One of the greatest Jewish thinkers once said “There's rocks, there's trees,

there's birds, there's squirrels. Come on, we'll bless them all until we get vashnick-ard!”

Mel Brooks may have been poking fun at himself and his coreligionists, but he wasn’t

far off from the truth- We bless God as a way of saying Thank You, not just for our

own personal fortunes, but for the world around us, for everything in our lives.

Giving thanks, affirmation of the moments that bring us together in joy,

excitement and gratitude are not just events in Judaism, those moments, through the

year are ritualized in our holidays. November is the start of my favorite time of year.

Not just because the temperature cools off or that the High Holidays are behind us, but

it is the start of the season when we begin to feel thankful, regardless of our religion, as

we approach Thanksgiving and the Winter holidays, something about us changes. Then,

just days after we give thanks as Americans we will give thanks to God for the Miracle

of the Maccabees victory and the restoration of our Temple in Jerusalem. Each and

every holiday we have marks a moment when we are thankful for some aspect of our

lives, our history and our tradition: in the Spring we will give thanks for our liberation

from slavery, in the Summer for receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai and once again in

the fall we will give thanks for Gods mercy and granting us another opportunity to do

better. These moments of gratitude are so important, so holy, that we are actually

commanded to celebrate and give thanks. We are told in Deuteronomy Ve-Samachta

B’Chagecha Ve-Ha-yeetah ach sameach…You will rejoice on the Festivals and you will

be happy. That is the command, the mitzvah, that we are given for the three pilgrimage

holidays, Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot, when our ancestor would ascend to the

Temple in Jerusalem to give thanks to God. Three times a year, we are commanded to

give thanks and each time it must be with joy and happiness.

It is often asked, how can God command us to “be happy,” to give thanks is

one thing, but to command an emotion is more difficult, if it is commanded, how can it

be authentic? The answer, I believe, harkens back to the Mel Brooks quote from Robin

Hood: Men in Tights. So often we find our world so busy that we forget to stop and

look around and be amazed and awestruck by the beauty and power of Creation. The

only time our world seems to stop, when we will at a moment’s notice cancel

everything and rush to be somewhere is in times of tragedy, illness, death, funerals.

Those are moments when we are thankful for the effort of doctors, the support of

friends and family and for so many other things, but the emotion behind it is one of

sadness. The words of Mel Brooks, and the Mitzvah of the Torah- which carries a bit

more weight to them- seek to remind us that we should treat those joyous moments

with the same importance, that we should drop everything to attend a wedding, a birth,

to celebrate a holiday. Slowing our lives down, taking time to notice the birds and

rocks and squirrels, to give thanks at joyous occasions, be them sacred religious

moments or sacred national holidays, is, in the Torah’s eyes, is not just something that

we should do, it is something that we must do so that there is joy, and balance in our

lives. Psalm 92 tells us, Tov Le-Hodot La-Adonai u’li-zah-mer Le-Shimcha Elyon-

It is good to give thanks to God, to sing Your praise exhausted God, to speak of Your

love each morning and Your faithfulness each night. We give thanks to God from the

time when we wake up until the time we go to sleep, knowing that Samachta

B’Chagecha, giving thanks in joy is one of the greatest obligations, the greatest Mitzvot,

that we can fulfill. This is how we understand what it means to give thanks in Judaism,

that we show our gratitude to God and each other, with joy and happiness.

This month's book discussion was "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora

Hurston. Discussion was led by Ijo Toporek. We all agreed that it was a wonderful sto-

ry and she was certainly a forerunner of Women's Lib. Ijo led a very interesting

discussion for a timely book. For information on the November book,

please contact Lisa Isaacson at [email protected]

In October, Men’s Club held a session of Hearing Men’s Voices. We discussed how

relations between fathers and children have changed over the years.

On Saturday, November 13th, Men’s Club will sponsor Men’s Club/Veterans

Appreciation Shabbat. Men’s Club members and any veteran are invited to help

conduct the service. Signups for an honor is still underway, and as of this writing, there

are still plenty of honors available. As an added bonus, Men’s Club is sponsoring

Kiddush lunch following the service. More details are on this page.

On Friday, December 3rd, Men’s Club will prepare a baked potato bar dinner for

Chanukah, following the shabbat evening service. We will need volunteers to prepare

and serve.

Men’s Club wishes everyone a happy Thanksgiving, and a special thanks to all our

veterans on Veterans Day.

ACTS THAT GO ABOVE

BEHAVIOR ARE CALLED ACTS OF

CHESED.

Tradition teaches that chesed is one of the three pillars that is said to hold up the world, and that

the Torah- our foundational text -begins and ends with acts of chesed.

The Prophets of Ancient Israel with Dr. Michael Kogan,

Mondays at 7:30PM Join Dr. Kogan as he leads this on-going class in a study of the

prophets. with a deep dive into the

prophet Ezekiel. Texts are examined from a scholarly point of view, asking when, where and why these immortal texts were written, and engaging in a close reading of the contents. With both Jewish and Christian students enrolled, interpretations of these

shared texts are presented from both faiths, encouraging students to come to their own conclusions as to their

ultimate meaning.

Danish and Drash: with Rabbi Ravski Wednesdays at 1:00PM

Come and study some of the highlights of this week's parsha and the commentary. Rabbi Ravski will

bring the Torah, you bring the Danish!

Talmud: with Rabbi Ravski Thursdays at 7:00PM

The Babylonian Talmud is the foundation on which the

understanding and interpretation of our Religious Laws, Rituals, Customs

and Traditions are based. It has its own terminology, logic and structure. Join Rabbi Ravski in exploring all that

the Talmud has to teach us in this weekly Talmud Class.

We will be studying the 10th chapter of Tractate Pesachim, one of the

most well-known chapters in the entire Talmud. It defines what a Passover Seder looks like, the order, the four questions, how much wine to

drink and so much more!
