From the Desk of Bill Oppenheim

In this week’s column, Bill Oppenheim takes acloser look at Dubawi’s rise to the top. “Dubawi'sascension to the lofty position of Europe'sconsensus number two sire, behind only theincomparable Galileo, came as somewhat of asurprise to begin with, but it doesn't take breedersso long to realize the really good ones who haverisen through the ranks.”

Beating the subsequent G3 Solario S. scorerAktabantay (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) by 4 1/2 lengths on that occasion, Estidhkaar had the re-opposing Belardo (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) back infourth when defying a penalty in the G2 Champagne S.also over seven furlongs at Doncaster Sept. 13. AWeare hopeful that most of our runners will go in theground and the way Estidhkaar coped with the soft atDoncaster when winning the Champagne Stakes givesus plenty of encouragement,@ conditioner RichardHannon commented. AHe has come on again sinceTown Moor, worked smashing last weekend and thishas always been his major autumn target.@ Godolphinaims at the prize with the Sept. 25 G3 SomervilleTattersall S. winner Maftool (Hard Spun), whorepresents the Saeed bin Suroor stable. AMaftool isdoing really well and I was very pleased with his finalpiece of work coming into this race,@ his trainer said.AHe looks very well at the moment and I am lookingforward to seeing how he gets on in a big race likethis.@ One who could surprise is Olive Shaw=s June 17G2 Coventry S. fifth and July 26 Listed Winkfield S.winner Kodi Bear (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who had thesubsequent G2 Gimcrack S. scorer Muhaarar (GB)(Oasis Dream {GB}) back in third in the latter contestover this trip at Ascot. AI=m really happy with hispreparation, he had a nice break after Ascot andeverything has been going well,@ trainer Clive Cox toldPA Sport.

AI don=t think I need to be worried about the ground,it was on the easy side when he won at Ascot and heseemed to handle that. It=s a step up in class, no doubt, but I=m pleased with him and he=s going there in goodform.@ As always, it is impossible to ignore a Ballydoylechallenger and despite his modest credentials enteringthis edition, Smuggler=s Cove (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus})did look ready for bigger tests when winning the ListedStar Appeal S. by seven lengths over this distance onDundalk=s Polytrack a week ago.

Hannon also saddles the June 28 G2 Railway S.winner and July 20 G2 Prix Robert Papin scorer KoolKompany (Ire) (Jeremy), who was second in the G1 Phoenix S. at The Curragh Aug. 10 before floppingwhen sixth in the DBS Premier Yearling S. 11 days laterat York. AHe has been a star this season and ran wellfrom a bad draw in the big sales race at Doncaster lasttime, having earlier being beaten only half a length byDick Whittington (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) in thePhoenix S. in Ireland,@ Hannon added. AIt was softground there, so hopefully he=ll cope with theconditions, but we are just glad that Neil Werrett, whobought him privately at Doncaster, has left him with us.He=s a real sprinter.@ Third behind Ivawood in the July,Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum=s Muhaarar (GB)(Oasis Dream {GB}) went on to take the G2 GimcrackS. at York Aug. 23 and jockey Paul Hanagan believeshe has a chance of turning the tables on the favorite.AHe=s come on with every run and showed a really goodattitude at York--he really put his head down for methat day,@ he said. AHe won his maiden on very softground at Doncaster and is just a very straightforwardhorse that tries.@ Godolphin put forward the Sept. 22Leicester conditions scorer Charming Thought (GB)(Oasis Dream {GB}) and although he has something tofind on that form, trainer Charlie Appleby is hopeful hecan bridge the gap. ACharming Thought is in great nick.We appreciate that he is running in a Group 1 andrespect the opposition, but I am confident that he isready to take a step up in class,@ he explained. AIt=s a bitof a fact-finding mission in terms of whether he willcope with the rise in class and the softer ground, but Icouldn=t be happier with him. He looks to havestrengthened up a bit since his win at Leicester and wewill dip our toe into a race like this to see where we arewith him.@

