THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 29, 2017

BALANCE Today’s scriptures emphasize the fundamental link between love of God and love of our neighbors, especially those who are most in need. Love of God should compel us to love the people whom God cherishes. Conversely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God. That connection and balance, however, isn’t always easy to maintain in our lives. Even in religious orders we find that some Christians are more oriented toward contemplation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who are oppressed. Today Jesus reminds us of the necessity for both in the life of faith.

Dear brothers and sisters,

Last Saturday we had the Ministry Retreat for everyone in-volved in the various ministries of our parish. The purpose was to reflect on their call and commitment. Just like the priests who recharge their spiritual batteries through the an-nual retreat, all who minister to the Lord as stewards of God’s grace need to be renewed spiritually. Our ministries are not just about activities rather, about why we do what we do. The retreat helped everyone to be more convinced that it is not about ourselves but about God who called us to be His minis-ters. I am very happy to say that 86 of our ministers partici-pated in it and went home with renewed spirits. Now that our wintertime parishioners are coming back to en-rich our community of the people of God, we are starting a lot of programs intended to uplift our spirits in the Lord. It means that we need more people to get involved in the ministries. In a very special way I invite our new parishioners to see what ministries they can get involved in. The Fall Festival we have this weekend will energize our spirits to feel connected to the larger community and to extend to them our hospitality. In this context I would like to thank all of you for your gener-osity, especially for being aware of the needs of our parish and doing the best possible. It is because of your generosity that we are able to help a number of needy people with the dona-tions you make to our Social Ministry. Thank you also for thinking about our Debt Reduction and contributing towards it. I am glad to see that we love God and consider it our duty to be faithful stewards of God’s blessings. I wish and pray that we may be able to continue to do it all through the year. May God bless you and your families. Fr. Jose Kallukalam

Faith and Traditions TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This week we have in All Souls’ Day a com-memoration that is linked to the Halloween customs. The big-spending sugar shock holiday is a long way removed from Thurs-day’s grateful remembrance of the souls who are hidden from our sight, but alive to Christ. Old pagan superstitions might find us holding our breath when going by the graveyard, whereas others might actually go to the cemetery to tend the family graves, to share good food, and remember dear ones. Nowhere does a culture embrace this day as fully as in Mexico. The “Day of the Dead” is a national holiday that unfolds over three full days. For three thousand years, the indigenous people of Mexico have been mocking death in an annual festival, and the invading Spaniards were shocked at the spectacle. To the Aztecs, life was a dream, and death was the entry into full life. Skulls were thus a symbol of joy and release from life’s sor-rows. The missionaries found all this a bit creepy, but they moved the three-day feast from August to synchronize it with the Christian calendar. So today, graves are decorated, altars are built in the home to honor the family dead, children feast on candy skulls, and people dress up in elaborate skeleton outfits. The devout spend hours in the cemetery, and there is a lively sense of the communion of saints, the living and the dead.

Coming Events

PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY

The Catholic tradition is sacramental, filled with the conviction that community life and God’s grace are expressed in real actions insti-tuted by Christ. Within that Catholic tradition, priests represent Jesus’ actions and witness to the presence of the Lord in the Eucharist, in baptism, in the preaching of the word and n countless other ways large and small. As Pope John 11 said: “Without the priest, there is sim-ply no Catholic Church.” The lives of Catholic are touched and changed by God through the lives and actions of priests. “The sacraments, privileged moments in com-municating the divine life to man, are at the very core of priestly ministry.

“LIVING SAINTS MUSEUM” FOR

ALL SAINTS DAY” Please join the students of St. Michael Acad-emy on Wednesday, November 1st, as they transform the courtyard into a "Living Saints Museum" for All Saints Day.

Following the 8:30 Mass, students in the Third and Fourth Grade will share the story of their saints' lives in the courtyard with you. The Fifth Grade students have prepared dramatic "Saintly Skits" for everyone to relax and enjoy. We hope that you can join the St. Michael Academy students at Mass as we celebrate All Saints Day.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD

This is an age-appropriate Liturgy of the Word offered during the school year for preschoolers through 2nd grade at the 10:00am Mass. After the Opening Prayer, Father invites the children to receive a blessing before they pro-ceed to the sacristy. They are brought back into the Mass at the Preparation of the Gifts.

No pre-registration is necessary.
