Samo’s curriculum will drastically change over the next two years as part of a national shift toward the Common Core Standards, which adjust the focus of school from content learning to application.

These new educational standards were proposed by the United States !"#$%&'(") (!*&+) (,-.-+(,%*""'(/)0(%+12(in 2010, and were adopted by 45 out of 50 states. The Common Core is now sweeping the nation, as states adopt the 2-.$3.132(-"(%1+.-+(#$&0(+3(%#11&%#'#45

According to the Common Core website, the Common Core Standards were drawn up to prepare students for 21st century learning, which involves less memorization and more application of knowledge.

“To deliver on the promise of common standards, the standards must address the problem of a curriculum that is ‘a mile wide and an inch deep,’” the website said.

The biggest changes will be seen in history and science classes at Samo. There are already plans for the history department at Samo, which will have students focus more on writing as a result of the Common Core Standards.

I-House Principal Renée Semik said that students can expect to see more Document Based Question (DBQ) essays in their history classes, which require students to develop a position on an issue and argue it after reading a historical document.

Social Studies Department Chair Amy Bisson said that the Common Core will be an extension of a past trend for Samo.

“In the past year we’ve already been trying to build in more writing into the curriculum,” Bisson said. “Hopefully there won’t be too many changes.”

Chemistry teacher Sarah Lipetz said that the when the common core standards are implemented, the main emphasis in science will be placed on reading and writing of academic texts

-"(+67'.&$(2%&+$-&0(%(7*+$"4+$.5English teachers at Samo also plan

on restructuring the way they teach their classes around the Common Core Standards.

“One of the things that you’re 8"&$8( -"( 2++( &2( .( '"-( ") ( $"$90(%-&"$(coming back into the English classrooms because the tests themselves and the Common Core Standards emphasize [the] idea that students need to be dealing with more real world information — understanding it, being able to write about it and synthesizing it,” English teacher Maria Stevens said.

Samo student Gilda Alez (’14) thinks that the Common Core changes will improve how students learn.

:;-( 0(12-<( 2=&-%*&$8( -*+( -+.%*&$8(focus might make learning harder for students, but once they get the hang of it, the Common Core Standards will probably help students better understand the material they are learning,” Alez said.

Samo curriculum to focus on writingSamo moves from STAR to computer-based testing model

Lack of computers for student use remains a concern among staff and administration, as plans for Samo’s shift from physical to computer-based state testing next year unfold.

The new test, called the Smarter Balanced Pilot Test, is )"14.--+3( -"( >+--+1( 0(-( 2-#3+$-2?(skills by adapting the test questions based on the students’ responses, according to Santa Monica-Malibu @$&0(+3(,%*""'(A&2-1&%-( B,CC@,AD(Director of Assessment, Research

and Evaluation Maureen Bradford.“Smarter Balanced will only

assess students in grades three through eight and grade eleven,” Bradford said. “Currently STAR assesses students in grades two through eleven. In terms of format, STAR relies strictly on multiple choice items, with the exception of a writing prompt in grades four and seven, while Smarter Balanced will have a variety of item types, including multiple choice, selected response, short answer and longer, performance-based items.”

According to Bradford, the tests will adapt to student responses .$3( 3+'&E+1( 4"1+( "1( '+22( 3&)0(%#'-(problems.

Samo student Celeste Bleiberg (’15) thinks that implementing the Smarter Balanced tests will have a positive effect on the district.

“I think that [computer-adaptive testing] is a good idea because everyone’s different and I feel like most tests ignore that,” Bleiberg said. “It would be nice to -.F+( -+2-2( -*.-(=+1+(4"1+( 27+%&0(%( -"(the individual.”

However, some are concerned about the shift toward computer-based testing, because according to Samo Information Technology (IT) Technician, Bill Gaidzik, there are only about 300 school computers accessible to students.

Most schools in the state of

California will have trouble with the new tests because of an unequal ratio of students to computers. According to H-House Principal Leslie Wells, Samo may need to extend the time allotted for testing and use both computer labs, the library and a number of classrooms with laptops for pilot testing in the spring of 2014.

Math teacher Ari Marken thinks that the Smarter Balanced tests are an improvement over STAR testing.

“I like the fact that students are going to have to explain their answers and show more understanding in written form, which is a useful skill anywhere,” Marken said. “Showing

math skills and showing how they reason through an answer is more important than arriving at the correct answer.”

The Smarter Balanced tests were already tested at a number of SMMUSD schools earlier in the year, including Juan Cabrillo Elementary School, Will Rogers Elementary School, John Adams Middle School (JAMS) and Santa Monica Alternative School House (SMASH).

