MEET OLIVIA BIERNACKITemple Israel Religious School student, Bat Mitzvah, and Youth Group member
OLIVIA’S LEGACY: A PLACE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION
“Through Religious School and Youth Group, I’ve learned so much about my background and how to appreciate it. Having that Jewish education is important to me because it gave me the strength and confidence I needed to share my thoughts about religious and political issues at my Bat Mitzvah. And, I love Temple Israel because they always connect me to Jewish culture through food. When I heard about the Reimagining project to renew the school, I knew that the project would last and benefit generations after me, so I contributed my Bat Mitzvah money. I’m excited to see it further Jewish education for others. My favorite thing about Judaism is the idea of Tikkun Olam—repairing and renewing the world. We are repairing and renewing Temple Israel’s education center with an upgraded school that will provide a better opportunity for us to learn in and I’m excited to see it in action. Others should join me and donate to better that renewal.”

MAY SENIOR LUNCH Everybody Eats: The St. Louis Jewish Food & Foodways ProjectPresented by Diane Everman, PhD, Archivist, St. Louis Jewish Community Archives The St. Louis Jewish Food & Foodways Project is in the process of gathering information about those who owned, operated, or even visited various Jewish-owned food-related businesses. From the early 19th century through the late 20th century, there were hundreds of Jewish businesses that revolved around food, including delis, bakeries, butchers, fruit & produce vendors, grocery stores, poultry and egg men, confectioners, fish markets and supermarkets. This presentation will offer a glimpse into our findings to date.Monday, May 13 from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm at Shaare Emeth$10 per personLunch: Lunch prior to the program will be catered by Protzel’s deli and will include your choice of sandwich: corned beef, turkey, or egg salad; your choice of side: cole slaw or potato salad; and either a New York knish or potato knish. Dessert will be an upside-down cupcake. Please let us know if you need gluten free.RSVP: By Monday, May 6 by mailing in the form that will come to your mailbox or by calling Shaare Emeth at 314-569-0010.Please park on the South Side of the building. Free Valet service is available. Please let us know if you need a cab when you RSVP.
This program is made possible through a grant from the Nathan Kahn-Ernestine Kahn-Charles Kahn Foundation of Congregation Temple Israel and the Women’s Auxiliary Foundation for the Jewish Aged.
