Celebrating 20 years of HIV-positive livingAn extraordinary woman who has survived many trials and tribulations, Mpho Mazamane, recently celebrated her 40th birthday and 20 years of HIV-positive living at her home in Paradise Park in Vosloorus.Mpho has withstood many storms. At the age of 15 she was gang-raped by nine boys, but tested afterwards for HIV and found to be HIV-negative. She survived the rape and went through counselling. When she was 18 years old, she married an abusive man whom she later divorced. At the age of 20 she was married again - to a man who infected her with HIV, although it was only a week before his death that her late second husband

confessed to her that he had been HIV-positive when he married her. “When I was pregnant with his baby and went for a check-up, it was confirmed that I was HIV-positive. I gave birth to an HIV-negative baby boy, but I was in a state of denial and was rejected by my family. So I ended up staying on the street. I attempted to commit suicide several times and went to live at Nkosi’s Haven in Berea - a place for HIV-positive and destitute mothers,” said Mpho.Through counselling, Mpho told tame TIMES, she managed to pull herself together and started motivating people with HIV. In 1998 she was given the Best HIV and

AIDS Educator of the Year award. “I marketed myself as an HIV motivational speaker and companies contracted me. In 2003 I met my present husband who is HIV-negative, I told him about my status and we have been living happily together for 12 years. We have two children who are HIV-negative. We practise safe sex and conducted artificial insemination when we wanted children.”Mpho added that she is not on antiretroviral drugs. “I believe that talking about HIV and breaking the silence heals. I look after myself. HIV alone does not kill but it invites other opportunistic infections to kill.” In 2007 she started a centre

called Onkabetse Care Centre in Vosloorus that is taking care of 105 children who are rape victims, HIV-positive or from child-headed families. Her family, relatives and friends who attended the party described her as a person with a bubbly personality and an inspiration to other women. Her husband Tony Mazamane said he married her knowing her status and was charmed by her honesty. He encouraged other men to get tested and said that a positive-and-negative couple can live together happily.

Roadshow to educate community on legal matters

Kathorus Legal Advice and Referral Clinic (KLARC) will be hosting a community outreach/roadshow on 18 September at Vosloorus Poly Clinic.The event will run from 9:00 to 15:00. The objective of the community outreach is to provide the public with information regarding many issues affecting their daily lives, such as legal services.Invited stakeholders include the Department of Land Affairs and Rural Development, which will attend to issues pertaining to the re-opening of the Land Restitution period and title deeds matters. The Legal Aid Board of South Africa will also be present to inform and educate the public on the Legal Aid’s mandate and the process used to implement it. They will provide information, as well, about the affordability criteria used when providing

legal aid to indigent community members.KLARC has also requested Gauteng Provincial Economic Development (GPED), accompanied by the Financial Services Board (FSB) to be present. Issues related to consumer rights education and matters with regard to dealing with authorized financial service providers and pension funds will be handled. Representatives from the various departments will also attend to queries arising from the public. The event is open to vendors and businesses wanting to advertise and sell their products. The stalls are available for R300 per business. The newly built Natalspruit Hospital in Vosloorus, which is due to be officially opened today, welcomed its first baby on 20 August.The bouncing baby boy was delivered at 08:50 at the new facility, weighing 3, 95kg. Mother Nonzwakazi Msindo, who is from Palm Ridge, was relocated with other patients from the old hospital to the new facility in Vosloorus.Holding her bundle of joy Msindo said, “When MEC Mahlangu said this is a state-of-the art hospital she was not exaggerating. This is a beautiful facility and I am honoured that my son, Mohamed, is the first baby to be born in the hospital. This is an historic moment for both of us. The relocation was smooth with no hassles. I would like to thank all the staff members who helped me with the delivery of my baby.”

Acting hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr Patricia Africa commended the maternity ward staff who delivered the baby. “While we are still settling in, our staff are seeing patients - this birth bears testimony to that. I take my hat off to the maternity ward personnel for the swift delivery of this baby. This is the beginning of a new era in terms of service delivery for the community,” said Dr Africa.“As you would know, moving house is quite a complex process, so we plead with the community to bear with us until we have settled down, but we will not turn any patients away,” she added.The newly built 821-bed regional hospital offers services such as: Family Medicine, 24 Hour Casualty, Speech and Language Therapy, Ophthalmology, Radiography and Eye Nose and Throat Clinic.

