Following the recent taxi violence involving rival taxi associations in which five people were killed at Windmill Park Taxi Rank, violence has erupted again next to Somhlolo Taxi Rank along Barry Marais and M C Botha Street in Vosloorus, with taxi operators barricading the road and shooting randomly to stop the police from impounding their taxis.Captain Piet Rossouw, Vosloorus SAPS spokesperson, said it is alleged that the police officers were on duty impounding illegal taxis in Boksburg and Windmill Park, as there was a conflict between Vosloorus Boksburg District Taxi Association (VBDTA) and Reiger Park Taxi Association. “The police officers managed to impound 10 illegal taxis and when they were taking them to Germiston they noticed that the road was barricaded with rocks. Police tried to remove the rocks, but there were bullets coming from the Somhlolo Taxi Rank. The police officers managed to
stop the shooting by firing warning shots and dispersing the crowd,” said Rossouw.Abel Tsotetsi, Public Relations Officer of VBDTA, said the cause of the conflict was the route for Windmill Park and East Central Road. “We have proof that we have the right to operate on those routes - it is registered in our permit. We have met with the MEC of Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, to solve the problem and we agreed that they will verify whether we are the rightful owners of the route. They will also check the licences of impounded cars and they will give us feedback,” said Tsotetsi. He added: “We pass our deepest condolence to the families of the deceased. We also apologize to the community of Vosloorus and Windmill Park for the inconvenience caused,” concluded Tsotetsi. Five people were killed in alleged taxi violence at Windmill Park taxi rank in Dawn Park, but no arrests have been made so far. It is alleged that an unknown number of suspects escaped in a blue Volvo getaway car.

This is quite an interesting fortnight, with the launch of 16 days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign. The campaign will be observed from Tuesday 25 November to 10 December to raise awareness of the negative impact that violence has on women, children and society.
Various organizations around Kathorus are hosting events in line with this campaign. We encourage community members to take part in such national activities so that they will learn, and help to reduce the escalating rate of abuse directed at women and children. Women and children are the most vulnerable to all kinds of violence and we plead with them to speak out and expose all the ills that are inflicted against them by anyone. The challenge is that women are scared to be independent and fear the unknown when they think of exposing people who are abusing them. The consequences of violence, however, are extreme and cannot be compensated for by the material things that we may gain from the people who abuse us.This fortnight we are also celebrating World AIDS Day on 1 December, when people will be educated about ways of preventing the spread of this pandemic. We are looking forward to covering all your events and making sure that we disseminate the information to the community. Enjoy reading your favourite newspaper. Cheers for now, from Charity Moyo, Editor of tame TIMES Kathorus.

By Zeb MathobelaThe community of Vosloorus together with the ANC, COSATU, SANCO and SACP members, marched to the Vosloorus Police Station to hand over a memorandum against the eviction of residents from their homes. They protesters, who were up in arms about the evictions of residents without proper documents, first gathered at the J Dumane Hall to begin the march under the watchful eyes of police officers. Bantu Thela from the SACP told tame TIMES that the state agencies gave residents one day’s notice to vacate their homes, which left the community members without alternative accommodation. He said the houses are auctioned very cheaply and residents are
being evicted with the incorrect documents. Thela said there are some people who have fully paid off their homes, but have not fetched their title deeds who are being targeted by state agencies. Resident Zodwa Gama said, “There are child-headed families whose parents passed away who are evicted because they cannot find the documents that state they are the rightful owners of the property. If the government ignores our plea to stop the evictions, we will soon embark on another march.” She added that they have been residing in Vosloorus for many years and the government is doing nothing to better their living conditions, and are just threatening people with eviction notices.

Ekurhuleni Integrated Rapid
Public Transport Network
In mid-2016 the City of Ekurhuleni will be launching an Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN)
with the aim of providing citizens with public transport that is accessible, safe, reliable and affordable. We have researched and studied the travel patterns within the City, identified the needs of communities and taken into consideration the City’s future development plans as all of these contribute to a successful public transport service. The implementation of the new services will happen in phases and we have identified what is called the Phase 1 route of the service. A Council resolution has been taken in relation to the Phase 1 route. We would like to hear your comments about this Phase 1 route.
The IRPTN will integrate new bus networks, existing bus services, revitalised rail networks, existing mini-bus taxi routes and a network of cycling paths and pedestrian walkways to help people move quickly and easily across the city.
The nature of the service
The IRPTN will use different kinds of infrastructure to ensure that a positive public transport experience is created for citizens. These involve construction of new lanes for public transport vehicles only, called dedicated bus lanes or trunk routes. Upgrading of existing roads to allow for the commuters to reach the main routes through accessing a network of complementary and feeder services. Upgrading of sidewalks and cycle paths to make life easier on foot and on a bicycle. We will also be building high quality public transport stations and stops along the route as well as pedestrian bridges.
Phase 1 Route Description
This first phase will run from Tembisa in the north to Vosloorus in the south. The route will start at Tembisa Hospital and will travel via Kempton Park CBD, OR Tambo International Airport and Boksburg, ending in Vosloorus.
The future of Ekurhuleni is an integrated one, with equal access to jobs and other basic services.

