Born to Sea Stretches Out... John Oxx has left in a duo, with Born To Sea (Ire)(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) sporting first-time blinkers andJaber Abdullah=s Akeed Mofeed (GB) (Dubawi {Ire})now to be ridden by William Buick after Niall McCullagh

was passed over. AIt=s fantastic toget such a good ride and I=mlooking forward to it,@ Buick said.AHe was a high-profile horse lastyear and it=s always a pleasure toget these call-ups for such a goodfirm and such a nice horse.@ Thatcolt=s troubled spring has beenwell-documented and it will be atall order for him to win on hisfirst outing since finishingrunner-up to David Livingston (Ire)(Galileo {Ire}) on extremely testingground in the G2 Beresford S.here in September. AHe was apromising 2-year-old last year andwe had high hopes for him,@ Oxx

told the Post. AHe went through the winter fine, buttook a lame step 10 days before the G3 Leopardstown2000 Guineas Trial and it took him a while to overcomethat. Then we were aiming for the G2 DerrinstownStud Derby Trial and he pulled a muscle that week, soalthough they were fairly minor things, it was seriouslybad timing. So out of the last 12 weeks, he=s hadalmost six of those walking and trotting and it=s not agreat preparation. The last month has gone well and heis working and moving very well, but he=s not match-fit.He=s fit enough to run a good race and start off for theyear and, hopefully, we=ll learn something.@

Bodemeister to WinStar cont from p1

Accorded TDN Rising Star status off a 9 1/4-lengthmaiden win in his two-turn debut at Santa Anita Feb. 11, Bodemeister ran Creative Cause (Giant=sCauseway) to 3/4 of a length when second in the GII San Felipe S. Mar. 10, then earned his role asKentucky Derby favorite with a powerhouse 9 1/2-

length victory in the Arkansas Derby.Owner Ahmed Zayat sold a minorityinterest in the colt to businessmanMike Moreno in late April, andBodemeister led the Kentucky Derbythrough fast fractions and carried athree-length advantage into the finalfurlong before being run down by I=llHave Another. He repeated thatperformance in the Preakness, yielding grudgingly in the final yardsto drop a neck decision. Those lastthree races produced Beyer SpeedFigures of 108-109-108. ABodemeister is a brilliant horse, and this industry needs more siresthat can carry their speed a mile-and-a-quarter,@ said his Hall of Fametrainer Bob Baffert. Added Walden, ABodemeister willbe in an advantageous situationwhen he retires to stud. Mr. Zayatand Mr. Moreno have built quality

broodmare bands and are very active in themarketplace. I think breeders will love the fact theystart off with three potential bidders on his babies. Weare excited about the possibilities and the relationship.@ Bodemeister, who skipped the GI Belmont S., had hisfirst workout since the Preakness at Santa Anita June 24, going a leisurely half-mile in :50.60. He istentatively scheduled to resume his campaign in the GI Haskell Invitational S. at Monmouth Park July 29.

LONGTIME BREEDERS SCORE DESERVED'PLATE' WIN By Lucas Marquardt Last Friday, owner/breeders Wally and Terry Leongmet trainer Danny Vella for the first time in person. Two days later, the trio teamed to win the 153rdedition of the C$1 million Queen's Plate with Strait ofDover (English Channel). For the Leongs at least, unfamiliarity breeds success. The road that led the British Columbia-based coupleto Vella began last fall--when they chose him based ona computer search--to take over the training of theirhomebred colt, then an unknown Hastings Park runnerwho was beaten a combined 31 lengths in his first two

starts. But the roadthat led them toPlate glory beganmuch earlier thanthat, as the Leongshave worked hardthrough severaldecades in thebusiness, sometimes withsuccess, and atother timesstruggling. Theirs is

a story that, with little hyperbole, represents a hopethat keeps many small breeders in the business: stay atit long enough, and you might just reach the top of thesport. The Leongs, who operate under the banner CanyonFarms, first got involved in Thoroughbreds back in themid-1960s, when Wally bought into a racehorse with afew college buddies from his alma mater, the Universityof British Columbia. A decade later, they were soimmersed that they opened a breeding and stallionoperation in Kelowna, a small city in British Columbiafour hours northeast of Vancouver. Called MissionCreek, the farm stood, among others, the Sir Ivorstallion Golden Reserve, who for years remained atopthe leading sires list in the province. Bloodstock agentRollin Baugh advised on some of those initial purchases, and was among those who called the Leongs this weekto congratulate them. By the early '80s, however, Mission Creek, like manyother farms in the area and beyond, began to struggle. The economy was stagnant, and interest rates werepunishingly high. Mission Creek was forced into abankruptcy, threatening the Leongs' involvement in thebusiness. But the couple wasn't about to give up ontheir dreams. After reorganizing, they reopened asCanyon Farms, whose orange silks still have the oldMission Creek logo on them.

