AI just loved the family, and she is a nice big mare andI loved the weanling,@ Hancock continued. AHer first foalwas a More Than Ready that Shadwell bought that isgoing to have a good chance to do something.@ Of the final price, Hancock said, AIt was way toomuch money, but we wanted her.@ Hancock acknowledged he admired the breedingoperation that Ned Evans had assembled.

ANed Evans would do it like Iwould like to try to do it,@ Hancocksaid. AHe kept his broodmare bandculled down and he bred his maresto the right kind of stallions. Heraced them and he loved them. Ithought he was a lot like us and Iam happy to have something fromhis best family.@ The Ned Evans dispersal hasnow become the highest grossingdispersal in Keeneland history.Through the first three days of theNovember sale, 101 lots have soldfor $49,669,500 and an average

Tapit Weanling Ignites Bidding War... Ireland=s Team Coolmore outbid American bloodstockagent John Moynihan for the rights to a chestnutweanling filly by Tapit (hip 783) at Keeneland onWednesday. The $700,000 price was the highest for aweanling on the day. Bred in Kentucky by John Antonelli, the Tapit filly isout of Piedras Negras (Unbridled).Piedras Negras= first foal was thebrilliant Johannesburg filly La Traviata, whom Coolmore bought for $1.1million at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton Caldersale. La Traviata won her first three starts, including the GIII Victory Ride S., andwas the favorite in the 2007 Breeders=Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. She finishedsixth in the Breeders= Cup and neverraced again because of injury. ALa Traviata was a very fast filly, andshe was just unlucky with whathappened to her,@ said Coolmore=s M. V. Magnier. ADemi [O=Byrne] andPaul [Shanahan] loved this Tapit filly, and we bought her to race.@ Magnier added, ALa Traviata has a Henrythenavigatorthat=s going to Ballydoyle, and it=s one of the finestaround.@

The Tapit filly was consigned by Three ChimneysSales, agent for John and Marsha Antonelli. -Pete Denk

Piedras Negras Rewards Antonelli Again... John Antonelli and his wife Marsha, California-basedcommercial breeders, picked up the mare PiedrasNegras (Unbridled), in foal to Johannesburg, for

$95,000 out of the 2003 KeenelandNovember sale. The mare=s in utero foalwas La Traviata. Though Marsha Antonelli passedaway in September, her husband wasable to enjoy the mare=s successyesterday. AI spoke with John and he is thrilledwith the sale,@ said Three Chimneys=Case Clay. AAnd Coolmore has hadtremendous success from La Traviata,so we wish them the best of luck.@ Of the price, Clay said, AWe weren=texpecting that, but when it comesdown to two people who love a horseand want it, they are going to bid.@ Clay added, AShe was all class and a

lovely mover. She stood in the sales ring a long timeand didn=t bat an eye.@ KEENOV coverage cont. p5

Evans Carries on the Family Tradition... Shel Evans was finally able to secure a broodmarefrom the disperal of his brother=s Spring Hill Farm, bidding $620,000 for Minishaft (Mineshaft--Minidar, byAlydar). AThat=s the first full-sized one I=ve been able toafford,@ Evans said shortly after signing the ticket onthe 5-year-old mare, (hip 746), in foal to Tale of the

Cat. AI=ve bought some of theweanlings, but those full-sizedones are expensive.@ Minishaft is a half-sister tograded stakes winner A LittleWarm (Stormin Fever), and tothe dam of graded stakes winnerMini Sermon (Pulpit). Asked what attracted him tothe gray mare, Evans admitted,AI actually got on her because Ithought she=d be relativelycheap. That turned out to not be