In a move that indicates how much Gauteng values its liberation heritage, the provincial government will continue to honour the heroes and heroines who played a pivotal role in building a free and democratic South Africa. The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) veteran leader, unionist and freedom fighter Mam’ Bertha Gxowa is to be honoured through a commemorative programme organized jointly by the provincial government, the City of Ekurhuleni
Municipality, and the Bertha Gxowa Foundation on Saturday 29 November. Mam’ Gxowa passed away in Johannesburg on 19 November 2010, aged 76.The day-long commemorative event will be held through a three-phase programme led by Premier David Makhura and accompanied by Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Cllr Mondli Gungubele and Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Molebatsi Bopape. “Events like the Sharpeville massacre, the Soweto uprising, the Women’s March, CODESA talks and many others are some of the game-changers towards the country’s achievement of democracy. With this in mind,
it is therefore the province’s commitment to celebrate its heroes for their efforts and sacrifices in fighting for a free and democratic South Africa”, said MEC Molebatsi Bopape. The first phase of the programme, which starts from 07:00 in the morning, will entail the official declaration of Gxowa’s grave-site at Thomas Nkobi Cemetery as a heritage site. This event is expected to be
attended by her family, senior government officials and other constituencies. The Ke-Ditselana Cultural Village in Vosloorus will thereafter host the next phase from 10:00, which will include the unveiling of a statue
of Mam’Bertha, remarks from the Bertha Gxowa Foundation, government, as well as other political and civic organizations. The commemorative event will then be
wrapped up with a Memorial Lecture at the Germiston Banquet Hall from 18:00.

As the country faces a skills crisis due to illiteracy, the Children’s disABILITY Training Centre (CdTC) is piloting a reading skills revolution for learners with disabilities at Sipho Sethu Special School in Vosloorus - so that the nation can benefit from their rich untapped skills. Pupils at the school are optimistic about the initiative and eager to learn how to read. They are taught how to pronounce words, vowels and other letters and to work through various activities, such as pasting words together with glue. They enjoy reading and enthusiastically show how they can remember the words just by looking at them. Speaking to tame TIMES, Vivienne Van Staden, educator and psychologist from CdTC, said they are training educators at the school on Wednesdays to teach the pupils with special needs to read. On Mondays they help teachers implement what they have taught them in the classroom. “We are teaching pupils how to read using all
their senses; it is a reading approach which strengthens the brain in remembering what they have been taught. We have accessed the pupils and divided them into groups that suit their needs. Reading is a skill for a better future - if a child is illiterate they have limited opportunities in life,” said Van Staden. She added that they want to raise literacy levels at the school and that a lack of reading books is also a challenge at the school. Gloria Setshedi, principal of Sipho Sethu Special School said, “I am very impressed with the progress of pupils - in terms of reading there is a tremendous change. The Department of Education is still struggling to get a curriculum, but with CdTC here they are helping the pupils a lot. We appreciate what they are doing for pupils and educators.” The programme will soon be rolled out to other special schools in Vosloorus, Daveyton, Soweto and Alexandra that receive CdTC assistance. CdTC receives no government funding.

The 2015 African Cup of Nations finals was initially supposed to be held in Morocco but due to their fear of the escalating Ebola pandemic, the authorities in that country withdrew from hosting the event and Equatorial Guinea finally stepped in as the new host of one of Africa’s most prestigious events. The road to the finals was challenging, but encouraging - for the first time in many years Group A winner South Africa amassed 12 points after playing their final match 2-2 with Nigeria, while Congo finished second on 10 points after playing to a 1-0 win in Sudan. In Group B, dominant Algeria finished top with 15 points, with Mali in second place on nine. The group C winner Gabon ended unbeaten on 12 points, with Burkina Faso the runner-up on 11 points. Cameroon finished their campaign undefeated and was crowned Group D winner after playing a dull 0-0 draw
with Ivory Coast, which finished 2nd on 10 points. Ghana topped the Group E pool with 11 points after a 3-1 victory over Togo in their final qualifier, while Guinea earned the second spot after defeating Uganda 2-0. In Group F, Cape Verde Islands and Zambia qualified with 12 and 11 points respectively, while in Group G, Tunisia on 14 and Senegal on 13 qualified - as Egypt were unable to get the results they needed to qualify as the 3rd-best-placed team. That honour went to DR Congo, which finished on 9 points in Cameroon and Ivory Coast’s Group D to complete the
pool of 16 teams in Equatorial Guinea – who qualify as hosts next year.
The draw for the tournament will be done on 3 December.