One of the stallions the Leongs stood at CanyonFarms, a son of Seattle Slew named Yoonevanoindirectly led to Strait of Dover. The Leongs purchasedYoonevano as a stallion prospect for just $4,000 at the1998 Keeneland November Sale. The horse was smalland, as Wally describes him, very "thick," but he hadpedigree behind him. He was a half to Grade I winnersPine Bluff (Danzig) and Demons Begone (Elocutionist),and another sibling, Angel Fever (Danzig), would laterbecome the dam of GI Kentucky Derby winner FusaichiPegasus (Mr. Prospector). The success of Danzig blood in the family led theLeongs to search out mares by the Claiborne great forYoonevano. "I always look for blood," said Wally. "Wecan't afford to buy a young Danzig or Storm Cat mareof anything like that, so we have to buy the older ones, which is usually someone else's cull." He was able to acquire the 13-year-old Danzig mareSubtle Blend for $12,500 at the 1997 KeenelandNovember Sale, and from her bred Yoonevano's goodson Illusive Force, a homebred earner of over$500,000. Illusive Force gave the Leongs' their firstQueen's Plate starter, but after suffering heat stroke, hewalked across the line in 2003, the year Wando won.He is now a retiree at Canyon Farms. Cont. p9

Queen=s Plate Breeders cont.

A few years later, the Leongs added another daughterof Danzig: Bahrain Star. They purchased her, in foal toSmart Strike, for $27,000 at the 2002 KeenelandNovember Sale. The resulting foal, Starlite Strike, couldrun. She won two stakes and earned over $200,000.But four subsequent matings to Yoonevano provedwildly unsuccessful. All four horses made it to theraces, but none won, and combined earned a little morethan $3,400. "They all came out to be plow horses,"laughed Wally. "They were really thick, and couldn'trun worth a damn." The Leongs hadn't lost faith in Bahrain Star, though, and began searching out a more suitable mate. SmartStrike, Starlite Strike's sire, was now out of their pricerange, but one of his sons caught their eye. "We werein Kentucky, and English Channel was just coming offthe racetrack," said Wally. "He'd just won the [2007]GI Breeders' Cup Turf. We went to see him at BenWalden's Hurricane Hall, where he was at the time. Hewas smallish, but we were looking for a finer stallion, and we liked what we saw. We asked if they'd acceptour mare, and they did, and that was Strait of Dover." Wally said when Strait of Dover was born, he was, thankfully, more like his sister Starlite Srike thanBahrain Star's produce by Yoonevano. "He's notclunky," he said. That Strait of Dover is not clunky is anunderstatement. Unplaced in his first two starts atHastings as a 2-year-old last summer, he has nowcrossed the line first in his last five starts, all overWoodbine's Polytrack, including powerful wins in theMarine S. May 12 and in the Queen's Plate. He wouldprobably be heavily favored to win the second leg ofthe Triple Crown, the Prince of Wales S. at Fort Erie July 15, regardless of his 0-for-2 record on dirt. Wallyisn't sold on a tilt in the Prince of Wales, but believesStrait of Dover has some excuses for those Hastingsefforts, when he was trained by Cindy Krasner. "In that first start, he broke really bad, and that wasit," said Wally. "In his second, there was a big gap afteryou come out of the starting gate--kind of like atWoodbine in the Plate--and he ducked in toward thatopening. He was shuffled back and left so far behind hedidn't have a chance. And then the meet ended."

At that point, the Leongs decided to take a chance onStrait of Dover's grassy pedigree, and made plans toship him to Woodbine. In need of a trainer, Wallyhopped on Google and started researching. "I read afew bios, and I liked what I read about Dan Vella," hesaid. "I just met him for the first time last week, whenwe came to the track on Friday morning. He's a goodman--I couldn't have picked a better trainer, and hiscrew is great. They're just so nice. We really owe allthis to Danny and his team--they're the ones who do allthe work." Leong said that when he departed Woodbine after theQueen's Plate, he gave Vella the nominating papers forthe Prince of Wales and said, "you decide." By Wednesday, the Leongs were back to Kelownaand catching up on farm business. Sadly, Bahrain Starran into complications last year carrying a full-sibling toStrait of Dover, and the farm lost both the mare andthe foal. But Canyon Farms does have three othermares currently in foal to English Channel, who nowstands at Lane's End, and also has an English Channelyearling on the ground from the stakes-producing mareFabulous Babs, yet another daughter of Danzig. StarliteStrike, meanwhile, is in foal to another Lane's Endstallion in Stephen Got Even. "Lane's End has looked after us very well," saidWally. "I got good-luck notes from them before therace, and right after the race got a congratulations fromthem. The gal I deal with is Gemma Freeman. She'sbeen great." The Leongs have scaled Canyon Farms down a bit inrecent years. At its height, the farm was home to about20 foals each spring. Now, that number's around fouror five. Wally said he might add another mare or twonext season, and not surprisingly mentioned EnglishChannel as a possible mate for them. While they mullthose decisions, the Leongs will just continue to bask inthe glow of Strait of Dover's Queen's Plate win, whichhas struck a chord of provincial pride in BritishColombia. "We had 22 friends and family come with us toToronto," Wally said. "We stayed up to 3:30 in themorning, watching the CBC [broadcast of the Queen'sPlate]. It still hasn't totally sunk in. It was unreal. I'venever felt like that before." Welcome to the top.

