If you’ve ever sat and watched children on a playground, you’ve seen the utter lack of self-con-sciousness, the joy of running, swinging and jumping. It’s a beautiful example of losing one-self in the moment. As Melanie Smithson points out in her article on page 11, some of the world’s greatest minds found their inspi-ration during play. The staff at Golden Solar (see p18) play in the Lakewood softball league. When

we are feeling the stress and tightness of deadlines, we hit the trail on foot or mountain bike. One recent stress-fi lled day, we decided to dance everywhere we went in the offi ce and at home. Not only does it feel silly and good, it is quite a kick for those still sitting to watch someone shake and shimmy around the room. Laughter really is great medicine. We created a list of fun stuff we love to do; you might try this with your family! Ride the Alpine slide, tube on Clear Creek, pan for gold, art festivals, farmers markets, movies, camp out, 4-wheeling. We are blessed with so much to see and do in Colorado and we never want to cease to be tourists in our adopted state. After watching some tabloid news about the breakup of Kristen Stewart (KStew) and Robert Pattison (RPatz), we took to calling each other by TChris and DZerb for the day. Why should JLo have all the fun with a catchy nickname? We working on a combo name like “Brangelina” next. “Zerbwell” does have a nice ring to it. 3M is a company that innovates existing products (everything from tape and computer screens to food safety and fi rst aid). They require their employees to take an hour (besides lunch) during the day to do whatever they want…work on a personal project, play ping-pong, whatever. They believe a little creative play helps them be more pro-ductive and innovative.

So, why can’t you play cards in the jungle?...Too many cheetahs! - TChris

What is a kitty cat’s favorite color?...Purrrrrrple! - DZerb

That’s the only G-rated joke that Doug knows. Share yours with all of our readers on our Facebook page-MileHighNaturalAwakenings.

There are currently 25.8 million Americans with Diabetes. This number does not even include the number of people that have not been diagnosed with Diabetes but do have the disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of diabetics in every age group has increased every year since 1980. It is predicted that the number is going to continue to rise steadily in America as well as the numbers for Metabolic Syndrome.

Metabolic Syndrome is known as Pre-Diabetes and is a precursor to the life-threatening diagnosis of Diabetes. Overprocessed foods, produced to lengthen the shelf life, have a downside: our bodies were not meant to metabolize those newfangled foods, leading to the rise in metabolic diseases. At Clear Sky Medical we can now detect the early stages of Pre-diabetes. When a person is diagnosed with Diabetes, 60% of their pancreatic beta-cells (which produce insulin) have been destroyed. This makes it very difficult to reverse Diabetes and to prevent a person from ever needing insulin injections. New testing can show “your window into diabetes” before the disease manifests and while there is still a chance to reverse the trend. Our free September 27th seminar will discuss the testing methods that show if you are at risk and what you can do to reverse the risk for developing metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Remember, your health is in your hands! Our goal is to give you the education to help you achieve a long and healthy future without disease.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRE-DIABETES AND DIABETES? AND DO YOU HAVE IT?

EXHALE YOUR HEADBy CM Brown

Imagine your head as a beanbag fi lled with millions of tiny little beans called

thoughts. These beans come in many shapes and sizes; fear, anger, hope, jealousy, resentment, happiness, doubt, desire and the personal identity of ‘me’ or Ego. All of these thoughts and ego forms have something in common - condition-ing. Conditioning is the idea that things should be a certain way; “I should do this.” “I would do this if only I could, and I should.” The ego always wants to get this or that thing - to establish its worth. I overheard two people talking recently. One said to the other, in a very matter of fact way, “Well, everyone wants to win.” The other agreed. But, what is winning? It is confi rmation of the ego’s idea about itself as being worthy. If I “win,” the ego feels good. If I “lose,” the ego feels lousy. The ego is subject to the indiscriminate whims of external events or the fl uctua-tions of thought. This can be an endless drama of dissatisfaction. The result of dissatisfaction drama is an endless search for satisfaction. But, is satisfac-tion to be found in thoughts or in the attempt to build up the power of the ego? This is the question at the heart of Self Inquiry. This Self does not exist in the head, in the thoughts, nor in the ego. We do have a tremendous power of breath, of life. Therefore, the only sensible thing to do is to exhale your head. Right now! Breathe in a long, leisurely breath and then exhale your head. This exhalation is an affi rmation that you are much more than the head and all it contains. Self Inquiry begins with this exhalation. Stop struggling and searching for satis-faction, see what is really Here! Beyond conditioned behavior, YOU are alive in the complete stillness of peace. It is neither satisfaction nor dissatisfaction; it is the calm that lives beyond all struggle. The great Zen teacher, D.T. Suzuki said, “After awakening, everything is the same as it was before, but you are walking two feet off the ground.” C.M. Brown is a Spiritual Counselor in the Vedantic and Buddhist traditions, an Integral Yoga and Meditation instructor, Satsang leader and author of “Let Go and Live: Yoga, Meditation, and Being Alive” (Amazon and Abebooks.com). DRAWN TO INTUITIVE ARTBy Dan Liss

