Havre-ing the Time of Their Lives... Havre de Grace spent most of a very successfulsophomore season playing second fiddle to Blind Luck(Pollard=s Vision), dropping narrow decisions to theCalifornia-based runner in the GII Delaware Oaks lastJuly and in the GI Alabama S. the following monthbefore exacting her revenge when in receipt of 10pounds in the GII Fitz Dixon Cotillion S. She closed hercampaign with a third--a length behind Blind Luck--inthe GI Breeders= Cup Ladies= Classic and settled for thesilver medal in Eclipse Award balloting. She returned this term in the capable hands of trainerLarry Jones and fired two monster shots at OaklawnPark, first defeating Blind Luck on the square in the GIII Azeri S. in March and then Switch (Quiet American)in the GI Apple Blossom H. in April. Her 2 1/4-lengthwin over Tiz Miz Sue (Tiznow) in the GIII Obeah S. atDelaware June 11 was little more than a walk in thepark and set the table for a sixth encounter with BlindLuck in the GII Delaware H. July 16. She wasconfidently handledBperhaps a bit too confidently--andopened daylight into the stretch, but she could notultimately resist the rally of Blind Luck and settled for anose defeat.

Havre de Grace jumped alertly, but it was Rule whowon the break and was joined to his outside byConvocation (Pulpit), hanging the filly at least threewide as they raced into the first turn. The WinStarrunner took them up the backstretch through a half-milein :48.09, while Havre de Grace was still forced to do ittougher while stalking from a close-up third. RamonDominguez began to get to work on the filly leaving thethree-eighths marker and she ranged up outside MissionImpazible (Unbridled=s Song) to put pressure on thefront runner as heads were turned for home.Dominguez cracked the filly one time with the whipturned down as they cornered, then switched to a left-handed stick as they drew ever closer to Rule. Sheovertook that one entering the final furlong and ran outa fairly easy winner. Flat Out followed the move ofHavre de Grace around the final turn, but couldn=t quitemuster the necessary close. AI felt pretty good at the three-eighths pole when wewere coming and I wasn=t seeing anyone making a hugemove,@ winning trainer Larry Jones commented. AI kepttelling myself with Flat Out picking up nine poundsfrom his last race, it had to start telling on himsomewhere. About the sixteenth pole he startedleveling off and stopped chasing us. We felt prettygood it was going our way.@ Jones said that he was>75% sure= Havre de Grace would run next in the GI Beldame S. at Belmont Oct. 1. From there, adecision would be made on the filly=s Breeders= Cupstatus, with the most likely scenario being an entry inboth the GI Ladies= Classic and GI Classic, according toowner Rick Porter.

Video, courtesy attheraces.com. This contest, inaugurated in 1976 and run at PhoenixPark for a spell, really started to emerge as a leadingstaging post on the international calendar from the late1990s and has subsequently boasted some seriousshowdowns. Fantastic Light versus Galileo (Ire) andDylan Thomas (Ire) against Ouija Board (GB) are justtwo of the recent clashes witnessed at Foxrock, andthis year=s edition threatened to be substandard withjust three rivals from outside Ballydoyle and only one ofthose with a success at the top level. So You Think=sposition among the best that his stable had run in thiscontest was secured with a latest defeat of Workforce(GB) (King=s Best) when that rival was on one of hisgoing days in the Eclipse. Whether his prior defeat byRewilding (GB) (Tiger Hill {Ire}) in the G1 Prince ofWales=s S. at Royal Ascot June 15 was a fair reflectionof his merit is debatable, but it showed a vulnerabilitythat was unexpected after all his Australian conquestsand all the talk that accompanied his move to Europe.

Snow Fairy has been upstaged by the likes of Midday(GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) on more than one occasion, sowhile she is not in the Ouija Board category yet, herpresence in this line-upensured there would be nosaunter around for thefavorite as there had beenon his first two starts thisterm in The Curragh=s May2 G3 Mooresbridge S. andMay 22 G1 TattersallsGold Cup. After a textbookfirst mile racing off anideal tempo set by hisClassic-winning stablecompanion RodericO=Connor, So You Think was allowed no breathingspace by the filly as soon as he was committed bySeamie Heffernan. For a few yards there were shadesof Rewilding about her determined charge, but the longodds-on choice dug deep to maintain his advantage anddeny the upset. AHe is getting more uncomplicated andidled a bit in front and gave a blow,@ Heffernan offered.AWhen you are on him, you are on the king of the road.Settling him was going to be a bit of a problem, but Iwas confident I could do that after the Eclipse. Whenhe settles, he=d go over any trip.@ With the IrishChampion in the bag as expected, Coolmore=s JohnMagnier reflected on possible targets and gave a clearindication that a tilt at another Cox Plate was off theagenda. AYou never say never, but it=s not imminent,@Magnier said of a possible return to So You Think=s oldstomping ground. AHe=s the kind of horse who spoilsyou for options, so what we=ll do I don=t know. Hecould run in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. or G1Champion S. [at Ascot Oct. 15], or the [Oct. 2] Arc. Itwill be one of those I guess, but we are not going torush into a decision. He=s a good horse, Snow Fairy is agood filly, and it was a good race. He=s no different towhat he was in Australia--we just wanted people uphere to see what he was like, and it makes him a realdual-hemisphere horse, so he=s a rare type. Royal Ascotwasn=t one of our best days, but other than that, thishorse=s record is there for everyone to see.@

Betfred Sprint Cup cont.

