HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

The Anvil, Issue 253, is the monthly newsletter of

the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The

International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms

and phrases from Star Trek are owned by

Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of

Paramount Communications and all rights are

reserved.

Greetings, I am dedicating this Anvil to my hero Neil Armstrong. I was always into space even as a little kid. I think that is why

I was in to Star Trek as it showed us exploring space. I don’t remember watching the moon landing since I was only 5 years old at the time but I do remember drinking Tang and having the Lunar rover you got with each purchase of a jar. I did not meet Mr. Armstrong but I did meet Buzz Aldrin when I helped with a book signing of his. I also went to the Air & Space Museum that Mr. Armstrong had in his home town of Wapakoneta, Ohio. I hope that we can continue to reach for the stars just as Mr. Armstrong did.

I also like to say a “Happy Birthday” to a person whose birthday I can not forget because she was born on September 8, 1986, my niece, Abigail Miller. Before she was born my brother said I would not remember her birthday unless it had something to do with Star Trek. Well, as it happened, it did, on the 20th anniversary of Star Trek. Happy Birthday, Abigail!

If you have any topics of interest you would like to see in the newsletter send your articles or updates to [email protected].

As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected]

Wow! I can’t believe its September, and summer is officially over. But we know that unofficially it’s still summer. There’s still time for cookouts and trips to the lake or the beach. And the weather is perfect for football. Our next major social won’t be a cookout, but food will be involved. The annual Fall Feast will take place in November at Pete and Sue Ellen’s.

And I think Pete will probably keep with tradition and cook the turkey. Believe it or not, he cooks a delicious turkey. Sides, drinks and snacks will be provided. We will also have the usual games for those game players. So mark November 10 on your calendar and plan to attend.

I was looking over one of the Anvil’s and noticed MarkAdam’s note that he was looking for articles, reports, or stories for the Anvil. I would like to add my invitation to you to submit an article, report or story. It doesn’t have to be Pulitzer Prize material, just something entertaining.

That’s all this time. I’ll be out of town during the September meeting/social, so I’ll see you at the Fall Feast.

August 11, .2012 – Bowling Night:

For those who attended, a fun time was had at the Brunswick Riverview Lanes. We had no expert bowlers but some of the participants did get a few good rolls in. Even I rolled two strikes and a spare in the 2 games we played. In all there were 16 strikes and 26 spares. So I think our little group showed the pins who was boss. The winner was Mike in both games.

SSttaarr TTrreekk NNeewwss We pay respects to the passing of Neil Armstrong. Neil Armstrong was as everyone knows the first man on

the moon. His small step for a man was a giant leap for mankind in bringing to us a new world of

understanding. Many of the things we have today are because of the advances that were made to get a man to

the moon. The best statement I found about Neil Armstrong came from his family:

“For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his

example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear

night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.”

This Anvil is dedicated to him for his inspiration in space exploration ;)

For those going to be in the Orlando area you can go to the Star Trek Experience. It has a ¾ mock up

classic bridge, the Raptor shuttle craft from Nemesis, several costumes and timeline for Star Trek. It was small

and not on scale of the Las Vegas Experience, but should do well in the Orlando area.

Walter Koenig will receive his Star on the Walk of Fame September 10, 2012. Walter Koenig is best know

for his roll as Chekov in Star Trek and Bester (the man we most love to hate) on Babylon 5. This is a small part

of the over 100 times he has appeared on television with no less then 42 different character including a gang

leader in Alfred Hitchcock Presents to a middle age Tom Sawyer in The Boys of Autumn. The celebration starts

on September 8 the 46th anniversary of Star Trek at the Egyptian theater with a celebrity dinner & roast on the

9th at Beverly Garland Hotel. Congratulations, from the crew of the Hephaestus.

Sir Patrick Stewart is lending his voice as the Huntmaster on Futurama. Bender (voiced by John

DeMaggio) will be giving Sir Patrick the run around in the Episode 31st Century Foxhunt.

Need some new Star Trek Toys? Then get your pocketbooks ready because Diamond Select Toys are

coming out with several new ships, weapons and figures. Ships include the Enterprise B, Klingon Bird of Prey

and The Enterprise E from Nemesis. The weapons include a Klingon Disruptor and a Phaser/Communicator

set. They are going old school for the 8 inch figures with Kirk and Spock figures form Mirror, Mirror universe.
