Statement of Mission The Baptist College of Florida shall operate within the context of a Christian worldview to promote, provide for, operate and control a program of education and training for Christian leaders through awarding certificates and associate, baccalaureate and graduate degrees in a co-educational post-secondary setting. To fulfill its mission, the college seeks to develop those qualities in students that contribute to effective ministry. In the area of personal growth, we seek to foster a desire for knowledge; develop cultural awareness by introducing students to a wide range of knowledge; nurture the ability to acquire, evaluate, assimilate, and use information; and promote personal and social maturity. For spiritual growth, we provide the resources for gaining biblical and religious data; we also assist students in learning and living the Christian life. In terms of professional growth, students are enabled to gain the credentials that enhance opportunities for ministry, and they learn to master a specialized body of knowledge. At the same time, we encourage positive attitudes toward ministry and foster both an awareness of and a loyalty to the Southern Baptist heritage.

FROM THE DESK OF THE

PRESIDENTDear Friends,

It seems that another year has gone by very rapidly. Having the opportunity to report to you in view of the year that has passed and the one that is before us gives us a chance to pause and

celebrate our Lord’s blessings and fervently pray for His continued blessings in the year ahead of us.

For almost a year we have been working in the context of 20/20 Vision: A Focused Plan for a Brighter Future. During these months, our Lord has provided us with many examples of His abundant blessings. Currently we are in the final planning stages for the construction of a new Campus Dining Facility. Our cur-rent facility has been in use since 1969. That is an extremely long life for a commercial kitchen. Through a generous gift from friends of the College, we will be able to construct a new, state-of-the-art facility debt free. The new facility will provide top quality food for future generations of students. Other construction programs have begun with the demolition of six of our oldest student apartments, new roofs installed on several other student apartments, and the construction of the first building in the new Plant Operations Complex. We are off to a very good start.

The picture on the cover of this edition of Echoes is one that I took as I was headed out for an early morning appointment. As I looked at the image, I was reminded of the story of Benjamin Franklin’s comment at the conclusion of the U.S. Constitutional Convention. He said that during the long, and sometimes conten-

tious, meetings he had focused on the orb of the sun carved in the back of the chair occupied by George Washington. He had often asked himself whether it was a rising or a setting sun. Franklin then told the members of the Convention that he was absolutely convinced that it was a rising sun on a new day for America.

There are many today who proclaim that we are living in an age of a setting sun for Christianity, the church, our denomination and Christian higher edu-cation. They say that we are: Post Modern, Post Chris-tian, Post Church and Post Denomination. Well, in my humble opinion, a time that is Post Modern, Post Christian, Post Church and Post Denomina-tion is Perfectly Pre-Revival! We are in a time of a rising sun for educating and training the next greatest generation of Christian leaders, and we at The Baptist College of Florida are daily engaged in doing nothing less than that. We are doing that on our home cam-pus in Graceville as well as across Florida in Pensacola, Panama City, Orlando and Jacksonville. We are training leaders around the world through our Web-based delivery system. In Northeast Brazil we are training a second generation of church leaders. After hav-ing completed training approximately 200 church leaders, some of those leaders have come back and asked that we train folks who have been reached through the churches established by the first graduates. Thank God, He is continuing to work throughout the nations.

We are seeing great response to our Missions Aviation program. We already have more students than we had anticipated for the first year. On April 12-13, 2014, we will join with JAARS (the largest missions aviation organization in the world and the aviation arm of Wycliffe Bible Translators) to sponsor a Missions @ the Airport event at our Flight Training Center. This will provide interested individuals and churches with an opportunity to see missions avi-ation up close and personally. Please make plans to join us for this great event.

In another area of growth, I could not be more excited than I am about our Glory of God Christian Fine Art Program. Our Lord has provided us with the opportunity to share His glory through the talents of Keith Martin Johns and the students that he will be training. This program will provide greater opportunities for see-ing and sharing God’s glory. Also, it will provide an excellent and wholesome context in which Christians can study fine art.

Recently we received permission to expand our degree offerings through our Web-based delivery system as well as the first step toward approval for expanded delivery at our distance sites. This

will allow many more students to have the opportunity to study for a degree where they are living and serving. We also received approval from the National Association of Schools of Music to of-fer our Master of Arts in Music and Worship Leadership through a hybrid format. This will allow students to pursue top-quality grad-uate training in a ministry friendly setting.

While it is exciting and gratifying to list individual accomplish-ments over the past year, I must admit that I believe that the future for The Baptist College of Florida is far more than just the sum of these accomplishments. I am convinced that we are engaged in nothing less than the re-invention of the delivery sys-tem for Christian education. We are not re-inventing the message, but we are actively engaged in doing whatever is necessary for “Changing the World Through the Unchang-ing Word.®”

20/20 Vision: A Focused Plan for a Brighter Future is an absolutely essential response to what our Lord is doing in and through The Baptist College of Florida, and it is a far reaching plan for what He desires to do in and through us in the future.

The Sun is Rising, Because the Son Has Risen and Commis-sioned us. Your Baptist College of Florida is Called to and Calling For a Bold New Vision and a Faithful Closer Walk with our Master.

God Bless You,

Thomas A. KinchenPresident

ECHOES4

AN EVENING AMONG FRIENDS...

LAKESIDE ECHOThe Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM)

of The Baptist College of Florida (BCF) in Graceville hosted its second annual

Lakeside Echo performance on Thursday, Feb-ruary 20. Lakeside Echo is a dorm versus dorm team-building event held in the spring semes-ter providing students with a chance to show off their creative abilities and enjoy a fun break from studying.

