WELCOME

OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL FEAST DAY CELEBRATION

SATURDAY, JULY 14, 2018

BARBECUE OLMC NORTH PARKING LOT

AFTER 5 PM MASS

Everyone is invited!

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,

This weekend we are celebrating the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. We will offer prayer and Marian hymns all weekend. We will have a barbecue in her honor after the 5:00 PM Mass on July 14. And, on the feast day itself, July 16, we will do the full Mass of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

This weekend will also be your first chance to meet our newest Carmelite staff member, Deacon Anthony Armstrong. He is eager to dive in and so you be meeting in many different ways in the coming months.

As many of you know, there was a tragic automobile accident on July 6 where a family from St. Anastasia Church, Teaneck lost a father and four daughters. There has been a lot of publicity about this sad, sad accident. I knew the Trinidad family personally as they were very faithful members of the parish and devoted to our family Mass every week at 11:30.

There are many ways to support Mrs. Mary Rose Trinidad, the only survivor of the tragedy. I will be asking your generosity in a special second collection at all Masses this weekend, July 14–15, to offer some additional financial help. Thank you for your kindness, and hug your children and grandchildren one extra time in memory of the Trinidad family.

Enjoy the Feast!

Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,

fr. Dan [email protected]

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us!

Letter of the Prior General for the Feast of

Our Lady of Mount Carmel 2018

Dear brothers and sisters of the Carmelite Family:

The solemnity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is approaching and - like every year - I would like to send you my most cordial fraternal greetings on our patronal feast, in which we remember Mary under the beloved title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. We commemorate Our Mother and Sister, the Domina loci (mistress of the place) that is at the center of our lives and that inspires and encourages us to live our Carmelite charism at the service of the Gospel, of the people of God and of all humanity.

Congratulations to all. May the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel be a true time of grace, devotion, faith and conversion.

With fraternal affection, Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm. Prior General Source: http://ocarm.org

Please see page 8 for the novena that we will be praying from Saturday, July 14th at the 5 PM Mass through Sunday, July 22nd at the 12 Noon Mass

and for a brief history of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

WEEKLYRUNDOWN

Homeless Family Program Hosted by OLMC

July 29 – August 5, 2018

Last year fr. Dan challenged us in the spirit of Pope Francis’ call to “Open the doors of mercy!” After working for two years and a successful inaugural run last summer, a new opportunity has arrived!

The OLMC community will open her doors to working homeless families from July 29th through August 5th, 2018 as part of the temporary housing program run by Family Promise of Bergen County.

A mom with a three-month boy and 10-year old daughter and a mom with two boys, ages three and six, will be staying in our Academy for a week. We will provide shelter, dinner, breakfast and supply lunch. The families only eat and sleep here during the evening hours; during the day they work and their children attend daycare and summer camp.

There are many ways to help! Please see “Ways To Help” on this page and continue reading below.

Volunteer Shifts of volunteers are required to cook and serve dinner in the evening. We can also use volunteers in the morning to set up for breakfast. At least two volunteers must stay overnight as per Family Promise regulations. Fr. Dan, Ed McElroy and I have already taken three of the seven nights.

Donate We will need to fill our pantry with items for the families, such as luncheon meats, snacks and more. Also, while Family Promise provides beds, we will need gently used or new linens and new toiletries.

Pray Please offer up the volunteers, organizers and families in your prayers leading up to and during the time of service that the Spirit of God fosters within us a successful event. We understand that people travel during the summer and, if you are, we hope you enjoy your rest and ask that you continue to pray for us.

May OLMC continue to be a place that “No matter who you are, no matter what you’ve done, no matter where you’re from, no matter where you’re going, no matter how good or bad things seem, you are always welcome.”

SEVEN THEMES OF CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING

The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society. The following themes are at the heart of Catholic social teaching:

1. Life and dignity of the human person 2. Call to family, community, and participation 3. Rights and responsibilities 4. Option for the poor and vulnerable 5. The dignity of work and the rights of workers 6. Solidarity 7. Care for God’s creation

TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE Sunday, July 15th

Mark 6:7-13 “Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick—no food, no sack, no money in their belts.”