Tarot cards can be a versatile way to enjoy art in your life. Primarily they are used to refl ect on important life issues, but are also used almost like a coffee-table art book or

a miniature art gallery. In the hands of a reader, they tell stories that are created from the visible media of the printed pictures combined with the reader’s intuitive or psychic skills. Although several companies publish Tarot decks, the Internet also enables many artists to self-publish and market their own cards. The art used in tarot is a highly cre-ative niche, melding metaphysics into the subject matter and working in a small format. Styles include classical drawing and painting to photography and computer generated art. Most artists create their images in a large format, then photograph the images and

reduce them to card size. They are sometimes produced in numbered and signed limited editions, or include extras like CD ROMs, posters or extra cards. Most people consider tarot as a form of fortune-telling, but they are often used for fortune creating, and the images can open our minds to receive shifts in perception and new ideas. Pull one card a day, meditate on it and journal about it. Select cards from a deck that represent your goals or desires and display them where you can visually affi rm your intentions daily. Ask a question, lay out a few cards and see what wisdom may come. In one recent tarot, the classic image of the Chariot was changed to an Archer. Both focus their energy to achieve their goals. Another designer changed the Devil to Temptation, which conveys the same idea without the ‘spookier’ image. Both speak to free will, power of choice and potential consequences. Early decks portrayed the Magician as a stage magician, later decks changed him to a ceremonial magician or shaman. How do you make magic in your life? The art of tarot is cer-tainly one way that anyone can try. Dan Liss more than 40 years experience reading cards. He is also a collector and dealer of tarot decks. Magicalawakenings.com. PLAY MORE, EARN MOREBy Melanie Smithson

Hard work, sacrifi ce and more hard work are the keys to accom-plishing our goals and enjoying fi nancial success. Or are they?!

What if you were told: to accomplish more, play more? Play is often dismissed as frivolous, but it may be a key element to success. Many great minds, like Einstein, Franklin and Freud are recognized for being great players. I defi ne play as an open and unat-tached way of interacting with self, others or objects; spontaneous being. But play is a personal experience; each person has their own interpretation and their own internal response when invited to play. We have preferred ways of playing and favorite playmates. But all too often we are plagued with messages that it is wrong or even irresponsible to play. D.W. Winnicott, a leading play therapist, says “It is in playing, and only in playing, that the individual child or adult is able to be creative and to use the whole personality, and it is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self.” Research shows that play increases serotonin and endorphins (chemicals associated with pleasure, reward and stress reduc-tion). Inviting play into our adult lives changes our perspective and increases our fl exibility, spontaneity and creativity. Play can open the doorway to abundance. Brian Sutton Smith, Ph.D., professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania says, “The opposite of play is not work. It’s depression.” All work and no play diminishes the joy life holds and can negatively impact our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Instead, make play a priority. Set aside fi ve minutes daily to paint, walk, skip or dance; sing on your way to work; doodle on the note to the doctor; or make funny noises when no one is listening. Play brings you into a joyous space that is cre-ative and expansive. You will see new ideas and possibilities showing up everywhere. Melanie Smithson, MS in Somatic Psychotherapy, certifi ed in Dance Movement Therapy, Sedona Method Coaching, EMDR, Hypnotherapy and Play Therapy is co-owner of Smithson Clinic, Inc., in Denver. She authored “Reclaiming An Adult Relationship to Play” and works with clients to access their innate wisdom and joyful presence. 303-271-7659 or [email protected]. See ad page 7.

