    Thoughts for the Lenten Journey

    WehavenowenteredtheSeasonofLentwhichisthefortydayperiodleadinguptoEaster(not

    includingSundays). EastercomesonApril20th

    thisyear. SomeofyouarefamiliarwithLent,othersof

    youmaynotbedependingonthetraditionfromwhichyoucome,butLentisatimeofspiritualgrowth,atimeofsoul

    searching,atimeofintrospection lookingwithinourownhearts. LentremindsusofthetimethatJesusspentaloneinthe

    wildernesswherehefastedandprayedfor40daysandovercametemptation. ManywillgivesomethingupforLent,others

    willtake

    something

    on,

    but

    Isaid

    on

    Sunday

    morning

    that

    there

    is

    something

    else

    that

    Ithink

    should

    happen

    during

    Lent. Wewouldalladmitthatashumanbeings,weareverygoodatidentifyingwhatiswrongwithotherpeople. Weare

    goodatnamingthecharacterflawsandshortcomingsofothersandsayingwhatswrongwiththewayotherslivetheir

    lives. ButJesussaysintheSermonontheMount:Whydoyouseethespeckinyourneighborseyebutfailtorecognizethe

    loginyourowneye. Removethelogfromyourowneyeandthenyoucanseeclearlythespeckinyourneighborseye. The

    problemis,wearetypicallynotverygoodatidentifyingandowninguptotheloginourowneye. Sometimesweneedsome

    helpidentifyingornamingourownshortcomings. IthinkLentisagoodtimeforustotakealonglookinthemirror. We

    shouldnotbeatourselvesupbuthonestlyidentifyoneortwothingsthatweneedtoworkoninourownlivesbetweennow

    andEasterandthenworkonit,focusonit. Maybeitsanger;maybeitsworry;maybeitsstress;maybeitseatingtoomuch

    ordrinkingtoomuch;maybeitsourmarriage;maybeitsaneedtospendmorequalitytimewithourchildren;maybeits

    beingtoojudgmental;maybeitsbeingoverlyaddictedtotechnologyorsocialmedia;maybeitssettingasidemorequiet

    timeforprayerandreflection. EverysingleoneofushassomethingthatwecanworkonduringLentandIthinkweshould

    identifyit

    and

    then

    do

    our

    best

    to

    work

    on

    it.

    LentisalsoatimeforustofocusonChristwhoheisinourlives,whathetaught,howhelived,andhowhe

    died. OnSaturday,MeganandIwenttoseethenewmovieSonofGod,afilmbasedontheaccountofJesusslifeaccordingtheGospelofJohn. ItsagreatfilmandIwouldrecommendit. WheneverafilmcomesoutdepictingJesuslifeandminis

    try,thereisalwaysalotofdebateoverwhetherornotitisbiblical. Thetruthisnoneofusknowsexactlywhatitwaslikeat

    thetimeofJesusallwehavearethegospelnarratives(whichdiffer)andsomeotherancientdocumentsthatgiveusin

    sight. Therefore,seeingafilmlikethiswillhelpgiveusamentalpictureofwhatitmighthavebeenlikewhenJesus

    lived. Theactorinthisfilm(DiogoMorgado)doesanexcellentjobofgivingusanideaofwhatitmighthavebeenliketosee

    andhearJesus. Hewasloving,compassionate,humble,spiritual,courageous,prayerful,forgiving,andwillingtoheal. The

    formalstudyofJesusnatureandcharacterisknownasChristology,andtherearemanydifferentChristologiespresentin

    ourculture. HansKungoncesaidthatTherearesomanydifferentChriststheChristsofpietyandsecularity,ofancient

    dogmaand

    modern

    ideology,

    of

    dominant

    culture

    and

    counter

    culture,

    of

    political

    reaction

    and

    social

    revolution,

    of

    classical

    andpopularliterature,ofreligiousartandkitschandthequestion,WhichChrististheTrueChrist?becomesunavoidable

    andurgent.(Kung,OnBeingChristian). WemustallwrestlewithJesusidentityinourownlives. OneofmytheologyprofessorsfromPrinceton,DanielMigliore,providesfivehelpfulprinciplesforthistaskthatmaybeusefulthisLentenSeason:

    KnowledgeofJesusChristisnotsimplyacademicorhistoricalknowledge;itisfaithknowledge. FaithinJesusisnotjustknowingabouthimbuttrustinginhimandbeingreadytofollowhim.

    JesusChristcannotbeproperlyunderstoodinavacuum;hecanberightlyidentifiedonlywithinthecontextofGodspurposeandactivityinthehistoryofthepeopleofIsraelandthroughoutthecosmos.

    ThedoctrineofthepersonandworkofChristareinseparable. ItisinthetellingofthestoryofJesus,inthenarrationofthewholegospelhismessage,ministry,passion,andresurrectionthatweholdtogetherthepersonandwordof

    Jesus.

