“Life with Christ is a wonderful adventure.”
– Saint John Paul II
Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Thank you for the wonderful celebration of Fr. Ashley and Fr. Michael’s 50th Anniversary of Ordination. We have all been blessed to know such fine men of Carmel. Special thanks to Meddy Hellman, Rose Ann Miglietta and Debbie Viar who planned, set up, shopped, prepared, hosted and cleaned up the great reception after last Sunday’s noon Mass and many thanks to all those who helped to make this a memorable occasion. Today we welcome our guests who will be living with us this week in the auditorium. Many have stepped up to provide this service to our homeless brothers and sisters. I am grateful to all of you and especially Elliot Guerra who has been chairing this service project for the past year and a half. You may have noticed that the south parking lot was closed when you came to Mass today. Our long-awaited repaving project is underway. Since I am writing this letter in advance once again, I am not able to state exactly how much work has been achieved in the week prior to your reading this. Please know this: The project has been approved by our Finance Committee, our Parish Advisory Board and the Archdiocese of Newark. We will repave the lot, repair the perimeter, remove the island and create seven new spaces as well as ease the constant congestion. The project might take up to three weeks to complete, therefore, please only use the north lot for weekday Mass parking and weekend Mass parking. I will have updates and more details to pass along in the next two weeks. I wish you a blessed summer and I thank you for being the Church family of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
fr. Dan [email protected]

WEEKLY RUNDOWN
July 23rd – 30th, 2017
Family Promise of Bergen County and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church have teamed up to “open the doors of mercy.” There are many ways to help! Please email me, Elliot Guerra, at [email protected] or visit our website www.olmc.us and click on the Family Promise image for ways to volunteer or donate. Here are some ways to help:
Volunteer Shifts of volunteers are required to cook and serve dinner in the evening. We can also use volunteers in the morning to set up for breakfast. At least two volunteers must say overnight as per Family Promise regulations. Fr. Dan, Mr. Ed McElroy (OLMC Facilities Manager) and I have already taken three of the seven nights!
Donate We are filling our pantry with items for the families, for example luncheon meats, snacks and more. Also, while Family Promise provides beds, we need gently used or new linens and new toiletries.
Pray Please offer up the volunteers, organizers and families in your prayers during the time of service that the Spirit of God fosters within us a successful event. We understand people travel during the summer and if you are, we hope you enjoy your rest and ask that you continue to pray for us. May OLMC continue to be a place that “No matter who you are, no matter what you’ve done, no matter where you’re from, no matter where you’re going, no matter how good or bad things seem, you are always welcome.”
Fr. Dan has challenged us in the spirit of Pope Francis' call to "Open the doors of mercy!" After working for two years,
our opportunity has arrived! The OLMC community is opening its doors to working homeless families beginning this Sunday, July 23rd through July 30th, 2017 as part of the temporary housing program run by Family Promise of Bergen County. The families will be staying in our parish auditorium (Odyssey Theatre) this week. We are providing shelter, dinner, breakfast and supplying lunch. The families only eat and sleep here during the evening hours; during the day they work and their children attend daycare. "…the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope."

WEEKLY RUNDOWN
This week we observe the Feast of St. James, Apostle on Tuesday, July 25th. “St. James, known as the Greater, in order to distinguish him from the other Apostle St. James, our Lord's cousin, was St. John's brother. With Peter and John he was one of the witnesses of the Transfiguration, as later he was also of the agony in the garden.
The pilgrimage to St. James of Compostella in the Middle Ages attracted immense crowds; after the pilgrimage to Rome or the Holy Land, it was the most famous and the most frequented pilgrimage in Christendom. The pilgrim paths to Compostella form a network over Europe; they are dotted with pilgrims' hospices and chapels, some of which still exist.
St. James is mentioned in the Roman Canon of the Mass.” Source: www.catholicculture.org

TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE Matthew 13:24, 37-38
Sunday, July 23rd
“The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field…He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom.”
“As children of God, we are all ‘good seeds,’ blessed by God with the potential to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s plan when we share our talents and our financial gifts to help build God’s kingdom on earth. Through our stewardship we sow ‘good seeds’ on earth to ultimately help each other get to Heaven!”

GIVING & GRATITUDE
“Dear Father O’Neill:
At this time I want to express my deep gratitude to you and all at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish for the outstanding success of
the Ladies’ Night Out Event for the benefit of Siena House Shelter held on May 12, 2017 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School.
Siena House received a check in the amount of $22,000, which was raised at the Event. I am overwhelmed at the amount of the check and on behalf of the Staff, mothers and babies of our shelter, I extend my deep appreciation to you and all those who made the night possible, especially the Women’s Siena Ministry Group led by Jennifer Schippert.
These ladies have been raising funds for Siena House for the past ten years, starting with three years of Garage Sales and then seven Ladies’ Night Out Events. Each year, they seem to do better than before! Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter and Mothers’ Day “Gifts of Love” have been poured out on our mothers and babies through their efforts and the generosity of your Parishioners.
Thank you, Father Dan, for making the school auditorium available to be used for the occasion. It was such a great space for all those wonderful ladies to enjoy such a spirited evening together.
May God continue to shower His abundant blessings on you and all those who have been so caring and generous to Siena House over all these years.
With gratitude, Sr. Mary Doris, O.P. Director”
