    Paradigm shift in our entire management philosophy. On one side merit is

    rewarded and encouraged at all levels, while on the other side, adequate

    supp ort system is provided to tho se w ho ne ed one .

    The institute toda y show s a very high level of ene rgy a nd eng ag em ent o f a ll sec tions: fac ulty,

    students and staff. Visitors to the Institute in the evenings are often surprised to see a

    disproportionately large number of students engaged in sports such as basket ball and

    volleyball. No wonder, despite a rather small student body, our students have been doing

    extremely we ll in the inte r-IIT Sports me et for the last tw o yea rs. This high leve l of engagem ent o f

    our students is visible in all facets: organization of cultural and technical events, social work,resea rc h a nd design p rojec ts outside the c urric ulum, a nd in-class partic ipa tion.

    IIT Ga ndhinagar today ta kes tremend ous pride in its student bod y for its ma turity a nd

    lea dership skills. We a re c onfident tha t the se yo ung me n a nd wo me n w ill not on ly b ring glory to

    the Institute in the years ahead, but will also be instrumental in changing the society, both

    tec hnolog ic ally a nd otherwise.

    IIT Ga nd hinag ar (IITGN) b eg an its journey a s one o f the younger Ind ian Institutes of Tec hno logy in

    Aug ust 2008. The Institute c urrently offe rs a four-yea r B.Tec h programme in Chemical,

    Elec tric al, and Mechanical engineering, and two-year M.Tec h programme in Civil and

    Chemical Eng ineering. We offer PhD programm es in seve ra l disc iplines of Engineering , Sc iences,

    and Humanities & Soc ial Sc ienc es. The c ourses dwe ll on d eve lop ing the ability for p hysic a l and

    analytic a l mo delling , design and deve lop me nt whic h a lso involves rigo rous prac tica l training.

    While the stud ents c an ga in more in-dep th know led ge in their d isc ipline throug h Honours, they

    also g et a n op portunity to b roa den the ir pe rspec tives throug h Minors in othe r fields (Com puter

    Sc ienc e, Ma nage me nt). The students are e nc ourag ed for internships during the summ er brea ks

    to g a in experienc e a t va rious universities and industries in Ind ia a nd abroad . The o b jec tive is to

    p repare the stud ents not just fo r their first job , but the ir last job as we ll.

    All Chemical Engineering unde rgrad ua te stud ents a re required to ta ke a lab orato ry co urse in

    ea c h sem ester from 3rd to 7th sem ester. The Chemica l Engineering laborato ry includes

    experimental set up on Unit Operations, Reaction Engineering , and Process Dynamics. The

    c urrent fac ilities include Doub le p ipe/ Co iled / Plate / Fluid ized / Fin-Tub e Hea t Excha ngers,

    Chemical Rea c tors, Differential d istilla tion set up, Pac ked-b ed absorption c olumn, Sieve -plate

    d istilla tion co lumn, Interac ting / noninterac ting tanks set up , Calorime ter and refrac tom ete r, and

    Ba tc h d ryer. The labora tory a lso has seve ral set ups to dem onstrate the basic p rinc iples of fluid

    flow suc h a s flow me asuring device s, ce ntrifuga l pumps and p ipe fittings app ara tus etc . The

    facility is being further expanded to include experiments based on Process Controls and

    Advanc ed Sep aration Tec hniques.

    The present Che mic a l Eng ineering fac ulty has resea rch inte rests in the fields of Partic le Forma tion

    for Drug Delivery, Bioc hem ica l Engine ering, and Systems Biology. A separate research

    laboratory has been provided for their research activities. A Particle Size Analyzer (Coulter

    Priva te Ltd ) and an Optical Mic rosc ope with Cam era fac ility (Nikon) have be en p roc ured to

    build a Particle Formation research facility. A Freeze dryer (Martin Christ), Zeta-sizer (PSS

    NICOMP) and Peristaltic Pumps (Watson Marlow) have also been procured. A particle sizeana lyzer to c ha rac terize g aseo us mic ro-bub b les and liquid d rop suspensions and high p ressure

    vessels for particle formation using high pressure carbon dioxide. A High Pressure Liquid

