Coming Full Circle... Fourteen months after their Big Brown (Boundary)was eased in the Belmont S., IEAH Stables signed theticket on the Dixie Union colt out of Tempo (GoneWest) for $145,000 at Fasig-Tipton=s Saratoga SelectedYearling Sale in the summer of 2010. They offered thebay at the same auction house=s Florida Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, and he attracted the eye of manya horse identifier, including his breeder, who either hadseller=s remorse or just wanted a Classic-lookingracehorse. Phyllis Wyeth purchased the horse whowould become Union Rags on a bid of $390,000 andsoon turned him over to Michael Matz, who conditionedBarbaro (Dynaformer) to a dominating victory in the2006 GI Kentucky Derby. And her re-acquisition didlittle to disappoint early on.

Top of the Crop... Union Rags rallied from seventh of nine to take hisfive-furlong debut over the Delaware main track July 12before decimating the field by 7 1/4 lengths in a sloppyrenewal of the GII Saratoga Special S. at SaratogaAug. 15. He skipped the GI Three Chimneys Hopeful S.in September in favor of the GI Champagne S. thefollowing month. Sent off the 6-5 chalk that afternoon,Union Rags was patiently ridden and was snookered ata crucial stage for about a quarter of a mile, butstreaked away when the daylight came to hand Alpha(Bernardini) a 5 1/4-length defeat. Favored to completean undefeated campaign in the GI Breeders= CupJuvenile, he sat a disastrous four-wide trip as Hansen(Tapit) set the pace inside. He couldn=t quite get to thepacesetter and settled for second, his Eclipse dreamsdashed. He began 2012 with obviously highexpectations and suggested he=d be the divisionalheavy with an effortless four-length score in the GIIFasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. Feb. 26. Asomewhat disappointing third following a questionableride in the GI Florida Derby Mar. 31, Union Rags wasbounced around at the start of the May 5 GI KentuckyDerby, was taken up nearing the half-mile pole and didexceeding well to finish seventh, 7 1/2 lengths behindI=ll Have Another (Flower Alley). Would there be a>Rags-to-riches= story in the Belmont?

Belmont S. cont.

Hoping for a Cleaner Trip... In an effort to change their luck, connections made aswitch from Julien Leparoux to John Velazquez, whowon his first Belmont astride the filly Rags to Riches(A.P. Indy) in 2007. Unmolested at the break this timearound, Union Rags drifted back to about midfield asupstart and third wagering choice Paynter (AwesomeAgain) was ridden for speed by Mike Smith, alreadysecond aboard Bodemeister (Empire Maker) in the Derbyand GI Preakness S. Following an opening quarter milein a fairly quick :23.72, Paynter was then allowed tocover an internal half-mile in :51 as positions remainedlargely unchanged with another six furlongs still aheadof them. Velazquez took a look behind him shortlythereafter and asked Union Rags to get just a touchcloser to Paynter, who picked up the tempo a bit andcovered the mile in 1:38.85. Atigun and Leparouxmoved in unison with Union Rags, though forced overland, but loomed a serious threat four wide at thequarter pole. Paynter, looking to give Ahmed Zayat hisfirst Classic victory after several agonizing defeats, hitthe eighth pole still going well, but Smith had vacatedthe fence and left an inviting opening for Union Ragsand Velazquez to go through, if good enough. And thatUnion Rags proved, as he dug in tenaciously andgrabbed the long-time leader in the final 40 yards for ahard-earned success. AWe always thought this horsehad Triple Crown potential,@ a clearly relieved Matzcommented. AWhen we trained him, we gave him fourraces as a 2-year-old and gave him a rest and had agood plan. He never missed a beat. His first racecouldn=t have been any easier. He had trouble in hissecond race and his third race. I do really think that thishorse, when he has a clean trip and can show himself,is one of the best 3-year-olds in this crop. Whether hecould have done something against I=ll Have Another, Idon=t know, but it sure would have been fun to see.@Click for the brisnet.com chart, the brisnet.com PPs,the free brisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree or thevideo, sponsored by Taylor Made Sales.

Z Curse... Pioneerofthe Nile, Nehro, Bodemeister and nowPaynter. All have carried the silks of Zayat Stables torunner-up finishes--most of the excruciating variety--inClassics over the last few years. AHeartbreaking defeat.A heartbreaking defeat,@ said Zayat, whose JustinPhillip (First Samurai) was run down late in the GII TrueNorth H. earlier on the program. AHe ran his guts out. It=s just his [fifth] race. What do they call that race, the>Test of the Champion?= To go a mile and a half theway he did, in only his [fifth] race, I am very lucky tohave him.@

