Connections of owner Barbara Banke=s Stonestreet Stable, including Banke, broodmare manager Gary Megibben, and bloodstock advisor John Moynihan, came together with Rachel Alexandra=s attending veterinarians for a press conference yesterday afternoon at Rood & Riddle, and explained the seriousness of her condition. AShe=s got a big mountain to climb,@ admitted Megibben. AIt=s hard, and we=re hoping for the best,@ added an emotional Banke. AWe just ask people to send their thoughts and prayers to Rachel.@ Banke said Rachel Alexandra is far from being out of the woods, but said she appeared Abrighter@ Thursday afternoon. On Tuesday, the bay mare foaled a healthy, 140-pound filly by Bernardini, her second foal, but was watched closely because of difficulties during the delivery. By Wednesday afternoon, a change in her demeanor and an excess of fluid in her abdominal cavity was observed--often a sign of infection--and she was rushed to Rood & Riddle where she underwent exploratory surgery Wednesday evening. Dr. Brett Woodie operated on the 7-year-old mare, and discovered a section of her small colon that had lost its blood supply, likely caused by an injury during foaling. This loss of blood supply appeared to have caused a weakness that allowed bacteria access to the abdominal cavity. Woodie removed the damaged section of her colon, and an extensive lavage--a flushing-out process--was undertaken to remove inflammatory cells and bacteria. Because of the nature and extent of the problem, the surgery was long and technically demanding, but Woodie called Rachel Alexandra=s recovery from anesthesia Auncomplicated,@ and said Ashe=s doing as best as we could expect from this stage in her recovery.@ Cont. p3 FASIG-TIPTON CATALOGUES 136 FOR FLORIDA The 2013 Fasig-Tipton Florida Sale of Selected 2- Year-Olds in Training catalogue is now available online. Emergency Surgery for Rachel Alexandra cont. from p1

Dr. Bonnie Barr, an equine internal medicine specialistat Rood & Riddle and one of the first doctors to examineRachel Alexandra, said it was too early to make aprognosis for recovery. AWe have to see how she responds to treatment andtake it pretty much one day at a time,@ she said. Barr

said it was also premature to commenton whether Rachel Alexandra would beable to have foals in the future, shouldshe make a full recovery. Rachel Alexandra=s foal, meanwhile, has been put to a nurse mare, asurrogate mother who, if everythinggoes right, bonds to a foal and allows itto nurse from her. Megibben said thenurse mare was a Quarter Horse marefrom another farm who reportedly hasquickly accepted Rachel Alexandra=s

foal as her own. AWe took [the foal] out of the stall tosee how she=d respond, and she got pretty angry, so wethink they=ve already bonded to each other,@ saidMegibben. Megibben estimated that, from 80 or 90mares at Stonestreet, nurse mares are usually requiredonce or twice a year. Even if Rachel Alexandra were torecover exceptionally fast, the foal will remain with thenurse mare until weaned roughly six or seven monthsfrom now. AThe filly looks great,@ Banke said of the Bernardinifoal. AShe really wants to run around. She=s just gettingused to her nurse mare right now.@

The size of Rachel Alexandra=s foal--140 pounds--would be considered reasonably large for a Thoroughbredfoal, and is the largest born at Stonestreet so far thisyear. But Woodie said he didn=t believe that was a factorin the mare=s injuries. AThere are certainly foals that are born that size thatdon't have this problem, and we also see foals that aremuch smaller than Rachel's foal that do,@ he said. Headded that her injuries are not uncommon in foaling. AIt=sa well-recognized potential complication,@ he noted. Rachel Alexandra=s first foal, born last year, is theCurlin colt Jess=s Dream, named in honor of Stonestreetfounder Jess Jackson. Rachel Alexandra=s own dam, theRoar mare Lotta Kim, has had foaling issues, but Woodiesaid he didn=t think the issues Rachel Alexandra facedwere hereditary. Rachel Alexandra is currently receiving antibiotics, fluids, nutrition and medications by IV, and is also beinggiven anti-inflammatory agents. Medications are alsobeing administered to aid in the prevention of scar tissuein the abdominal cavity. A standing lavage utilizingabdominal drains is also being performed several times aday. Stonestreet said it would provide continual updates inthe coming days on Rachel Alexandra=s condition. A winner of 13 of 19 starts and over $3.5 million inearnings, Rachel Alexandra won all eight of her startsduring an historic 3-year-old campaign in 2009, when hervictories included the GI Preakness S., GI Woodward S.,GI Haskell Invitational and GI Kentucky Oaks.