    Chromatography (HPLC) syste m (Wa te rs), a Gas Chroma tography (GC) system (Perkin Elmer),

    Fermentor (Sartorious), Microp late Reade r (TECAN), Polymerase Chain Rea c tion Thermoc yc ler

    (Eppendorf), Deep Freezer (-86C) (Thermo Fisher Sc ientific ) a nd other b asic b iolog y lab ora tory

    utilities have b een proc ured for Biochemica l and Biomo lecular Engineering research.

    Elec tric a l Engineering c urrently offers one labo ra tory c ourse to all undergrad uate stud ents and

    five additional laboratory courses to only Electrical Engineering undergraduate students.

    Experiments include basic studies of characteristics of semiconductor devices, active filters &

    Sc hmitt trigger, digita l circ uits, building c ounte rs & shift reg isters, time r circ uits and ana log-to-

    d igital c onve rters, microp roc essor a nd microc ontroller based expe riments, c ha rac teristics of

    electric motors and generators, speed control of motors, synchronization of alternator with

    infinite b us or ano ther alternato r, pe rformanc e o f various po we r elec tronic c onve rters.

    The labo ratory fac ility inc ludes Xilinx FPGA kits and ISE software that is being used for several

    undergrad ua te lab orato ries and p rojec t work. The lab orato ry is eq uippe d w ith ARM, PICcontroller, AVR and microc ontroller b oards, digital storage oscilloscopes, digital multimeters

    and IC testers, Universal IC Programm er, Sco peCorder, Precision Ma gne tic Analyzer and all

    other elec tric a l eng ineering lab ora tory utilities. In a dd ition , the Power Systems Simulation

    Lab oratory has PSCAD software licensed for 25 nodes. The c urrent Elec tric a l Eng ineering fa c ulty

    ha s research interests in Image Processing , Power Systems, Rene wable Energy , VLSI and Fibre-

    op tic sensors. The c urrent resea rc h fac ilities include transforme rs of d ifferent w inding g eo me try.

    IITGN ha s c ollab ora tion w ith Cadence und er its University Prog ram me. The VLSI de sign resea rchand d eve lop me nt work grea tly be nefits from this c ollaboration throug h the ava ilability of many

    too ls and fac ilities p rovide d by Ca denc e. A Fibre-op tics lab is a lso b eing d eve lope d for resea rc h

    in the field o f op tica l sensor tec hnology.

    Mec hanica l Engineering c urrently o ffers five undergrad ua te laborato ry c ourses. All first ye a r

    und ergrad ua te stud ents a re req uired to take a laborato ry course o n Workshop Prac tice. The

    Manufacturing Laboratory has facilities including lathes, milling machine, vertical machining

    c entre, elec tric disc harge ma c hine, we lding, fitting a nd tin smithy eq uipme nt. It is also b eing

    used for two laborato ry c ourses on Ma nufac turing Prac tices and Proc esses for sec ond and third

    yea r Mec hanica l Engineering stud ents. It is a lso being used as a wo rkshop for fab ric a tion o f

    undergraduate student projects as well as research related equipment and accessories.

    Coordinate mea suring m ac hine(CMM) and profile p rojec tor have b een a cq uired as pa rt of

    Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory (AML). An assoc iate d Me c ha nica l Systems Design

    Laboratory (MSDL) is a lso being deve loped . The Solid Mechanics laboratory has two MTS

    Universal Testing Ma chines of 100 kN and 200 kN ca pac ity, Charpy impa ct testing m ac hine of

    450J c ap ac ity, Torsion testing ma chine (500 Nm) and Rockwell and Vickers hardness testing

    machines (Zwick Roell), and a Fatigue testing ma chine. The Fluid M ec ha nics lab ora tory ha s

    setup s for cond uc ting experime nts on fluid sta tics and fluid dynam ics.