Dullahan Struggles at Big Sandy... Dullahan (Even the Score), third in the GI KentuckyDerby and the post-time favorite for the Belmont S.,raced in the latter half of the field early on and neverreally kicked it in, finishing seventh. AI don=t think hereally liked the track today,@ commented jockey JavierCastellano, who was in the irons for the first time.AHe=s the type of horse who likes the turf or Polytrackmore. The track was a little deep today and he kind ofstruggled a little bit.@ Added trainer Dale Romans, ATherace unfolded like it looked on paper to me. Paynter rana big race, they all ran big, Union Rags ran big; we justdidn=t have a finishing kick. This is a good horse, a verygood horse. I was sure he was going to run a really bigone. It=s disappointing.@

Third, beaten a head, in the GIII Marshuas RiverS. at Gulfstream Jan. 7, the homebred was along lateto register a half-length victory in the GII Honey Fox S.Mar. 18. Desert Blanc took the first three starts of his careerfor Pascal Bary, following a Longchamp maiden winJune 4 with a Deauville all-weather conditions successJuly 8. The bay validated favoritism in the Listed Prixde Tourgeville on the turf at Deauville July 31, thenendured a tough trip when third beaten a length and anose in the G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange Sept. 17. Thebay closed out the European portion of his career witha well-beaten eighth-place effort behind Byword (GB)(Peintre Celebre) and Cirrus des Aigles (Fr) (Even Top{Ire}) in the G2 Prix Dollar Oct. 1 at Longchamp andmade his Stateside debut in the Fort Marcy, leadingpast the furlong marker before getting run down byBoisterous by a length.

Whereas he was off slowly in the Fort Marcy, DesertBlanc was away without incident and held the rail intothe first turn before allowing Hudson Steele(Johannesburg) to lead and took a sit just off his heels.Content to save ground beneath Ramon Dominguez, itwas increasingly apparent that the British-bred wasgoing to need some luck, as Papaw Bodie and BrilliantSpeed (Dynaformer) stacked up to his outside and lefthim in jail. Still galloping just behind Hudson Steeleturning for home, he came out to the two path andjumped onto his incorrect lead, but was able to bull hisway through and outfought a game Papaw Bodie for anarrow victory. "I had a great trip," Dominguez stated."I was fortunate enough to get in between horsesturning for home and he was pretty determined to getup. I was concerned about the lack of early speed but Ijust trying to do my best to keep him cool and weprevailed at the end." Added Javier Castellano aboardthe beaten favorite, AI had a beautiful trip. That=s what Iexpected. There was no speed in the race. The way thefractions were, he was pretty comfortable on the lead. Ididn=t want to take away from the way he wanted togo. Nobody wanted to go the lead. It worked out greatfor me. The horse responded really well today.@

Acclamationjumped away well andassumed his usual spot onthe front end. He wasallowed to get away withsix furlongs in 1:14 4/5,which pretty much spelleddoom for the others. Thechamp drifted out in thelane and Slim Shadey didhis best to cut the margindown, but Acclamationwas never in seriousdanger late. "I've beenworking out a lot and doing my cardiovascular work,@commented a rejuvenated Patrick Valenzuela. AI hadplenty of horse the whole time. He relaxed on the leadand when they came to me on the last turn, I justasked him a little and he picked it up nice. Going thatfar, they were going to go :48 and change, :49 paceanyway. I'm glad [jockey] Eswan [Flores on BarneyRebel] didn't use his horse to try and make it a speedduel. But my horse would have put him away and keptrunning anyway. (Warren) has done a tremendous jobbring him back to where he was at today. I feel thathe's going to improve off this race. Coming back offan eight month layoff with a setback and a month inbetween, he did a great job. This is just a tremendoushorse. I feel like Acclamation does, really good."

Woody Stephens S. cont.

Trinniberg gave his connections some consolation forthe injury suffered earlier by Giant Ryan (Freud) andcemented his status as the leading sprinter of hisgeneration with a front-running victory in the WoodyStephens. Runner-up to Currency Swap in the GI ThreeChimneys S. last September and in the GII Nashua S.the following month, the dark bay attended a blisteringpace in the inaugural Breeders= Cup Juvenile Sprint andfaded to seventh behind Secret Circle (Eddington). TheTriple Crown nominee returned in style, taking the GIII Swale S. by a half-dozenlengths Mar. 10 at Gulfstream, then parlayed a soft trip into athree-length score overHardened Wildcat (Hard Spun)in Aqueduct=s GIII Bay Shore S.Apr. 7. When his connectionsdecided to try Trinniberg in theGI Kentucky Derby, he wasexpected to take them as faras he could for as long as hecould. He ran into a roadblock named Bodemeister(Empire Maker), who led through six furlongs in 1:094/5, and Trinniberg, as most expected, had run his raceand was eased home for all intents and purposes. Theyeven toyed with a run in the GI Preakness ifBodemeister didn=t show up, but wisely backed downfrom that and returned to the one-turn game here.Quickly into stride, Trinniberg was joined--somewhatsurprisingly--by his Hopeful conqueror and the duoraced through an opening fraction of :22.30, as IlVillano, restrained off the pace, held the fence fromthird. The front two began to sneak away a bit at thequarter pole, and Trinniberg asserted superiority in thefinal furlong to score handily. AThere=s nothing morethat we can ask for,@ commented winning ownerShivananda Parbhoo. AI was expecting 44 [seconds],1:08. I know this horse is capable of going fast. Whenthey run this hard, you hope they come back good.$400,000 [purse], this is the biggest win. I don=t thinkany 3-year-old is going to be able to run with him.@