According to Juan Cabrillo Elementary School Principal Pamela Herkner, although the lack of technology was a challenge, the testing was a success.

“We are fortunate to have the technology to allow us to implement the [Smarter Balanced] assessment to a whole grade level at one time,” Herkner said. “Preparation for the testing and implementation was 3+0($&-+'G(.(-+.4(+))"1-5H

The results have not been released to the district, but the experience of testing online was valuable, according to Bradford.

“The results of pilot tests will be used to determine the validity and reliability of test items as well as take stock of how well schools can manage testing large groups of students with limited resources for technology,” Bradford said. “That might be the greatest challenge of all.”

Teachers learned from each other in a series of workshops, entitled Samohi University, which took place in the History Building on Wednesday, April 24.

In past years, Samo held similar community building days, but due to budget constraints, Samo faculty was

forced to use only campus resources and decided on a mini-college day with two rounds of 23 workshops.

The result was a broad range of presentations, conducted by staff, faculty and students, that explored everything from classroom techniques to administrative assistance to personal sanity.

“While some sessions focused on physical well-being like stress management and yoga, the new component that [made] this Samohi University [was] a focus on sharing [the] best practices from our classrooms and experiences,” English Department Chair Jennifer Pust said.

Linda Gordon (’14), who led a workshop with the Human Rights Watch on human rights education, !"#$%&'#!%("!%&')%*+!&%&#,)%&'"&%!&-$).&!%

Gordon was happy with the collaboration Samohi University sparked between students and teachers.

“Teachers seemed extremely receptive to our ideas and happy to work together,” Gordon said.

Math Department Chair Marae Cruce said that Samo plans on continuing the Samohi University program in the future.

“The event ran rather smoothly,” Cruce said. “It was great to interact with colleagues and explore topics within our profession.”

Students may attend extra sessions to make-up for any absences or compensate for any lost time during special schedules like California State Testing (CST), Battung said.

But despite the class’ approval by the Board of Education, the class may not be available next year due to a sign-up shortage.

“More than one student has told me that their adviser doesn’t know that [Yoga II] is approved,” Battung said. “I fear that the communication chain has been broken, and Yoga II for 2013-14 might be lost in the process. If it has any chance, students need to talk to their advisers immediately.”

Logan Henderson (’13), David Leibman (’13), Max Myman (’13) and Ruhi Bhalla (’14) received Outstanding Regional Occupational Program (ROP) Student Recognitions for their work in their ROP classes.

Every year, ROP teachers select one student per class that has shown an outstanding worth ethic and has exceeded expectations for nomination in a county-wide competition. Bhalla showed these skills in Film & Video Production, Henderson in Business Management-Project Echo, Leibman in IIT Essentials and Myman in Photography Level II. These students move on to a county competition, which involves interviews and work presentations.

With Samo’s current principal !"#$ %&'($ &% $ )*+$ ,-.$ /&'+.$ 0()"1)0!2+$leaving their posts, there is no question that our school is headed for change. The only question is, what exactly is that change?

According to Santa Monica-3!2)4'$ 5"),.#$ 61/&&2$ 7)+*()1*$86335679$ 6'0.()"*."#."*$ 6!"#(!$Lyon, the administrative change is part of her new vision for the school district. The only problem is, she has yet to share concrete details on what that vision entails.

“As I developed my plan and vision for Samo and other schools, several administrators were given varied options for the ensuing school year,” Lyon wrote to the Santa Monica Mirror. “Some administrators have decided, instead, to embark on

different career paths and to seek other administrative and leadership opportunities as a result.”

There is a chance that the change our school will go through will not be major. However, the void in communication between Lyon and the school has pushed some people to jump to the worst conclusion about the direction Samo is headed.

It’s one thing to have one new administrative member come in, but to have almost a complete change of guard is concerning, to say the least. The new administrative members are competent and have remarkable credentials, but Samo will have an administration that for the most part has never led our school before. It is foolish to expect that anyone, even */.$:&+*$ ;'!2),.#$ 0.(+&"<$=&'2#$ 4.$able to walk into a new school and immediately be able to excel at their job, yet this reality is exacerbated by

the fact that these new administrators will have precious few peers to show them the inner workings of the school, since most of the previous administration will be gone.

Samo also has more administrators than a typical high school. This means that more people have to work together in order for the school to run smoothly.