    The c urrent Mec ha nica l Eng ineering fac ulty resea rc h inte rests includ e Aerodynamics, Flight

    Mechanics, Fluid-Structure Interac tion, Polymer Co mp osites, Dynamics and Control of Fluid-Therma l Systems, Hydrodyna mic Stab ility and Computa tional Mod eling o f Engineered Systems.

    INNOVATIONS AT IITGN

    INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOG Y GANDHINAGAR

    IITGN a spires to be a lea der and a trend-sette r in educ a tion. In this end ea vour, we

    enthusiastically encourage all novel educational initiatives consistent with the core values,

    mission a nd vision o f the Institute . Som e o f our rec ent initiatives are:

    Foundation Programme for Self Development: In the Fa ll semeste r of 2011, IITGN will be

    introducing a Foundation Programme that will require all new undergraduate students to

    und ergo an intense five-we ek prog ramme to d eve lop their life-skills. The ide a is to he lp the

    students make a smooth transition from the days of single-minded preparation for the JEE to a

    new phase in life that would ultimately shape them to be well-rounded human beings,

    outsta nd ing eng ineers and responsible c itizens. This p rog ramme will be a signific antenhanc em ent of a one-wee k orienta tion p rog ram me tha t the Institute has be en c ond ucting

    very effec tively for the last tw o yea rs, that c onsists of w orkshop s on c om munica tion, thea tre,

    ap prec ia tion of a rc hitec ture, and va rious ga me s tha t see k to inculca te team spirit.

    Curricular Initiatives: A brand new curriculum that is a significant departure from any other

    c urriculum in the c ountry is being introd uc ed from July 2011. The ne w c urriculum fo c uses on the

    ove ra ll deve lop me nt of the stud ents and will p rep are the m fo r their last job, ra ther than fo c us on

    their first job . It w ill have a sign ific ant c om po nent of hum anities and soc ial sc ienc e, c om pulsory

    c oursew ork in life-sc ienc es, signific ant exposure to d esign and c rea tivity, and p rovide flexibility

    to the stud ents.

    Internationa l Fac ulty: The Institute is enthusiastic a bout b ring ing internat iona l fac ulty on boa rd. A

    Ge rma n c ollea gue joined the Institute in Dec em ber 2010 for a yea r and is c urrently tea c hing a

    c ourse o n Am eric an Litera ture. Two Swiss p rofessors from EPFL ha ve taug ht c ourses on Co mpute r

    Sc ienc e in the Spring sem ester of 2010-11. Further, a signific ant num ber of fa c ulty memb ers ofInd ian origin but ho lding c itizenships of o the r c oun tries ha ve a lrea dy joined the Institute.

    Projec t-Based Lea rning: The Institute p lac es great em pha sis on stud ents und ertaking p rojec ts of

    interest to them o utside the c urriculum. It is hea rtening to see our stud ents und erta king exc iting

    p rojec ts in Fire Eng ineering , Biome d ica l Eng ineering a nd the like, under the m entorship o f fac ulty

    from no t on ly within the Institute b ut a lso from top institutions wo rldwide.

    Liberalization in Branc h Change Polic y: To p rovide an environm ent whe re students a re free to

    deve lop the ir passions, IITGN fo llow s the most libera l po lic y for b ranc h c ha nges a fter the first

    year. We also have a formal structure to convey the excitement, promise, and relevance of

    ea c h b ranc h of e ngineering to o ur stud ents. The Institute has ac hieved the unique d istinction of

    being a b le to a c c om mo da te a ll req uests from our stud ents for a c hange of b ranc h last yea r. This

    is p rob ab ly the first t ime in the history of the IIT system tha t suc h a policy has bee n suc c essfully

    implemented.

    Comprehensive Viva-Voce: The Institute ha s introd uc ed a c om prehe nsive viva-voc e to

    identify talents and we aknesses of stud ents ea rly. The stud ents are enc ouraged to p ursue theirta lents vigourously and to address a reas of c onc ern without hesitation . This is a ma nd a tory pass/

    no-pass activity conducted every semester for all the undergraduate students by a panel of

    fac ulty. It enab les the Institute to understand its stud ent b od y be tter and to estab lish one -on-one

    c onnec tions by g iving a ttention a nd feed ba c k to ea c h individua l, and assess our teac hing-

    lea rning am bience .