“Jesus’ disciples could not bring much at all on their mission, but still they were able to attract followers, drive out demons, and cure many who were sick. They had the model of Jesus, whom they had witnessed accomplishing these things. They assuredly had the Lord’s guidance. God provided all they needed.”

Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel—Monday, July 16: “The Carmelites have celebrated their patronal feast on [July 16] since the 14th century, for according to tradition St. Simon Stock was given the brown scapular by the Blessed Virgin on this day (1251). The Order of Carmel dates back to a group of Western hermits who in the 12th century settled on Mount Carmel, overlooking the plain of Galilee, in imitation of the prophet Elijah (see 1 Kings 18:19-46 and 2 Kings 2:25). They grouped themselves around a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady. In the 13th century, the Order of Carmel as we know it was formed, retaining the twin devotions of the early hermits: to Elijah and his solitary prayer, and to Our Lady under the title of Mount Carmel.”

Prayer to Our Lady of Mount Carmel

O Most Holy Mary of Mount Carmel, pray for me.

You watch over those who follow the Gospel of your Son with a mother’s loving care.

Look now upon me and cover me with the embrace of your special protection.

Strengthen me when I am weak. Enlighten the darkness of my mind

with your wisdom. Increase in me the virtues of

faith, hope and charity. As you fulfilled all of our hopes and dreams

as members of the Church, help me now to show forth the love of

Jesus in my life. O Mother of Carmel,

Comfort and protect me all the days of my life. Amen.

The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel gives us an opportunity to show our love and gratitude to Mary for her continued guidance and protection. We will be praying this special prayer for nine consecutive days from July 14th through July 22nd.

WEEKLYRUNDOWN

Medical Mission team members are being interviewed for our parish bulletin. This week we feature Elena Ugarte for a look at how she is involved in OLMC’s first Medical Mission.

Why did you choose to be part of the Medical Mission team to Peru? I was born in Perú. When I learned that fr. Dan was organizing a medical mission to go there, I thought What better way to help both my parish and my country of birth!

How are you helping the team prepare? We are eight translators going to Lima, Perú. We already had some papers, faxes and medical terms to be translated. We help with anything the others on the team need.

What would you say to parishioners who perhaps want to join a ministry but are a little hesitant? We are a big family and even little things are really appreciated. All for one and one for all.

What are some of the challenges of preparing for a trip like this? Yo hablo español, but I have never been a medical translator!

Is there a specific feeling, memory or story you want to share about the team’s preparation? Every meeting has a memory, but helping with the preparation of International Night—our first fundraiser—was a joy. Everything was donated from all over the world: food, colorful decorations and professional performers. The best Peruvian Pisco Sour and Cuban Mojito were prepared and blended “in situ” and a long line of guests waited to taste them. It was an unforgettable Mount Carmel night!

OLMC Medical Mission To José Galvez, Peru Is Fast Approaching!

From OLMC’s Parish Bulletin Archives…

“…International Night dinner and celebration…generated about $20,000 of net profit to support our medical mission to José Galvez, Peru next year. Thank you one and all! José Galvez, Peru, here we come!”

—fr. Dan November 12, 2017

At A Glance…

Medical Mission Team Member, Elena Ugarte

Hometown: Bergenfield, New Jersey

I like the parish of OLMC because… It is a big and caring family.

When I’m not in church or at work you’ll find me… Reading, dancing or preparing Pisco Sour.

Fun Fact: I have started driving on a highway (only one!).

Ask me about: My family.

Personal Motto: It is not rich who has more, but who needs less.

South of José Galvez is the valley of Lurín, one of the three valleys of the city of Lima. Known for its archaeological temple of Pachacamac, settled in 200 A.D., site that was once the most

important religious center of indigenous people in the region during pre-Hispanic times. This expansive location is home to ancient pyramids dating back to the 1300s, temples and palaces built between 800-1450 CE, remains of frescoes, and many artifacts that offer a look into the lives of its ancient inhabitants.

Gratitude turns what we have into enough.
