St. James the Apostle and Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic Parish with the Eucharist as the center of its life. Our mission, as disciples of Jesus Christ, is to build up the Kingdom of God by leading, nourishing and serving the community in Word and Sacrament.

FROM THE PASTORS’ DESK OCTOBER 29, 2017 Everybody knows the secular holiday of Halloween. But not everybody knows it derives from a holy day, All Saints' Day on November 1, which is followed by All Souls’ Day on November 2.

The root word of Halloween - ''hallow'' - means ''holy.'' The suffix "een" is an abbreviation of "evening." It refers to the Eve of All Hallows, the night before the Christian holy day that honors saintly people of the past. "All Saints is a celebration of the communion of saints, those people we believe are in heaven, through good works and God’s grace".

All Souls' Day is a day to pray for all souls. Among Catholics, prayers are offered for those in purgatory, waiting to get into heaven.

More than a thousand years ago in Ireland and Britain, a common custom of Christians was to come together on the eve of the feast of All Hallows Day to ask for God's blessing and protection from evil in the world. Often, they would dress in costumes of saints or evil spirits and act out the battle between good and evil around bonfires. That's the source of the modern observance of Halloween.

The Christian concept of the importance of the individual soul underlies All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, which are observed worldwide primarily in the Catholic and Anglican traditions. The ''Dia de los Muertos,'' or ''day of the dead,'' in Latin countries keeps alive some of the tradition of honoring souls of the dead. "All Hallows was considered a time when evil could manifest itself". "We do believe in the visible and the invisible. There is good and there is evil. There is invisible evil and invisible good. It’s an acknowledgement of that existence."

In the Catholic Church, November 1 is a holy day of obligation, when all Catholics are expected to attend Mass. Our Masses in St. James Church are October 31 at 7:30pm, November 1 at 7:30am, 9:00am, Noon and 7:30pm, and a Mass in Polish at Our Lady of the Lake at 7:30pm.

Readings for this Week - 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Exodus 22:20-26 - This passage enjoins all to adhere to specific religious and social laws. It urges all to act with justice and compassion towards others. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10 -Paul praises the Thessalonians for receiving the word of God so eagerly and totally. Word of their faithfulness has spread throughout Macedonia and Greece. Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40 - Matthew recounts the incident in which a lawyer, seeking to entrap Jesus, asks, “Teacher, which commandment of the law is the greatest?”

Readings for Next Week

First Reading: Malachi 1:14b—2:2b, 8-10 Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13

Gospel: Matthew 23:1-12

ST. SEBASTIAN’S TERRACE AND COLUMBARIUM

214 Purchased - 236 Niches Still Available 109 Cremains Interred

The price of a niche is $2,500, which allows you to inter the cremains of two people. We have celebrated Mass at the Altar of our Terrace and Columbarium many times. If you have questions or have been thinking of purchasing a niche, call Donna McCarthy at 845-225-2079 Ext. 105, on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday to schedule an appointment.

For those not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word, which describes a collection of niches to house urns containing, cremated human remains. The niches are usually inscribed with the person’s name and dates of birth and death. They are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a ‘churchyard’ and landscaped terrace. We pray that this holy ground becomes a final resting place for many of our loved ones.

Recognizing that ours is a partnership with parents, we ensure an environment where each individual has worth and deserves respect and dignity. Excellence in our school is the result of the commitment of time, effort and funds, which is shared by teachers, parents and the parish. St. James the Apostle School challenges students to develop academic excellence and inspires spirituality based on Gospel values, which give their lives passion and purpose. Clergy, administrators, teachers and parents are committed to the growth of the school and its active role in the community. All students are taught in a faith-based environment that instills self-discipline, respect for themselves and others, as well as responsibility.