the case, but I was kind of tired of finishing second.Compared to some of them, she was relatively cheap.@ While Minishaft is the first broodmare from thedispersal of his late brother=s breeding stock that Evanshas acquired, he has purchased four weanlings, including a filly by Lemon Drop Kid out of ChristmasGift (Green Desert) (hip 75) for $700,000. Thatweanling=s full-sister, Christmas Kid, sold for $4.2million Monday. Shel Evans, chairman of the board of the industrialmanufacturing Crane Company, owns Courtland Farmin Easton, Maryland. He has campaigned Grade Iwinners Sewickley and Shared Interest, as well asgraded stakes winners Marsh Side and New Normal. Evans admitted it was hard to watch his brother=sThoroughbred empire go through the Keeneland salesring. AIt=s very, very hard,@ he said. AWe first came toKeeneland in 1965 to the summer sale and we boughtsome mares in partnership. We were kids. We=ve bothbeen in it a long time. It is hard to lose him. He was aninspiration to me in an awful lot of ways.@ Still the dispersal of Spring Hill Farm has proven afitting tribute to Ned Evans, with 12 lots attractingseven figures already at Keeneland November. AMy brother was magic,@ Evans said. AYou can seethat at the sale here. It=s amazing what heaccomplished. That=s been verified in the last few daysand there is still a lot more to go. AHe was probably one of the smartest people I knewand people who went to school with him and knew himknew that,@ he continued. AHe did an incredible jobrunning Macmillan [publishing group]. And when hestopped doing that, he put most of his efforts into theThoroughbred business. You take a guy with somemoney and some brains like he had and put them in theThoroughbred business, they can make it successful. Itwas a lifelong work for him.@ -JM

Hit Me: Tiznow Mare Brings Session-Topping $410k... The 4-year-old mare Tizahit (Tiznow--Never a NoHitter, by Kris S.), selling on a Feb. 20 cover to IndianCharlie, was hammered down to Blue Devil Racing for$410,000 to star during the early stages of

Wednesday=ssession. MargauxFarm LLC soldTizahit as hip 491on behalf of thehusband-and-wifeteam thatcampaigned her,Jim and SusanHill. The Hills, basedin Alberta,Canada, purchased Tizahit

for $185,000 at the 2008 Keeneland September Sale.Put into training with George Weaver, the fillyregistered her biggest win in the following year=s GIIDemoiselle S. at Aqueduct. She was retired at the endof last season with a record of 10-2-2-1 and earningsof $195,307. AWe first got her last fall, and thought she was veryattractive,@ saidMargaux GeneralManager JonCarpenter. AShe=s abig, tall mare with areal nice body.@ Tizahit had somefamily, too. Hersecond dam isMGSW Jeano(Fappiano), also thesecond dam ofchampion andGrade I winner Folklore, another daughter of Tiznow. The Hills didn=t make the trip down from Canada towatch Tizahit sell, but were reportedly pleased with theresults. AWe didn=t quite expect her to go as high as shedid; we were pleasantly surprised,@ said Carpenter, whocorrected himself, AWell, going into the sale, we weren=texpecting that. But after all the action she got, wewere pretty confident we could reach what wereached.@ -LM

It’s Elementary for Holmes... In just over an hour, Tony Holmes was representedby five horses to pass through the Keeneland sales ringand the results had the New Zealander smiling. AutumnAsh (Tapit--Crafty Ember, by Crafty Prospector) (hip562) got things started when she sold for $280,000 tothe bid of Carolyn Vogel. Holmes and Tim Thorntonpurchased the mare for $35,000 at last year=sKeeneland November sale.

AI just thought she was pricedright,@ Holmes recalled. ATheintention was just to pinhookher. She had just come off thetrack. Give her some time, Ithought, and she=d be a beautifulmare.@ The 5-year-old Autumn Ash, atwo-time winner on the track, isa half-sister to Grade I winnerPampered Princess (IndianCharlie), prompting Holmes tobreed the mare to Indian Charliebefore her return trip to theKeeneland November sales ringyesterday.