Already successful in the venue=s Sept. 26 G2 Rockfel S., Godolphin=s bay looked as if this step up

in trip would suit as sheground out that win overseven furlongs having finishedsecond in the G1 MoyglareStud S. over that distance atThe Curragh 12 days earlier.Others making up a strongrepresentation from Ireland areClipper Logistics= AgnesStewart (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}),who hails from the all-conquering Eddie Lynam stableand who has already shownher prowess when takingDoncaster=s G2 May Hill S.

over this trip last time Sept. 12; and Susan Magnier=sTogether Forever (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The latter bookedher ticket with a commanding score over this mile inThe Curragh=s Listed Staffordstown Stud S. Sundayand will appreciate the ground, as will Rockcliffe Stud=sMarsh Hawk (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Interestingly,Marsh Hawk had the Rockfel runner-up Fadhayyil (Ire)(Tamayuz {GB}) seven lengths behind on debut on atesting surface over seven furlongs on the July CourseAug. 9 prior to finishing second in the G3 Dick PooleFillies= S. over six at Salisbury Sept. 4 and winningagain over an extra panel at Newbury Sept. 19.

AMarsh Hawk will love the ground,@ trainer RichardHannon said. AShe surprised us first time out on theJuly Course and then we made the mistake of droppingher back in trip when she just got beat at Salisbury. Butshe then showed us just how good she was whenwinning impressively at Newbury and we feel that shehas what it takes to go all the way. Obviously, Lucidawill be a tough nut to crack, but we like our filly a lot.@

FACING UP TO THE CHALLENGE Freddy Head=s skill at improving his fillies is renownedand he has a flourishing force to be reckoned with inSheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum=s Thawaany(Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) as she tackles Newmarket=s G2Challenge S. today. Denied a half length by Garswood(GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) when second in Deauville=s G1Prix Maurice de Gheest last out Aug. 10, the chestnut, who had previously taken the June 28 G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis at that venue, had last year=sChallenge winner and subsequent G1 Matron S. scorerFiesolana (Ire) (Aussie Rules) back in third and sets thestandard on that form. Penalised for his latest win inNewbury=s G2 Hungerford S. over this trip Aug. 16,John Cook=s Breton Rock (Ire) (Bahamian Bounty {GB})has the progressive profile to defy that extra burdenwhile the 3-year-old representation is headed byanother Shadwell colorbearer in the filly Muteela (GB)(Dansili {GB}). Five of the last seven renewals havefallen to that generation and the way the homebreddealt with Godolphin=s Tawhid (GB) (Invincible Spirit{Ire}) when scoring by 3 1/2 lengths in Redcar=s ListedGuisborough S. over this trip 13 days ago suggests shehas more to offer.

The globetrottingDandino (GB) (Dansili {GB}), beaten just over a lengthinto second in last year=s running by Fawkner (Aus)(Reset {Aus}) reportedly worked well beneath would-berider Craig Williams Thursday morning at the Werribeequarantine center, but pulled up lame in his off foreleg, according to Racing And Sports. "He didn't pull up toogood," trainer Marco Botti's travelling foreman PaulFrancis told AAP. "He wasn't 100% sound.Unfortunately it happens." Gris Caro (GB) (WithApproval), winner two back of the G3 Naturalism S.,was the intended mount of Joao Moreira, but was alsoscratched by trainer Jake Stephens. The Brazilian wasoffered the ride on Araldo (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}),but reportedly declined to ride based on his lack offamiliarity with the racetrack. Williams has now beennamed by trainer Mike Moroney. Gai Waterhouse hasalso cast some doubt on the participation of The Offer(Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), while Japanese raider Bande (Ire)(Authorized {Ire}) failed a veterinarian inspection andwill scratch. Boyd Browning Jr. cont.

