The institute toda y show s a very high level of ene rgy a nd eng ag em ent o f a ll sec tions: fac ulty,
students and staff. Visitors to the Institute in the evenings are often surprised to see a
disproportionately large number of students engaged in sports such as basket ball and
volleyball. No wonder, despite a rather small student body, our students have been doing
extremely we ll in the inte r-IIT Sports me et for the last tw o yea rs. This high leve l of engagem ent o f
our students is visible in all facets: organization of cultural and technical events, social work, resea rc h a nd design p rojec ts outside the c urric ulum, a nd in-class partic ipa tion.
IIT Ga ndhinagar today ta kes tremend ous pride in its student bod y for its ma turity a nd
lea dership skills. We a re c onfident tha t the se yo ung me n a nd wo me n w ill not on ly b ring glory to
the Institute in the years ahead, but will also be instrumental in changing the society, both

mission a nd vision o f the Institute . Som e o f our rec ent initiatives are:
Foundation Programme for Self Development: In the Fa ll semeste r of 2011, IITGN will be
introducing a Foundation Programme that will require all new undergraduate students to
und ergo an intense five-we ek prog ramme to d eve lop their life-skills. The ide a is to he lp the
students make a smooth transition from the days of single-minded preparation for the JEE to a
new phase in life that would ultimately shape them to be well-rounded human beings,
outsta nd ing eng ineers and responsible c itizens. This p rog ramme will be a signific antenhanc em ent of a one-wee k orienta tion p rog ram me tha t the Institute has be en c ond ucting
very effec tively for the last tw o yea rs, that c onsists of w orkshop s on c om munica tion, thea tre,
ap prec ia tion of a rc hitec ture, and va rious ga me s tha t see k to inculca te team spirit.
Curricular Initiatives: A brand new curriculum that is a significant departure from any other
c urriculum in the c ountry is being introd uc ed from July 2011. The ne w c urriculum fo c uses on the