It wasn=t long before Holmes was celebrating again.Hip 604 was a weanling colt from the first crop ofmultiple Grade I winner Colonel John. Holmespurchased Crystal Shard (Mr. Prospector), with this foalin utero, for just $23,000 at Keeneland last November. The weanling proved popular yesterday, ultimatelyselling for $170,000 to Peter O=Callaghan=s Walnut HillStables. AThe best one was the Colonel John,@ Holmes said. AIbought the mother last year carrying him. We=ve got agentleman that=s been working on the farm forever andI think the world of him. I financed him into a quarter ofthe mare, so he owned a quarter of that baby.@ Holmespaused before laughing, AHe=ll probably retire now. I=llprobably lose him.@ Completing Holmes=s trifecta yesterday was hip 615,a weanling colt by Indian Charlie, who also sold toWalnut Hill, this time for $210,000. The foal is out ofDiamondsareforesta (High Yield), a mare who waspurchased by Holmes= Marula Park Stud for $65,000out of the 2007 Keeneland November Sale. Theweanling was co-bred by Holmes and Tom VanMeterand consigned by VanMeter Sales. ADiamondsareforesta had a beautiful Indian Charliefoal that died, so I just bred her back to him, becauseof that,@ Holmes explained. Cont. p7

The foal=s final price wasn=t a big surprise to Holmes. AActually, I thought he could bring that, just becausehe was so nice,@ Holmes admitted. AHe has always justbeen really nice. And he is actually going through agrowth stage now, getting leggy.@ Holmes first came to the U.S. in 1984, working forAirdrie Stud manager Tim Thornton. He started MarulaPark Stud in 1992. Holmes purchased Heat Lightning(Summer Squall) in 2002, while the mare was in foal toStephen Got Even. The resulting foal was juvenilechampion Stevie Wonderboy. The mare resold for$1.1 million at the 2005 Keeneland November sale. The Marula Park commercial broodmare bandcurrently numbers some 25 head and Holmes is alwayslooking for the right opportunity to acquire more mares. AIt=s tough to buy,@ Holmes said of the Novembermarket. AAnd it probably won=t settle down. I wouldn=tcare if I didn=t get anything, unless I can find somethingthat I think is real good value. That=s when I getexcited. You just have to keep a close eye on them.@ Despite his success with yesterday=s weanlings,Holmes=s focus isn=t usually on selling foals. AWe never used to sell a lot of weanlings, but we=vehad a bit of luck with them,@ he explained. AYou=ve gotto sell the ones that are ready to sell, otherwise we=lljust keep them over.@ For now, Holmes is content to enjoy Wednesday=ssuccesses. AYou=ve got to enjoy it while you can,@ he said. ATheysay the tide comes in and the tide goes out. I guess thetide was coming in today.@ -Jessica Martini