WATCHING MAGIC BOOSTS CREATIVITY IN CHILDREN

Researchers from Lancaster University have discovered that youngsters watching creative fantasy fi lms improve their

own imagination and creativity. The study involved 52 4-to-6-year-old children. The youngsters were split into two groups and shown two short segments of a popular fantasy movie. The fi ndings showed that the group watching the magical scenes generally scored “signifi cantly better” in creative activities than their peers in the other group that saw scenes without any magical content.

Can Parents Teach Peace?A recent study suggests they can. Researchers from Virginia

Commonwealth University, in Richmond, and the University of Illinois system studied more than 5,500 students at 37 middle schools, focusing on this age group because aggressive behavior tends to escalate during the transition from childhood to adolescence. The researchers found that violent behavior in general increased throughout the three years of middle school, especially among girls.

The good news is that children whose parents actively advocate peaceful confl ict resolution acted less aggressively, even if they at-tended more violent schools.

healthbriefs

20-Second Trust FactorFirst impressions not only count—they are surprisingly

accurate, at least when it comes to detecting whether a stranger is “made” to be compassionate, trustworthy or kind. New research by the University of California, Berkeley suggests that it can take just 20 seconds to recognize who is genetically so inclined. Two dozen couples participated in the study and provided DNA samples. Researchers documented them as they talked about times when they had suffered. A separate group of observers that did not know the couples were shown 20-second video segments of only

the listeners and asked to rate which participants seemed most compassionate, based on facial expressions and body language. The listeners that received the highest ratings for empathy turned out to possess a particular variation of the oxytocin receptor gene known as the GG genotype. Dubbed the “love hormone”, oxytocin is naturally secreted into the bloodstream and the brain, where it promotes social interaction, bonding and romantic love. “People can’t see genes, so there has to be something going on that is signaling these genetic differences to the strangers,” says Aleksandr Kogan, lead author of the study. “What we found is that the people that had two copies of the G version displayed more trustworthy behaviors: more head nods, eye contact, smiling and open body posture. These behaviors signaled kindness to the strangers.”

Noodle Doodle l Creativity on TapCreativity is often perceived as an unpredictable event, the product of an unexpected “Aha!” moment. But a pair of Michigan psychologists, Mareike Wieth, of Albion College, and Rose Zacks, of Michigan State University, decided to research the concept. They discovered that problems requiring a fl ash of illumination to solve are best ap-proached during the time of day when thinkers are not actually at what they feel is their peak. Reporting their fi ndings in the journal Thinking and Reasoning, they assigned 428 students to fi ll out a ques-tionnaire with 19 questions, including, “What time would you get up if you were entirely free to plan your day?” and “How much do you depend upon an alarm clock?” Participants were categorized as morning, evening or neutral types and randomly assigned to a morning or afternoon testing session. Some problems were analytic in nature, others were inspiration-based. While the more logical type of problem solving showed no statistical difference, morning people scored higher on the insight-demanding challenges in the late afternoon, and vice versa. Wieth and Zacks believe the results depend upon an inhibitory process that suppresses distracting information. It is thought that this system performs less effi ciently when individuals are less alert, allowing random thoughts to enter the decision-making process, resulting in more creative thinking.

Standing in a newly carpeted room, it’s hard to miss the distinctive chemical odors wafting up from the fl oor. That’s the off-gassing of volatile organic compounds

(VOCs)—airborne chemicals that can exacerbate asthma symptoms and cause headaches, nausea and eye and throat irritation upon exposure. While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) maintains that proper ventilation signifi cantly reduces VOC exposure from new carpets after the fi rst 48 to 72 hours, health concerns related to conventional carpets are legiti-mate, as are its other environmental consequences. Accord-ing to the EPA, “Over 4 billion pounds of carpet enter the solid waste stream in the United States every year.” Because it’s bulky and comprises multiple materials, discarded car-pet is diffi cult both to dispose of and recycle. Fortunately, there are a host of savvy alternatives that won’t tax the health of our families or the planet. Here are some of the most popular eco-fl ooring choices. Hardwood: Woods certifi ed by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and available through most major retailers offer an attractive option for most homes. Domestically grown species, including oak, maple and hickory, are the better choices environmentally. However, the FSC also certi-fi es tropical and other forests around the globe (at least 330 million acres in 81 countries), helping to prevent damaging deforestation and counteract illegal logging (fsc.org).

