seemed like it was such a simple thing. I myself, have never really thought much of coins, it’s change that you have in your pocket; you don’t think you can do much with it.”

Sardo has already gotten other stu-dents involved with the Pocket Change project.

Ryan Roberts (’14) credits his par-ticipation in Pocket Change to Sardo’s passion regarding making charity acces-sible to Samo.

“Justin came to me one weekend overcome with excitement,” Roberts said. “He explained the basic idea, and from there the whole thing grew into the club that exists today.”

?064)(3)#&03&4)+"*5(&*);&%4"&+;)@-ect’s success.

“I think it’s a very different type

Pocket Change club adviser Chon Lee said he’s known Sardo for a while and thinks that he will guide Pocket Change in a good direction.

“I knew that as a leader, as a pres-ident, [Sardo] would guide this club in the right direction, because I usually don’t take on many or any clubs that I don’t believe in,” Lee said.

Roberts believes that, with the help of some publicity, Samo students will become aware of Pocket Change and realize how easy it is to make a dif-ference.

“Once the students start donating, the potential of Pocket Change is lim-itless,” Roberts said. “I think we really can make a difference in the communi-ty if Samo is willing to participate.”

Sardo only has one more year at Samo, but he still has goals for the future of Pocket Change.

“Hopefully, if time permits, I’d like to possibly expand to other schools and have other kids institute similar things,” Sardo said. “I think it can be [expand-ed to] all district schools and it’s an easy thing to implement.”

Let me order steak: the vegetarian trio

[email protected]

In restaurants and cafés across the nation there is a quiet murmur of people of all ages, politely turning down offerings of chicken as they smile and proudly say, “I’m a vegetarian.” With a dignified superiority, they continue to grin as they digest their leafy meals — leaving me staring down at my plate piled high with carcasses of adorable animals.

I am going to feel guilty about eating meat no matter what; it’s only natural to feel bad for

animals. But unlike vegetarians, all hesitation disappears when I take the first bite. Not to mention, meat has tons of nutritional value, and humans eating meat is just part of the food-chain.

The first point I should make, is to remind everyone that I respect vegetarians for the self-control, self-restraint and determination it takes to order a tofu dish instead of a steak. But when I go out to eat with vegetarian friends, I usually get varied attitudes toward my choice to eat meat.

There are three reactions I typically get from vegetarians. The first reaction is that of the “Class Act.” The vegetarian enjoys her meat-less meal, and truly does not care that I am enjoying chicken or steak across the table from her. The “Class-Act” pays the bill and leaves as if nothing was wrong. She is obviously confident in her choice for herself. We can draw a lovely parallel to the religious at this point. The “Class Act” is

like a dedicated individual who believes that spiritually, going to their house of worship and praying to God is the best for him/her. He/she accepts that others believe in different faiths. He/she does not glare at someone who mentions that they are Atheist. This brings me to the second type of vegetarian.

The “Quiet Judging One” is the second and most sneaky type. Without a single word that directly attacks my choice to eat meat, the “Quiet Judging One” manages to make me feel like a cold-hearted murderer. Every few minutes, her eyes drop down and linger on my plate of meat, briefly. She occasionally slips in a few references to how she’s lost weight because of her lifestyle change or how there is a new documentary about the cruelty of meat processing. The “Quiet Judging One” is dangerous because she makes it difficult to pinpoint the exact moments that she reminded you of your inferiority. Yet, one thing is for sure — by the time you throw in the tip, you want to worship the “Quiet Judging One” for having convinced you that she has the selflessness of Mother Teresa.

When I see people standing on the side of the road, holding signs plastered with such phrases as “Beware God’s Wrath” and/or “He Will Judge You For Your Sins” part of me wants to jump out and punch them for being

judgmental lunatics, but the other half of me holds my Unitarian Universalist beliefs — that everyone is entitled to their own spiritual ideas. In keeping with this religious metaphor, the third type of vegetarian, “The Vege-Converter” is the one who describes how the pig I’m eating was kept in a tiny crate all of its short life and force fed with tubes, suffering, so that it could become artificially plump and be sold off to some butcher for a hefty price. “The Vege-Converter’s” goal is to make you feel so bad about loving meat that you join the force of vegetarians who refuse to uphold the food chain. “The Vege-Converter” will rant about how eating meat is unethical, fattening and condemnation worthy.

Sometimes I just want to eat my food. So please, Samo vegetarians, don’t look down on us “abnormal” folk because we eat meat. Eating meat is only healthy and follows the path that was set by our cavemen ancestors. Not eating meat is denying our natural human instinct. And to all the non-vegetarians out there, take my suggestion and do not grab lunch or go out to dinner with types one or two of your vegetarian friends. Maybe instead you two should grab coffee or even better, you may have just found your new bowling buddy.

Staff Editorial:

Dear Teachers,We accept the fact that homework is an

essential element of the learning process. However, we refute the claim that all assigned homework is beneficial. A line must be drawn between homework that helps students learn new concepts and homework that simply bombards students with the same concept over and over. The system that exists at Samo is clearly not working, with widespread cheating on homework assignments and such a large number of parent complaints that the administration is considering creating a homework policy. There isn’t only an issue with the quantity of homework, but the quality as well.

Picture this, an average-day for above average Samo students. Students wake up at 6 a.m. for school and end school at 3:16 p.m. However, they have sports practice from 3:16 to 6 p.m. After that, they have to wait for a pickup and get home at roughly 6:30 p.m. They eat dinner and shower and it’s already 7:15 p.m. They then have to spend at least an hour practicing their instruments. It is now 8:15 p.m. They have two hours of homework. 10:15 p.m. and they haven’t had a chance to relax, and if they don’t go to bed soon, they will fall even more behind on the recommended nine hours of sleep.

However, as previously stated, the issue isn’t only with quantity but also with quality. What teachers need to realize is that students will work harder if they feel like they are doing work that will actually help them. For example, if students are given an assignment in which they need to color and label all 50 states in the U.S.A., the assignment is not beneficial for most.

For most non-visual learners, coloring is simply busy work. What that means is that it is going to take thirty or so minutes that they could be spending on a different subject that they are not so keen at. While this assignment

does help some students, it is unfair for those who already know the 50 states or who are not nearly as susceptible to visual learning. Another more common example is when a math teacher assigns a student 20 math problems on the same concept. It can be very irritating for a student who has mastered graphing parabolas after the first seven problems to have to graph 13 more. While practice does make perfect, over-practice takes up too much time.

These long and unnecessary homework assignments also create an easy path for students to fall into a monotonous routine where they put little thought into homework. When students are constantly trying to rush through homework that is not helping them learn, they develop negative work habits where their goal is simply to finish their homework, not to turn in something of quality. Soon students begin thoughtlessly rushing through all assignments, not just the pointless ones.

However, we would also like to acknowledge that students contribute just as much as teachers do to the current homework problem at Samo. Many of us procrastinate and don’t put in the effort that most assignments deserve. Instead of working on an essay during the two week period it is given, many of us end up writing it the night before. This utter disregard of time management definitely plays a factor in the homework problem at Samo.

In order to fix this problem, both teachers and students need to reach a middle ground. Teachers have to be willing to re-evaluate the way they assign homework so that it is as beneficial and efficient as possible for students, and students need to be willing to take homework assignments more seriously and not blame their teachers for their sleepless nights.

Sincerely, !e Sta" of The Samohi

Sometimes homework is necessary; it genuinely reinforces what we’ve learned in class and helps us to prepare for a quiz/test that is probably worth a large chunk of our grade.