Boasting a perfect record in South Africa that earnedhim champion juvenile honors last term, Soft FallingRain=s campaignculminated in animpressive display inTurffontein's G1 SANursery in April. He hadadvertised his class withanother facile score in theseven-furlong UAE 2000Guineas Trial last timeJan. 17, and had notrouble maintaining hisunbeaten streak here.Soon up into a stalking second under Paul Hanaganhere, the enthusiastic racer took control passing thequarter pole and was driven out to assert his superiorityas Snowboarder made ground out wide to claim thesilver medal. "He is a really nice horse and we will haveto decide where he runs next,@ said winning ownerSheikh Hamdan. AThis 1600 meters really seems to suithim on this surface and we could stick to this trip. The[1900-meter Mar. 30 G2] UAE Derby is possible, but hehas a lot of speed. Wherever he runs here next, we arekeen to take him to England, and Royal Ascot would bea possibility for him." Trainer Mike de Kock added, AWewere a bit concerned about his stamina, but he hasseen it out well, and we will have to think about hisnext race.@

Woodbine to Restructure, Reduce Workforce Woodbine Entertainment Group has announced that itwill significantly restructure its operating model basedon new transitional agreements with the Ontariogovernment and the Ontario Lottery and GamingCorporation to continue live racing at the Etobicokeoval. The revenue from the new agreements will besignificantly less than previous agreements, resulting inthe need to take steps to reduce costs. The actions include the reduction of the WEGworkforce by 109 salaried and hourly positions. Thesereductions began in late 2012, and range fromexecutive personnel to front line employees.

Romans Maps Out a PlanCourtesy Gulfstream Park It was less than a month ago that Dale Romansreceived the Eclipse Award as champion trainer of 2012during ceremonies at Gulfstream Park for his work withstable stars such as Little Mike (Spanish Steps),Shackleford (Forestry), Dullahan (Even the Score) andSilver Max (Badge of Silver) to name a few. NowRomans is gearing up his stable to make nationalheadlines once again in 2013. The Louisville, Kentucky native has a number ofpromising 3-year-olds once again in his barn led by a

couple of sophomores ownedand bred by Sienna Farm LLC--the colt Dewey Square(Bernardini) and the filly PrivateEnsign (A.P. Indy). Both arenearing starts in graded stakesraces at Gulfstream with thegoal being a trip to ChurchillDowns the first weekend in Mayfor a start in the GI KentuckyDerby for Dewey Square and the

GI Kentucky Oaks for Private Ensign. Private Ensign isscheduled to start in the $250,000 GII Davona Dale S.Feb. 23, while Dewey Square is expected to run in the$150,000 GIII Palm Beach S. Mar. 3. Romans admits Private Ensign Atakes a big step up torun in the stakes," a race in which the likely favoritewill be Dreaming of Julia (A.P. Indy), a top 2-year-oldfilly developed last year by trainer Todd Pletcher. Dewey Square came to South Florida this winter witha big reputation after winning his first two starts inKentucky before a strong third-place finish in the GIIKentucky Jockey Club S. at Churchill Nov. 24. But he finished a distant seventh in the GIII Holy BullS. here Jan. 26 behind Itsmyluckyday (Lawyer Ron) andShanghai Bobby (Harlan=s Holiday) in his 3-year-olddebut. Romans and jockey Corey Lanerie attributed thedull try to not handling kickback. While Romans has notwavered in his faith in Dewey Square=s ability, he hasaltered plans on a schedule to get him to the Derby. AHe worked on the turf here [1:01 4/5 Feb. 10],@ saidRomans. AIt looked like he handled it just fine. He=s stillon the Derby trail, this race and then the Blue Grass.@The $750,000 GI Blue Grass S. will be run at KeenelandSaturday Apr. 13. While Romans prepares his 3-year-olds for their nextstart, he has nearly completed the serious training forolder stars Little Mike and Dullahan for their long trip toDubai to prepare for the Mar. 30 G1 Dubai World Cup. AThe plane leaves from Miami on Feb. 27," Romanssaid. "They=ll run in different races Mar. 9.@ Both raceswill be run on the synthetic Tapeta surface at Meydan.