Girolamo Gets With the Program .. When Darley made the decision to retire theimpeccably bred Grade I winner Girolamo (A.P. Indy--Get Lucky, by Mr. Prospector) to the newly reopenedSequel Stallions New York last week, the 5-year-oldbecame arguably oneof the best prospects--by race record andpedigree--to retire tothe Empire State inmemory. At least, that=s the opinion ofChester Broman, whohas made a pair ofpricey purchases atKeeneland Novemberto support the son ofblue hen Get Lucky, dam of graded winnersDaydreaming (A.P. Indy) and Accelerator (A.P. Indy),and granddam of Super Saver (Maria=s Mon) andBluegrass Cat (Storm Cat). Broman, who bid unsuccessfully on several maresSunday night at Fasig-Tipton, bounced back Monday toland hip 11, the MSW & GISP Spritely (Touch Gold--Wood Sprite, by Woodman), for $850,000. The 6-year-old mare sold in foal to Bernardini from the Edward P.Evans draft, which is being handled by Lane=s End.Spritely is a half-sister to GSP Sea of Trees (Belong toMe) and to MGSW Ailalea (Pulpit), and earlier this yearproduced a filly by the latter=s sire. Then on Tuesday, Broman went to $380,000 for the8-year-old broodmare Arradoul (Dixieland Band--GoldRush Queen, by Seeking the Gold), selling as hip 283from Eaton Sales, agent for Greenwood Lodge Farm.Another who was in foal to Darley=s Bernardini,Arradoul is a half-sister to MSW & MGSP Ender=s Sister(A.P. Sequel=s Becky Thomas, who advises the Long Island-based contractor, said it=s exciting to have a breederlike Broman behind her newest stallion. AChester=s has abroodmare band that is absolutely top-shelf, and he isexcited about a horse like Girolamo coming to NewYork--the state has never really had a horse like him,@said Thomas, who last week announced that she wasre-opening Sequel New York with Dennis Narlinger aftera two-year hiatus. Thomas said the impetus behind thereopening was the expected infusion of cash into theNew York-bred program from recently installed VLTs atAqueduct. Sequel is standing Girolamo on behalf of SheikhMohammed=s Darley. Wearing the royal blue of SheikhMohammed=s Godolphin, Girolamo won the six-furlongGI Vosburgh S. and one-mile GII Jerome H., andThomas said his sprinter speed is a huge plus when itcomes to standing in New York. AAs a blue-collar horsewoman who relies on thebreeders= awards, I really need these horses to run attwo,@ she said. AWith Girolamo, you have a stallion whowill probably be able to get you a 2-year-old who laterwill be able to run a mile and an eighth. That=s reallyimportant in the New York program.@ Thomas said that a number of Darley clients areplanning to support Girolamo with their AKentucky@mares, and several other prominent Kentucky breedershave expressed interest. Sequel New York has broughton Mark Toothaker, formerly of Legacy Bloodstock, toassist with bloodstock sales and client relations. AWe=re all just really excited and focused on makingthis a success,@ said Toothaker. Sequel also standsperennial leading NewYork sire Freud, theStorm Cat full-brotherto Giant=s Causeway,as well as the youngNoonmark, byUnbridled=s Song. AI wouldn=t havesunk so much moneyinto reopening thefarm if I didn=t thinkwe were positionedfor really big things,@said Thomas. AI really think we have the best stallionroster New York has ever seen. Freud just couldn=t be abetter sire. There was a stretch last month where hehad a 7-year-old [Future Prospect] win the GII [WinStar]Kentucky Cup S. going a mile and a sixteenth; he hadGiant Ryan, who=s a 5-year-old, win the GI VosburghS.; and he had a 2-year-old filly [The Funky Express]win a 5 1/2-furlong open stakes [Small Wonder S.] atDelaware. Bernardini Weanlings Continue to Sell Well... Colts by Bernardini accounted for two of the topprices for weanlings yesterday at Keeneland, led by a$350,000 colt out of Come Together (Dixie Union) (hip783). AHe=s a great-lookinghorse--an athletic horse with a nice pedigree. Thestallion averages $320,000, so I thought it madesense.@ The third foal out of Come Together, the Bernardinicolt was bred by Fred W. Hertrich III and consigned byTaylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Earlier on Wednesday, Everett Dobson=s CheyenneStables LLC paid $280,000 for a Bernardini colt out ofSweet Arizona (Gone West) (hip 476). We were surprised whenwe got [Sweet Arizona] for $110,000, because shewas in foal to Bernardini. Bernardini is a horse we try tobreed to every year. Sometimes we can get to him, sometimes we can=t. All three of her first foals arewinners, but she hasn=t produced a great horse yet.Hopefully this is the one.@ Paragon, located in Lexington, was founded in 2002. AOur broodmare band is down to about five. We=retrying to focus on quality, not quantity,@ Perry added. The Perrys also partner with John and Jill Stephens inVision Racing and Vision Sales. -Pete Denk

Keeneland November cont.

