Program NotesLULLABY FOR A STREET CHILD - Michael Aukofer recently completed his academic training in music through the doctoral level with honors. Michael spends the majority of his time now composing, teaching, producing and recording music, as well as working on the completion of his dissertation for the DMA from the University of Kentucky titled “Behind the Kit”. Michael’s original compositions have gained international attention in the past few years.
BIG COUNTRY - is a catchy and inspired composition by world renowned banjo picker and jazz musician Béla Fleck. Its simple melody encapsulates the folksy sound of Americana, and Olin Johannessen’s ar-rangement wonderfully captures this through his scoring for percussion ensemble. Fleck’s original banjo part transfers well to percussion ensemble. This arrangement features a small rhythm section to drive the two-step feel as well as basic marimba parts in addition to main marimbas for larger ensembles. This piece require a good level of technical proficiency from marimba and xylophone players. It requires a relaxed and smooth approach to the instrument. Johannessen states: “This piece is about making people feel good.” The Best Years of Our Lifes (Shrek) - by DAVID JAYMES and GEOFFREY DEANE is the Latin/Rock hit recorded by the Baha Men, from the wildly popular movie Shrek. With an infectious groove and catchy melodies, this is a must for any popular music concert. This exciting song has been arranged for concert (wind) band by Ted Ricketts and the music is of a grade 3 standard.
IMAGINE - A rich, sonorous setting of John Lennon’s timeless song of peace arranged for young band. Larry Norred’s careful attention to color and ensemble texture make this ballad an exquisite concert number.
THE SIMPSONS - Danny Elfman’s magnificant theme to the The Simpsons, edited by Paul Jennings for Concert Band, this arrangement of the popular, prime-time animated television progam brings big smiles to the audience and leave them screaming, “Cowabunga, Dude”!
MULAN - Music executive Chris Montan found a new song composer in Matthew Wilder, best known as the singer-composer for “Break My Stride” and a respected album producer. Wilder worked on a stage musical adaption of Anne Rice’s Cry To Heaven when Montan heard a demo of his music and asked Wilder to join the Mulan team. David Zippel, who worked with Alan Menken on Hercules, was tapped to write the lyrics.
TARZAN - Soundtrack Highlights - Another Disney animated film - an entertainment blockbuster, this time featuring the songs of Phil Collins. Paul Murtha’s showcase for band includes three of the best songs from the film. You’ll love the pop hooks with Two Worlds, Trashin’ the Camp, and You’ll Be In My Heart. Tarzan, Phil Collins’ memorable ballad, is still riding high on the pop charts.
THE INCREDIBLES - Michael Giacchino makes his feature film composing debut with “The Incredibles” Soundtrack. His credits include a wide range of music for television and interactive games such as the “Medal of Honor” and “Call of Duty”, plus the TV hit dramas “Alias” and “Lost.” “The Incredibles” Soundtrack features nineteen memorable tracks in a score that evokes the caper comedies and spy thrillers of the ‘60s with a fresh twist. You’ll hear screeches from saxophones and muted horns, fluttering flutes, bold heroic trumpet calls and thumping drumbeats. All parts were individually scored for Symphonic Concert Band.“When all is said and done, ‘The Incredibles’ is about real emotion. It’s about someone hugging and then something
exploding. I feel the score has come to mean the same thing to me.” -- Michael Giacchino THE SOUND OF MUSIC - Rodgers and Hammerstein changed the face of American musical theater by integrating the elements of drama, music and dance as never before. Their 17-year partnership began in 1943 with Oklahoma! and continued through ten other musicals, including The Sound of Music (1959). In all, the duo won 35 Tonys, 15 Oscars, two Grammys, two Pulitzers, and two Emmys. Robert Russell Bennett (1894-1981) was an arranger, composer, and conductor who orchestrated the scores of more than three hundred Broadway musicals over a period of four decades. His best-known work was with Richard Rodgers, for whom he orchestrated Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific , The King and I, and The Sound of Music, among others. Bennett’s astonishing method of orchestration was legendary. Watching a number two or three times in rehearsal, he scored it from memory, often turning out eighty pages of orchestrations a day. He occasionally had more than twenty shows running at the same time and almost never fewer than four per season.
OVER THE RAINBOW - “Over the Rainbow” (mistakenly known as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”) is a popular song with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg. It was written for the movie The Wizard of Oz, and it became Judy Garland’s signature song. The song is so popular that it tops the “Songs of the Century” list. The music is heavily inspired by the ‘Song to the Moon’ by Dvorak’s opera Rusalka. “Over the Rainbow” has come to epitomize the gesture of the rising octave, which makes its opening so distinctive. “No one wants to sing or play a melody that begins with an octave leap!” said an early critic. That melody that no one would sing or play is now probably the best known in the world. Warren Barker treats this scoring with care in a setting perfect for any concert occasion.
