HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

Greeting from your Captain,

I am dedicating this Anvil to Leonard Nimoy. Mr. Nimoy died Fed. 27. Mr. Nimoy was my first real hero

since I was very young: first as Mr. Spock, then as the actor himself. I learned who Mr. Nimoy was from his

book “I am not Spock.” The book gave me insight not only of the character Mr. Spock but the kind of man Mr.

Nimoy was. One of my favorite memories is the “In Search of . . .” program that he hosted. It dealt with some

of the mythical things like Big Foot and the Bermuda Triangle but it was a good show on how to look at things

differently. Leonard Nimoy will be missed. He was 83. He lived up to his most famous quote “Live long and

Prosper.” Mr. Nimoy had a long life and was very

prosperous not only in money but in his many family and

friends. I believe Nathan Fillion said it best:” I have and

always shall be your Fan.”

Ships business: If you have a review, article, story or

some personal achievements you would like to share with

your fellow crewmen please send them to the email below.

Leonard Nimoy’s death saddened me. He truly was a Star Trek icon. He was the guest speaker at my very first convention in Atlanta quite a few years ago. That was a magical time for me for I was able to buy Star Trek stuff and meet Star Trek fans from other areas. And I was able to see and hear Spock. Yes, he will be missed.

Now to ship business. First, congratulations to two crew members for receiving a promotion. Phillip Mangina, Jr. was promoted to Chief Petty Officer, and Donald Arnold was promoted to Ensign 3rd Class.

Also, Congratulations to Donald Arnold for receiving his Latnium Boothby for finishing 200 Starfleet Academy courses. Way to go Donald! That’s all this month. See you next time. Pat Hicks [email protected]

The social was great fun. Social was at Mohney's home. If you were not there you missed a good game of

Dalmuti: 4 great, 1 regular and 1 uncalled revolution. Pete won and was hard to beat since he was Great Dalmuti for the first 4 rounds. Brenda came within 4 points of Pete but her luck changed and she ended up Great Peon in the last 2 rounds

causing her to fall behind again. We also watched several Marvel animation films. Pop, chips, dip and cookies were also available. Pizza was there for a small donation.

I loved him like a brother. We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love.

- William Shatner

It is wit h sadness that I heard of Leonard Nimoy's death. I was lucky to spend many happy, inspiring

hours with him. He won't be forgotten.

- Sir Patrick Stewart

The death of Leonard Nimoy is indeed an immense

loss to us all. I only hope that during this difficult time

we can all take comfort in the everlasting impact he

has made. As Spock he portrayed the first

Roddenberry character, an outsider who truly let us

see ourselves. Leonard Nimoy’s talent allowed

millions to learn more about who we are and who we

want to be. I will always thank him for that.

RIP, Mr. Nimoy. You really did live long and prosper,

and we were all the richer for it.

- Jeri Ryan

If I had to say anything, it would be that the quote

from TWOK is a good statement. "Of all the souls I

encountered in my travels, his was the most human."

Leonard was a good man, an icon, part of a great

image of hope. I only hope that Gene, Spock, Bones,

Scotty, and Nurse Chapel are together and well on

the other side of paradise. Meanwhile, on this side of

paradise, we say, God Bless and Godspeed,

Leonard. As you liked to end you tweets and wise

sayings: LLAP.

Ensign 3rdClass Donald Arnold

I have been, and always shall be, your fan. Thank

you.

- Nathan Fillion

The eulogies for Leonard will be affirmative, loving

and respectful. That’s what people confirm after the

passing of others, whether or not they draw an

accurate picture. It is my honor to say that in this

case it’s true; Leonard Nimoy was all those things.

He had great professionalism as an actor. On the set

he was consistently the character he played. In fact, I

got to know Mr. Spock long before I knew the actor

who played him. It was a mark of his integrity that he

was so loyal to the role he portrayed. When I finally

did get to know the man better I discovered his

compassion, his intelligence and his humanity. All of

which laid the foundation for his keen sense of

philanthropy.

I was struck by his integrity and his desire to be

honest and straight forward in all he did. We were

never close friends but I never stopped believing that

if I ever had need for such a friend he would be

there.