Keeneland November Continues Strong Returns... The Keeneland November sale continued to producestrong results during its third session yesterday.Through three sessions, the sale has grossed$147,028,500 and the average is up a whopping71.78% to $271,270, while the median is up 40% to$140,000. The intense competition for horses from thedispersals of Spring Hill Farm and Palides Investmenthas only made for stronger demand in Book 2,according to Keeneland officials. AFrom the comments that we received after Book 1, alot of people said that they couldn=t buy anything,@Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell saidyesterday. ASo they have just been moved back intoBook 2, where the top lots have just gotten morecompetitive. And with competition comes higher prices, inside and outside of the dispersals.@ Demand for weanlings was strong during yesterday=ssession, with foals representing three of the top 10lots. The day=s second-highest priced lot was the$700,000 paid for a weanling filly by Tapit. AThe weanling market is very strong,@ confirmedRussell. AThe sentiment is that pinhookers had beenoutbid by end users for the first two days, so they werevery strong today. It was a little frustrating for the firsttwo days, but they hit stride today.@ The November sale continues today at 10 a.m.

Archie St. George, St. George Sales: AThere=s been plenty of activity in the barn, and itseems nice foals are still bringing plenty of money. Iwould say the market is pretty solid. Everyone stillseems hungry for horses. Nice horses still bring plentyof money. I=m sure plenty of buyers didn=t get whatthey wanted in the first two days.@

Hanzly Albina, Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services: AIf everyone is going to go to iPad=s and stop carryingbooks, Keeneland should work on getting their wirelessnetwork set up properly. Otherwise we=re all in trouble. The connectivity is not always consistent. In differentbarns it varies. Cellphones don=t always work here, andthe WiFi doesn=t always work, and I just want it towork. Millions are at stake, so let=s get it done. Or weshould just go back to [print catalogs].@

Adrian Regan, Hunter Valley Farm: AThe foal market seems to be quite strong. The goodweanlings are making plenty, plenty of money. Themare market seems to be ok as well. To me it looksvery healthy.@

John Stuart, Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services: AThe babies are really strong. I=m buying race filliestoday, because there are no horse trainers here. They=ve been pretty reasonable so far. DISPERSALS SPUR 50% INCREASES Everybody pretty much knows by now that assessingmixed sales from year to year is difficult because thecomposition of the catalogues--what=s actually for sale--can vary so dramatically. After a yearling sales seasonwhich featured the Keeneland September Sale notchingup a 26% gain in average versus the 2009 bottom, andthe Tatteralls= October 1 sale registering a 32% gain inaverage over 2010, the first three days of theNovember sales, Fasig-Tipton=s Sunday sale plusKeeneland Book 1 Monday and Tuesday, were up 50%in gross (over $49-million up) and 71% in average. Thethree days this year grossed $147,426,500 (last year:$98,341,500) and averaged $405,018 (last year:$236,967), both huge increases. The joints werejumpin=, absolutely no doubt about that, with anamazing total of 35 seven-figure ($1-million plus) sales--13 at Fasig, and 22 at Keeneland--highlighted byTuesday=s sale of pro-tem 3-year-old filly championRoyal Delta to Benjamin Leon=s Besilu Stables(outbidding the sale=s second-leading buyer, FrankStronach=s Adena Springs Farm) for $8.5-million. Besilutook no prisoners during the two Keeneland sessions, buying nine horses--six from the Evans dispersalMonday, three (including Royal Delta) from the Palidesdispersal Tuesday--for a total of $22.4 million. AdenaSprings went home with seven purchases totaling$10.68 million. In all, the two 2011 KeenelandNovember Book 1 dispersals saw 83 horses sold, for atotal of $80,089,500 and registering an astonishingaverage of $969,934. That $80-million plus represented70% of Keeneland=s entire Book 1 receipts, and 54% ofthe three-day total of $147-million, with Fasig added in.Including Fasig, the 281 horses not in the twodispersals which sold over the November Sales= firstthree days averaged $239,633. So here=s the summary:83 horses in the two dispersals averaged $969,934;the other 281 horses not in the two dispersals averaged$239,633. That statistic becomes even moreinteresting if we go back and compare non-dispersalprices in 2009 and 2010--again, given the caveat thatdifferences in the catalogues can account for significantvariations. In 2010, there were no major dispersals; in2009, 38 horses from the Overbrook dispersal sold inKeeneland Book 1, grossing $20,957,000, andaveraging $551,500. If we subtract those from the2009 three-day total (again including Fasig), this, interestingly, is what the non-dispersal figures look like:

NON-DISPERSAL HORSES (Fasig + Kee Book 1)Year #Sold Gross Average2011 281 $67,337,000 $239,6332010 415 $98,341,500 $236,6972009 337 $79,599,500 $236,200

TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 11/10/11 • PAGE 13 of 20 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

I would call this a pretty interesting discovery. Iwouldn=t be entirely sure what it means, but it couldsuggest that there is a specific price level which hasbeen established for non-dispersal mixed sale >Book 1=(including Fasig November) horses. It may not meanthat, but if it doesn=t, it=s sure an interestingcoincidence. Having said that, it may be only a Book 1phenomenon. The two dispersals, 83 horses, wereroughly 20% of the Book 1 catalogue. That means 83horses, probably of comparable pedigree to last year=sBook 1 horses, got kicked back into Book 2; sureenough, halfway through yesterday=s opening sessionof Book 2, the average was up 35% versus last year=sthird day. Whether that really means comparablepedigrees are up 35%, or if it=s a reflection of betterhorses being kicked back into Book 2, or both, wewon=t be able to tell for a few days. But one thing isabsolutely certain this week: the news from theLexington sales is good. The higher end of the yearlingsales market finished up with 30% gains, and, howeverwe are able to measure it, the momentum is continuing.Bill Oppenheim may be contacted at [email protected] (please ccTDN management at [email protected]).Follow him on Twitter at www.twitter.com/billoppenheim.

“The pictures tell the story here: yes, the Keeneland Book 1gross was up 63%, and the average up 86%, from last year;while Fasig, with a more comparable catalogue to last year, was up 17% in gross and 32% in average. Combined, thetwo sales were up exactly 50% in gross from 2010, and 71%in average. The most important news (aside from 35seven-figure horses) is that the 2011 bars on the graphs –which are gross – are significantly higher than they’ve beenthe last two years. But the two big dispersals had a hugeimpact, as discussed in the column.” -Bill Oppenheim

DOGWOOD’S COT CAMPBELL TO RETIRE Afterforming racing partnerships for Dogwood Stable for 40years, W. Cothran (Cot) Campbell has announced thathe will no longer form partnerships as of Jan. 1, 2012,

but will continue to managethose already in existence. "Isuppose my new status couldbe regarded as>semi-retirement,'@ Campbellsaid in a statement.AHowever, it may well be thatDogwood--in a newlystructured form--will continuethe formation of new racingpartnerships, but my onlyresponsibility will be to see tothe servicing of the partnersand partnerships that are onthe books now." Hecontinued, AI adore racinghorses, and will always keepat it, being involved in a

variety of ways. What a wonderful life I have. However, though I am plenty fit and healthy, I am readyto ease off after doing this since 1971. This move willbe no great shock, so it follows that we will be talkingwith several outfits and individuals that could be part ofa restructured Dogwood, hopefully including a coupleof key people currently with us." Campbell said that hehad contacted the roughly 90 partners (in 43partnerships), and that they understood his rationaleand supported the decision. "We have a wonderfulclient roster, some partners who have been with us aslong as 35 years,@ he explained. AMany have becomeclose friends. Since we started we estimate that wehave brought into racing around 1200 people, and wehave certainly bought that many horses." Campbellbegan to develop the partnership idea in the late 1960sin Atlanta, but, in 1971, bought and raced Mrs.Cornwallis, one of the best fillies of her generation, andwas able to give up his advertising business andfounded Dogwood Stable in middle Georgia. In 1986,Campbell relocated the entire operation to Aiken, SouthCarolina. Dogwood has campaigned 76 stakes winnersto date, including Classic winner Summer Squall andchampion Storm Song. Campbell and his wife Annewere presented with a gold tray from Keeneland Oct.21 in recognition of their eight graded stakes winners atthe historic track.
