During the month of November, the Church remembers its deceased
members in a special way. Our parish will offer a special remembrance
for all who have died in the LAST 12 MONTHS. There is a Book of
Remembrance in the Narthex for parishioners to enter the names of
deceased friends and relatives. The names written in the book will not
be read, but will be prayed for during the All Souls’ Day Mass.

A s we live in a world in which people are fleeing their homeland and seeking refuge in
unwelcoming countries, today’s readings from Exodus and the Gospel are particularly timely, serving as reminders of how God’s word calls us to love God and all God’s children, but especially the vulnerable, powerless, and poor. In biblical times, the prophets threatened God’s anger particularly at the neglect of widows and orphans who were reduced to lives of begging, starvation, and abuse. In modern times, it is refugees and immigrants, especially women and children, and the urban and rural poor who suffer violence, hunger, and death. Loving God and loving neighbor cannot be separated. Saint Paul reminds the Thessalonians that they became imitators of him and of the Lord after receiving the word of God, and thus they became models for all other believers in the vicinity. Then, they proclaimed it to others and embodied it in their lives. The word of God instructs us that we are all God’s children and calls us to care for each other. We must remember how much we have been given and ask: How can we imitate God’s generosity? How can we make a return to the Lord? —We Celebrate Worship Resource, Vol. 42, No. 2

La palabra rosario viene del latín y significa una guirnalda de rosas, siendo la rosa una de las flores utilizadas para simbolizar a la Virgen María. Si tuvieras que preguntar qué objeto es el más emblemático de los católicos, la gente probablemente diría: "El rosario, por supuesto". Estamos familiarizados con las
imágenes: los silenciosos labios en movimiento de la anciana tocando sus cuentas; el gran rosario que cuelga de la cintura de la monja calada; más recientemente, el rosario meramente decorativo que cuelga del espejo retrovisor.
Después del Vaticano II, el rosario cayó en relativo desuso. Lo mismo es cierto para las devociones marianas en general. Pero en los últimos años, el rosario ha vuelto, y no solo entre los católicos. Muchos protestantes ahora dicen el rosario, reconociéndolo como una forma verdaderamente bíblica de oración—después de todo, las oraciones que lo componen provienen principalmente de la Biblia.

The word rosary comes from Latin and means a garland of roses, the rose being one of the flowers used to symbolize the Virgin Mary. If you were to ask what object is most emblematic of Catholics, people would probably say, “The rosary, of course.” We’re familiar with the images: the silently moving lips of the old woman fingering her beads; the oversized rosary hanging from the waist of the wimpled nun; more recently, the merely decorative rosary hanging from the rearview mirror.
After Vatican II the rosary fell into relative disuse. The same is true for Marian devotions as a whole. But in recent years the rosary has made a comeback, and not just among Catholics. Many Protestants now say the rosary, recognizing it as a truly biblical form of prayer—after all, the prayers that comprise it come mainly from the Bible.
It’s commonly said that St. Dominic, the founder of the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans), instituted the rosary. Not so. Certain parts of the rosary predated Dominic; others arose only after his death.
Centuries before Dominic, monks had begun to recite all 150 psalms on a regular basis. As time went on, it was felt that the lay brothers, known as the conversi, should have some form of prayer of their own. They were distinct from the choir monks, and a chief distinction was that they were illiterate. Since they couldn’t read the psalms, they couldn’t recite them with the monks. They needed an easily remembered prayer. The rosaries that originally were used to count Our Fathers came to be used, during the twelfth century, to count Hail Marys—or, more properly, the first half of what we now call the Hail Mary. (The second half was added some time later.)
Both Catholics and non-Catholics, as they learn more about the rosary and make more frequent use of it, come to see how its meditations bring to mind the sweet fragrance not only of the Mother of God, but of Christ himself. From Catholic Answers

KIDS DAY: TRUNK OR TREATKIDS DAY: TRUNK OR TREAT You and your family are invited to “Trunk or Treat” on Sunday, October 29th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm in the Church parking lot. Kids are encouraged to come dressed in their costume (maybe their favorite saint) and trick or treat for candy or other treats from the trunks of cars. Parents and Parishioners are asked to participate by bringing their car, decorating it and filling it with treats for the kids. There will be games, food and drinks for all to enjoy. We have already found chewing gum in the carpet and several stains. We are asking everyone to do their part – please no chewing gum, food, coffee, or other beverages in the church. OIL OF THE SICKOIL OF THE SICK

The oil of the sick is used for the sacrament in the Catholic Church. Traditionally this oil is olive oil, but any vegetable oil will suffice. The bishop blesses fresh oil each year; in case of necessity, any priest may bless the oil for this sacrament. In the distant past lay people anointed the sick, but today only a priest or bishop may administer this sacrament.
This sick were anointed even at the time of Christ. In Mark 6:13, Jesus sent the disciples out to anoint the sick. James 5:14 urges the sick to send for the elders of the church for an anointing. The custom of anointing the sick continued, but for several hundred years only the dying were anointed. The priest prayed for their forgiveness and anointed them on seven different parts of the body.
The custom of blessing oil is ancient. One such prayer dates to fourth-century Egypt. In the Roman rite the oil came to be blessed at a Mass with the bishop. Today, a bishop blesses all three oils at the chrism Mass.
The priest anoints the forehead and the palms of the sick, while praying that God will save and raise them up. The anointing accompanies a prayer for physical and spiritual healing. The oil of the sick is sometimes kept in a container marked OI for oleum infirmorum, the oil of the sick. Almost every priest carries this oil in his car.

El aceite de los enfermos se usa para el sacramento en la Iglesia Católica. Tradicionalmente, este aceite es aceite de oliva, pero cualquier aceite vegetal será suficiente. El obispo bendice aceite nuevo cada año; en caso de necesidad, cualquier sacerdote puede bendecir el aceite para este sacramento. En el pasado, los laicos ungieron a los enfermos, pero hoy solo un sacerdote u obispo puede administrar este sacramento.
Este enfermo fue ungido incluso en el tiempo de Cristo. En Marcos 6:13, Jesús envió a los discípulos a ungir a los enfermos. Santiago 5:14 insta a los enfermos a enviar a los ancianos de la iglesia para una unción. La costumbre de ungir a los enfermos continuó, pero durante varios cientos de años solo los moribundos fueron ungidos. El sacerdote oró por su perdón y los ungió en siete partes diferentes del cuerpo.
La costumbre de bendecir el petróleo es antigua. Una de esas oraciones data del siglo IV de Egipto. En el rito romano, el aceite fue bendecido en una misa con el obispo. Hoy, un obispo bendice los tres óleos en la Misa Crismal.

Pray for members of the judiciary including judges, attorneys, and all members of the legal profession. During the Red Mass, Catholics reaffirm their commitment to justice and their faith.