Fasig-Tipton is returning to the Miami area for 2015.Why did you decide to make the move? AThere were a variety of reasons. First and foremost,Gulfstream Park is a premier location. It=s a great facilityin a great location. It has a trainer and owner colonythat makes it the epicenter of the industry at that timeof the year. And we=ve had great successselling quality horses in South Florida formany, many years. So it seems like a greatmarriage with Fasig-Tipton and Gulfstream. They=re trying to create a year-round racingcircuit and year-round activities, and thiswas a chance for us to go back to ourroots.@

Is this an indefinite move? AYes, there is a long-term contract inplace between the parties, and we view thisas our home going forward, which is a nicething to have.@

Talk, if you would, about the surface at Gulfstream. AOne of the great selling points is that this is aracetrack that people are used to training on and racingover, and it=s a dirt track. There=s familiarity, and thatgives people a level of comfort and confidence. They=llbe able to watch horses breeze and interpretinformation with a high level of confidence.@

Is there a sense of excitement generated by holding asale near a major metropolitan center like Miami? AThere=s no question. I don=t know a human being inthe world who doesn=t enjoy being in South Florida, particularly at that time of the year. There are fantastichotels and restaurants, and there are great attractionsfor our buyers and participants. It=s something I, andwe, underestimated. Palm Meadows is a great facility, but what we found is that there=s a little differencebetween Boynton Beach and Miami [laughs]. As goodas the facility, track and amenities at Palm Meadows, itjust didn=t have the pizzaz and excitement. Miami iscool and sexy and jazzy. People are comfortable there. They know where to stay, they know where to havedinner.@

What=s been the response from consignors? ANaturally, we got a lot of feedback from the sellersbefore making this decision, and there was near virtualconsent and support for us going back to South Florida.I think you=ll see them support the sale with a lot ofquality horses.@

The sale will be held about three weeks earlier than ithas been in recent years. Can you comment on that? AI think the window isn=t all that different, really, andit fit much better with Gulfstream Park=s schedule. Laterin March gets complicated with the GI Florida Derby, and it=s important for them, like it is for us, that thissale be a signature event. It also seemed better for themarketplace time-wise, and if a horse needs more time,

horsemen have the option of our Timoniumsale 60-70 days later.@

The 2014 sale has already turned out sometop horses. Competitive Edge (Super Saver)won the GI Hopeful S. I Spent It (Super Saver)won the GII Saratoga Special S. Blofeld(Quality Road) won the GII Futurity S. Thesuccess of grads always attracts buyers. Doesit also help attract horses to the sale? AThere=s no better advertisement orvalidation for a sale than to have successfulgraduates. To have three of the top 2-year-olds in the United States gives everyoneconfidence. I guarantee you that the

connections of those horses, somewhere in the back oftheir minds, are thinking about the 2015 KentuckyDerby. And when people arrive on the sales grounds ofthe 2015 Florida Sale, we want them thinking that theycan find the types of horses that can bring them to theDerby, the [Kentucky] Oaks and Breeders= Cup. And it=sbecause consignors are bringing horses that can.@

Dwindling catalog size has been a concern for everyboutique sale in the U.S. Is there still a place in themarket for a boutique 2-year-old sale? AWe all have a tendency in the world at large to putsimple labels on things. There=s no question there is,was, and will always be, a market for quality. In anyeconomy or marketplace, the safest place to be isalways in the quality segment. So we=ll try to attract abroad cross-section of quality horses. We won=t betrying to sell just million-dollar horses at Gulfstreamnext year. We hope we have a few, but it won=t bedominated by them. You want the person with$100,000 to spend to know that they can come downand get a quality athlete that can take them to a highlevel of success. Cont. p14

Browning Q&A cont.

You also want the people with a whole lot of moneyto spend to feel comfortable and confident in thevenue, and to have it so that there=s not a huge numberof horses to go through. It=s a balance.@

Has that been a focus, to attract middle-market buyersto The Florida Sale? AWe work our tails off to recruit all kinds of buyers, and I know other sale companies do, too. The thing isthat you try to educate buyers on the opportunities outthere. You may have a greater opportunity to buyquality at a value at Saratoga or September Book 1,because the sheer number of buyers might not be thathigh. But every market is constantly evolving.@

DUBAWI WEEK (2) Last week it was Dubawi week at Tattersalls= OctoberBook 1 yearling sale, as the Maktoum family and friendsbought all 10 which sold during Book 1 for an averageof nearly $1.1-million, topping even the mighty Galileoat the sales. This week his son, Poet=s Voice,

consolidated his own leadamong 2014 first-cropyearling sires, with a recordBook 2 yearling sold for525,000gns. Poet=s Voicehad leapt to the top of thefirst-crop table by virtue of acolt and a filly which soldlast Thursday for475,000gns and 700,000gnsrespectively, not to theMaktoums, but to the newboys in town, Qatar=s Prince

