Mary rose and went in haste and greeted Elizabeth with the words, “My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior … God who is mighty has done great things for me.”

It seems appropriate in this special month dedicated to Mary to dwell on the words she spoke so beautifully and which are recorded in scripture. Actually, this is Mary’s only prayer in scripture – the famous words of the Magnificat. As we well know, it was Mary’s song of prayer at the time she visited her cousin, Elizabeth. But it is a prayer that could have been recited at each phase of her life. At the Annunciation and birth of Jesus, God, who is mighty, had done great things for her. Finding Jesus when lost in the temple and at the miracle at the wedding at Cana, Mary’s spirit rejoiced. Standing beneath the cross and at the time of the Resurrection, Mary could proclaim that holy is God’s name. But the fact is, the prayer was recorded as being said at the time of her visit to Elizabeth. To better understand the prayer, we need to ask an important question: What prompted Mary to speak these beautiful words after a tedious and tiring trip to visit her cousin? The answer is CARE!

We are bombarded with the promises of caring in our society today, sometimes genuine, sometimes insincere. “Call us; we care” advertisers boast. We hear about “tender, loving care” offered by others. Actually, we expect care and concern from everyone. But what is the quality of care given? In Mary’s story, it was a genuine care that prompted her visit, a care that went beyond the commercial promises and slogans. Mary knew it was good to be able to do something for a friend, for her cousin. It was good to reach out to another when Elizabeth needed her. Mary wanted to be present to Elizabeth, to bring joy to someone struggling through pregnancy in her older years. Because she cared, she stayed for a longer visit. Imagine their discussing what this astonishing event would mean to both of them in the years to come. Hear them laughing and crying as they shared their own excitement and fears. But in the end, we heard in her prayer that Mary cared enough to share the joy that came to her and that she brought to Elizabeth. God changed Mary from a simple, unknown young girl to a highly favored person!

We have heard this scripture story time and time again. In fact, the meeting of these two women has interested

many writers and scripture scholars through the years. And their story becomes an inspiration for each of us. Let us spend a few minutes thinking about the Magnificat of our own lives. The Lord has done great things for us as well. Do we believe this – really believe this? If we do, then what would our song sound like? We would probably not hesitate to name our good qualities, our gifts from God, as Mary did. We would cite times of our own spiritual challenges blessed by the grace of God. We would see ourselves as someone who cares deeply, someone who looks sincerely into the eyes of our children, spouses, friends, community, the poor. We would care about love, how to give it and what makes us want to give it. Like Mary, we would care about laughing and crying with others and forgiving and talking honestly. How often we would contemplate the ways that would make it better and easier for us to live together in our environment and this world and the hard choices and sacrifices that it would take for that to happen.

So, as we think about Mary’s song, we realize that we, too, can truly sing that song of praise within ourselves. We can sing sometimes in a flickering way, sometimes in a glaring way, the praises of God because we touch hands or look into the eyes or hearts of all those we meet. As Mary and Elizabeth carried life within them, we must carry life and share it with each other. The meeting of Mary and Elizabeth brought Jesus into their midst. How desperately we need to bring Jesus into the midst of our world!

Yes, the Magnificat, Mary’s prayer of faith and joy, could have been recited at every phase of her life. But, the same prayer can be our song of love, justice and compassion at every phase of our lives, every day of our lives. All of us have chosen in one way or another to journey on the unknown path of love and care, and God looks with favor on us as we give our lives to others in service. Let us feel, as did Mary, the Lord’s presence in our lives. Let Mary teach us how to be even better givers of joy and providers of an atmosphere of love and service to our brothers and sisters. The Lord has done great things for us! May God, who is mighty, continue to do great things in us. Then, may we do great things to make our families, communities and the world a place of love and service, truly a home for all our hearts. Holy is God’s name! Holy are we who do God’s work!

GET TO KNOW YOUR SAINT ANNE FAITH FORMATION AND EDUCATION COMMISSION Spotlight on Youth and Young Adult Ministry

The program for high school students at Saint Anne has several components that are intended to creatw a space for teens and offer opportunities for them to further develop their knowledge of their Catholic faith.

PATHS (People After the Holy Spirit) is the two-year Confirmation program. Most students start in their freshman year of high school and are confirmed at the close of their sophomore year. The program is oriented around Decision Point, developed by Matthew Kelly, an Australian theologian and religious educator. Students meet for 12 sessions a year, 8 of those in the home of a catechist (co-taught by another catechist) and 4 sessions in the Parish Center with the entire two-year student group. Within the 4 group session, keynote speakers address the students on topics related to how they have been challenged in their own faith life and have sought to overcome the trials of faith. In the second of the two years, students attend a one-day retreat at the Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington. They are expected to write 4 essays in the course of the year and perform 16 hours of community service.