I was pretty lucky, because she passed me justafter the wire.@ Eurton was understandably pleasedwith the result. AThat was an unreal ride,@ he said. AIthought she was going into this race a little on theaggressive side, but she was real relaxed, and I hopeshe keeps improving with age. Seeing off a strong Britishchallenge to get back on track here, he overcame atardy start and early keenness racing in the bottom halfof the field as Davy Bonilla steadied Archbishop on thefront end to create a false pace. Traveling ominouslystrongly passing the quarter pole as the frontrunnerkicked into the clear, he provided a passable impressionof his sire=s impressive Classic win here 15 years ago toinhale that rival with 100 yards remaining and drawaway for an authoritative success.

MOOD MUSIC PLEASEBy Richard Zachariah In racing who are the stars--horses or humans? It's a question from the ages and will never be trulyreconciled, such is the competition for our hearts andminds between the legends of the turf. Saturday, the two again vied for the headlines, asPeter Moody--a trainer at the height of his powers amonth from his 43rd birthday and currently dominatinga not-inconsiderable part of world racing--placed his bigfootprint over Brisbane's Eagle Farm racecourseclaiming two Group 1's and a Group 2 in an historicwinning spree under a rainless, but forbidding sky. For Moody, a proud Queenslander who has soughtand found his fortune down south in Victoria, cameback yesterday to claim the racing trifecta of hisboyhood dreams and finally signal the return of thenative who now has in his stable Black Caviar, arguablyour greatest-ever sprinting mare. For Moody to train the winners of a Stradbroke H., aQueensland Derby and a Brisbane Cup in the space ofjust 80 minutes is not only unprecedented, but mustgrab the headlines for the human half. Racing is never that straightforward or obvious. Look behind the trainer's latest million-dollar mare,Stradbroke heroine Mid Summer Music, and you find astory that will pull at your heart strings and for amoment dislodge the big black mare from our thoughts.

Mid Summer Music won the $1-million Stradbroke H.,Queensland's time-honored sprint over 1400 meters atan outsiders price of $28.90, and was all but given upby Moody after her first start win at outbackWarracknabeal as a 4-year-old in 2010. Despite thewin, it is on the record that Moody wanted to sack herbut was prevailed on by jockey and trackwork riderLinda Meech and co-breeder John Ivill to persevere. However the doubts lingered in Moody despite the factthat along the way, Mid Summer Music had accruednearly $500,000 before yesterday, including a victoryin the G3 Bletchingly S. >I was never that confident about her today,@ Moodyacknowledged. AHer win has me pinching myself to seethat it's true. But again she has made a mug out of meand long may she do it.@ Moody has high standards and this mare, certainlynot born in the purple and described yesterday bystable staff on Twitter as >a potty foal who didn't raceuntil 4-years-old,' had a lot to prove. By minor sire Oamaru Force (Geiger Counter), whothis season would welcome any mare at a bargainservice fee of $3,000, Mid Summer Music wasorphaned when her dam Samsara Lady (NZ) (Nassipour)didn't survive the ordeal of her birth. Hand-reared byher dedicated breeders at Noor Elaine Farm in northcentral Victoria, the young Mid Summer Music took ashine to an orphaned lamb and the two becameinseparable. Maybe because of her early hardship thefilly was a difficult horse to train and a brute to breakin--a kicking, bucking nightmare was how one handlerdescribed her yesterday. But always there were peoplebehind her who had faith, and yesterday, as in thegreat stories of the turf, the full circle was completed, and celebrations at Noor Elaine Farm went long into thenight, drinking not only to the health of their once-troubled filly, but also to the fact that their stallionOamaru Force had just sired his first Group I winner. In the meantime Moody, who unlike most men canmulti-task, had other thoughts in the back of his mind.Discussing the courageous front running win of hisBrambles (NZ) (Savabeel {Aus}) in the Derby and Lightsof Heaven (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) in the Cup, Moodyseemed distracted. Looking at his watch he told SkyChannel, AThe boys [his staff travelling with BlackCaviar] will be just getting to the stables in the earlymorning at Newmarket.@ It was an aside that gave evidence of his state ofmind, anxious to know the latest on how the mare wascoping not only with the new surrounds, but celebritystatus in front of the world's media. Make no mistake--Royal Ascot in a fortnight isMoody's Waterloo. Saturday may have reclaimed hisQueensland birthright, but for the trainer with an Irishheritage to capture the Diamond Jubilee will seal thedeal and remove any English doubters who have thetemerity to question her or his right to do it.