Priscilla Vaccarezza=s 6-year-old gelding Little Mikeand Donegal Racing=s 4-year-old Dullahan, whobetween them won five Grade I stakes last year, haveposted a steady series of works over the Gulfstreamtrack in recent weeks ahead of their trip. While Dullahan will definitely go in the $10-millionDubai World Cup, a decision on Little Mike=s choice ofraces on World Cup Day will depend on how he handlesa synthetic surface for the first time Mar. 9. Also to berun on World Cup Day are the $5-million G1 DubaiSheema Classic at 1 1/2 miles on turf and $5-million G1Dubai Duty Free at 1 1/8 miles on turf. Romans won the 2005 renewal of the World Cupwith Ken and Sarah Ramsey=s Roses in May (Devil HisDue) after finishing second in the GI Donn H. behindSaint Liam (Saint Ballado), the latter going on to bevoted Horse of the Year that season. Another older star back for another season in theRomans barn will be Mark Bacon and Dana Wells= SilverMax, who posted his first workout of the year hereFeb. 9 (half-mile in :50 3/5). The 4-year-old won six straight races on turf lastyear, beginning with an allowance race early in theseason at Gulfstream before five straight stakes races, including the GII American Turf at Churchill, ArlingtonClassic and rich GII Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs inJuly.

Texas HORSE Survey Results Bleak for In-State Racing: The Texas Horse Organizations for Racing, Showingand Eventing have discovered, through a recent surveyof Texas horsemen, that a substantial portion of Texasracehorse breeders, owners, and trainers are leaving thestate to work elsewhere. Of the 287 horsemensurveyed, 81% currently race out of state, half saidthat 75% or more of their racing is conducted out ofstate and 43% said they will reduce their investmentsin Texas racing in 2013. AThis is very clear proof thatour Texas racehorse breeders, owners and trainers aremoving their racing operations primarily to thesurrounding states of Louisiana, New Mexico andOklahoma, where the purses and breeders awards aresignificantly increased by slot machines at theracetracks,@ said Dan Fick, executive director of TexasHORSE. Texas HORSE is asking that the Texaslegislation pass an amendment that will allow a statevote whether slot machines should be allowed at Texastracks, which could bolster Texas purses so they couldbe competitive with surrounding states.

CANDLE LIGHTS UP GOFFS ACTION Goffs= February Sale was enlivened by a well-connected member of Moyglare Stud=s draft yesterday, when Candle Lit (Ire) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) becamethe sole lot to reach six figures at the Kill venue whenselling for i100,000. Consigned as hip 444, theunraced 3-year-old has considerable residual valueemanating from one of the operation=s leading distaffbrigades. A three-parts sister to the triple Pattern-racescorer and 2010 G1 Irish St Leger runner-up ProfoundBeauty (Ire) (Danehill), her Listed-winning dam DiamondTrim (Ire) (Highest Honor {Fr}) is a full-sibling of the2002 G2 Ribblesdale S. heroine and G1 Prix de l=Operabridesmaid Irresistible Jewel (Ire) (Danehill) and hailsfrom the family of the similarly top-class PrincessHighway (Street Cry {Ire}) and Mad About You (Ire)(Indian Ridge {Ire}). Cathy Grassick, acting on behalf ofan existing client, prevailed as she had for anotherblueblood earlier in the afternoon.

