On Tuesday 9 September, real estate group Harcourts Full Circle donated R10 000 to Sasonah Lodge Care Centre in Germiston. Sasonah Lodge Care Centre accommodates patients with Alzheimers and Parkinson’s disease or any other form of dementia. They have recently also opened a cancer care unit for terminally ill cancer patients. According to Simon Smith, CEO of Harcourts Full Circle, the Harcourts Foundation was launched on the back of an overwhelming response from the Harcourts franchisees wanting to make a difference in their local communities. “By assisting Sasonah Lodge Care Centre, which does so much for so many, with so little, we are upholding the Harcourts Foundation’s commitment to providing support to help, grow and enrich our communities,” Smith said.With the donation, Sasonah Lodge Care Centre will be making upgrades to the property in Germiston. “We don’t receive a subsidy from the government and sometimes we also don’t receive payments for patients, so donations like this mean a lot to us,” said Colleen Nunn, Owner and Nursing Sister at Sasonah Lodge Care Centre. Arion Bezuidenhout professional hair stylist at DNA salon recently came second in the Men’s Cut division of the Employer’s Organisation for the Hairdressing 2014 Hair Championships.The Championships were held on 1 September in an open arena at Gallagher where top stylists competed for the prize. They had 35 minutes to create a short, fashionable hairstyle before the judges started scrutinising their work. Bezuidenhout came fourth in the ladies styling division. “We were judged not only on creating a trendsetting, fashionable hairstyle, but also on the various technical aspects of a good haircut,” said Bezuidenhout. “Even colouring, cutting and styling are a must to satisfy the judges.The preparation for the Championship was quite extensive. Hours were spent on conceptualising to be able to create the perfect style. Then a model had to be found who had both the perfect face and was willing to be styled. “It is actually quite a process to do this,” explained Bezuidenhout with a smile. “Not everyone is willing to have such haute couture styling done on them.”Finally, the model’s hair has to be coloured and prepared for the final cut. All this was done in just two weeks. “It was quite hectic in the salon. Between this and preparing a portfolio for the SA Men’s Hair Championships, I was very busy.”Bezuidenhout recently heard that he is a finalist for the SA Men’s Hairstyling Championship. For this championship he has to style six models in a full stage production. “I’ve always been fond of setting my own trends instead of following set rules,” he said. “This level of conceptualising and trendsetting, I think that’s what sets a true hairstylist apart from the mundane everyday hairdresser. It’s something I enjoy doing and where I feel my true skills lie.”

Eleven mall robberies have taken place in just 25 days in the province of Gauteng. The robberies began on 13 August and the most recent one occurred on 8 September. Most of the crimes have involved armed men robbing cellphone and high-end electronics stores. The low level of security in these stores and the speed with which criminals are able to convert the stolen goods into cash has made them highly attractive targets.Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Lesetja Mothiba, said during a media briefing on 9 September, “As the Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, speaking for myself and my management, this spate of robberies and attacks on malls is of great concern to us. The festive season is soon approaching and Gauteng SAPS will increase visibility in and around some of the malls that we have identified as high risk. We have identified 12 malls where we will increase visibility, which will include the deployment of Nyalas.”A national team of detectives has been assigned to assist the local authorities with their investigations. The police have worked with Business against Crime and

South Africa Banking Risk Information Centre to attempt to stop the surge of business robberies. Meetings will be held with the management of the various malls to discuss the improvement of security systems in malls.A breakthrough has, however, been made in the police’s investigations. This followed an intense investigation and several leads from Crime Intelligence on the robberies. Four suspects, aged between 28 and 44 years, were arrested at their hideouts in Brixton and Doornfontein. During the arrest police confiscated a 9mm pistol and three semi-automatic rifles, as well as 97 live rounds of ammunition.The suspects are in custody and will be charged with the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. The possibility of more charges being added has not been ruled out. The investigation will focus on their alleged involvement in the robbery at the Black Chain Shopping Centre in Diepkloof in Soweto, ATM bombings, taxi violence and business robberies. Shoppers and businesses are encouraged to be vigilant until the safety measures can be implemented.