- Walter Koenig

RIP Leonard Nimoy. So many of us at NASA were inspired by ‘Star Trek.’ Boldly go . . .” the U.S. Space Agency

We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. And yet it should be noted that in the midst of our sorrow, this

death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my

It's very simple. Scissors cuts paper. Paper covers rock. Rock crushes lizard. Lizard poisons Spock. Spock

smashes scissors. Scissors decapitates lizard. Lizard eats paper. Paper disproves Spock. Spock vaporizes

rock. And as it always has, rock crushes scissors.

I am convinced That if all mankind

Could only gather together In one circle

Leonard Nimoy

How do you describe Leonard Nimoy. He was an actor, writer, producer, director, poet, host, voiceover artist, photographer, patron of the arts, philanthropist, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be known as Mr. Spock by most but that was only as small part of who he was. His Spock character may have been best know as he help bridge the gap for outsiders to be involved in the world around them that often seemed alien to these outsiders. Before Star trek Mr. Nimoy was in various movies and TV shows including Them, Twilight Zone, Wagon Train and The Outer Limits. He worked in an episode of The Lieutenant, with the yet unknown Gene Roddenberry. He also worked with William Shatner in an episode of Then Man from U.N.C.L.E. After the TV show, Star Trek, wrapped he continued on acting including moving one stage over from Star Trek to Mission: Impossible to replace Martin Landau as their master-of-disguise spy. An interesting note is that Martin Landau was first chosen to play Spock but had turned it down. Mr. Nimoy also did hosting duties in the 70’s on the paranormal show In Search of…. He also worked with J.J. Abrams on his series Fringe, (2008-2013) Leonard Nimoy always had an internal battle with being Spock to the extent of writing two autobiographies of his struggles. The 1st was called I am Not Spock and 20 years later writing I am Spock, - books I highly recommend if you are a fan of acting and or Star Trek. Because of this internal conflict, Mr. Nimoy was not set to do a new Star Trek series that they were trying to produce, but when they decided to do a movie instead they were able to get him to come back for that. Mr. Nimoy directed many productions including; Star Trek III: Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Three Men and A Baby and his pride and joy, The Good Mother. He is also know for his musical pursuits including recordings of Proud Mary and The Legend of Bilbo Baggins Mr. Nimoy will be missed but I think we can take comfort from his last tweet. . .

A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP.

His perfect moments are in the memory of a lot of people who loved him.

He was 84 years old. Mr. Bennett is credited with revitalizing the Star Trek franchise after Paramount Pictures had doubts after the costly Star Trek the Motion Picture. Mr. Bennett was a successful writer and producer of shows like Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Women before he signed on to do Star Trek. After Star Trek, he producer other movies and shows including A Women called Golda featuring Leonard Nimoy playing opposite of Ingrid Bergman. VISOR becoming a reality

Geordi LaForge was the blind helmsman and later engineer of the Starship Enterprise. He was able to do his work with a electronic device called a VISOR (Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement). This device is becoming a reality through the Mayo Clinic and Dr. Raymond Iezzi Jr., researcher/ophthalmologist. Allen Zderad, a 68-year-old Minnesota man who lost his sight from the degenerative eye disease, retinitis pigmentosa, was fitted with Dr. Iezzi’s “Second Sight Argus II" retinal prosthesis system. Mr. Zderad was able to see his wife for the first time in years. The device allows him to “see” shapes and forms. Mr. Zderad said of the device:”It's crude, but it's significant. It'll work.” (http://www.startrek.com)

Region 2 Summit

The Region 2 Summit is going to be at the LaPlaya Resort in Daytona Beach, Fl on March 27 – 29, 2015. The Summit is a place to get together with other ships in Region 2 to have fun and learn what other chapters are doing in their meetings. This would also be a good time to meet the new Region Coordinator. Tickets are $35 per person and hotel rooms are $84 plus tax per night. So plan now to attend.

Star Trek: The New Adventures: A Warrior Returns

By: Donald Arnold

Boreth was cold when the landing party materialized.

Snow cascaded from the sky making it nearly impossible

to see. A chilled wind sent a shiver down the spines of

everyone. Bill stepped forward first and, at a glance,

guessed no one had been here in a while. That theory was

altered rather quickly. A bright flame glowed in the

darkness of the monastery. The landing party carefully

wandered towards the doors, which eerily sat slightly

opened. Bill nudged the door with his staff. It whisked

open as if it were weightless. “Who’s in here?”. An ancient

sounding voice answered, “The Forgotten who was

Unforgettable.”