That was the Castlebridge Consignment=s 5-year-oldMorning Bride (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), anotherunraced gem who is a full-sister to last year=s G2 Railway S. scorer Probably (Ire). Hip 373, whoselineage traces back to Doff the Derby and whose pagealso features more of last year=s luminaries in MoonlightCloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Hawaafez (GB)(Nayef), was secured for i40,000. A third high-profile purchase in the name of BrianGrassick Bloodstock was another from that draft in hip412, the winning 3-year-old Bay Laurel (Ire) (Baltic King{GB}) who is a half-sister to the dam of last term=s G1 July Cup hero Mayson (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).Also a half to the 2012 Listed scorer Bathwick Bear(Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), she was bought for i36,000. Interrupting the Grassick domination was Rosehill Stud, who paid i40,000 late in the session for CoolagownStud=s hip 472, the 10-year-old Mimiteh (Maria=s Mon).Covered by Showcasing (GB), she is a half-sister to lastyear=s unbeaten G1 Cheveley Park S. and G2 LowtherS. scorer Rosdhu Queen (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). With no stand-out mare to match last year=si500,000 record-setter Teo=s Sister (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}),the average was always likely to suffer and so itproved, with the cumulative figure of i9,729 down by27% on 2012. AThe Goffs February Sale is a regular market leaderand has again outperformed every other sale at thistime of year with a two-day sale of consistentvibrancy,@ Goffs Chief Executive Henry Beeby said.AWhilst some of the statistics may not have matchedlast year, we have returned a strong trade on both daysand welcomed another international audience to Goffsfollowing a coordinated approach from Goffs and IrishThoroughbred Marketing. The i500,000 top price of2012 was a real stand-out and it was always going tobe difficult to match, although we are very happy tosee our great supporters Moyglare top today with animpressive i100,000 to Cathy Grassick=s bid. The factis that this year has returned the second best set ofresults since the pre-downturn highs of February 2008and over 50 per cent ahead of 2011. Of course wewould have preferred to advance again in all sectors, but an improved clearance rate and steady median priceclearly show that we continue to develop the sale.@ Fullresults are available on www.goffs.com.

COUNTRY FACES ANOTHER BLANK SPELL Italy=s racing crisis has been upped a notch after itwas revealed that another strike could begin next Fridayif the government refuses to meet with industryleaders. Minister Mario Catania has been met with anultimatum from Rappresentanza Unitaria dell=Ipica, which is the umbrella group for owners, breeders, trainers, jockeys, stable staff and other professionalsbut which does not include the racecourses=organisation Federippodromi. While payment of arrearsfrom 2012 has been promised, it is set to be made overa three-year period and will affect the budgets for thatperiod. A statement from Rappresentanza Unitariadell=Ipica read: AWe require an urgent meeting withMario Catania, minister for agriculture, food andforestry, but if that does not happen we will, becauseof the lack of financial resources, stop all racing fromFebruary 22. The minister=s decision at the end ofJanuary to implement an act which put just i30 millioninto racing to cover a six-figure shortfall from 2012 wasunacceptable, as is the fact that it is being deductedfrom the 2013 budget. We are also calling for a stop tothe transmission of foreign races, as that is takingaway valuable betting turnover from Italian racing.@

SNOWDEN, SH. MOHAMMED REACH MILESTONE Trainer Peter Snowden scored his 1000th win forSheikh Mohammed in Australia Wednesday when Sail(Aus) (Canny Lad {Aus}) broke her maiden at Gosford.Starting in 2008, the conditioner has won an averageof 210 races per season, highlighted by 20 Group 1wins and 61 additional Group races for SheikhMohammed. APeter and his team have an extraordinarywork ethic,@ Henry Plumptre, Darley=s managing directorin Australia, said. ATheir high degree of horsemanshipand organization have been considerable contributingfactors. Peter oversees three training operations forSheikh Mohammed that include 120 racehorses atCrown Lodge, Warwick Farm; 88 at Osborne Park,Agnes Banks and 60 at Carbine Lodge, Flemington. Hehas a highly experienced team of assistants who runthose sites for him. It is Peter=s work ethic and thesupport that he receives from his team that delivers thesuccess for Sheikh Mohammed. We inherited somesignificant assets with the buyout of the Woodlandsracing and breeding operations, but none were moreimportant than Peter and the intellectual property hebrought to the table.@ John Ferguson, SheikhMohammed=s Bloodstock Advisor, added, "To havetrained 1000 winners in such a short time is quite anachievement. Sheikh Mohammed is very grateful toPeter and to all of our team and is looking forward tomany more winners in the years to come."