The Automobile Association has taken note of a South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) media statement in which SANRAL spokesperson Vusi Mona made reference to studies conducted by the AA regarding the costs of traffic congestion to the economy."The AA agrees that traffic congestion has a considerable impact on the effectiveness of the economy," the AA said. "However, the Association is concerned that reference has been made to its name and views in the context of a SANRAL press statement which promotes e-tolling, a system which the AA has consistently opposed," the AA added. "This may give rise to uncertainty over the AA's exact stance," the Association commented.In 2007, the Association was one of the

original objectors to the funding of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement System via tolling. It said that tolling increased the cost to the end user and concentrated the funding burden on a limited number of citizens. The AA said there were more equitable ways of funding roads which had low or no collection costs, such as taxation and the fuel levy."References to studies we have done or the mention of the AA’s name by SANRAL spokespeople should not be interpreted to mean that the AA has changed its stance on the issue of how best to fund the roads which need to be built to relieve congestion," the AA commented. "We wish to re-affirm that we remain opposed to e-tolling," the Association concluded.

After Irene Huysamen of Rhino SA visited Reddam House recently to share with the Prep School students the current plight of South Africa’s rhino population, the Senior Prep students presented her with a cheque for R10 480, which they had raised themselves, to support this worthy cause.The presentation created further awareness among the students, which inspired a number of Grade 4 entrepreneurs to sell stress balls, lumo bangles and confectionery to raise an additional R920 to save the rhino. A further R2 600 was raised through the sale of rhino badges, bringing Reddam’s grand total in this drive to R14 000.

In order to ensure efficiency and effective control and planning at first line management level, EMPD management has prioritized the urgent appointment of thirteen Chief Superintendents, the majority of whom will be deployed in the operations division. The appointees were promoted from within the organisation with effect from 1 September.

All the new appointees, save three, will be working in the operations division. The three have been deployed in logistics, internal prosecution and data management. Ahead of their challenging responsibilities, the new Chief Superintendents will undergo intensive training at the EMPD Academy to hone their managerial, technical and communication skills.

The SAPS East Rand Sports Club held their quarterly fun sports day at Brackendowns Policing Precint. The sports day took place at Sundowners, where SAPS teams from across the East Rand participated in a 5km or 10km fun run and some participated in the 17km fun cycle challenge. Between 100 and 120 members participated on the day.“The aim of the SAPS East Rand Sport day is to enhance

Primrose police arrested a 23-year-old suspect last Monday for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. This occurred at a tavern when an argument between two drinkers led to a bar fight. The victim reported that he asked a fellow-drinker to apologize for trampling on him, but the other man started swearing at him instead and then followed him around, saying that he was not scared of him. The victim tried to avoid him, he said, but to no avail, as his pursuer then grabbed him, strangled him and hit him in the face with a beer-bottle before taking out a sharp object and stabbing him on the upper body. A Primrose detective followed up the matter and the suspect was arrested. He appeared at the Germiston Court and the matter was postponed for plea and trial. The police would like to make an appeal to the community not to take the law into theirr own hands.

A house robbery case that occurred on 29 August 2012 in Apple Street, Primrose has been finalized, thanks to the investigating talents of Detective SGT Ngqoleka. The 27-year-old Kelvin Thabiso Manyathi was arrested, found guilty on 25 August and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment. The station commander of Primrose SAPS, Col Mduduzi Khuzwayo and his management would like to thank the detective for leaving no stone unturned when investigating this matter. “It is only through hard work and dedication this can be achieved,” he said.

Primrose police arrested two suspects, aged 33 and 36 years, for possession of dagga at Makause informal settlement on 7 September.The first incident happened while police were doing foot patrols in the informal settlement in plain clothes and a man came to a tuck-shop to buy dagga. The undercover cops watched as the unsuspecting tuck-shop worker opened a microwave oven and took out some dagga for her customer. The police then approached her and asked permission to search the premises. They found 17 ziplock plastic bags containing dagga inside the microwave.The second incident happened when the police saw three men behaving in a suspicious manner. They asked to search them and found four ziplock plastic bags containing dagga on one of them. The man in possession of the drugs was arrested. Both suspects were detained at Primrose SAPS and have since appeared at Germiston Court, where their matters were remanded for plea and trial.

Sharing our heritage

The GCIS (Government Communication and Information System) have launched the Tell Your Story Campaign to get ordinary South Africans to share their stories of what it was like growing up in apartheid South Africa, to consider what change democracy has brought – and to present a vision for the future.

This act of sharing allows South Africans a platform to talk about the pain of apartheid, their experience of democracy – and of the South Africa they would like to live in. This is important so that we can move forward as a nation that has documented its history, is aware of the sacrifices made by many South Africans to achieve this freedom – and who can create a future South Africa that all can call home.The sharing of stories has a way of nurturing, teaching and persuading change in others. South Africans from all walks of life have already begun sharing their stories.