Brad Kahn, the council’s director of communications, notes that people purchasing FSC-certifi ed products have assurance that the product is supporting responsible forest management and helping protect forests for future generations. Reclaimed Hardwood: Lumber brimming with character, as well as sterling environmental credentials is available from companies specializing in reclaimed wood. It may come from sources as diverse as Midwest barns razed for devel-opment to ties from abandoned rail lines in Thailand. Nail holes, scratches, weathering and other distinctive markings lend the wood—and our homes—a special distinction. Re-claiming these valuable materials not only diverts them from the waste stream, it expands the eco-options available to homeowners via otherwise unavailable old-growth tropical hardwoods, including cherry and teak. If a local source isn’t available, look for an FSC-certifi ed company (e.g., TerraMai.com; ElmwoodReclaimedTimber.com). Bamboo: Bamboo has won many environmental accolades in recent years because it is a hardy plant that grows to full height quickly. Intended to reduce the need to fell trees, its use has prompted the spread of bamboo plantations across India, China and Burma; the unintended result has been rampant clearing of old-growth, biodiverse forests for a monoculture crop, frequently for bamboo products that are not FSC-certifi ed. Look for bamboo that is FSC-certifi ed; when it’s not, advises Kahn, “Consumers have no way to know how the bamboo was grown or harvested.” What’s more, he adds, bamboo fl ooring is held together with adhesives and other chemicals, and these related issues must be considered by an eco-conscious homeowner. Cork: Cork is durable, warm, sound absorbing and envi-ronmentally friendly. Lending unique properties to fl ooring, its cellular nature makes it a good shock absorber (a special plus for the infi rm) and maintains its integrity over time. Note that spilled moisture needs to be dealt with immediately, as it could eventually ruin the fl ooring. Derived from the bark of the Quercus suber, or cork oak, that grows in the Mediterranean region, the bark is harvested once every nine years by hand from carefully managed forests. Peeling off the bark does not hurt the trees. To be sure cork fl ooring is chemical-free, look for companies selling all-natural, undyed cork. Wool Carpets: Wool has everything—softness, warmth, durability, variety and sustainability. Shorn from sheep, the pri-mary fi ber is as renewable as possible, but homeowners need to check the composition of the backing material, as well. Nature’s Carpet (NaturesCarpet.com), one example of a green textile company, ranks their wool carpets on a grading system. The most environmentally friendly, or “dark green”, carpets feature jute (the same material used for burlap, com-prising one of the softest natural carpets) natural fi ber back-ings, held in place with natural rubber latex, says Brooke Davis, a spokesperson for Nature’s Carpet. “The result is an ultra-low toxicity fl oor covering,” she says. Davis confi rms that most wool carpets will last 30 years or longer and at the end of their long natural life, will biodegrade. Natural Carpets: In addition to jute, other plant-based carpets are ideal for hallways, entranceways and other high-

Three years ago, Janine Joslin, a savvy business executive, set her sights on

becoming a Dazzler, and today is a proud member of the Leawood, Kansas, chapter of community tap-dancing troupes. “I love to dance and perform, and I felt that had been missing from my own life,” she says. After a friend suggested it, Joslin showed up for her fi rst practice ready to go, wear-ing tights and tap shoes. Potential Dazzlers must prove they’ve learned the routines before being selected to perform for the public. Luckily, says Joslin, “I’m a quick study,” and soon took her place in this 50-and-up women’s group that likes to routinely Shuffl e Off to Buffalo at area retirement facilities, church halls and special events. Performing for apprecia-tive groups is a great feeling, she notes, and helps make the twice-weekly practices worthwhile. Just be-ing around inspiring women has helped Joslin look at aging differently. She’s now applying her business skills to set up her troupe’s

fi rst website. Joslin’s experi-ence proves what

many dancers, art-ists, writers, actors

and musicians know: Active, hands-on,

group participa-tion in the arts is

benefi cial on many levels.

National Trend

In a recent study commissioned by the Wallace Foundation, Gifts of the Muse: Reframing the Debate About the Benefi ts of the Arts, the researchers found that, “People that engage in arts in a group set-

ting develop a sense of community as

they exchange favors (such as meeting to learn lines or loaning painting sup-plies); identify themselves with a cast, music ensemble or choral group; and develop a sense of trust and expecta-

tions of reciprocity.” It also noted, “Through the arts of ethnic traditions—such as classical Indian dance, Jamaican steel drums or Japanese raku ceramics—participants develop and maintain their cultural heritage and communicate their cul-tural identity to outsiders.”