It seems as though such an administrative shake-up would be reserved for schools with failing >1!#.:)1$ ?.(%&(:!"1.$ @"#.A$ 8>?@9$scores or massive cheating scandals. However, last year, Samo’s API score jumped 18 points from 805 to 823, so there seems to be no obvious reason behind why our school is going through the biggest administration change in recent years. Samo’s improvement was so drastic that it had the largest point jump out of any of its local peer institutions.

What is going on with Samo? However, some people are

welcoming the chance of change with open arms. They are hoping for a more smoothly run school with better communication.

The main issue we have is not the change, but that Lyon has not made it clear what her vision is. It is reasonable to see that there is well-placed concern at such a big transition. It is therefore even more reasonable to understand why parents, students and faculty have the right to know Lyon’s exact plans for the school. If we are to face new policies due to such drastic change in administration, we at least deserve to know what the new direction we are going in is.

Just as energy is never created nor lost, the existence of well-being is only shifted.”

Why Give?

Justin SardoContributor

Deciding to do charity work is, quite simply, abandoning the “why nots?” — those reasons that you, that we, all give as support for inaction. Everybody wants to make a difference. Few act on that desire.

Often, you will hear people asking that you put yourself in the shoes of someone in need — of someone struggling — yet that is not necessarily a realistic demand. For those of us with the opportunity to earn a great education, pursue what we want in life, with a warm, soft bed to sleep in at night and never a thought of hunger or thirst, how can we really understand what it is like to suffer? We can feel guilt, yet where does that get us? If someone less fortunate were to be put in our place, would they not want to treasure and hold fast to all that they would see as

luxury — that we take for granted? However, we do have the capacity to give. Realizing that capacity is to realize that we are all important —that we all have something to offer.

Just as energy is never created nor lost, the existence of well-being is only shifted. Somehow we have developed the misconception that those who have money are “above” those who do not; that they are more successful. But what is success? help — how many lives we change? Rather than focusing on making

a bigger, faster society, why not aim to foster one of happiness? Stranger in a Strange World

Although I miss my country, Pakistan, and family sometimes, I know I will never get this unique experience again, so I am making the most of it.”

Life is all about change. Every day we have to face changes in our daily routine. Being an exchange student has been a major change in my life.

The exchange student is one who is willing to accept adversity and challenges without his/her own family members, travel to a different place with a diverse group of people and cope with a strange environment. It’s really hard and one needs a plethora -. %*-:!)6"%)93%?"B+$+0+&41%>%)#%6-+96%through the same process these days. My name is Tahreem Hassan, and I am an exchange student from Pakistan, Karachi. I am living here in Santa Monica, Calif., with a great host family, and I am going to Santa Monica High School. I am here through YES (Youth Exchange and Study Program) sponsored by AFS (American Field Service). AFS programs are spread out with hundreds of fortunate students

from different parts of the world coming to the U.S., and a number of students from the U.S. going to different countries.

As I mentioned before, I come from Pakistan, a wonderful country with every resource and necessity of life. Pakistan is a land of 9)&:!)0% $"):&4C% /"% ')8"% ,8"% !+8"!(7%mountains, plateaus, valleys and the second highest peak of the world: K2. is taking place to make it a prosperous land. In fact, there are a number of talented people that will take it to the height of prosperity and development. It has been four months since I moved here and the exchange program has helped me remove misconceptions and learn about this country. In the beginning it was hard to adjust in a new environment with new people. Everything was really different: food, language, dresses, religion and customs, but I love everything that has been a change because as AFS says: “Nothing is better or worse, it’s just different.” I celebrated Halloween, Thanksgiving )93% E'!+(&#)(% .-!% &'"% ,!(&% &+#"(% +9%my life, and my time celebrating these events was remarkable. I got so much respect and love from the people here, so it just took two or three weeks for me to adjust completely. The

hardest part for me was schooling. Schools here are remarkably different from Pakistan. Studies are easier here, but Samo is colossal. In Pakistan I was a student in a private school with only 300 students, and here there are 3,000 students, so it’s a massive difference. In the beginning, making friends was hard, but I am so happy that I made (-% #)94% .!+"93(% -9% &'"% ,!(&% 3)4% -. %school. Also, things never are stagnant; they always change. So now my life is wonderful. Everything is so different: school, family and friends. Things are just the way I always wanted, a great family and a huge group of loving friends.

Although I miss my country, Pakistan, and family sometimes, I know I will never get this unique experience again, so I am making the most of it. Even though there’s so much diversity here in Santa Monica, I still believe that teenagers here should take part in exchange programs so like me they can open their eyes to a whole new world and hopefully create future leaders who are committed to world peace.

