TORAH TIDBITS In this week's parsha we're told the name of the individuals tasked with building the vessels for the mishkan: Betzalel and Oholiav. But there's something curious about the way G-d calls Betzalel: not only is his name and his father's name and shevet given, but also the name of his grandfather, Hur. . We've already seen the name Hur twice before. The first time was during the fight with Amalek. During that battle, whenever Moshe raised his arms up, Bnei Yisrael would be winning the battle, and whenever he lowered his arms, we'd start to lose, so Moshe got assistance from Aaron and Hur to hold his arms up (Shemot 17:11-12). Chazal teach us that this was because when Moshe raised his arms and caused the Jewish people to look heavenward, it focused our emunah in G-d and that's why we would prevail. Next, before Moshe ascends to Har Sinai, he leaves Aaron and Hur in charge (Shemot 24:14). . But later, after the Cheit Haegel, we only see Aaron mentioned, and don't hear from Hur again. The Gemarah provides an explanation for this: Hur was murdered when he stood up to the those who wanted to build a golden calf (and that's why Aaron tried to stall them rather than say no outright, as Hur did). . The purpose of the mishkan was to be a place for Hashem, so that he could dwell among the people. It was also a place for Bnei Yisrael to focus their emunah, despite being at the mercy of the elements in the desert. We are also taught by Chazal that the mishkan was built as a form of atonement for the sin of the golden calf. So here we've come full circle: Hur -- whose role was to focus the faith of the Jewish people in G-d, stood up for what was right even though he was outnumbered and ultimately killed for it. His grandson now merits to follow in his footsteps and build the mishkan, which atones for that very sin and also serves to focus the Jewish people's emunah in Hashem. . But the connections don't end there. Chazal actually teach us that Hur was the son of none other than Calev ben Yefunneh, one of the two spies (along with Yehoshua bin Nun) who stood up to his ten peers and asserted that despite their dire forecasts, we should still go to conquer the land of Israel. It seems that despite seeing his son killed for taking a similarly unpopular stand, Calev didn't hesitate in doing so himself. The Torah says that he was filled with a special רוח(Bamidbar 14:24). Here we see the same word used to describe Betzalel: אלקים... רוח אותו וימלא (Shemot 35:31). . We can learn from Calev, Hur, and Betzalel to stand up for what's right and for faith in Hashem, even when it is unpopular. Sometimes you'll simply be outnumbered despite your best efforts, or you'll even face personal repercussions from it. But even if we don't see the reward immediately (as Hur didn't get to see his grandson merit to build the vessels of the mishkan) , we have to do the right thing regardless. . Written by anonymous.