Gateway ExperiencesMost art disciplines can be experi-enced at any age. No previous training or ability is required, just a curious spirit and willingness to participate and learn. Fun options range from a painting party, in which participants set up an easel and paint a canvas at Uncork’d Art, in Washington, D.C. (UncorkdArt.com), to African drum-ming at DrumRise, in Decatur, Georgia (DrumRise.net). “A drumming class is a great way to reduce stress, have fun, relax and reenergize, all at the same time; it has even been shown to posi-tively affect your immune system,” say co-founders Amy Jackson and Colleen Caffrey. Such activities allow us to dabble and explore amidst the power of a group and maximize the joy of artful endeavors, which many prefer to the cost of individual lessons. One of the most accessible commu-nity arts is choral music, as it requires no special equipment. Singing in a group can also become a community tradition that gathers people of all ages and lifestyles in fellowship and cel-ebration. Since 1882, singing Handel’s Messiah has become an annual high-light for a Swedish wheat-farming community in South-Central Kansas. For three months before Palm Sunday, 200 farmers, homemakers, college students and business owners from the Lindsborg area gather twice weekly to rehearse the three-hour piece (Bethanylb.edu/Oratorio_History.html). Chicagoans maintain a similar holiday tradition. For 35 years, free Do-It-Yourself Messiah concerts have provided a community-funded uplift (imfChicago.org). Thousands of audi-ence members lend their voices to thrilling performances of this master-piece, led by a world-class conductor

and soloists and backed by an all-vol-unteer orchestra of local professionals and amateur musicians. Storytelling is yet another com-munity performing art that requires no special equipment. The National Storytelling Network (StoryNet.org) advances the art of storytelling through a national conference and local story-telling guilds. The Lehigh Valley Story-telling Guild, in Pennsylvania, meets once a month at a local coffee house (LVStorytellers.org). Members include professional and amateur storytell-ers, poets, actors and newcomers that love to practice—or just listen to—this ancient art. Strong community and cultural identity is forged on other stages, as well. The Community Actors Theatre, in San Diego, California’s, Oak Park,

performs many plays written by local

playwrights exploring

themes in black cul-ture (Com-munityAc-torsThe-

atre.com). For

Calvin Manson, a local poet and

playwright who teaches acting work-shops, the nonprofi t venue feels like a mom-and-pop outfi t. “They have the raw talent that could be developed into something wonderful. People don’t just learn to be actors and play-wrights. They learn to work together, to commit to a common struggle. When they leave, they know how to work with people, to be team players.” Sometimes, a life change can open the door to a creative outlet. As a newly single 30-something, photog-rapher Doug Plummer says that when he fell in with the Seattle contra dance scene in the mid-1980s, “It became my primary social life.” Derived from New England folk dance, two lines of dancers face each other and move to the rhythms of fi ddle music. “Since 2003, anytime I’m in New England, I try to stay over on a Monday and catch the Nelson [New Hamp-shire] dance,” says Plummer. Likening

it to participating in the slow-food and similar local movements, he says, “I feel like I’m entering into a mode of slow-dancing.” At the weekly Nelson gatherings, “The dancers will drift in; singles, couples and families with kids,” he relates. “Someone puts out the fi ddle case for the $2 admission. Whoever volunteered to bring baked goods sets them out. Harvey shows up with his fi ddle, sits on the fold-up chair on the stage. Bob sits at the piano. ‘Line up for a contra,’ barks Don, in a clipped, Yankee accent. ‘First dance is Mony-musk.’ Then everyone just joins in.”

Auditioning for the Role of a LifetimeThe next level of volunteer arts partici-pation may involve an audition and a greater commitment. At the same time, these pursuits offer prime opportuni-ties to expand artistic skills and join in something bigger than one’s self. Since 1873, the Cincinnati, Ohio, May Festival has served as a shining example of community showmanship (MayFestival.com). Chorus auditions are held in January, rehearsals begin in September and concerts routinely sell out by May. Music critic Nancy Malitz com-ments, “It’s that special, tiny sliver of the year when everybody stretches. When hundreds of amateur singers accelerate the tempo by devoting every night to rehearsal and every day to thoughts of the concerts to come… when audiences look their fi nest, clap their loudest.” Lawrence Coleman, a chorus mem-ber for 15 years, has found that singing and networking with other May Festi-val vocalists has paid off in surprising ways. “I’ve recorded and had other singing engagements and opportuni-ties, all because I’ve been connected to the chorus and the people in it,” he says. Coleman also sings with the rhythm and blues gospel group Fo Mo Brothers, performing at area churches and the Midwest Regional Black Fam-ily Reunion. Coleman remarks, “I have friends in the chorus from very different walks of