Rather than wasting your Saturday night babysitting or your afternoons slaving away at Jamba Juice, a handful of Samo students have come up with a more practical and time-saving manner of making money: selling clothes on Facebook.

Instead of dropping yet another bag off at Salvation Army, why not get rid of clothing and make money at the same time? Sure, maybe some of the pieces have been worn once or twice, but their peers are more than willing to sacrifi ce a tag for a fresh addition to their wardrobe.

Sintra Martins (’14) says that using a social network to sell to friends is more effective than listing it on eBay or taking it to a consignment store. Wanting to make some money, she posted pictures of her clothing on Facebook and hoped for the best. When students showed interest, the now standard procedure ensued. Students would comment on the pictures of the clothing they would be willing to buy and ask Martins to bring the piece(s) of clothing to school to either try it on or to pay for it and fi nish the transaction.

Though taking clothing to a consignment store achieves the same end result, using the Facebook tactic is much simpler. On Facebook, clothing sellers only interact with the people they want to. And because of their peers’ similar taste in style and clothing, they are likely to get many buyers.

Martins, who works at American Apparel, initially sold clothing to her coworkers. She soon realized that the students at Samo are better customers because of similar trends across campus. Facebook proved to be the perfect outlet, as most of us can’t spend 20 minutes away from the social-networking site. She has made approximately $100 selling clothes marked down almost 80 percent to anyone who shows interest. Though in the long run she lost money considering the original price she bought many of her for-sale clothing for, Martins gained money she may not have made at all if she hadn’t seen this option and decided to donate or throw away her old clothing instead.

As the trend grows, more and more students have different reasons for selling their clothes on Facebook. Daria Yaari (’15) said that part of the reason she started selling her clothes online was because so many people borrowed her clothes anyway.

“A lot of people tell me that they’re going to steal my clothes someday so I just thought that it was a nice gesture to sell them,” Yaari said.

Among those who know her, Yaari’s wardrobe is envied. Naturally, once other students discovered that she was selling her clothing, there was not a single article of clothing left neglected. One student even approached her about clothing she hadn’t put up for sale, hoping to buy it from her.

Tatiana Bedi (’14) also sold clothing on Facebook, but with a different goal in mind: she hoped to fund a portion of her choir trip to France. Bedi knew she needed to make money fast

and by getting the word out about the choir trip, she did just that. All of her items were sold within a single weekend, easily making the last $100 she needed of her $1000 contribution.

From the customer’s point of view, students are realizing that they can buy in-trend clothing for extremely low prices instead of spending twice as much elsewhere. Samo, however, is not the only school participating in this fad. Schools in the area such as Palisades, Venice and Marymount High Schools all have their own savvy clothes-sellers.

Palisades student Lucky Drageset (’16) has sold tank tops and dresses online as well, even to some Samo students. According to fellow Pali student Taylor Pecsok (’15), a lot of people have been selling and buying clothing from one another through Facebook and the act has considerably grown in popularity — it makes up a fourth of any Pali girl’s wardrobe.

The fact that the trend has branched out far beyond Samo is no surprise to avid customer and Samo student Nilou Sheikhpour (’14).

“It’s like online shopping,” Sheikhpour said. “It’s easy and fun and you’re helping a friend out while also paying cheaper prices and getting clothes the next day rather than fi ve business days.”

According to Pecsok, however, the effects of this trend branching out further and further could have a major impact. Popular stores like Urban Outfi tters and Brandy Melville are getting ripped off and losing customers as their clothing is recycled and drastically marked down from the usual price.

Could this even come back to eventually hurt Samo, as many of the stores whose clothing is being sold employ our student body?

Pacsun employee and Samo student Nora Winner (’13) is assured that this new hobby will have the opposite effect.

“I think it could have the potential to stimulate people purchasing more,” Winner said. “Trading stores such as Wasteland, Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange already do what Facebook is now going to do. They take what we don’t want, buy it from us and sell it, making a profi t. Now girls can do it directly instead of using the stores as a middle man. The reason why I say that it may actually might get girls to buy more from those stores is because they have the money to purchase new things.”

While this may seem to be a teenage act just to save some money, there is a professional side to what Samo students have stumbled upon: a new kind of business called “F-Commerce.” F-Commerce is the business term for what Samo kids are doing, just on a much larger scale.

F-Commerce is when people open actual storefronts through Facebook, similar to online stores. Just as students in Samo learned to utilize the popular social network, businesses did too. Many have realized the accessibility the Internet provides and are elaborating on the small but successful business transactions that have been occurring in high schools everywhere, turning a girl with an overfl owing wardrobe into a successful businesswoman.
