HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

The Anvil, Issue 248, is the monthly newsletter of

the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The

International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms

and phrases from Star Trek are owned by

Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of

Paramount Communications and all rights are

reserved.

Greetings, If you haven’t watch “The Big Bang Theory” then the following article may contain Spoilers. The Big Bang Theory is really rocking out on the Star Trek Guest Star’s. The series has had in past seasons Wil Wheaton, LeVar Burton and Brent Spiner. This season, even though it was just a voice over, Leonard Nimoy was a guest Star. It was an interesting piece using a Star Trek action figure to play Spock and some creative sets to show Sheldon on Star Trek like planets. The one thing I was interested in was the toy transporter. I don’t remember a stand alone transporter. The only one I remember is the one that came with the bridge set. Did they make such a thing or was this just something for the series. Another guest appearance was Stephen Hawking, who is the well know physicist. He can also be considered a Star Trek actor since Mr. Hawking was a guest star on Star Trek the Next Generation Season 6, Descent Part 1. Mr. Hawking played a hologram of himself in a poker game against Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton and Mr. Data. Mr. Hawking won the hand that they were playing at the time. I hope they bring other Star Trek actors along in the coming years. If you have any topics of interest you would like to see in the newsletter send your articles or updates to

[email protected]. See you around the ship.

March 10, 2012 – Social:

The social was slim this month. I think with the change in schedule and notice problems we didn’t get a good turn out. Those attended watch Star Trek Classic.

Attendance: 5 people.

Personnel Updates:

Cadet Haley Youngblood who just turned 18, will finish Springville High School this June. Haley has

been accepted to go to the University of Montevallo this fall.

Opportunities:

I am the head of the Trek Track for Alabama Phoenix Festival. They are looking for volunteers to help

with the festival. If you want to help you can go to this link and click on volunteers.

http://www.alabamaphoenixfestival.com/index.html

Rules for Volunteers

• All volunteers are expected to be helpful and courteous to APF attendees and guests. • All volunteers are expected to work a minimum of 16 hours. This can include set-up and takedown

time. (More than 16 hours is appreciated and earns you Phoenix Feather points.) • All volunteers are expected to attend 1 of the 3 volunteer meetings that will be held prior to the 2012

event. See the Volunteer page of the Alabama Phoenix Festival website for dates, times and locations. • As a volunteer who survives the event and follows the above rules, you will be fed and clothed (at

least for the weekend) and most importantly you will be eligible to be work at future APF events. • There is a one-time staff registration fee of $10.

All volunteer forms will be subject to approval. If you pre-register and are then later called to be a

volunteer, don't worry. We will refund your registration cost or transfer it to another person.

If you want to help with the Star Trek Track, a Star Trek uniform would be a great help.

SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,

The new Commandant's Challenge is to donate food to your local food banks. This is a challenge to all SFMC personnel and is reported on the unit reports.