Joaan Al-Thani=s Al Shaqab Racing. Sheikh Hamdan=sShadwell Stud bought this week=s sale-topper. Dubawi=s ascension to the lofty position of Europe=sconsensus number two sire, behind only theincomparable Galileo, came as somewhat of a surpriseto begin with, but it doesn=t take breeders so long torealize the really good ones who have risen through theranks. Dubawi=s first 4-year-olds were racing in 2011,and by the time the current crop of yearlings was sired,in early 2012, Dubawi=s fee had risen to GBP75,000--ifyou could get one. He=s always had the reputation as asire of pretty ordinary-looking horses, but this cropcomes from a whole new set of pedigrees, and therelative few that were up for sale--only 14 have beenoffered, 12 sold, averaging $1,052,926 (click here)--sure must have looked the part. His median price for 12 sold was $983,803, which is perilously close to a$1-million median. For pedigree students Dubawi=s ascension presentstwo ironies. The first irony is that he is from the onlycrop (2002) by Dubai Millennium, who SheikhMohammed has been quoted as saying he believed wasabout the best horse he's ever had, and Dubawi isachieving what Dubai Millennium never had a chance toachieve. In that regard, as I=ve mentioned before, itparallels Seattle Slew being one of only 60 foals (in twocrops, in those days) by Bold Reasoning, and yet itreally was Seattle Slew, especially through A.P. Indy, who has ensured the survival of the Bold Ruler sire line,at least until now--and Tapit may be poised to keep itgoing. The second irony is that Dubawi could be eitherthe major, or one of the major, surviving branches ofMr. Prospector, which has been such a powerful sireline in American breeding. Fappiano was by Mr.Prospector, it is true, but he branched off into his own, pretty much dirt/American line. Cont. p16

“With 14% fewer catalogued and sold – and an amazing 79.7% clearance rate fromthe catalogue – it was some achievement for Tattersalls’ October Book 2 toregister a 17% gain in gross revenues, to more than 42.5-million guineas. Theaverage was up by a massive 36%, to 64,478 gns. However, October 2 was a4-day sale last year, and Book 3 was one day; this year, Book 2 was three daysand Book 3, yesterday and today, is two days. Books 2 and 3 combined, therefore, will be a more accurate measure of the relative increases.” – Bill Oppenheim

Dubai Millennium, of course, was by Seeking TheGold, primarily known as a top filly and broodmare sire,by Mr. Prospector. Dubawi went to stud in 2006 for GBP25,000, havingwon the G1 National S. over seven furlongs at theCurragh at two, and the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois, both at a mile, at three. Hequalified as a good prospect, though not as a topprospect, judged by his stud fee. A good number of hisearly good horses won their Group 1s in Dubai andHong Kong, and/or were geldings. He will now havemore flashily-bred sons going to stud, but his first>commercial= prospect, if you will, is Poet=s Voice, fromDubawi=s first crop, and who stands alongside his sireat Darley=s Dalham Hall Stud near Newmarket. Bred byDarley out of the Chief=s Crown mare Bright Tiara,Poet=s Voice won four of his 16 career starts, includingthe seven-furlong G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster as a2-year-old, and the G1 Queen Elizabeth S., scoring anose decision over Rip Van Winkle, at three. Poet=s Voice wasn=t really a horse I had too muchawareness of, but I did see a couple of yearlings by himin the Gestut Fahrhof consignment at the Baden-Badenyearling sale at the end of August, and remarked tosomeone how good-looking they were, especiallyconsidering he=s by Dubawi (the two sold for i110,000and i61,000). They replied they had also seen somegood-looking ones, and clearly, by last week, the wordwas well and truly out on the street. By the end ofBook 1 last week, he had established himself as theclear leader among 2014 North American and Europeanfirst-crop yearling sires, and the 525,000gns Book 2colt solidified it (click here). Through the end of Book 2Wednesday, Poet=s Voice had 49 yearlings sell for anaverage of $173,389. Irish sires Pour Moi (Coolmore)and Dream Ahead (Ballylinch) had averaged $136,049and $132,445 respectively, while America=s >marketfind= and leading first-crop yearling sire, Claiborne=sTrappe Shot, has averaged $132,232. Ashford=s UncleMo has averaged $119,250 with an amazing 84 sold.Kentucky=s Gio Ponti, Cape Blanco, and Tizway, andCoolmore=s Zoffany and Canford Cliffs all also averagedover $80,000 through Wednesday. Interestingly, five ofthat top 10 (Pour Moi, Zoffany, Canford Cliffs, UncleMo, and Cape Blanco) stand at either Coolmore orAshford. We should also note the impact of the Maktoumfamily in October Books 1 and 2. Not even attemptingto take into account a couple of Rabbah-managedbuyers who still do their own thing at the sales, JohnFerguson plus Rabbah signed for 72 yearlings in Book1, and 61 yearlings in Book 2--total 133. SheikhHamdan=s Shadwell signed for 13 in Book 1 and 36 inBook 2--total 49. Among John Ferguson, Rabbah, andShadwell, that=s 182 yearlings (18% of the 996 sold, ortwo of every 11), for a total spend of 34,270,500gns--28% of the October Books 1 and 2 total.

