WELCOME
A Word From fr. Dan –
Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
Please join me in expressing our gratitude to Deacon David Loman and his wife, Carol for more than 25 years of faithful service to our parish and to prisoners incarcerated in New Jersey prisons.
David’s decision means that he is stepping back from active service. He is a deacon for life and is more than welcome to function as such here any time he wishes, such as at family sacramental events and the like. Ad multos annos, dear David. God be with you in the years ahead.
As it happens, I also wish to inform the parish that we have been asked by the Carmelites to welcome Anthony Armstrong, O. Carm. into our communal and parish life. Anthony is a transitional deacon, on the path to the priesthood. I will be telling you a lot more about him once his appointment is officially announced by the Archdiocese of Newark.
So, the news is mixed today. God’s blessing to David and Carol Loman and welcome to Deacon Anthony Armstrong.
Have a blessed celebration of the Fourth of July.
Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,
fr. Dan [email protected]
Stay connected with OLMC this summer as we spotlight our Medical Mission team. Team members give us a candid look at who they are and how, in the words of Pope Francis, “their lives bring new life to birth all around them.”

Today’s Message
Our Dear Brothers and Sisters at Mount Carmel,
We believe that some of our parishioners may have wondered if Deacon David and his wife Carol are okay—we haven’t seen them in a long time. Yes, we are feeling alright because we have confidence in our physicians, medicine that is effective and treatments that will continue to help us. However, based on our physicians’ recommendations, it is time for us to step back in active diaconate ministry. We will certainly miss our prayer community and your joyful smiles.
In Carmel, Deacon David and Carol Loman
And so the story began… Deacon Dave’s journey to the Diaconate began September 17, 1975…
David, a semi-practicing Jew, went on a couples’ retreat with his wife, Carol. “I was tricked into going!” he says with a laugh. It was during the retreat that he had a transformative experience with Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. A priest asked him, “Do you believe that the Eucharist is Jesus?” to which he replied, “I know it.” “We believe in signs, the Jewish people,” David says. “And signs kept showing us the path.” His curiosity of Christianity led him to be baptized and confirmed a Catholic. He committed to lectoring and serving as a Eucharistic Minister. David would visit hospitals, senior care centers and the homebound sharing the love of Christ. David was ordained a permanent deacon for the Archdiocese of Newark on May 16, 1992. “It is a ministry of charity, the Diaconate,” he says. He serves two churches: Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the other, with barbed wire and electric fencing all around it. Deacon Dave has worked continuously in prisons so he was a perfect choice when a former archbishop asked him to become the Director of Prison Ministry from 1997-1998. Thank you Deacon Dave and Carol!
“Do not be afraid; just have faith.”

Homeless Family Program Hosted by OLMC
July 29 – August 5, 2018
Last year fr. Dan challenged us in the spirit of Pope Francis’ call to “Open the doors of mercy!” After working for two years and a successful inaugural run last summer, a new opportunity has arrived!
The OLMC community will open her doors to working homeless families from July 29th through August 5th, 2018 as part of the temporary housing program run by Family Promise of Bergen County.
As of this writing, two single mothers and a total of three children will be staying in our Academy for a week. We will provide shelter, dinner, breakfast and supply lunch. The families only eat and sleep here during the evening hours; during the day they work and their children attend daycare and summer camp.
There are many ways to help! Please email Elliot Guerra at [email protected] with what you can do. Here are some ways to help:
Volunteer Shifts of volunteers are required to cook and serve dinner in the evening. We can also use volunteers in the morning to set up for breakfast. At least two volunteers must stay overnight as per Family Promise regulations. Fr. Dan, Ed McElroy and I have already taken three of the seven nights.
Donate We will need to fill our pantry with items for the families, such as luncheon meats, snacks and more. Also, while Family Promise provides beds, we will need gently used or new linens and new toiletries.
Pray Please offer up the volunteers, organizers and families in your prayers leading up to and during the time of service that the Spirit of God fosters within us a successful event. We understand that people travel during the summer and, if you are, we hope you enjoy your rest and ask that you continue to pray for us.
May OLMC continue to be a place that “No matter who you are, no matter what you’ve done, no matter where you’re from, no matter where you’re going, no matter how good or bad things seem, you are always welcome.”

OLMC Medical Mission To José Galvez, Peru Is Fast Approaching!
From OLMC’s Parish Bulletin Archives…
“About 25 medical personnel and other volunteers have been meeting monthly and are excited to plan OLMC’s first medical mission…All of us are interested in using our skills to help those less fortunate."
—Rosemary Russell April 23, 2017
At A Glance…
Medical Mission Team Member, David Moyer
Hometown: Northfield, New Jersey
I like the parish of OLMC because… The staff and parishioners have always been extremely friendly, welcoming, and gracious.
When I’m not in church or at work you’ll find me… Playing tennis, golf, traveling, and working for Medline Industries.
Fun Fact: My wife Cindy takes our service dog, Snickers, to visit schools and nursing homes.
Ask me about: Cooking and cocktails.
Personal Motto: Give love.
“It is love that gives worth to all things.”
– St. Teresa Avila
Medical Mission team members are being interviewed for our parish bulletin. This week we feature David Moyer for a look at how he is involved in OLMC’s first Medical Mission.
Why did you choose to be part of the Medical Mission team to Peru? In college I was part of a service trip to Leon, Nicaragua. Additionally, being in the medical sales business, I thought having experience in this field could benefit the team of clinicians. Also, fr. Dan was very passionate in his request to the parish to serve.
How are you helping the team prepare? I am helping coordinate, receive, count, and pack supplies necessary for a successful trip.
What would you say to parishioners who perhaps want to join a ministry but are a little hesitant? It’s for a good cause, you meet likeminded parishioners, it doesn’t take a lot of time, and you’ll touch the very people God asks us to serve.
What are some of the challenges of preparing for a trip like this? Starting from scratch with no personal experience is challenging.
Is there a specific feeling, memory or story you want to share about the team’s preparation? fr. Dan, Vincent, Marian, Laina and especially Rosemary’s dedication to the mission over the past two years is incredible.
José Galvez is one of twelve districts of the province Celendín in Peru. The districts of Peru are the third-level country
subdivisions of Peru. They are subdivisions of the provinces, which are, in turn, subdivisions of the larger regions or departments. There are 1,838 districts in total. A 1982 law requires a minimum of residents in an area for a new district to be legally established.