    Emphasis on Physical Educ ation : With firm belief in the truism tha t a hea lthy mind lives in a hea lthy

    body, the Institute has introduced a demanding physical education component in the

    c urric ulum. All und ergrad ua te students must enga ge in forma l sports ac tivity a t lea st five d ays a

    we ek d uring the first tw o sem esters a t the Institute. This p rogramm e ha s bee n very effe c tive in

    rekind ling the passion fo r sports and outd oo r ac tivities in the stud ents. This is very imp orta nt

    bec ause, fo r several years befo re joining IIT, ma ny stud ents shun a ll forms of extra -curricular

    ac tivities and c onfine themselves on ly to stud ies.

    Short-Courses: IITGN ha s sta rted a Short-Co urse Series for the we ll-round ed growth o f thestud ents. Eac h suc h Short-Co urse ha s a duration o f 8-10 hours, and is c onduc ted by a g uest on a

    top ic d ifferent from the sub jec ts in the reg ula r curric ulum. Eac h c ourse ea rns the students one

    c red it (mentioned in the g rade c ard) a nd is voluntary on pa rt of the students. Som e o f our rec ent

    Short-Courses ha ve b ee n on Ind ian Demo c rac y, Entrep reneurship, Energy Efficienc y, Literature,

    and Co smo log y. These c ourses a re o pen to stud ents and fac ulty of o ther co lleg es in the c ity so a s

    to d evelop b etter ac ad em ic links and c ontribute to the c omm unity.

    ENTHUSIASM AND THE INSTITUTE

    Amalthea : In Oc tob er 2010, the stud ents a t IITGN orga nized Ama lthea , a two -da y co nc lave on

    Renewa b le Energy. The e vent inc luded sessions on solar, wind and bio-energy a nd a numb er of

    pane l d isc ussions. The event wa s supported by almo st a ll ma jor c om panies assoc iate d w ith

    renew ab le energy in Ind ia throug h lec tures, sponsorships, or both. Numerous em inent spea kers

    shared their knowled ge and vision w ith the stud ents. The event o nc e a ga in p rove d theextrao rd ina ry leve l of ma turity and lea dership o f our young students.

    Comm unity Outreac h: The Institute is strong ly co mm itted to sensitizing stud ents to the need s of the soc iety a nd

    mo tivate the m to c ontribute in small wa ys from a n ea rly ag e. With this intent ion, the IITGN c om munity is c urrently

    involved in two ma jor initiatives. Since Aug ust 2010, a te am o f our girl stud ents ha ve b ee n spend ing 3 hours eve ry

    we ekend with 75 girl stud ents from Sakar Sc hoo l, Ahmed abad to e nthuse the m a bo ut Sc ience and

    Ma them atics. In Janua ry 2011, mem bers of IITGN c om munity sta rted Nyasa , a p rog ramm e to a ddress the hea lth

    and e duc a tion need s of c onstruc tion workers and their fam ilies on c amp us. As pa rt of Nyasa, they orga nized a

    huge c om munity lunc h, held c lothe s c ollec tion drives, and d istributed wo ollen c lothes in winter. Currently, the

    Nyasa team hosts 2-hour play-sessions with the c hild ren o f c onstruct ion workers eve ry Sund ay.

    Cultural Activities: Cultural activities include amusic c lub , which arrange s for instruc tion in voc al

    and instrumental music and organizes cultural

    functions and c omp etitions pe riod ic ally, a d anc e

    club, a cinematic club, a drama club and a

    pho tog rap hy club. The e ntire stude nt bo d y

    en thu siastic a lly c ele b rat e s a ll fe stiva ls like

    Rep ublic & Indep end enc e Da ys, Gand hi Jaya nti,Holi, Dushehra, e tc .