The major yearling market winds up with Tattersalls=October Book 3 yesterday and today, and the ArqanaOctober Sale, which runs next Monday throughThursday, and includes the last four yearlings to beoffered by the great German Uber-sire, Monsun. Ournext column, therefore, will run next Saturday, Oct. 25,at the finish of the major 2014 yearling sales.

NJ ASSEMBLY OKS SPORTS BETTING BILL The New Jersey State Assembly voted Thursday toapprove the most recent version of a bill to allow sportsbetting in New Jersey. The vote comes two days afterthe state senate approved the measure, which nowheads to Governor Chris Christie. The governor has 45days to veto or approve the legislation. Christie vetoed a similar bill in August over concernsthat it would be overturned in the federal courts. Thenew version of the bill contains language clarifying thatsports gambling at the state=s casinos and racetrackswould be overseen by private interests. In anticipation of the current legislation, MonmouthPark officals last week announced the formation of theIndependent Sports Wagering Association to regulatethe state=s sports gambling. Senator Joe Kyrillos, a primary sponsor of the bill, urged Christie to approve the measure. ASports betting can assist New Jersey=s strugglingcasino industry and with our challenges at MonmouthPark Racetrack,@ said Kyrillos. ABoth houses of thelegislature acted quickly to approve this criticalmeasure, and I am confident Governor Christie will joinour efforts to help protect Atlantic City and MonmouthPark jobs by signing the bill into law.@

RMTC ENCOURAGED BY UNIFORM RULEADOPTIONSEdited Press Release A review by the board of directors of the RacingMedication and Testing Consortium (RMTC) ofstate-by-state adoption of the Association of RacingCommissioners International (RCI) National UniformMedication Program showed that the majority of majorracing jurisdictions will have a substantial portion of theprogram=s four principal components in place by theend of the year. At its meeting Monday at Canterbury Park, the boardspecifically covered progress on the adoption of theNational Uniform Medication Program=s medicationschedule, third-party Lasix administration, laboratoryaccreditation, and the Multiple Medication ViolationsPenalty System. Due to regulatory and/or legislativerequirements, timing for the adoption process varies, but significant portions of the program will have beenadopted in all but five states. While most state testing labs have already achievedat least ISO accreditation, and additional RMTCaccreditation is steadily progressing, the RMTCaddressed uniformity of processes and parametersthroughout the states by approving a model Request forProposals (RFP) for Equine Drug Testing Laboratories.Dr. Mary Scollay, RMTC board member and equinemedical director of the Kentucky Horse RacingCommission, chaired the committee that drafted thedocument. The model RFP will serve as a tool for racingcommissions as they negotiate and enter into contractswith drug testing laboratories. The document providesguidelines for obtaining quality uniform testingnationwide. AThis model RFP is a clear and logical roadmap forregulators to use when navigating what can be anintimidating lab testing procurement process,@ said Dr.Scollay. AThis roadmap is key to insuring that uniformmedication regulation is supported by consistent testingpractices in all racing jurisdictions. Consistent labtesting is fundamental to nationwide medicationreform.@ The RMTC board also approved model rulerecommendations regarding medication labeling andcompounded medication that will be forwarded to theRCI for consideration. The rules recommended by theRMTC provide guidance to veterinarians, trainers andtrack officials regarding requirements for labeling ofprescription medication and substances that areacceptable for use in the pari-mutuel environment. AThe goal of this regulation is not to bar the use oflegitimate compounded medication,@ said RMTCExecutive Director Dr. Dionne Benson. AIt is crucial, however, that the commissions have the ability toprotect the health and welfare of the horse. Controlling--not eliminating--the use of compounded medication isan important step to assist the commissions in thatrole.@ cont. p2