Liturgical Ministries are available for teens after they are confirmed, such as becoming ministers of Communion or lectors. A number of students continue the ministry of being an altar server into their high school years, something our pastor encourages.

Kairos Retreat is a 4-day retreat program for juniors and seniors intended to introduce students to the Christian Kerygma (the teaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ). Talks on aspects of the Christian life are presented by 8 students and 4 adults, each followed by small group discussion. The sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation are included in the course of the retreat. For many students, the Kairos Retreat is a major highlight of their high school experience. Several reunions are hosted throughout the year for students to gather for sharing, renewing their faith and socializing so as to keep the spirit of Kairos alive.

Night Ministry is one of the great service programs at Saint Anne. For countless years, devoted adults and teens have been feeding economically-impoverished Chicago residents on the far south side, near Lake Michigan. Many families volunteer time, talent and treasure to provide food. Once there, the adults and teens rendezvous with the Night Ministry van, a large vehicle that provides food and medical care for those in need. They set up tables on the street, often on frigid cold nights, and serve the food.

Summer Service is an immersion trip for one week in West Virginia for sophomores, juniors and sen-iors. Students travel by van to the Appalachia Folk Life Center South to assist in the repair of homes for the local residents. While there, they are educated on the culture of the area as well as spend significant time reflecting prayerfully on their daily encounters with the communities within which they work. It is an uplifting experience for the teens, with many of them wanting to repeat it each year.

Saint Anne Faith Formation offers catechetical and formation opportunities for adults and children in formats designed for both households and individuals of all ages and life stages in order to reach and strengthen the entire Saint Anne community.

For parishioners of all ages, there are opportunities throughout the year that provide an enhanced Catholic foundation in participatory and engaging settings, enabling all to grow and share in faith together. For adults, we offer discussion groups and outside speakers who share their wisdom and provide tools to help us apply our faith to the everyday world in which we live.

• Young adults ages 17-21 with developmental delays are encouraged to participate in our SPRED program

• Middle school teens register for Journey small faith groups

• Children in grades 1-5 can register for Children’s Faith Formation

INTERESTED IN FIRST EUCHARIST PREPARATION? First Eucharist preparation is a two-year process that begins in the fall, two years prior to sacrament reception. Those who begin in the fall of first grade will be prepared for sacrament reception in the spring of second grade. First Reconciliation and First Eucharist preparation and reception can also take place at any time beyond second grade.

GETTING FAMILIES INVOLVED IN MASS CELEBRATIONS

Families can participate in our Family-ministered Mass in a variety of ways:

The Family-ministered Mass is a great way to introduce children to the many ways we can all participate in celebrating the liturgy together.

I am saddened to say that I will be losing my Administrative Assistant Karen Poglitsch in the coming year. She and her husband are moving to North Carolina due to a new position he is assuming in his company. Karen has been a driving force behind many of the administrative developments within Youth Ministry since she began 4 years ago. It has been so good to have such a devoted, highly motivated, spiritually-minded Catholic woman working with me in this important work of Saint Anne. Thus, I am in the process of hiring a person to fill the role of Youth Ministry Assistant, reporting to Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. Responsibilities include assisting the Youth Minister with the smooth running of the various Youth Ministry programs during the day, evenings and weekends so flexibility in working hours is necessary. Evening and week-end events include PATHS (the Confirmation program title) large group meetings, PATHS catechist training sessions, Spiritus Confirmation retreats, Kairos closing ceremonies, Kairos reunions, Summer Service meetings, Confirmation interviews, Confirmation rehearsals and Confirmation Masses. This is a part-time position (26-30 hours minimally per week) that offers health insurance, vacation and personal days. In addition, please include a cover letter expressing reasons for interest in the position and relevant experience you might add to the position. The job would begin Monday, July 1st.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process that welcomes adults into the Christian Catholic community who have never been baptized, have been baptized in another faith tradition and those baptized Catholic who have not received the Sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation. There is an open invitation to all interested persons to join the process at any time throughout the year.

Sometime during 90-110 C.E.,1 the evangelist John gathered the oral traditions of his community to write them into a gospel narrative some 60–80 years after Jesus’ death and following the destruc-tion of the Jerusalem Temple by the Romans and their dispersal of the Jewish population out of Jerusalem in 70 C.E. The Jews who were following Jesus’ teachings but who were still part of the Jewish community were now ejected from the midst of the Jews because they definitively self-identified as believers that Jesus was the Messiah, the Anointed One, the Christ. Like the other evangelists,2 John writes less to precisely describe history than to proclaim to his community the kerygma – the good news of Jesus’ Passion, Death and Resurrection.