Dorms spent months preparing for this event; deciding on and in some cases altering songs, creating costumes, gathering props, and most importantly practicing their performances so that when the time came, they could be well executed. Some creative dorm performances included guest appearances from different BCF faculty and staff members.

Dorms were judged based on specific crite-ria given to the five judges; Music and Worship Division Chair Bill Davis, Dean of Faculty and Theology Division Chair Robin Jumper, Direc-tor of Marketing and Admissions Sandra Rich-ards, and visiting BUDD missionaries Lynn Gay and Shelba Knight. According to the judges, all of the participants were amazing; however, the first, second, and third place awards went to the dorms with the highest scores based on the judging criteria.

Third place was awarded to the ladies of Courtyard House. For their performance, they reworked the lyrics to the song “Belle” from Beauty and the Beast, making it about the life of a BCF student, complete with ring-pops serving as engagement rings reflecting the number of BCF students that find spouses while in college.

Second place was awarded to Smith Hall. The men of Smith chose to sing and act out the song “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid. Female BCF student Shelsea Denson served as the lady that Smith resident, Ashton Rickman was being encouraged to ask out. At the end of the performance, Rickman worked up the courage to speak to Shelsea only to be chased off the stage by Shelsea’s brother and fellow

Smith resident Matthew Denson, as he shouted “That’s my sister!” providing laughs for every-one watching.

Earning first place was the Off Campus and Married Housing students presenting two songs from the popular musical Les Miserables. “Do you Hear the People Sing” and “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” were used to cleverly exaggerate the difficulty of Professor Mark Rathel’s exams. “Do you Hear the People Sing” was played as the students made their way to the stage (a classroom setting), agonizing along the way. However, Rathel awaited them on stage pass-ing out the dreaded test. When the exam was underway, the song “Empty Chairs at Empty Ta-bles” was sung by Donovan Higgins as his peers dropped to the floor, seemingly dying from the difficulty of the exam. Rathel laughed evilly as the students succumbed to his challenge, and after the last student had fallen to the floor, Rathel ended the performance with his signa-ture line on Fridays, “Have a Jesus weekend!”

Other performances of the night included Brackin-Chandler performing “Men in Tights” from Robin Hood, Napier and Eastlake join-ing together for their rendition of “Trashin’ the Camp” from Tarzan, Lakeside Hall with a compilation of every song from The Lion King in seven minutes, and Ogletree House with a skit based on The Wizard of Oz. Ogletree’s clas-sic performance ended the night by returning dorm flags which had been mysteriously disap-pearing throughout the first few weeks of the semester.

The first place trophy was awarded by BCF President Thomas A. Kinchen and flowers from BCF’s First Lady Ruth Ann Kinchen were pre-sented to BCM Director Ashley Lain. The over-all word from the judge’s box was that all of the BCF students were winners! The intent of the team building night full of fun and laughter offered a nice respite from the long hours stu-dents spend studying.

A GREAT TIME WITH FAMILY - THE DETAILS OF

SPRING PREVIEW DAY

PANAMA CITY:WELCOMES BCFThe Baptist College of Florida (BCF) in

Graceville and President Thomas A. Kinchen were welcomed by officials and

local leaders to the Panama City area on Thurs-day, January 30, celebrating BCF’s Distance Site located at the Family of God Baptist Church. Family of God Senior Pastor Kenric Conway, who also serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at BCF, and Site Director Samuel Jack-son joined in the festivities advocating the posi-tive impact of BCF in the Panama City area.

According to Jackson, “Faith plays a big part in the lives of the people in the Panama City, Bay County region. With The Baptist College of Florida making an investment and commit-ment in our community, Christian leaders and future leaders have a tremendous opportunity to learn and grow without ever leaving home.”

“The college’s purpose of ‘Changing the World Through the Unchanging Word®’ is always carried out in communities,” stated BCF President Kinchen. “As individual lives are changed, communities are changed. And

as communities are changed our world is changed. It begins and ends with people. We are absolutely delighted to have this enhanced opportunity to impact lives in the Panama City community.”

In addition to the BCF representatives in attendance, the celebration at the A. D. Harris Learning Village included Panama City May-or Greg Brudnicki, Commissioner Kenneth Brown, School District Director of Operational Support Services John Haley, prospective stu-dents and other community leaders and media personnel.

While the Panama City site has been opera-tional for several semesters, there are still many who are unaware of the educational opportu-nities available through the college in Panama City. For more information on the BCF classes held at the Family of God Baptist Church locat-ed at 901 E. U.S. 98, contact Site Director Sam-uel Jackson at 850.769.4021 or e-mail [email protected].

BCF President Thomas A. Kinchen with Panama City Mayor Greg Brudnicki.

Registration began in BCF’s Wellness Center where prospec-tive students began their day exploring information about the Library, Intramurals, Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM),

men’s dorms, women’s dorms, IT, Financial Aid, and visiting with representatives from all of the different degree programs offered at the college. Campus guests were able to meet and talk with current students and professors and receive answers to any questions they had on degree requirements and campus activities. Strategically

located in the corner of the Wellness Center was a very popular photo booth giving prospective students an opportunity to have their pictures taken with fun props and new friends capturing the memories of the day.

The day concluded with Ivy Croom from Ashford, Alabama and Jay Goins from Orlando, Florida winning $500 scholarships presented during a drawing held on Preview Day (pictured right). Over 80 students visited the college during the open house event.

Plans for next semester’s Preview Day on October 24, 2014 are already underway. To learn more about BCF, call 850.263.3261 ext. 460 or visit the website at www.baptistcollege.edu. To see pictures from the photo booth, visit the school’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/baptistcollege.
