Summary: Carleton and RIM are frequent collaborators in research that pushes the

boundaries and applications of mobile technology. In partnering to establish the RIM Centre,

we are creating a hub for engineering and industrial design students and researchers working

on interactive and mobile technologies.

Former President Yule Xiong and Secretary Seyed Alireza Aleali took part in the celebration of

the opening.

Summary: The 2012 edition of the Ottawa Regional Science Fair (ORSF) was held on March

23rd & 24th at Carleton University. The Ottawa Regional Science Fair is organized and run by a

volunteer organization to encourage students in the Ottawa-Carleton Region, from grades 7 to

12, to research, develop, and present projects in the fields of science and engineering. Students

from both public and private schools in the region are invited to enter projects in the fair.

Former President Yule Xiong and Vice President Kevin Graff took part in the fair as judges.

Presenters: Winnie Ye, Kevin Graff, Scott Newman and Bryce Dorin

Assistants: Alireza Aleali and Yule Xiong

Location: Mackenzie King Building 4174 and 3174

For high school students: Winnie Ye, Bryce Dorin and Yule Xiong organized the optical

experiments such as solar cells, waveguiding, and fiber optics. As shown below, the students

experienced the experiments in a hands-on fashion.

For elementary school students: Kevin Graff, Scott Newman and Bryce Dorin offered a

presentation demonstrating light polarization, liquid crystals and diffraction gratings. Smaller

versions of the experiments were given to the students for their own curiosity.

Summary: The chapter co-organized and took part in a workshop presented by Profs. Marco

Liscidini and Winnie Ye. Prof. Marco Liscsidini’s topic was “From classical to quantum nonlinear

optics in integrated photonic structures.” Prof. Winnie Ye’s title was “State of the Art Silicon

Based Components and Systems.” Students and professors learned a lot of details about

various aspects of photonics research.

Summary: SPIE Carleton Chapter co-organized a tour to Ciena labs. More than 40 students

from both Carleton University and Ottawa University took part in the tour. During the tour, the

Ciena staff introduced the company and the optical communications field in general. In addition,

Ciena showed us advanced technologies involved in optical fiber communication, and how

engineers are working to improve their communication system.

Future activities plan:

1. Participation in SPIE conferences.

2. Hosting a SPIE FOCUS conference.

3. To prepare to invite professors and experts in photonics to make lectures in Carleton

University.

4. To organize several group lectures on photonics during our meetings

5. To cooperate with other SPIE chapters around the world, and to cooperate with OSA chapter

in Ottawa.

Conclusion

During the past year, we have collected experience through organizing events and lectures. In

the future our new officers will continue these activities while looking to branch out into larger

opportunities. We hope to grow our chapter considerably.