Scholars accept that this short chapter 21 (only 24 verses) was likely added after the apparent completion of John’s narrative with chapter 20. See 21:4 where the disciples do not realize that it is Jesus who was standing on the shore despite John’s two vivid descriptions at 20:19-29 of the same disciples who so intimately experience the risen Lord that they come to belief!

Note the parallel in Chapter 21 to the story of the Beloved Disciple (BD) and Peter at the tomb in 20. In both stories, it is Peter who goes ahead to get there first; it is the BD who understands what it is he is seeing, and believes that Jesus had risen. This disciple is named the BD because he is noted as being particularly favored by Jesus. He reclines at table next to Jesus, resting his head on his bosom (13:23); he finds out details about the betrayer that

the leader, Peter, does not know (13:25 –); Peter has to get his information from the BD (13:24). So, according to John, the BD seems to be held in higher esteem than Peter. At 10:1-18, John’s Jesus describes that the “shepherd enters by the door” (v.2). Also, the gatekeeper confirms the identity of the shepherd by saying, He who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him, the gatekeeper opens. The shepherd is the one who leads the sheep in and out (vv.3-4). This is the same language John uses to describe the BD during the Passion in chapter 18. After Jesus was arrested, he was taken to the high priest and the BD, known to the high priest, enters with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest but Peter was standing outside the gate. Then the other disciple (the BD), who was known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the woman who guarded the gate, and brought Peter in (v.16). So, the BD is the like a noble shepherd: he enters by the door; the gatekeeper (the woman) recognizes him; he leads the sheep in. Peter is again subordinate; he is not yet the shepherd (the leader); he is one of the sheep.

The threefold test of Peter, starting at 21:15, is the turning point. This is the restoration of Peter to honor after his threefold denial at 18:15. Recall that during the Last Supper (13:31), the confident (cocky?) Peter had exclaimed that he could certainly follow Jesus – even to laying down his life for him. In the very next breath, Jesus predicts Peter’s denials. Could Jesus have misinterpreted Peter’s heart? At v.15, in this post-resurrection pericope,3 Peter, humbly, three times admits that

Sharing the Living Story

the Lord, after all, does know his heart; now, Peter can follow him (v.19). Note, too, that in vv.15-19, John interweaves the tradition of Jesus as the Good Shepherd (10:11) with the tradition of Peter as leader. Jesus, remember, emphasized that it was by his own choice that he would lay down his life for his sheep (10:18). Recall that Peter had boasted at the Last Supper that he himself would willingly lay down his life. Jesus, about to leave his sheep, first emphasizes the necessity of love, and then he increases Peter’s honor by commissioning him as shepherd but note that the sheep remain Jesus’ sheep! Peter is completely reinstated, he is leader. Moreover, Peter will have the chance to lay down his life. As a younger man, Peter could go where he wanted, dress as he wanted (21:18). Now, in his

mature years, someone else would dress him, lead him to where he didn’t want to go and where he would stretch out his hands – on a cross! Remember that this gospel is written after Peter had asked to be put to death upside down on a cross. Peter had indeed “followed him” (v19b).

At the Easter Vigil, we initiate into the Roman Catholic tradition those whom we have instructed, formed, companioned and prayed with for a year or more. During the seven weeks of the Easter season, we and these new Catholics are in the period of mystagogy during which we try to unpack the meaning of our experiences during Holy Week as well as the ones yet to come during the Easter season; stay tuned.

So What? Each Easter season, the Church retells these post-resurrection appearances of Jesus to the disciples; the stories point them unmistakably toward the attitudes and behavior that is expected of them. This does not appear to a mere recounting. Is there something here for us? How do we search these stories for lessons for ourselves? Maybe turn to one another to strengthen solidarity as a community centered on the risen Lord? Perhaps it is within that community that we will come to realize that we are continually enabled to change this world in which we move.

Sacraments We believe that the celebration of the sacraments ranks among the most important gifts that we have. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Ellen Johnston at 847.382.2148.

Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child’s entrance into our faith community.

• Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child

• Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

• Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Call the parish office at 847.382.5300.

Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, the preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to the wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage.

First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the Faith Formation and Education office at 847.620.3067.

Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. For more information, call the PATHS office at 847.620.3072.

Reconciliation: Saturdays, 9:15 a.m. until all are heard or by appointment.

Adult Christian Initiation: If you are looking for a place to belong or a church community to share questions and beliefs, perhaps you would like to find out more about what it means to be a Catholic Christian. Saint Anne would be delighted and honored to share the gift of faith and fellowship with you. Call Michael Beard at 847.620.3070 for information regarding the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:45 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions.
