MOUNT CARMEL NEWS
Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Today is a great day for the Catholic Church! As you may know, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, known to the world as Mother Teresa, is being canonized today, September 4th, in Rome by Pope Francis. By the time you read this, the liturgy will be over and the Church will have another saint to inspire us. Mother Teresa is one of the most famous Catholics of the 20th century. Her name recognition is huge, even among world leaders and presidents. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
In spite of her holiness and her works of charity, she is not without her detractors. Recall the essay in the New York Times on August 27, 2016 featuring an Indian born doctor who is devoting his life to derailing the myth about Mother Teresa. I bring this up today because it is illustrative of modern reality. Though we are not a flawless community, we do have some Catholics who take the gospel seriously and live it honestly. Occasionally, some among us live it so totally that they deserve to be recognized, honored and imitated. Mother Teresa was such a person. Mother Teresa’s reputation was launched by an essay in 1971 by Malcolm Muggeridge called Something Beautiful for God. I have been comforted by another book, Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light: The Private Writings of the Saint of Calcutta (2009). This is a book about her spiritual life and the real experience of a holy woman. Mother Teresa writes of periods of dryness, aridity and what is called the “dark night.” I recommend reading both. Most of all, I want to honor Mother Teresa today and thank God for her life and her witness – Saint Teresa of Kolkata, pray for us. Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
fr. Dan
PASTOR’S LETTER
“It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.”
– Saint Teresa of Kolkata
“Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God.”
– Saint Teresa of Kolkata
“Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person.”

Remembering RJ… Our beloved RJ Sy, five-year old son of Richard and Cheely Sy went home to God on Tuesday of this past week. We held his funeral Mass here at Mount Carmel on Saturday at 9:30. On behalf of the entire Church family, I express our sympathy to his parents, his sisters and his entire family. I also want to thank his family for their heroic efforts to do everything possible for their son. And, I thank RJ’s Church family for the many, many deeds and gifts and prayers to support RJ and his family. Enjoy eternal life, RJ. Thank you for showing us the way.
Love, fr. Dan

A PEOPLE OF MERCY
The Church is the people of God, and the people of God welcome, love, forgive, and encourage others
by how they live.
Have I ever thought about the part I have in God’s plan? If not, how might I see my daily actions with others differently?
Lord, may those persons who come into my life always remind me of your great mercy and kindness. And help me always to do the same for them.
