Momentum

A lot hAs hAPPened since we lAunched the hebRew chARteR school centeR in 2009. Our first school, the Hebrew Language Academy Charter School in Brooklyn, opened that year and today serves nearly 500 students from a variety of economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Since then we’ve opened five similar schools – in Harlem, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., and two in California. HCSC schools weave the study of Hebrew language and of Israel into a robust educational program.

Our newest school will open in Minneapolis in 2015, and we are actively exploring the creation of additional schools in New York City, as well as in cities such as Boulder, Detroit, and Atlanta.

This momentum is no accident. We are building a movement of academically rigorous dual-language charter schools across America that teach children of all backgrounds to become fluent and literate in Modern Hebrew and prepare them to be productive global citizens.

Right now, more than 1,200 children are being educated in our schools across the country, but our vision is to someday serve tens of thou-sands of students each year. As you look through this report, we invite you to renew your commitment to be a vital part of this exciting venture, or, if you have not yet joined us, to strongly consider doing so – we’d love to have you at our side!

Sara Berman, Chair of the Board

from the president

in this, my fiRst PResident’s RePoRt since joining hcsc in jAnuARy, i Am PRoud to shARe so much good news with you. In the few short years since we began building this American network of dual-language Hebrew charter schools, we have seen quite a lot of progress:

1,253 children are now learning in our six schools across the country, in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.

Our schools are wonderfully diverse, with students from a wide array of racial, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Hundreds of children are speaking, reading, and writing Modern Hebrew with great proficiency – something that always brings smiles of delight to the faces of native Hebrew speakers who visit our schools.

Our students’ academic performance continues to be very strong, as shown in the most recent round of state tests.

90 new HCSC alumni – our very first graduating classes from He-brew Language Academy and Hatikvah – are now in middle schools, and we are working to stay closely connected to them as they grow into ambassadors for the HCSC mission.

I hope you enjoy reading this report, and see in it what I see: the story of a growing and vital movement of schools. I am confident that we will make more contributions in the years to come, as we become an increas-ingly important presence in the worlds of dual-language instruction, diverse schooling, Israel and global studies, and charter schools.

the hebRew chARteR school centeR is building the hebrew public charter school movement in America. created in 2009, hcsc helps to launch and sustain schools around the country. our network’s schools provide a robust academic program that immerses students in the hebrew language, teaches about the history and culture of israel and its immigrant communities, and emphasizes students’ commitments to each other, to their communities, and to the world.

Academic model The first priority in our schools is to provide excellent learning op-portunities for every child. HCSC supports schools in training their teachers to differentiate instruction so that every child grows to his or her full academic potential. HCSC schools track student learning to make sure each child acquires foundational skills in literacy and math so that they can excel in all of their subjects. Our two oldest schools (and the only ones in our network that currently have tested grades) have shown strong results on state exams. And our students’ global awareness and proficiency in Hebrew set them apart from their peers in other schools. We are always striving to sharpen both our program model and its implementation so that our schools and students accelerate their growth.

Page 10: HCSC President's Report 2014

growth of the networkOur vision is to create dozens of excellent schools across the United States, serving tens of thousands of students. We started small in 2009 with our first elementary school, Hebrew Language Academy in Brook-lyn, which in its first year served 150 students. We have had nearly ten-fold growth in the five years since then, serving 1,253 students in six schools in three states and the District of Columbia. We’re ready to launch our first middle school programs, and to open new schools (including a seventh in 2015 in Minnesota). But to sustain that pace of growth requires a committed, focused effort from HCSC staff, community partners and leaders, and a growing number of sup-porters.

diversityIn many of our nation’s communities, racial and economic isolation continue unabated, and children go through years of schooling without encountering, working with, or befriending peers from other back-grounds. We believe that schools should be places not only of rigorous education, but also of meaningful integration – indeed, that the two go hand-in-hand. As our students learn about the world around them, they do so in school environments that are manifestly diverse and that reflect our commitment to serve students from all backgrounds. We use a variety of practices – from careful site selection to expansive community outreach to thoughtful program design – ensuring that HCSC schools are among the most diverse in the nation. As a reflec-tion of our commitment to diversity, we have joined the newly-formed National Coalition of Diverse Charter Schools. Going forward, we need our supporters to continue to spread the word that Hebrew Charter School Center schools are for all.

WHy HatikvaH? ❤ The Lins were new to the neighborhood; a neighbor’s daughter was

attending Hatikvah and was very positive and excited about the school In a meeting with

the school, the Lins learned teachers were very willing to help Edessa get up to

speed (she had not attended kindergarten) and they decided Hatikvah was

the best choice

BenefitS of HatikvaH ❤ Edessa has a greater appreciation for the Hebrew language and

Israeli culture and hopes to visit Israel one day The school is very community

service oriented, engaging students in projects and activities related to the community

aneCdote ❤ Edessa is somewhat shy but very relational Her teacher noticed her personality and

took the time to pair her with another girl who had a similar personality They have been best

friends ever since She has benefited greatly from that friendship and has thrived at school partially

because of her teacher’s individual attention

hebrew studiesFrom the very first day of school all of our children are greeted by Hebrew teachers who speak to them in Modern Israeli Hebrew. Very quickly, they start to answer their teachers’ questions using Hebrew words and, before long, speak in sentences. The goal of our Hebrew language instruction is for students to speak, read, write, and understand the Hebrew that is used throughout Israel and by Hebrew speakers around the world. We train Hebrew teachers in the Profi-ciency Approach and assess students’ language acquisition progress throughout the year. In 2009, when we had a single school, we had only four teachers of Hebrew; now, in 2014, our six schools employ 60. Finding and training an ever-increasing number of teachers who are fluent Hebrew speakers is one of our big challenges, and we continue to build new partnerships in both the U.S. and in Israel to ensure we have the pipeline of talent that our students deserve.

israel and global studiesOne of HCSC’s key goals is for students to learn about the culture and history of Israel. We have created a curriculum that incorporates the study of Israel with the study of world geography, culture and history. As our children learn the continents of the world, they come to know stories of people who have immigrated to Israel from each continent. This learning happens at the same time that they trace their own family’s origins and how they came to live in the United States. When children learn about holidays and cultural celebrations around the world, teachers explain how different countries celebrate their culture and compare these events with similar celebrations in the U.S. and Israel. Going forward, we are deepening this curriculum for current grade levels and expanding it to meet the needs of middle school learners.