    EveryunderstandingandconfessionofJesusChristgrowsoutofaparticularsituationandbothreflectsandspeakstoparticularneedsandaspirations.

    ThelivingJesusChristisgreaterthanallourconfessionsandcreedsandsurpassesallofourtheologicalreflectiononhim. OurfaithisinGodrevealedinChristandnotinaparticulartheologicalsystemofChristologicalformulation.

    Pilgrimage to Lourdesby Farrell Mason,Minister of Family Life & Pastoral Care

    Einsteinoncesaid,"Therearetwowaystoliveyourlife:Oneasthough

    nothingisamiracle;theotherasthougheverythingis."

    Alittleovertenyearsago,ImademyfirstreligiouspilgrimagetotheHolyShrineof

    Lourdes.SixmillionpeoplemakethesamejourneyeveryyeartothesouthwestofFrancein

    searchofphysicalandspiritualhealing.Lourdesbecamefamouswhenin1858,theVirgin

    Mary,crownedanddressedinpurewhite,appearedtoapoorshepherdgirlnamedBerna

    detteeighteentimes.Inoneoftheholyapparitions,theVirginMarydirectedBernadetteto

    drinkandwashherselffromaspringthatspontaneouslyburstforthinsideagrotto,once

    theshelterforpigs.Sincethattime,thousandshaveexperiencedhealingfromitswaters.

    TherehavebeensomanyclaimsoftruemiraclesatLourdesthattheCatholicChurchnow

    hasaninternationalmedicalcommittee,composedoftheleadingscientists,doctors,and

    theologiansoftheworldtostudyanddocumentthethousandsofcaseseveryyear.

    IwasintroducedtoLourdesamonthaftermysonCharliewasdiagnosedwithcancer.Apackagearrivedinthemailenclosedwit

    plasticbottle,smallenoughtofitintothepalmofyourhand.ItwasemblazonedwithareligiousscreenprintoftheVirginMary,

    read,OurHolyLadyofLourdes.Thebottleappearedtobefilledwithplainoldwater.Orwasitthewaterofmiracles?WewerenaplacetoquestionhowGodheals.Alongsidethechemo,weanointedCharlie'sforehead,sometimesourown,withthismysterio

    holywater,prayedmanyanovenatoSt.Jude,ralliedthousandstoprayfromallfourcornersoftheplanet,participatedindozen

    healingservices,andmadeapilgrimagetoLourdes,allinthesearchofhealing.

    Itdoesn'ttakelongsittinginahospitalwaitingroomtolearnthepainfultruththathealingdoesnotalwaysmanifestasacure.W

    didCharliesurvivewhenthechildnexttohimdidnot?Whenyoufindyourselfatthefrighteningedgeoftotalvulnerability,whe

    asaresultofanillness,agravedisappointment,betrayal,orpainfulloss,youyearnforsomethingmore,agreatertruth,ahealin

    thattranscendsourfleshandbonereality,andtouchesthesoul.

    Idon'tremembermuchfrommyfirstvisittoLourdes.Iarrivedwornandwearyfrombattle,butGodwaswaitingthereforme.A

    nunsofLourdesgentlylaidmedowninthehealingwaters,mybraveson,snugagainstmyheart,IrealizedthatGodhadalwaysb

    therewithmeandalwayswouldbe.Atthatmoment,IdedicatedmylifeafterCharlie'scancertoimpartingthisHopeandhealing

    others.

    Overthelasttenyears,thatoriginalbottleofholywaterhasbeenfilledandfilledagain.Everysinglenight,inabeautifulritual,m

    husbandclimbsthestairs,prayersuponhistongue,andblesseseachoneofournowfivechildrenwiththeholywater.Throughm

    ministry,Ihaveusedthewatertoblessnewlife,givehopetothehopeless,andanointthesickanddying.Iamnocloserinunde

    standingthemysteriesoftheuniverse,butthewaterhastaughtmeoneimportanttruth:Weareneveralone.Godiswithus.Fo

    thatisthegreatmiracle.

    ThisSaturday,

    Iwill

    board

    the

    plane

    again

    for

    Lourdes

    with

    my

    mother,

    husband,

    and

    ALL

    five

    children

    to

    celebrate

    the

    ten

    year

    anniversaryofourfirstpilgrimage.Itpromisestobeanadventureforsure!IwillarriveamuchdifferentpersonthanIwastenye

    ago.Andyet,mysoulisjustasinneedofhealingasthefirsttime.Maybemore.IameverhopefulthatGodwillbetherewaiting

    meinthewatersagain.Mostimportantly,Iwanttomodelformychildrenthelifeofapilgrim.ThesearchforGodisthegreatadtureandthesecretoftruehealing.

    Itwouldbeanhonortotakeyourprayerswithme.Icantuckthemintotherocksofthegrotto.Icanalsolightcandlesinthecha