Which stakeholders were consulted about the demolition and on what basis did they agree to the decision to demolish the Natalspruit Hospital?2. Is there any form of transport arrangement for the unemployed families of sick patients so that they can travel to see them at the new hospital?3. There are many home-based care organisations that operate under unhealthy, if not poor, environments. Could the old building not be used by such organisations?

Long walk to women’s freedomAs the women of South Africa celebrate 20 years of democracy, Mandisa Sithole from Leondale Gardens still feels that there is nothing for women to celebrate as they continue to be physically, emotionally, spiritually and financially abused by men in relationships.“Abuse is still a challenge that women are faced with daily. In most cases men don’t appreciate the role women play in relationships. There are men who are blood-suckers, depending on women financially and also physically beating them for their hard-earned money,” said Sithole. She added that it is very common for men to cohabit (vat-en-sit) with women for many years without paying lobola. Sithole said marriage is every woman’s dream and they are scared to ask men when they will marry them in case they are seen as being too forward. She said cohabitation also affects women spiritually and emotionally.“Women should learn not to settle for less - if the relationship has not progressed, they should leave and move on. They should not accept cohabitation and remain silent about abuse because they fear the end of the relationship. There are women who are also scared to leave abusive relationships because of their children. Women should learn that their happiness should come first; and that, if one door closes, another one will

open. They will find someone who will appreciate them and take care of them,” said Sithole.She also appealed to men to treat women with the love and dignity that they deserve. “A woman is a human being who truly loves deeply and has a fragile heart. Women are like gold - they are an inspiration; advisers and men cannot progress without a women’s support,” she said.Sithole added, “Mothers play a crucial role in our lives and girls should respect them. They stood with us through good and bad times. As young ladies we will also grow up and experience the challenges that they (mothers) once faced if we don’t change the social ills affecting them,” concluded Sithole.Our Vosloorus diva is a student at Ekurhuleni West College Kathorus Campus and currently studying Engineering Related Design Level 4. Women inspired to dream bigAs part of celebrating Women’s Month, various stakeholders gathered at Vosloorus Civic Centre during the month of August to motivate and inspire women in economic and social matters.Sergeant Sibongile Mambane of Vosloorus Police Station Social Crime Prevention said, “We invited women from different organisations to celebrate Women’s Day by motivating each other to start small businesses. We are encouraging women to come forward and report domestic violence, not to hide their abuse. We are also urging them to join support groups and other organisations for support and motivation.”Gertrude Tumelo Khara, a member of Kathorus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), explained to women how her organisation assists small businesses in the area. She said they mentor them, conduct workshops for them and assist with business plans. Khara motivated women to be innovative, creative and to bring fresh ideas for starting small businesses.Local businesswoman Nhlanhla “Ntsakantsaka” Zitha shared her business history, inspiring other women to start small in business. A former street vendor who used to sell vegetables and contribute to stokvels, she now runs a successful pub and restaurant in Vosloorus. “Women should learn to be independent and start small businesses to sustain themselves. Starting a business does not take large sums of money

and big loans - l started small. The secret to running a successful business is customer care, cleanliness and a good approach.”The event was organised by Vosloorus Police Station Social Crime Prevention and Victim Empowerment Centre, in conjunction with Kathorus Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Help police identify wanted suspect A 32-year-old male suspect is wanted by Vosloorus Police Detectives for fraud.According to Detective Sergeant Stanley Hlongwane, after seeing an advertisement for a Toyota Venture for R30 000 on the OLX website, the complainant called the suspect, who was selling the car. The suspect demanded a deposit of R10 000 to hold the car and gave him bank account details.The complainant deposited the money as asked. The two were then supposed to meet after two days once bank clearance had taken place, so that the complainant could collect the car, but the suspect did not arrive for the appointment.The complainant is from Vosloorus and the suspect, from Sunset View in Pretoria. The complainant later realised that the seller had defrauded him and opened a case at Vosloorus Police Station on 28 December 2013. “We managed to speak to the suspect via his cellphone and he said that he was prepared to pay the money back. He is still at large even now,” said Detective Sergeant Hlongwane. He added that a warrant of arrest was issued to the suspect on 21 February this year. Detective Hlongwane warned the public to be vigilant when responding to advertisements and not to pay large sums of money before receiving the

items they want to purchase. Citizens should also verify if businesses are legitimate before dealing with them, said Hlongwane. Anyone who has seen the suspect or has information on his whereabouts should contact Detective Sergeant Hlongwane on 082 972 5401 or 011 724 1033.

