Award-winning author Daniel Woodrell, who wrote Winter’s Bone, the novel on which the 2010 film was based, will read at SCC at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, in the auditorium of the Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building.

In addition to his comments, Woodrell will read an excerpt, answer questions and will sign copies of his book, available for purchase at the event through the SCC Bookstore.

A film screening of Winter’s Bone, starring Jennifer Lawrence and nominated for Academy Awards, Golden Globes and others, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18. Both events are free and open to the public. The film is rated R.

Five of Woodrell’s eight published novels were selected as New York Times Notable Books of the Year. Tomato Red won the PEN West Award for the Novel in 1999. Woodrell grew up in St. Charles, Mo., and now lives in the Ozarks near the Arkansas line with his wife, Katie Estill.

Award-winning author Daniel Woodrell will read at SCC on Feb. 20

The deadline to apply for Foundation scholarships for the 2014-15 school year at SCC is fast approaching. Application packets are due by 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, to Enrollment Services in the Administration Building, Room 1113.

Application packets and recommendation forms can be found at stchas.edu/scholarships, outside the auditorium of the Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building or in Enrollment Services. Students who submit official application packets are eligible for more than 40 scholarships, based on specific criteria.

SCC students benefit from nearly $65,000 in Foundation Scholarships awarded each year at SCC. “We are so thankful for our donors who believe in the power of education and make our scholarship program possible,” said Betsy Schneider, SCC director of development.

“Education is so important, and we are excited to have the opportunity to offer scholarships to such hard-working students,” said Schneider.

Three new scholarships will be awarded for the 2014-15 academic year:Blattell & Associates Scholarship

Blattell & Associates is a St. Peters based financial planning firm. Bob Blattell has been an instructor of Continuing Education financial courses for more than 20 years. The Blattells believe in the transformative power of education and wanted to make a difference for an SCC student by establishing a scholarship.Cottleville Firefighters Community Organization (CFCO) Scholarships

The CFCO established two new scholarships this year, each worth $1,000. These scholarships will be used for students who are studying to become first responders. Health Information Technology Scholarship

A new scholarship fund has been created to support students studying to work in the Health Information Technology field. There are a number of donors contributing to this fund and the number of scholarships will be based on the amount of funding available in March.

SCC enrollment for the spring 2014 semester outpaced budget predictions of -5 percent. As of Feb. 11, which is the college census date used for state reporting, enrollment for the term stood at 6,921 headcount and 65,847 credit hours, a decrease of 4.4 and 4.8 percent, respectively, compared to the spring 2013 semester.

Other figures of note include an increase in first-time freshman enrollment, 22.7 percent, and first-time freshmen credit hours, 14.7 percent.