life. We come together for the single purpose of making great music. People of differing backgrounds and schools of thought can do more than coexist. It’s confi rmed for me that we can learn to celebrate our differences when we have a common goal.” Plein air painters forsake the indoors to take their paints, easels and can-vases outside. Plein-Air Painters of America regularly paint in groups in the fresh air and then hold an exhibition; annual workshops help teach techniques (p-a-p-a.com). At the recent seventh annual Florida’s Forgotten Coast event, in the state’s Panhandle, billed as America’s Great Plein Air Paint-Out, featured artists set up alongside amateurs eager to learn more (PleinAirfl .com). Whatever one’s newly discovered or longtime treasure, individuals engag-ing in a group arts activity forge strong social bonds, keep ethnic arts traditions alive, learn new things in new ways and experience joyous personal growth. … All while creating something wonderful.

When you pull up to the historic

building that is home to Golden Solar at 614 10th Street in Golden, the fi rst thing you notice is it’s in-congruous placement in the stark, indus-trial parking lot of the Coors-Tek facility. “The house was originally built in 1872 and later on, when Coors was building this facility, the owner refused to sell,” says Don Parker, owner of Golden Solar, “but Coors has been a great neighbor for us and for the City of Golden.” Of course, you can’t help but notice the solar panels on the roof. Entering the quaint offi ce, there is a bustle of activ-ity. Workers are coming and going, the phone is constantly ringing and a new hire is being brought up to speed. That new hire launched out of his seat to greet me as I entered the offi ce, clearly excited about his new opportunity. Ac-cording to Parker, “We work with Jefferson County to put unemployed folks back to work through their programs. We get good employees, the County puts folks back to work and obviously the new employees appreciate the opportu-nity,” says Parker. Don Parker bought the business in January 2011. “My wife Mary and I had our solar system installed by Golden Solar and were very happy with the quality of the crafts-manship. When the company came up for sale, we jumped on the opportunity to run a business that would provide

jobs and have a positive impact on our community and our environment,” he says. Parker is well-suited to run Golden Solar; his background includes a stint with the EPA and as an environmental consultant. Eric Krohn, Solar Coordinator, described what the cus-tomer can expect when they call to explore solar energy possibilities. “We do a home visit to assess your needs and wants. We review your energy bill, discuss tax incentives, electric company rebates, technical aspects, leasing vs. owning pros and cons and fi nancing possibilities. Our goal is to help you move toward energy self-suffi ciency.” Since Krohn comes from the mortgage industry, he knows how to talk numbers in layman’s terms very well. “We want our customers happy with us for a long time and there are a lot of options when choosing a solar com-pany. What sets us apart is our level of craftsmanship. We expect our system to be running smoothly after 50 years. An integral part of our team is our Master Electrician, Shawn Josserand, who started the business in 2006…even the wir-ing we use is usually better than necessary,” says Parker. Golden Solar specializes in residential and small com-mercial applications. “We like to work with non-profi ts like churches. There are ways for them to take advantage of the 30% federal tax credit event thought they don’t pay federal income taxes,” says Parker. Krohn explains that everyone who gets an electric bill is already paying for solar energy. It’s called the Renewable Energy Standard Adjustment and it can be found on every bill. “The law allows the utilities to collect this fee and use it to fund energy rebates. The law also requires the utility to buy back the excess electricity generated by your solar system. It’s not unreasonably to expect a 7-10% return on your solar investment.” Overall, the team at Golden Solar is knowledgeable, car-ing, committed to quality and dedicated to the community. “Don used to be on the Jefferson County Open Space Ad-visory Committee and even ran for City Council in Golden once,” Krohn said.