    SPORTS AT IITGN

    A host of sports fac ilities a re a vailab le to the students on c amp us inc luding badminton, tab le

    tennis, vo lleyb a ll, c ric ket, ba sketb a ll and fo otba ll. A sta te-of-the-a rt Gym na sium with instruc tors

    is also availab le in the c amp us. Coa c hing for Law n Tennis and Swimming is p rovide d a t ONGC

    and Sports Authority of India, respec tively. A qua lified full-time p hysica l ed uc ation instruc tor and

    severa l pa rt-time c oa c hes have b een app ointed to train the students. The stud ents ac tively

    participate in inter-departmental as well as inter-college competitions. Despite being a small

    stud ent bo dy, our stud ents have show n e xem p la ry p erforma nc e in inter-IIT c om pe titions and

    have ea rned m ed als.

    A ve ry unique a ll night intra-c ollege sports festival Halla Bol wa s organised a t IITGN, which sawmo re tha n 1500 registrations. Stud ents enjoye d p laying 11 fun ga me s rang ing from Kho-Kho to

    Tug of Wa r to Touc h Rugby till 2 AM in the m orning. Mo re tha n 30 organizers and 60 volunte ers

    wo rked for 10 da ys to ensure the suc c ess of t he eve nt.

    TECHNICAL ACTIVITIESRobotics: The Rob ot ics Club a t IIT Ga nd hinag ar is a group of

    students from a variety of different engineering disciplines whoare working together on robotics research and education. It

    provides a hands-on environment for students to use and

    develop their engineering skills, while at the same time having

    fun. The p urpose o f this Rob otics c lub is to prom ote indep end ent

    supplemental learning to the existing engineering curriculum.

    Stud ents wo rk on va riety o f prob lem sta tem ents a nd

    competitions such as aerial vehical combining cutting edgecomputer and robotics technology, RCBot designed to

    maneuver underwater, intra-college competitions such as

    Mean Mechanics focusing on fundamentals of creating

    robots.

    Coding Club : The Cod ing Club a ims to b ring tog ethe r the p rog ramm ing enthusiasts a t IIT

    Ga ndhinaga r. It is intend ed to serve a s an a venue for disc ussions, co mp etition and lea rning for

    all those who love programm ing. We m ake e fforts to imp rove the p rog ram ming p rofic ienc y of a ll

    our stude nts by enc ourag ing ac tive pa rtic ipa tion in e vents and c om pe titions.

    Stud ent Run Fire Prote c tion Lab : A group of students have

    deve lop ed a Kitc hen Fire Sa fety Laborato ry a t IITGN c amp us

    in collaboration with Underwriters Laboratories (Chicago),

    which has more than 110 years of history in development fire

    safe ty standards, testing, and p rod uc t c ertific a tion.

    Fire protection engineering is a multi-disciplinary profession

    requiring expertise in seve ral trad itiona l eng ineering fields suc h

    as civil, mechanical, and chemical engineering. It deals with

    the p rob lem of unintend ed and unco ntrolled c om bustion. This

    often results in ca ta strop hic losses of life a nd p rop erty. This is one

    of the few fields where the professional makes a direct

    ob servab le impa c t on the safety of the w hole co mm unity.

    careers effectively. CDC also assists the students for effective representation of themselves,

    c onve rsa tion in groups, sha rpen the apt itud e a nd ab ility of forma l interac tion, tha t will provide

    them the found at ion fo r a lifetime o f caree r suc c ess.

    The Institute organizes seve ra l workshop s, whic h d ea ls with the persona l and professiona l grow th

    of the stud ents suc h a s Time Mana geme nt and Goa l Setting , Follow Your Drea ms etc . Besides

    this, the Institute also invites several eminent personalities in variety of fields to address the

    stud ents to p rovide glob a l picture beyond their c urric ulum, suc h a s India as a World Power:

    INTERNSHIPWe encourage our students to undertake summer internships to provide an opportunity for

    developing interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills along with technical aptitude

    and ab ility to synthe size c lassroom theory with beha vioral lea rning . The typ ica l internship p eriod
