MOUNT  CARMEL  NEWS

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,

Two things to highlight today – both a tad penitential.

We are alerting you to the annual fundraising campaign in support of the Archdiocese of Newark at all Masses this weekend. What used to be called the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is now called “Sharing God’s Blessings.” We are asked to attain a goal of $73,551.

I am very aware that many of you are still in the process of fulfilling your generous commitments to the Capital Campaign. So, my only request is this: If you are in a position to support the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal even with all the other good things you already support, our new leader, Cardinal Tobin, would appreciate it. In his letter to the priests of Newark he asked us to support this campaign “enthusiastically.”

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. The schedule of Masses and services is highlighted on this page. But I want to stress that the church will be open all day for anyone who wishes to enter, say a prayer, receive ashes, go to confession or even register a complaint.

I found this open door approach most helpful last year and I hope to repeat it. Specifically, I hope you will take note that the doors are open if you are driving by at any time on Wednesday.

Our Lenten Mission “OLMC Calls YOU to Holiness” will commence at all Masses next weekend and through the month of March. I hope it will be time of grace for all of us.

Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,

fr. Dan [email protected]

We will begin to collect cereal donations for the Office of Concern between March 6th and April 6th. WEEKLY  RUNDOWN

Ash Wednesday – March 1st

LENTEN REGULATIONS REGARDING FAST & ABSTINANCE

The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of Fast, only one full meal is permitted and two smaller meals which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast.

On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.

The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially,” or as a whole, is a serious obligation.

The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance.

The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5, 2017 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, June 11, 2017. *Canon 920, §1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.

You are invited to spend some quiet time with Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration following the 8:30 morning Mass on the first Friday of each month followed by Benediction at 3 PM.

SHARING GOD’S BLESSINGS ANNUAL APPEAL 2017

The Annual Appeal is a way to raise money to fund the programs and ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark that impact tens of thousands of lives every year. Our parish receives a portion of the funds raised in achieving our goal. Pledge Sunday is this weekend; our parish’s goal this year is $73,551. Your support of the Annual Appeal is appreciated.

THANK YOU FROM FR. JOSEPH P. O’BRIEN, O.CARM. OF THE CARMELITE MISSIONS

Dear Parishioners,

I have received the very generous donations given at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church for Carmelite Missions. Your tremendous goodness will let us continue to touch the needs of the desperately poor people we are called to serve in the Philippines, Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, Kenya and many other places, as we proclaim the GOOD NEWS of God’s mercy and loving kindness. I am very grateful.

One of the Carmelites you have helped is Fr. Alfredo Guillen in Ciudad Delgado, a poor rural area outside of San Salvador. With your gifts he can purchase baby chicks, laying hens, seed and farming equipment, so that his people can make a better life for themselves, as they struggle on their small plots of land. He is also very grateful.

The Lord Jesus promised an eternal reward to those who would give even a cup of cold water to the poor in His name. You have given so much more than a cup of cold water. May He bless you, as only He can!

u

Our parish contribution to the Carmelite Missions was $15,850. Thanks a lot! − fr. Dan

Next weekend is the Peter’s Pence Collection. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering.