FIRST SIX-FIGURE BOOK 3 YEARLING AT TATTSby Emma Berry A mare=s first foal winning her maiden by 10 lengthsjust 24 hours before her second foal goes through thering is the sort of update consignors pray for and onesuch prayer was answered for New England Stud whichsold a Cacique (GB) half-brother to Wednesday=s 10-length Nottingham winner Banzari (GB) (Motivator {GB})(video) for a new Book 3 record of 100,000gns. New England owner Peter Stanley said, AWe wereweighing up whether to go in Book 2 or Book 3. In theend we decided to try to be a big fish in a smaller pondand it's worked out.@ Lot 1427, out of the Cape Cross (Ire) mare Bantu(GB), was bred in partnership by New England Stud andBarton Stud and was bought by Tom Goff.

"Cacique is aserious sire andthis is a lovelyhorse,@ Goff said.AAlthough thesister won[Wednesday], shehad run and beenfifth in the [G2]May Hill [S. Sept. 12], so hertrainer MichaelBell must have agood opinion of

her.@ Like Banzari, the colt, whose further family includesGroup 1 winners Summoner (GB) (Inchinor {GB}) andThe Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}), will also be trained inNewmarket and is to join the stable of John Gosden.

Since its introduction in 2007, Book 3 has been runover one day, two days and three days respectively. This year it reverts to two days from just one in 2013making direct comparisons impossible. There was a palpable buzz around the walking ringfor the first session with many new faces in town forthis section of the October Sale, as well as plenty oftrainers who found trade too strong during the first twobooks. The refreshed buyers= bench saw first-dayturnover reach 5,516,250gns at an average price of20,507gns and median of 16,000gns. The clearanceremained high, as throughout Book 2, at 88% with 276of the 307 yearlings offered being marked as sold.

Offered by Kent=s son Edmond through hisBallyhampshire Stud, the February-born filly is the firstfoal of Lovers Peace (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}), whom heowned and trained to win twice in Ireland. Williams explained: AI have an owner who is lookingfor fillies as possible broodmare prospects if they aregood enough. I tried to buy through Book 2 but it wasvery hard. He added, AThis was more than I was intending tospend, but I really like her and she comes from a greatfillies' family.@ That family includes Pass The Peace=s daughterEmbassy (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}), who, like hermother was a champion 2-year-old, and G2 Pretty PollyS. winner Tarfshi (GB) (Mtoto {GB})

Lot 1610 was a 27,000gns foal purchase for BobbyDonworth of Round Hill Stud but such was the

AThe standard of individuals has beenextremely high throughout the week here.@ Eight Kyllachy yearlings sold so far in Book 3 haveachieved an average price of 40,125gns. AI think I got a bit too enthusiastic,@ joked Elsworth, but he was in good company as his fellow bidders weretrainers William Haggas and Eddie Lynam. A Kyllachy three-parts brother to Del Mar listedwinner Red Diadem (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) set the earlypace just four lots into the sale (lot Curlin) whenknocked down for 57,000gns to Anthony Stroud. A son of the Mr. Prospector mare Red Tiara, whosedam, the multiple winner Heart Of Joy (Lypheor), alsostruck at Del Mar in the GII Palomar H., the colt hadplenty of admirers and his family could be given aninstant boost by Fendale (GB) (Exceed And Excel{Aus}), who runs in today=s G3 Cornwallis S. on DubaiFuture Champions Day at Newmarket.