Functional MedicineTaking the Whole

Toolbox Approach

by Kathleen Barnes

“Conventional medicine is like a carpenter that only has a hammer to work with, while

functional medicine doctors are work-ing with a full toolkit,” says the author of From Fatigued to Fantastic, National Medical Director of Fibromyalgia & Fatigue Centers, Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, of Kona, Hawaii. Conventional medicine addresses symptoms instead of diseases, explains Los Angeles functional medicine practi-tioner Dr. Hyla Cass, author of 8 Weeks to Vibrant Health: A Take Charge Plan for Women. “It tends to treat the symp-toms with more and more medications that cause a host of other side effects that also need to be treated and can result in declining health, rather than increased vitality.” “Functional medicine, rather than sim-ply ‘chasing symptoms’ while ignoring the causes, searches for and addresses envi-ronmental factors, nutritional defi ciencies, genetic tendencies, biochemical dysfunc-tions and emotional and social stressors that can together cause the development of symptoms,” adds Dr. Adiel Tel-Oren. He operates Eco-Health Clinics internationally (the U.S. site is in Minneapolis, Minne-

sota) and serves as president emeritus and professor of nutrition and functional medi-cine with the California-based University of Natural Medicine. In every case, it takes some in-vestigation to get to the heart of the problems, and the solutions can take many forms. “For example, depression, insomnia and obesity aren’t diseases; they are symptoms,” says Cass. “If we can fi nd the underlying cause of these symptoms, we can address the problem permanently.” An allopathic approach, on the other hand, would routinely recommend a pill to lower temperature for high fever, pre-scribe a synthetic pill to elevate mood in treating depression, or look to pharma-cological anti-infl ammatory drugs for simple immune reactions. Tel-Oren is among those that link a vast number of illnesses to stress: “Di-verse conditions such as fi bromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, heart disease, diabetes, mood and cognitive disorders, various autoimmune disorders, premen-strual syndrome, temporomandibular joint issues, chronic pelvic pain, inter-stitial cystitis, chronic low back pain, chemical and food sensitivities, allergies,

asthma and cancer all seem to share common courses of formation. The com-mon denominator for these disturbances appears to be chronic stress.” Dr. Mark Hyman, chair of the Insti-tute for Functional Medicine, in Lenox, Massachusetts, elaborates: “Functional medicine seeks to create balance in the body by looking at seven keys to achieving wellness: nutrition, hormones, infl ammation, digestion, detoxifi cation, energy metabolism and a calm mind. We work through the entire system, help people identify patterns and return the body to balance.” Hyman is a strong advocate of nutri-tion as the basis for restoring balance to the body. “Food is the most powerful medicine we have, more powerful than any drug, more powerful than anything you’ll ever fi nd in a pill bottle,” he says. Teitelbaum notes, “Conventional medicine is basically run on econom-ics, so doctors are too often infl uenced by drug company marketing messages masquerading as science that encourage expensive treatments, regardless of their toxicity.” In stark contrast, “Functional medicine instead looks for the lowest cost treatment that is supported by medi-cal evidence.”

Conventional Medicine Case in PointFibromyalgia, for example, encompasses a basket of symptoms, usually begin-ning with overall body pain with specifi c pain points. Other common symptoms can include extreme fatigue, facial pain, irritable bowel syndrome, memory loss and brain fog, depression, numbness and tingling, palpitations, insomnia and headaches, including migraines. “Until a few years ago, conventional medicine decided you were crazy if you complained of these symptoms,” advises Teitelbaum. “Then some expensive medi-cations came out—promoted by $210 million a year in advertising; so now, patients are instead being told to take medications with lots of side effects.” The most common conventionally prescribed drugs for fi bromyalgia target symptoms of insomnia, depression, nerve pain and infl ammation. Accord-ing to Teitelbaum, the vast majority of people treating with these medications continue to experience the same symp-

healingways

Once called “alternative” medicine, then “holistic” or “comple-mentary” and later “integrative”, the newest evolution is “functional” medicine, designed to search out the underly-ing causes of illnesses in order to carry out effective treatment.

toms over a fi ve-year period; only 25 to 35 percent report some improvement. It’s diffi cult to determine how many Americans suffer from fi bromyalgia because many go undiagnosed (the average time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis is fi ve years). Cure4Fibro-myalgia.com estimates that 5 million Americans, or approxi-mately 2 percent of the population, suffer from this disease.