MY FAIR LADY - opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in 1956 and run 2,717 performances, - lasting more than nine years, perhaps the most popular musical of the 1950s. My Fair Lady came into being after producer Gabriel Pascal devoted the last two years of his life to finding writers who would adapt George Bernard Shaw’s 1914 play Pygmalion into a musical. The successful team of Alan Jay Lerner, lyricist and librettist, and composer Frederick Loewe produced My Fair Lady starring Julie Andrews as Eliza and Rex Harrison as Higgins. The winning combination of Shaw commentary, Lerner and Loewe musical genius, and Andrews and Harrison stage presence set box office records. America’s most famous, but least known musical figure Robert Russell Bennett - orchestrated Loewe’s music for My Fair Lady.
STAR WARS (Main Title) - John Williams’ Star Wars title theme has become one of the most well-known musical compositions in modern music history. Williams tapped into the audience-accessibility in the first lines of the original theme by using a familiar song from a popular Oscar winning movie soundtrack. Williams has widely maintained that his original theme is the theme song from Born Free played in reverse. He used this as a “subliminal hook” to capture his audience. Indeed, Lucas maintains much of the trilogy’s success relies not on advanced visual effects, but on the simple, direct emotional appeal of its plot, characters and, importantly, music. Williams’s revival of a technique called “leitmotif”, which is most famously associated with the operas of Wagner and, in film scores, with Steiner. A leitmotif is a phrase or melodic cell that signifies a character, place, plot element, mood, idea, relationship or other specific part of the film. It is commonly used in modern film scoring, as a device to mentally anchor certain parts of a film to the soundtrack. JUPITER from “The Planets” - Jupiter - The bringer of Jollity, brings abundance, perseverance.Gustav Theodore Holst (1874 – 1934) was an English composer and was a music teacher for over 20 years. Having studied at the Royal College of Music in London, his early work was influenced by Ravel, Grieg, Richard Strauss, but most of his music is highly original, with influences from Hindu spiritualism and English folk tunes. Holst’s music is well known for unconventional use of metre and haunting melodies. Holst and wife Isobel bought a cottage in Essex and here he started what was to become his best known work, the orchestral suite The Planets. It was meant to be a series of “mood pictures” rather than concretely connected with astrology or astronomy. The 19th-century astrologer Raphael, whose book concerning the planets’ role in world affairs led Holst to develop the grand vision of the planets that made The Planets suite such an enduring success.
HUAPANGO - Jose Moncayo was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and studied piano as a boy. He entered the Mexico City Conservatory where he continued his piano studies and studied composition with Carlos Chavez. Moncayo’s first professional job was as a percussionist with the Mexican State Symphony Orchestra. He later conducted the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico City from 1949-1952. He was invited to study with American composer Aaron Copland. As a member of a set of people nicknamed the “Group of Four,” Moncayo, along with composers, Galindo, Caontreras, and Ayalas, wrote music that reflected the nationalistic spirit of Mexico. Much of this music used melodies, rhythms, and harmonies drawn from the country’s folk music. Moncayo’s best-known work continues to be his colorful orchestral fantasy Huapango (1941), but his produc-tion also includes many other pieces of a high quality, notwithstanding their lesser fame. The huapango is the name of a Mexican musical style and the accompanying lively dance of Spanish origin that is especially popular in the lands along the Gulf of Mexico. Performed by singers and instrumental ensembles ranging from a duo of guitars to a full mariachi band, it is characterized by a complex rhythmic structure mixing duple and triple meters which reflect the intricate steps of the dance. The huapango is danced by men and women as couples; the men sing, the women do not.

Best Wishes, Dr. Ramirez, and Thanks!
Abel Saldivar Ramirez holds the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Wind Conducting from UCLA where he studied with Prof. Thomas Lee. He then became the Director of Bands, an Assistant Professor, and the Conductor of the California State University at Los Angeles Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and University Band.
The students of the Santa Monica High School Band Program consider them-selves fortunate to have had Dr. Ramirez instruct and inspire them for the past five years. He first entered our lives during Band Camp in August, 2003 bring-ing a special blend of disciplined marching mixed with his distinctive sense of

humor. Expanding his influence at SAMO, Dr. Ramirez soon shared his expertise by assisting Mr. Sakow to conduct several of the bands. In 2005, Dr. Abel Ramirez was invited to be the guest conductor of the Stairway to the Stars Concert and received a standing ovation from a packed Civic Center surpassed only by the applause from his SAMOHI students and parents.
All of us here at Santa Monica High School, whose lives he has touched by proving to us we could exceed our own expectations, would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Dr. Abel Ramirez. We wish him much success in his new position at the University of Illinois. Although we will miss him greatly, we know that wherever