Dream Ahead=s raw talent has been clear to the eyefrom the first day he set foot on the track, but alongwith that was the similarly compelling evidence that hewas far from straightforward. As erratic as he wasimpressive when streaking to a nine-length success ondebut in a six-furlong Nottingham maiden on debut lastJuly, he went west when in the clear in both the G1Prix Morny at Deauville and G1 Middle Park S. atNewmarket on his next two starts. It was the fact thathe could run off a true line and still register anine-length verdict over the G2 Coventry S. winnerStrong Suit (Rahy) in the latter contest that persuadedthe international handicappers to place him alongsideFrankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). That decision attractedmuch derision from the press and public, as he hadfaded out of the picture behind the brilliant Juddmonterepresentative in the G1 Dewhurst S. in a first careerdefeat, but connections had put that down to the racecoming up too quick after the Middle Park. He repeatedthat fifth placing behind his mighty generation leader inthe G1 St James=s Palace S. at Royal Ascot June 14,but again the excuses came up as he was trying a milewhich stretched him and was having his first start ofthe term. Under the skilled handling of first-time pilotHayley Turner, he waltzed through the July 9 G1 JulyCup with such presence that the sprint championshiplooked already wrapped up and tied with a bow, but itall unraveled with William Buick back aboard on hisreturn visit to Deauville for the G1 Prix Maurice deGheest. Interfered with and crowded early on there, theimposing colt downed tools and was subsequentlyplaced close to the front end throughout the earlystages of this contest. Left in the clear passing thequarter pole, he was joined shortly after by BatedBreath, but his aversion to the whip sacrificed preciousground and Hoof It was hitting top stride in behindunder Graham Gibbons. As he veered left inside thefinal 150 yards, Hoof It was forced to go the long wayaround, which undoubtedly cost him the race, but as hewas eventually third, the stewards had little option thanto let the result stand. AHe is a hard horse to judge, andif he=d lost, I would have said he threw it away as hewasn=t doing a tap in front and was running around,@Buick explained. AIt was a very good trainingperformance from David [Simcock] and the team to gethim back from that disappointing effort last time.@Added Simcock, AIt is a massive relief after France, aswe thought we had him in great form for that race andso were scratching our heads. We rode him far morepositively, and he battled very well and did everythingwell. It is very special for him to enhance his reputationand it means as much as the July Cup, as he wasbouncing back.@ He added that the Oct. 2 G1 Prix de laForet at Longchamp or Ascot=s G2 British ChampionsSprint S. Oct. 15 were the remaining options this term, with the Breeders= Cup possibly on the agenda in 2012.

Atlantic Hurricane began her career last year inFlorida for conditioner Robert Hale, securing two winsand a second from seven attempts with a sixth-placefinish in her only stakes try. Owners Calypso Stable andRousseau Racing shipped their runner up to Canada andhanded the reins over to Michael Silvera this term, andshe was second for a $40,000 tag over track and tripMay 22. Silvera moved the chestnut back to the turffor the same claiming price June 10, and she scored by 4 1/2 lengths, but was scooped up by theseconnections. She took $60,000 optional claimers overthe sod here July 3 and July 31, and was backed downa bit from her 8-1 morning line while jumping into thedeep end in search of her fourth-straight victory.Atlantic Hurricane and heavily favored J “TDN RisingStar” J Embur=s Song, who herself was looking tostring together five wins, quickly opened up a clear leadon the rest of the field from their outside stalls. EmileRamsammy and Atlantic Hurricane, the outside half ofthe dueling duo, refused to blink, forcing PatrickHusbands on the fancied three-time graded stakeswinner to cave and concede the advantage. AtlanticHurricane took a two-length lead while carving outsplits of :22.85 and :46.14, but Embur=s Song soonpunched back to regain the lead entering the turn. Theyexchanged blows from that point on, and a game anddetermined Atlantic Hurricane refused to forefeit thelead in the straight in a very gutsy effort. AShe=s beentraining unconsciously into the race and she ran like weexpected her to,@ said Ramsammy. AToday, she wasgood as she can be.@ On what prompted him to go infor the claim, trainer Stuart Simon said, AQuite a few ofthose Florida turf horses seem to be doing well here, and we thought maybe if she would mature on shecould work out to be a good horse. She=s a high-strungfilly. She=s got a bit of an edge to her, but those goodones have that.@

Said winning trainer Roberto Bullrich, ASince I wonthe 1996 [renewal] with Refinado Tom (Arg) (ShyTom), I dreamt of coming back to celebrate again in thePolla de Potrillos. And, fortunately, now the dream hasbecome a reality.@ Refinado Tom was the last colt towin the Argentinian Triple Crown. The other two legsare the G1 Jockey Club and the G1 Nacional-ArgentineDerby. Fulton said the win more than made up for thedisappointment in the Clasico Miguel Cane. "In theCane, Chuck Berry left us baffled, because we did notexpect to run so bad. But it appeared a little problem,so I knew he could win today.@ Chuck Berry was bredby Hernan Ceriani Cernada's Haras La Quebrada.