Functional Medicine Alternative“Functional medicine practitioners recognize that fi bromyalgia represents an energy crisis in the body and use simple, appro-priate and effective treatments with no harmful side effects,” says Teitelbaum. “Most often I use a SHINE protocol that I developed, based on 30 years of treating patients with chronic fatigue and fi bromyalgia, with a 90 percent success rate.”

His is just one example of the way functional medicine would treat a diffi cult-to-diagnose and to treat disease. Cass uses functional medicine very effectively against depression, addiction and a host of women’s health issues. Hyman special-izes in managing diabetes and obesity with the tools of func-tional medicine. “If other medicines worked as well as treatments used in functional medicine, I’d use them, but they don’t,” con-cludes Hyman. “My Hippocratic Oath says I must help relieve suffering. I can do that with the tools that functional medicine gives me.”

cases have an autoimmune component. Could fi bro symptoms be a result of hypothyroidism or vice versa? From a Functional Medicine perspective the answer is an emphatic “YES!” The Functional Medicine detective looks for overlapping symptoms and their causes. Both conditions have a high preva-lence of migraine-like headaches, which may suggest impair-ment of mitochondrial function. Another connection is diges-tive dysfunction. Leaky gut is a pathognomonic fi nding in all autoimmune conditions where impaired intestinal permeability signifi cantly increases infl ammation due to the over-activation of our immune system. According to a 2008 article in “Rheuma-tology”, the pain intensity of fi bro patients correlated with the degree of small intestine bacterial overgrowth. Also, low levels of Vitamin D correlate to worsening of intestinal permeability. In fact, vitamin D defi ciency is common in patients with chronic pain and/or autoimmune disease. It is also commonly misdiagnosed as fi bromyalgia, and lower D levels also cor-relate to depression and anxiety; common symptoms of fi bro and thyroid disease. According to a 2011 article in “Cellular Immunology”, “The prevalence of vitamin D defi ciency was signifi cantly higher in patients with auto-immune thyroid disease compared with healthy individuals (72% versus 30.6%) as well as in patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis compared to patients with non-AITDs (79% versus 52%; P<0.05).” Vitamin D defi ciency cor-relates to the presence of anti-thyroid antibodies and abnormal thyroid function tests. Science is learning that vitamin D is important for much more than just healthy bones! Functional Medicine asks “Why does someone have these symptoms?” It’s not enough to name it, blame it and tame it pharmaceutically (in most instances for the rest of the patient’s life)! An experienced Functional Medicine prac-titioner can set a course of action that incorporates dietary, lifestyle and supplemental changes to help you achieve your goals in health. There is hope and it starts with the knowl-edge that an alternative exists!

Dr Ian Hollaman DC is the director of Red Tail Wellness Cen-ter in Boulder, He specializes in treating the underlying causes of thyroid disorders and fi bromyalgia. 303-882-8447. RedTail-Wellness.com. See ad page 21.

According to the Institute for Functional Medicine, Function-al Medicine (FM) is a patient-centered, systems-oriented

approach to health that seeks to identify and treat the underly-ing causes of disease as opposed to a disease-centered, allo-pathic approach which utilizes pharmaceutics to treat isolated symptoms (see Functional Medicine-Taking the Whole Toolbox Approach p. xx). An FM specialist acts like a detective to un-cover underlying imbalances that lead to either syndromes like fi bromyalgia (fi bro), or Diseases like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Two fundamental premises of Functional Medicine are: chronic diseases are the result of chronic dysfunctions; and dysfunction results from a broad range of intertwined meta-bolic, infl ammatory, microbial, nutritional, psychological and environmental infl uences. Most of these issues are not ad-equately treated by allopathic medical pharmacology, possibly because it treats all patients the same within a given diagno-sis. FM practitioners search for the underlying cause to every condition and address each person as an individual, utilizing specifi c therapies to create change. In a 2012 article in “Rheumatology International”, scientists asked: “Does thyroid autoimmunity represent a predisposition for the development of fi bromyalgia? Based on our data, we speculate that maybe there is more than a hypothesis regard-ing the cause-effect relation between thyroid autoimmunity and the presence of fi bro, thus suggesting a hypothetical role of thyroid autoimmunity in fi bro pathogenesis.” Fibromyalgia is a poorly understood pain syndrome (group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality) with no known cause. Symptoms include fatigue, headaches, numbness, altered sleep, gastro-intestinal disturbances and chemical sensitivity. Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism share many of the same symptoms and 90% of