An elderly looking Klingon stepped from the shadows.

Spock did facial recognition on him. “Captain, if my

hypothesis is correct. This man is Kahless the

Unforgettable.” The aged Klingon laughed and remarked,

“Is it that hard to tell? Honor and truth go hand in hand.

By telling you a lie, I would risk honor, which is not a risk

I would take.” Bill spoke with Kahless for the better part

of fifteen minutes before asking about the file. Bill

inquired, “Did you have any dealings with the Federation?

I found a file that claimed you were in hiding for

something. Where have you been?” Kahless gave him a

strange look and responded, “You already know, if you

have the secrets of the Federation. Nevertheless, I’ll tell

you. I’ve been on Boreth since I left Qo’nos. I had a

bunker underground for years. I wanted to take my

teachings of honor far beyond the Klingon galaxies but . . .

a young Admiral stopped me. He was big on politics. By

the time I reached the Sol System, there was half a fleet

prepared to kill me if I didn’t leave. Therefore, I came to

Boreth quickly and began a life underground.”

The Admiral had been Admiral James Nicks, former

President of the United Federation of Planets. This was the

third project that had been uncovered. If they could find

Sarek’s katra keeper and the information behind

OPERATION: STARSHIP RAIN, they would have

cleared everything.

Bill convinced Kahless to join them. With James Kirk,

Ambassador Spock, Jeremiah Livingston, and now

Kahless, they may have a way to fight the war on Nicks.

They left Boreth and headed to Vulcan.

On Earth … Other matters were being handled. James

Nicks, or as he was called in the collective, Narotis, was

soon to execute his plans. Bill would be dead, the

Enterprise crew would be imprisoned and the secrets

would remain secret. However, news that Bill had found

James Kirk and Livingston was splitting the New

Collective’s mind. The New Collective was still unaware

as to whether Kahless had been found. Never the less,

STARSHIP RAIN would bring them back to Earth and the

New Collective was waiting. Vengeance was waiting.

Resistance was futile.

Romulus was quite dark this particular day. Empress

Sela had sent soldiers to Boreth. When they returned, they

had reported just missing someone. They had discovered

footsteps in the snow and other signs that people had been

there including the warp signature of a Starship. Empress

Sela contacted her secret ally. A shadowy figure

materialized on screen and said, “Do not tell me they

escaped again. Kahless was our chance. We can’t conquer

if you keep failing us.” Sela looked up and said, “The New

Collective is a powerful enemy. Starfleet rogues only

make it worse. I’ll keep trying.” The figure snapped,

“You’re running out of chances, Romulan!” The screen

shot to black.

Reviews Star Wars Rebels by: Captain MarkAdam Miller

Disney Channel and Disney XD

(Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article)

If you have not been watching Star Wars: Rebels then you are missing a good

show. This show picks up five years before Star Wars: A New Hope. It follows a

14/15 year old boy, Ezra Bridger, who has joined a Rebel cell to fight the Empire.

His main reason to join is to learn the ways of the Jedi from Kanan Jarrus, an

unconventional Jedi that survived Emperor Plantine’s General Order 66. They

work out of a small starship called The Ghost Owned by Captain Hera Syndulla:

a Twi'lek. Also in the rebel group: Sabine Wren, who is knowledgeable in

weapons and explosives; Garazeb "Zeb" Orrelios, a Lasat honor guard, who

is the muscles of the group; and C1-10P, a.k.a. "Chopper", an older model

droid that has been patched up with whatever they can find to keep him

running.

Several Star Wars main characters show up including Darth Vader, Grand

Moff Tarkin, Lando Calrissian, Senator Bail Organa (Liea’s Dad), C-3PO and, of

course, R2-D2. They are mostly in the background but add to the Star Wars

Methos. It is also nice that they have James Earl Jones and Billy Dee

Williams voice their characters as well.

The shows are 30 minutes long so it would seem that not much would happen, but they pack a lot in those

30 minutes with an action plot to make someone want to tune into the next episode. The flight of The Ghost

and the other imperial ships are really incredible: they remind me of seeing the Star Destroyer as it comes

across the screen the first time in Star Wars: A New Hope. The story line also helps build on what happen

between the clone war movie and when A New Hope came out. It also shows why the empire needs to be done

away with.

Check it out. I hope that since the 1st season has ended it will be on Netflix soon so I can watch it over

and over again
