HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

The Anvil, Issue 245, is the monthly newsletter of

the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The

International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms

and phrases from Star Trek are owned by

Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of

Paramount Communications and all rights are

reserved.

Greetings,

Happy New Year Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected]

XXOO BBrriieeffiinngg

Here we are aboard the starship Hephaestus, poised on the brink of a new year, full of

excitement, adventure, and... oops. Sorry, I got carried away. However, we are in a new year

full of potential, if we choose to embrace it. So in that spirit, we are considering several

changes but I’ll let MarkAdam tell you about that.

Meanwhile, here in the XO’s office, there are some ideas percolating in my brain. In

connection with one of these ideas, let me pose several questions. Would you want to live on

the Hephaestus? And would you, if you could, choose to be a different life form, i.e. a Klingon,

Vulcan, or Caitan? Or maybe you would choose to be someone from history, say a Civil War

soldier from Alabama who finds himself aboard the Hephaestus.

Since this is fiction, the sky’s the limit, so to speak (no pun intended). I have an idea for a

game that we could play at one of our socials. But for the game you need to answer the above

questions. I’ll leave it there for now. More next month.

Pat Hicks

Dec. 5, 2011 -- Business Meeting:

We discussed the success of the Fall Feast which added $45 to our treasury. That December’s social would be a game night to have a Dalmuti tournament with a prize of $25.

Pete, Starfleet’s Quarter Master, talked about the new Challenge Coin. Also he has made a deal to get 3D Star Trek poster from Rod Roddenberry for a cheaper price.

Local events for December include Model Train exhibit at McWane Center and Lights at the Zoo. Kingdom Comics will have Santa Spiderman on the 17th.

Attendance: 6 people.

Dec. 17, 2011 – Social:

We played Dalmuti with Pete winning the $25 dollar gift certificate to Books-a-Million.

Attendance: 10 people.

Personnel Updates: No personnel updates were reported.

SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,

The new Commandant's Challenge is to donate food to your local food banks. This is a challenge to all SFMC personnel and is reported on the unit reports. The OIC of the 2 BDE BGen Oliver Savander has advised that Neil Yawn has been promoted to Major General. 1 BN (Alabama) has had a few changes: The 640th MSG (Montgomery) was deactivated. The 646th MSG (Hartsel) was activated. The 5th BN now has a unit which is stationed in Cuba.

We are looking for new Marines to join the unit from the USS Hephaestus.