Officers from Katlehong Cluster Police Stations, namely Dawn Park, Vosloorus, Zonkizizwe, Eden Park, Thokoza, Katlehong North and Katlehong arrested 59 suspects from 15 to 17 August for various offences. The suspects were arrested during daily stop-and-search operations conducted by crime prevention members for the following crimes: house-breaking and theft, robbery and armed robbery, assault, serious assault, unlawful possession of firearm and ammunitions, murder, traffic offences, and shoplifting.Other suspects were arrested for possession of dagga, drinking liquor in public and for the suspicion of illegal immigration. The police officers seized a 9mm pistol and six rounds of ammunition during the weekend operations.

Kellogg’s provides learners with breakfastIn celebration of Women’s Month, staff members from the Kellogg’s factory plant visited Thabang Primary School in Vosloorus to have breakfast with the learners and their mothers. They also worked together with parents and learners in building a living garden wall for the community, to encourage sustainable

healthy living. The Women’s Month activity was aimed at empowering women, learners and their community as part of the Kellogg’s Breakfast for Better Days Initiative, which has committed to serving over five million breakfasts to thousands of children.

Face of Eastrand workshop empowers ladiesThe Top Notch Event Company recently hosted a workshop at Park Joint in Katlehong in a bid to empower ladies and mobilise support for the Face of East Rand Beauty Pageant to be held on 11 October. However, the event organisers have not yet confirmed the venue. Twenty-five beautiful ladies converged on Park Joint to be part of the workshop. According to Top Notch Event Company Chief Operating Officer (COO), Abongile Dubaduba, the positive message they sent out on the day is that “Ekurhuleni young ladies should always remember

Call for fashion designers to showcase talents In an effort to increase brand exposure for local emerging fashion talent and businesses, MF Skills Company is inviting all local fashion designers to come and showcase their products at the first annual Ekurhuleni Street Fashion Show.The event will be held at Hurricanes in Katlehong on 5 October. Models will start strutting their stuff on the red carpet from 13:00 and the show, which will provide a platform for the work of local young fashion designers, is set to begin at 14:00. In what promises to be a glittering event, the street fashion show is expected to attract the elite of the Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg fashion scenes. MF Skills Company Fashion Show producer, Nomfundo Nkosi, told tame TIMES, “I have high expectations for this show. We are anticipating trendy, fierce, high fashion, over the top designs on the runway and outfits from people in attendance. Hip Hop music show to rock ekasi

A Kathorus based music movement will be hosting the inaugural K1 Hip Hop Assembly Music Show Down on 7 September at Lakoya Butchery next to Sunrise Taxi Rank. The event is the brainchild of the K1 Hip Hop Assembly and is aimed at promoting the music genre at grassroots level in Kathorus. Speaking to tame TIMES, K1 Hip Hop Assembly spokesperson Mduduzi “Blaqshakes” Simelani cited that the event aimed at giving emerging Kathorus artists an opportunity to showcase their singing talent. “We want to have a hand in nurturing and building the careers of grassroots artists who are still aspiring to enter into the mainstream music industry. K1 Hip Hop want to remind township residents that music is a necessity in their daily lives. It is because of their love of music that the movement will be hosting a Hip Hop music show to entertain and educate hip hop music lovers,” said Simelani. Budding artists who will be performing at the event include Timeless Talent, Kasi Born Sneazy, Pro T and many more. Local dancers are also invited to showcase their talent on the day. A group of 10 teenage boys from Kathorus who believe that their disadvantaged background should not determine their altitude in life are rolling up their sleeves and showcasing their tumbling talent despite a lack of sporting facilities.It is because of their strong self-belief and positive attitudes that they established a gymnastics club three years ago. The members of the group include: Vusi Mazibuko, Mduduzi Khanye, Tshepo Matshoyi, Thulani Nkosi, Musa Mkhonza, Katlego Mogotsi, Mogomutsi Mokoena, Sihle Mazibuko, Mpho Mokoena and Senzo Moloi. “We did not want to wait for sponsorship to be dropped on our doorsteps before we could embark on our journey to stardom. We do not have training equipment and sporting kit, but that is not a hindrance. We are practising tumbling after school and during lunch hour in our school. I am impressed by the level of commitment demonstrated by my colleagues since starting the team three years ago. The dramatic increase in their confidence levels indicates that we are moving in the right direction,” said Mazibuko.Their mission is to represent South Africa in continental and international gymnastic competitions in the near future. However, for them to realise their dream, they need sponsorship, sporting kit and a dedicated gymnastic instructor to help them on their road to stardom. “South Africa’s youth is blessed with talent. These youngsters