FIRE ON ICE(c, 3, Unbridled’s Song--

Lost In The Storm, by Storm Cat)O-Stronach Stables, Eli Gindi & John

Kimmel; B-Mike Abraham & Taylor MadeStallions Inc (KY); T-John Kimmel.

Last Start: 1st Saratoga MSW Aug. 27

J “TDN Rising Star” J Fire On Ice (Unbridled=sSong), a dazzling double-digit debut winner as a juvenileon the loaded GI Travers S. undercard last summer(video), is gearing up for a much-anticipated return to

the races with an eye on theupcoming Saratoga meeting. Sidelined with a condylarfracture to his left hind ankle while preparing for the GI Champagne S. last fall, theflashy gray has since resurfacedon the worktab with a pair of easythree-furlong moves in :39 flatover the Belmont training trackJune 17 and 24, respectively.

ASo far, so good,@ reported trainer and co-owner JohnKimmel, adding that Fire On Ice=s injury required asmall, one-screw repair.

AWe=re bringing him back in a slow, progressivefashion. He=s had a couple of what we called, >two-minute licks,= but he=s actually gone down there andworked in :39 and was out in :54 [for four furlongs].@ Out of an unraced half-sister to champion sprinterSquirtle Squirt (Marquetry), Fire On Ice was purchasedby Kimmel and Eli Gindi for $160,000 at the FTKJULyearling sale with the intention of pinhooking as ajuvenile. After failing to impress over Keeneland=sPolytrack during the April Sale breeze show, biddingstalled out at $170,000, and the duo took Fire On Icehome as a racing prospect. AI thought he was a horse that had a lot of pedigreeand had a very positive physical presence to him evenback then,@ Kimmel recalled of his charge=s appeal as ayearling. AHe acted like he knew where he was going--he=s been a tough customer that way. He=s got some ofthat Storm Cat demeanor in him; he could be tougharound the barn at the times. I thought he had a greatwalk on him when he was a yearling, and as soon as Iput him on the track at Belmont [after the KEEAPRsale], he was outworking every horse I put him with, including a horse that went on to win a Grade IIstakes.@ Not much of a secret at 5-2 in his Aug. 27 unveilingat the Spa, Fire On Ice broke on top, rattled offfractions of :22.29 and :45.07 while racing underpressure, and dropped the hammer under a busy DavidCohen in the stretch, streaking home 10 3/4 lengthsclear of Our Entourage (Street Cry {Ire}). Geared downa bit late, he stopped the clock for six furlongs in1:09.67, good for an 88 Beyer Speed Figure. The eye-catching effort prompted Frank Stronach to purchasean 80% controlling interest. AIf his fitness level continues to improve, we=ll askhim to do a little bit more each time,@ Kimmelconcluded. AI=ll have a better line on him once we get acouple of half-mile works into him. Right now, he=shandling everything we=ve been doing quite well.@

TBA ANNOUNCE NEW BONUS SCHEME The Thoroughbred Breeders= Association yesterdayrevealed that it will launch a new bonus scheme worth,5 million per year in an attempt to boost poor levels ofBritish prize money. Unveiling the initiative at theorganisation=s annual general meeting in Newmarket, departing Chairman Kirsten Rausing gave the details ofthe British Owners and Breeders Incentive Scheme(BOBIS). ABOBIS is a simple scheme designed to betransparent and easy for breeders and owners tounderstand its benefits,@ she said. AImportantly, it alsorecognises and rewards the contribution ofowner/breeders and encourages the retention of fillies, with the aim that we see an increase of domesticbroodmares over the next five years.@ Designed by TBAVice-Chairman Julian Richmond-Watson, Paul Greeves,Grant Pritchard-Gordon and Louise Kemble, thescheme=s aim is to boost prize money by 25%, with theextra prize fund split 70/30 between owners andbreeders, respectively. Richmond-Watson added, AThisis unashamedly a scheme to support owners of maresbased in the UK. It=s a >self-help= scheme for everysingle Flat and National Hunt race and would be phasedin over three years. We=d be looking to the Levy Boardto match the funds raised by owners and breeders. Bythe time it=s up and running it should be generating anextra ,5 million.@