The Acting CEO of the GCIS, Ms Phumla Williams tells of how she became politically aware, of when she was detained and leaving the country to receive military training. She explains how living in the democracy of today was worth the fight of yesteryear. “We sacrificed quite a lot of our lives as young people but when I look back I feel we have made a contribution. South Africa would not be where it is now had we not been resolute about changing the system. Have we made a difference in 20 years? Certainly we have made a dent. My kids no longer know any differences in terms of race. They see South Africans as South Africans. When I was growing up I saw South Africans as black and white. My son and my daughter went to a school that has all the basics. I’m working as a senior manager in the public service and I don’t think that would ever have been possible.”

Judge Yvonne Mokgoro: The former Constitutional Court judge from 1994 to 2009 and chair of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund tells of the difficult times faced by her and her siblings and how important education was for her. “Throughout my childhood because we were four girls my dad raised us as strong girls… He raised us to know that girls could also have an education and a profession.” Judge Mokgoro looks back at our history giving advice to the youth. “Make sure as a citizen that you play a role in helping to build your country. This is your country. You don’t have any other. You’ll be building it for yourself, your children and your children’s children. You can’t go around the world looking for another country. Ask yourself what you have contributed to building this country.”

Member of Parliament, Mr. Paul Mashatile: believes that it is our responsibility as South African citizens to give back and continue to build our nation. “Remember the heroic struggles that were waged by the people… but not only to remember but to be able to continue with that same spirit of working together as we forge ahead to build a better life for all.”

The 2014 Warrior#6 took place on 6 and 7 September at Redstone Country Estate, Hartebeespoort Dam. South Africa’s biggest obstacle race, the Jeep Warrior Race for the Brave attracts only the most adventurous competitors - men and women of steel who are fit, fast and a little crazy.Team Fight Club, a group of eight men from Bedfordview and the surrounding areas - Clint Barry, Mike Lemon, Gregg De Laney, Marcus Herbert, Paul Firth, Andrew Foster, David De Freitas, and Ronnie Seiler - completed the Rookie Race in the time of 1 hour, 36 minutes and 49 seconds. The Rookie Race is five kilometres long with 15 obstacles and has been designed to give each and every competitor the opportunity to share in the crazy fun of obstacle racing. The Rookie Race is challenging, gets competitors dirty and allows entrants to experience an overwhelming sense of achievement when they complete the race.Paul Firth, one of the Team Fight Club

members, told tame TIMES, “The most enjoyable thing about the race is that it brings people together - people with the same heart and the same purpose in mind. One of the rules for the race is you have to finish together as a team and this builds relationships and also enables everyone to have fun together.”When asked what the hardest obstacle was, he explained, “One of the obstacles requires your team to get into a pit which has gum-poles placed over the pit from left to right. The gum-poles are placed at different heights which you as a team have to get over. It becomes difficult due to the height of the poles and the loose tyres placed through the gum-poles.”There are three other categories in the Warrior Race - Warrior Bratz (1km with 8 obstacles), Commando (10km with 20 obstacles) and Black-Ops (16km with 30 obstacles). The Gauteng Cricket Umpires Association (GCUA) received their new sponsored kit on Tuesday 9 September. FLYA Sportswear, sportswear manufacturers and the new all-encompassing sportswear brand of TIME Clothing, sponsored the Umpires with kit worth R394 000 and comprises of standing shirts, standing trousers, training shorts and windbreakers. celebrating their 75th anniversary. In 1939 an Englishman, Phil Willcocks, was part of the English troops that came to South Africa. Together with South African Nico van der Westhuizen, he arranged a cricket match between the English troops and a combined South African team. Willcocks and

Van der Westhuizen were the umpires for that match. They then started the a s s o c i a t i o n , known as the T r a n s v a a l U m p i r e Assoc ia t ion , which later became the Gauteng Umpire Association. The GCUA mainly provide umpires for local cricket club matches and school cricket, but the association has also delivered key South African umpires for international matches, such as Robbie Lee from Primrose (1987 – 1999), who umpired the following matches: Holland vs Eastern, Zimbabwe vs North West and the u/19 Pakistan vs South Africa.The GCUA has two boxes at Wanderers Stadium, and is looking for sponsorship.