After graduating infront-running style at ChurchillJuly 4, the dark bay showed arating gear in the Schuylerville, atrait that could serve her well inthis event, especially with atouch more distance. Now, we=ve got good spacing.@True Feelings debuted a popular winner for her topconnections at Delaware Park June 27, but wastrapped out five deep for two-thirds of the Schuylervilleand was getting to the winner late. Lady Pecan is thisfield=s wild card. Well beaten when fifth in a Woodbinemaiden special July 23, she dropped in for a $62,500tag and bolted up by 8 1/4 lengths, earning a figureequal to that of Georgie=s Angel in her debut. Thateffort encouraged Kaleem Shah to open his wallet andshe tries the deepest of waters in her first start for theHall of Famer Bob Baffert. Judy the Beauty is perfect inthree starts, with wins at Keeneland, Deauville and afirst black-type score last time out at Woodbine. LIVING THE DREAM Danedream enters today=s G1 Grosser Preis vonBaden clearly best on ratings following her emphaticsuccess in Hoppegarten=s G1 Deutschland-Preis overthis trip last time July 24 and will be hard to suppress ifshe can reproduce that form. Her five-length defeat oflast year=s Horse of the Year Scalo (Ger) (Lando {Ger})in Berlin, with Night Magic back in fourth, added to herprevious 6 1/2-length success in the G2 Oaks d=Italiaover 11 furlongs at the San Siro May 29. She was alsothird in the G2 Derby Italiano at the Capannelle May 7,and her close-up fifth under a five-pound penalty in theG2 Prix de Malleret at Saint-Cloud June 26 was not areflection of her true ability as she was given too muchto do behind the enterprisingly-ridden Testosterone (Ire)(Dansili {GB}). Trainer Peter Schiergen is contemplatinga tilt at the GI BC F/M Turf. He told PA Sport, AShe=s invery good form, she has looked very good in themornings and she=s taking her races much better. Ifeverything was to go well this weekend, we may lookat races in America for her or Ascot. The Breeders= Cupis an option, but we=ll look after the race. The smallfield is not a worry, as she is easy to ride.@ In recenttimes, five winners of the G1 Deutsches Derby havegone on to success here and the most recent winner ofthat Hamburg Classic Waldpark bids to follow in thesteps of Mondrian (Ger), Lando (Ger), Borgia (Ger)(Acatenango {Ger}), Samum (Ger) and his son Kamsin(Ger). He lost his unbeaten tag when sixth in Deauville=sG2 Prix Guillaume d=Ornano over 10 furlongs last timeAug. 15 and needs to get back on track. Last year=swinner Night Magic is unbeaten in three outings hereand confirmed her love for this circuit when beatingRussian Tango (Ger) (Tertullian) and the subsequent G1Grosser Dallmayr-Preis winner Durban Thunder (Ger)(Samum {Ger}) in the June 5 G2 Grosser Preis derBadischen Unternehmen prior to her latest fourthbehind Danedream. Joshua Tree, who took the GICanadian International when trained by Aidan O=Brien in2010, was runner-up in a 10-furlong conditions eventat Newmarket on his return to Europe Aug. 13. AThiswill be his second start for us, having run a solid preprace when second at Newmarket three weeks ago,@said trainer Marco Botti. AWe are very hopeful of a bigrun this weekend.@

RUBBER MATCH IN BOSPHORUS CUP This year=s renewal features the last two winners inHalicarnassus and Indian Days, who form part of astrong overseas challenge. Indian Days was impressivewhen putting the proven top-level performer Sri Putra(GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) firmly in his place 12 monthsago, but comes here on the back of three off-the-boardefforts and had only the re-opposing Campanologistbehind when trailing in the G3 Glorious S. at Goodwoodlast time July 29. Afsare may be capable of moreimprovement, having raced too freely whendead-heating for second with Cavalryman (GB) (Halling)behind the subsequent G2 Grand Prix de Deauvillewinner Jukebox Jury (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) inNewmarket=s Listed Fred Archer S. June 25 and when alatest fourth in that track=s G2 Princess of Wales=s S.July 7. AAfsare runs more for the money than theprestige, as it looks rather a soft race for the grade andthe prizemoney is too good to ignore,@ trainer LucaCumani explained. AHe wears blinkers for the first time, having worked well in them recently at home.@Campanologist would have every chance if able toregain the form of his second to So You Think (NZ)(High Chaparral {Ire}) in The Curragh=s G1 TattersallsGold Cup May 22, but his poor recent efforts cast adoubt over the ability he retains.
