Scholar-in-Residence Weekend with Rabbi Kenneth KanterDiscovering the Jewish Contributions to the Music We Love Friday, April 13 through Sunday, April 15

Enjoy a fun weekend with Rabbi Kenneth Kanter, an expert on the Jewish influence on American popular music from the 1840s through Tin Pan Alley to today’s Broadway. Think of artists such as Leonard Bernstein and Oscar Hammerstein II, Irving Berlin and the Gershwins. Think of songs such as “Oh What A Beautiful Morning,” “Lady Is a Tramp,” and even “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” The Jewish contribution to our music is strong and spirited, and Rabbi Kanter, associate dean at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, will explore it with us.

Weekend highlights include: • Friday evening Kabbalat Shabbat Tin Pan Alley Sing-Along• Shabbat morning study of Biblical Music: From Trope to Debbie Friedman• Saturday night Broadway Cabaret showcasing musicals from the 1940s to current day

Come Eat, Learn and Sing! Individual event pricing is $36 per person. Donor opportunities start at $118 per person and include all events and intimate Donor Reception with Rabbi Kanter. All events are open to the community. For more information, contact Jack Weinberg and Carl Viniar at [email protected] or visit mkorshalom.org.

…And the Walls Came Tumbling DownSix Wednesdays, 10:30 amFebruary 21 & 28 and March 7, 14, 21 & 28 Led by Yossi Afek

For nearly 1500 years, Judaism built around itself an impregnable spiritual wall in the form of Halacha. Then the Jewish community in Spain was destroyed and the walls came tumbling down. Challenges to traditional Judaism came from every quarter: Mysticism and Kabbalah, Sabbatianism and Chasidism, Spinoza’s Pantheism and Jewish Haskalah, the Jewish Reform Movement and finally even Zionism all trace their roots to the earthquake of the Sephardic catastrophe. Really? Yossi Akef leads the debate!

You are welcome to attend any or all of these sessions; No RSVP necessary. For more information, contact Gail Donner and Art Treiman at [email protected].
